2 The Paschal Hours The Opening Sequence of Pascha (Ἐναρκτήριος Ἀκολουθία τοῦ Πάσχα) In place of the Ninth Hour on the Leave-Taking (Ἀπόδοσις) of Pascha The brief service of the Paschal Hours is recited in the narthex of the church, immediately prior to the Vespers of the Ascension of Our Lord on Wednesday evening, instead of the Ninth Hour. The Service of the Paschal Hours, or Opening Sequence of Pascha, replaces the services of the Midnight Office, Hours, and Compline during Bright Week. During this final service of the Paschal season, the holy Resurrection Icon rests on a stand in the narthex near the main entrance doors, as it has since Pascha. The Priest, vested in exorasson and epitrachelion and holding the lighted Paschal candle, exits the Holy of Holies through the Beautiful Gate and proceeds to the narthex. He is preceeded by the chanters (choir) and the Acolytes holding unlit candles and the resurrection banner Arriving in the narthex, the Priest stands before the Resurrection Icon. The acolytes holding their unlit candles, as well as the acolyte holding the resurrection banner, stand to either side of the Priest. The faithful, also holding unlit candles, assemble in the narthex facing the Resurrection Icon. If circumstances require, however, the faithful may stand in the nave of the church facing the narthex. The Priest gives the light to the faithful from the Paschal candle, and then faces the icon to begin the Service. Following the service, the chaters (choir), the acolytes, the Priest carrying the Resurrection Icon, and the faithful process into the temple. The Priest enters the Holy of Holies through the Beautiful Gate, while the acolytes enter as customary. After entering the Holy of Holies, the Beautiful Gate and the curtain are closed. An acolyte offers the censer for the Priest to bless, and the Priest then takes the censer to cense the Epitafion which has been laying on the Holy Altar since the Lamentation Matins Service of Holy and Great Friday evening. After completing the censing, the Priest reverently removes the Epitafion from the Altar, and places it in its usual place. Then, taking the Icon of the Body of Christ which has remained wrapped since the Apokathelosis Service on the afternoon of Holy and Great Friday, the Priest attaches it with reverence to the large wooden cross behind the Altar. Thus, having concluded the Services of the Leave-Taking of the Paschal Feast, the Priest opens the curtain and the Beautiful Gate, and begins the Vespers of the Feast of the Ascension. 2
