SAINT- SPYRIDON.ORG CATECHISM 101 An Orthodox church is traditionally adorned with icons so that visually a worshiper will gaze upon the divine with no distraction or empty space. The incense fills the air with fragrance as an offering of gratitude to our merciful Lord. Beautiful music, in imitation of the sounds of angels, accentuates the words of prayer and lifts the soul from the pedestrian and the mundane to a heavenly realm. When the Russian emissaries of Vladimir the Great witnessed the liturgy at Hagia Sofia in Constantinople, it was the combination of sight, fragrance, and sound that compelled them to state: "We no longer knew whether we were in heaven or on earth,nor such beauty, and we know not how to tell of it. While we spoke of icons and incense in previous issues of the VOICE, what remains is to speak of the sound, the music that adorns our Orthodox worship experience. The musical tradition of our Orthodox Church is commonly known as Byzantine Music since it was developed within the context and time of the Byzantine Empire. It bears its origin, however, within the sounds of ancient Hellenistic culture. In the early church, the apostles established chanting as a form of worship, and early hymnographers composed both the hymns and the music such as O Gladsome Light in the evening service or the angelic hymn Holy, Holy, Holy Lord Sabaoth from the Divine Liturgy. Up until the 4 th century, the people chanted together in congregational monophonic singing. However, as the newly freed Christian Church

To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. emerged in the years following St. Constantine the Great, the congregations were led by trained and competent musicians. Furthermore, in response to the teaching methods of various heretics who used songs in order to convey to memory their erroneous teachings, church musicians and hymnographers began composing a variety of hymns which served as memorable summaries of Orthodox dogma. Examples of these are the hymns of the Liturgy Only begotten Son and the Cherubic hymn. Byzantine music and composition flourished during the Byzantine era with melodists and hymnographers such as St. Romanos, St. John of Damascus, St. Theodore the Studite, St. Photios of Constantinople, St. Leo the Wise, St. Kassiane, and St. John Koukouzelis. In the post Byzantine era, the Great Church of Constantinople preserved the musical traditional of the Orthodox Church through a series of church musicians such as Emmanouel Chrysafis, Fr. Valasios, George Redestinos, Petros of Peloponnesus and many more. In 1814, a commission was formed in order to formalize the musical notation which until this time was very confusing and intricate. Among those who transcribed all the ancient melodies into this revised and simplified musical notation, we have another class of influential chanters from Constantinople such as Theodore Fokaes, George Sarantaekklisioti, Iakovos Nafpliotis, Constantine Priggos, and Thrasyvoulos Stanitsas. Within this short history of Byzantine Music we realize that what we hear in church is the same music and hymns that were heard in Hagia Sophia in Constantinople. It is the music of St. John of Damascus, the hymns heard by emperors and patriarchs of centuries long ago. The saints who composed these hymns, all the godly people who in imitation of the angels set them into music, and the faithful who prayerfully chanted these hymns throughout the centuries, continue to listen in to our prayers. They rejoice when they hear sounds and prayerful words that are familiar to them, joining in with faithful hearts who continue the Orthodox musical tradition. We live in a Christian environment which favors change and adaptation, entertainment and emotionalism. The Orthodox musical tradition dictates exclusively the use of the human voice. A single melody is accompanied by what is termed the eternal note the ison which serves as a base upon which the melody is sung. Its musical scales are rooted in ancient forms and the purpose of the music is not to entertain but to accentuate the prayers. Hymns which were written and musically adapted by saints centuries ago deserve due honor by generations to come and inspired translation by a new class of church musicians. Therefore, we will not see bands and guitar players in our churches anytime soon. We do not need to throw away our musical tradition to the prevailing wind of modern worship. We simply need to become acquainted with the wealth we have inherited. In Byzantine Music we can find all the tools needed to make every parish relive the splendor of Hagia Sofia in Constantinople. Tremendous work is being done throughout our Archdiocese to familiarize the faithful with this beautiful 2 The Voice

3 art form as well as to translate our hymnology while adapting it properly to these ancient melodies rooted in the sounds of heaven. It is our task to live up to the wealth we have received, making it our own, passing it on to generations to come as a living and pious expression within the sights, fragrances, and divine sounds which adorn our Orthodox worship experience. 6 P.T.A. NEWS During the month of January our Plutarchos students participated in various events in celebration of Hellenic Letters. Congratulations to Demetra Alikakos and Aristotelis Vainikos for getting an award for their Agrapho Essay. Congratulations to all the Greek Scholl teachers and their students for their beautiful performances during the various Metropolis Hellenic Letters celebrations:! Our kids always make us so proud! On January 26th, we held our Annual Artoclasia in honor of the feast of the Three Hierarchs, the patron saints of Greek Religious Education. Thank you to Mr. & Mrs. Gus Alikakos and Mr. & Mrs. Petinatos for preparing the Artous. Thank you to all the parents that baked vasilopites for our Sunday and Greek School classrooms. School Spirit Day is Friday, February 15th. Wear your Greek T- shirt! Congratulations to the 3rd graders for winning last month! On Friday, February 28th, we are hosting our 2nd Talent Show, Greeks Got Talent. Students will showcase their amazing talent! Please turn in forms ASAP if your child is interested in participating. Our Plutarchos Greek Independence Day celebration had to be moved to Sunday, April 6th. The P.T.A. is preparing a Lenten luncheon during this festive program by our Greek School students and Greek Dancers. The P.T.A. is seeking volunteers and donors for the event. Our next meeting will be held on Friday, February 7th, during Greek School. SUNDAY SCHOOL This month, the Sunday School students are participating in our annual Souper Bowl by collecting canned food items to donate to our food pantry. Each student is asked to bring in $1 and at least 1 food can. Together we can make a difference and provide food for those in our own community. Cans will be collected on January 26 th & on February 2 nd during Sunday School. On February 2 nd, we will be hosting our chili & cornbread sale. A bowl of chili-to-go is only $5 and includes all the fixings! All proceeds are to benefit the Iconography project, so please support us! 6 The Voice

Lunch will follow at Athena Restaurant in Greek Town. We will meet at St. Spyridon at 9:30 a.m. and carpool. Cost: $24 for museum admission & guided tour. Lunch is not included in price. Reservations are required Please call Kathy Korbakes at LENTEN TRIODION BEGINS FEBRUARY 9TH The Lenten Triodion is the service book of the Orthodox Church that provides the texts for the divine services for the pre-lenten weeks of preparation, Great Lent, and Holy Week. It is called the triodion because the canons appointed for Orthros during this period are composed of three odes each. The weeks of preparation, and especially the Sunday gospel readings, serve to exercise the mind, whereas the fasting of Great Lent focuses on the body, and Holy Week's services exercise the spirit. The Church eases us into the Lenten fasting discipline during this period. The week following the Sunday of the Publican and Pharisee is fast-free. The week following the Prodigal Son is a normal week -- we fast as usual on Wednesday and Friday. In the week following Meatfare Sunday, no meat is eaten; eggs, fish, and dairy are permitted on any day. Forgiveness Sunday brings the period of preparation to an end. The next day, Clean Monday begins Great Lent. The Vespers service served on the evening of Forgiveness Sunday includes the Rite of Mutual Forgiveness and is the first service of Great Lent. 8 ICONOGRAPHY UPDATE ICONOGRAPHY PROJECT All that remains is the final stage of our iconography which will cover the north and south arches. All the individual saint icons have been pledged or donated. In the month of January, the icon of the Wedding of Cana was pledged. Still available for donation are the large icons listed below. All donations are welcomed. Groups of individuals or families may come together to sponsor the remaining icons which cost $15,000 each. Icons may be pledged completely by one group or an individual or pledged partially in combination with other donors. All pledges that are made toward particular icons will be recognized and listed on our donor board. The icons still remaining are: The Adoration of the Magi ($500 donated) Raising of Lazarus ($1,000 donated) Transfiguration of our Lord The Flight to Egypt The Last Supper Miracle of St. Spyridon All donations are welcome. EΙΚΟΝΟΓΡΑΦΗΣΗ ΤΟΥ ΝΑΟΥ Η εικονογράφηση του ναού προχωρεί στο τελικό στάδιο με την τοποθέτηση εικόνων στην βόρεια και νότεια καμάρα. Οι μόνες εικόνες που είναι διαθέσιμες για δωρεά είναι οι μεγάλες παραστάσεις: 1) Η Προσκύνησις των Μάγων, 2) Η Φυγή στην Αίγυπτο, 3) Η Μεταμόρφωσις του Σωτήρος, 4) Ο Μυστικός Δείπνος, και 5) Η Ανάσταση του Λαζάρου, 6) Θαύμα του Αγίου Σπυρίδωνος. Τό κόστος για κάθε εικόνα είναι $15,000, αλλά όλες οι δωρεές πρός οποιαδήποτε εικόνα είναι ευπρόσδεκτες και θα αναγνωριστούν στην λίστα των δωρητών και κάθε εικόνα. St. Nicholas Planas One of the icons which graces our solea is that St. Nicholas Planas whose feast day is on March 2nd. This St. Nicholas ( ) was affectionately known as Papa Nicholas Planas. He was born on the Island of Naxos in Greece, and as a young boy would secretly go the the local church and chant as much as he knew. At 14, Papa Nicholas father died, and his mother moved the family to Athens. Forced by his mother to marry when he was of age, he only lived with his wife until they had a child, then devoted his whole life to serving God. Papa Nicholas was ordained a priest in 1884, even though he was quite simple and unlettered. He always performed the church services daily, and did this for anyone out of love for God. Living often in hardship, persecution, and tribulation, he endured this peacefully and was always kind and thoughtful to all. He became a great visionary and saint, and knew how to guide others to God, seeing through outward circumstances to the actual inner workings of men and God, and His Providence. May we, too, learn to love God above all, be simple in faith and heart, and face trials peacefully. 8 The Voice

9 School Year REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN! St. Spyridon continues to bless our community with a bi-lingual preschool that is second to none. Our preschool is for 3 and 4 year olds, it runs from 9am to 12noon Monday through Thursday. Applications for the school year are now available in the office and on our website at saint-spyridon.org/archangels. If you have question or would like to set up a visit please contact Mrs. Anna at archangels@saint-spyridon.org. Please be aware that applications are accepted on a first come first serve basis, with priority given to St. Spyridon stewards and alumni. We have limited space so please plan accordingly. As part of our Epiphany unit Father Tilemahos performed a mock baptism with our class. After the sacrament each student received a martiriko. 10 NEW YEAR S EVE DINNER DANCE On December 31st, our community of Saint Spyridon hosted its New Year s Eve Celebration with great success. Over one hundred and fifty guests braved the bad weather and got together to enjoy delicious food, music and fellowship as they welcomed the new year Many thanks to Mr. Ted Georgiopoulos and his committee for organizing this events, to Mr. Kosta Alexopoulos for his generous support of the event, and all the donors and volunteers who made the evening a success.
