The Antidoron is not a sacrament, but it is reminiscent of the agape feast that followed worship in the ancient Christian Church. 2 Surprise - 40 Day Blessing of a Child The Lord is my strength and my song. Verse: The Lord has chastened me sorely. The Sunday Epistle Reading The reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians (9:2-12) Brethren, you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord. This is my defense to those who would examine me. Do we not have the right to our food and drink? Do we not have the right to be accompanied by a sister as wife, as the other apostles and the brothers of the Lord and Cephas? Or is it only Barnabas and I who have no right to refrain from working for a living? Who serves as a soldier at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard without eating any of its fruit? Who tends a flock without getting some of the milk? Do I say this on human authority? Does not the law say the same? For it is written in the law of Moses, "You shall not muzzle an ox when it is treading out the grain." Is it for oxen that God is concerned? Does he not speak entirely for our sake? It was written for our sake, because the plowman should plow in hope and the thresher thresh in hope of a share in the crop. If we have sown spiritual good among you, is it too much if we reap your material benefits? If others share this rightful claim upon you, do not we still more? Nevertheless, we have not made use of this right, but we endure anything rather than put an obstacle in the way of the gospel of Christ. Ἰσχύς μου καὶ ὕμνησίς μου ὁ Κύριος. Στίχ. 3 The Gospel According to Matthew 18:23-35 The Sunday Gospel Reading The Lord said this parable: "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants. When he began the reckoning, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents; and as he could not pay, his lord ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made. So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him, 'Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.' And out of pity for him the lord of that servant released him and forgave him the debt. But that same servant, as he went out, came upon one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii; and seizing him by the throat he said, 'Pay what you owe.' So his fellow servant fell down and besought him, 'Have patience with me, and I will pay you.' He refused and went and put him in prison till he should pay the debt. When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their lord all that had taken place. Then his lord summoned him and said to him, 'You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you besought me; and should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?' And in anger his lord delivered him to the torturers, till he should pay all his debt. So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart." 7 PARACLESIS Explanation of the Paraclesis: The word paraclesis has two different meanings: the first is consolation, from which the Holy Spirit is called the Paraclete, or consoler ; the second is supplication or petition. The Service of the Paraclesis to the Theotokos consists of hymns of supplication to obtain consolation and courage. It should be recited in times of temptation, discouragement or sickness. It is used more particularly during the two weeks before the Dormition, or Assumption, of the Theotokos, from August 1 to August 14. The theme of these Paraclesis Services centers around the petition, Most Holy Mother of God, intercede for us. If you have a problem or if something is burdening your soul, if you feel spiritually uneasy and if you are not at peace with yourself and with those around you, then, you should come to the Church during the first fifteen days of August and ask for the intercessions for the Mother of God. Even if you are fortunate enough to be one of those very few who are at peace with themselves and with God, then those blessed ones should come to these services and thank God and His Mother and for the blessings that they have upon them and their families. Since these Paraclesis Services to the Theotokos are primarily petitioned for the welfare of the living, let the whole Church pray for you during the first fifteen days of August and especially in the Great Feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos on August 15 th. Don t let your laziness and your apathy cause you to miss this great blessing and inspiration that the Church can bestow upon you. Let the peace and holiness that only the Mother of God can give you enter into your life. Let us lay aside all earthly cares, and let us truly, during these fifteen days, participate in the fasting and prayer life of the Church so that we can taste and see that the Lord is good and so that we may fully experience the spiritual blessings of the Church. Names for the Health and Well Being of Loved Ones Are Submitted at the Service: As noted above, the Paraclesis service is a supplication service specifically for the well-being of the living. During the services, Father Stavroforos will commemorate the names of the living faithful for whom prayers have been asked. Accordingly, if you have family members, godparents, godchildren, friends, etc., who you would like to have commemorated at these services, please make a list of their names and provide it to Father. The Reason We Fast for the Feast of the Dormition: So why do we fast before the Dormition? In a close-knit family, word that its matriarch is on her deathbed brings normal life to a halt. Otherwise important things (parties, TV, luxuries, personal desires) become unimportant; life comes to revolve around the dying matriarch. It is the same with the Orthodox family; word that our matriarch is on her deathbed, could not (or at least should not) have any different effect than the one mentioned. The Church, through the Paraclesis Service, gives you the opportunity to come to that deathbed and eulogize and entreat the woman who bore God, the vessel of salvation and our chief advocate at His divine throne. And as, in the earthly family, daily routine and indulgence in personal wants should come to a halt. Fasting, in its full sense (abstaining from food and desires) accomplishes this. Less time in leisure or other pursuits leaves one more time for prayer and reflection on the one who gave us Christ, and became the first and greatest Christian. In reflecting on her and her incomparable life, we see a model Christian life, embodying Christ s retort to the woman who stated that Mary was blessed because she bore Him; blessed rather are those who hear the word and keep it. Mary did this better than anyone. As Fr. Thomas Hopko stated, she heard the word of God and kept it so well, that she of all women in history was chosen not only to hear His Word but give birth to it (Him). So while we fast in contemplation of her life, we are simultaneously preparing ourselves to live a life in imitation of her. That is the purpose of the Dormition Fast. 7

10 Γιατί ο λαός πανηγυρίζει την Κοίμηση (θάνατο) της Θεοτόκου Παναγίας; Γράφει ο Νίκος Σουτόπουλος * Η Εκκλησία μας τιμάει τη μεγάλη Θεομητορική γιορτή της Χριστιανοσύνης την Κοίμηση της Θεοτόκου Παναγίας που εορτάζεται κάθε χρόνο στις 15 Αυγούστου. Στην Ορθόδοξη Χριστιανική Εκκλησία ο εορτασμός της Κοίμησης της Θεοτόκου περιλαμβάνει κατά πρώτο λόγο το θάνατο και την ταφή της Παναγίας και κατά δεύτερο την ανάσταση και τη μετάστασή της στους ουρανούς. Εικόνα Κοίμησης Θεοτόκου Για την Κοίμηση της Θεοτόκου δεν υπάρχουν πληροφορίες από την Καινή Διαθήκη. Γι αυτήν μαθαίνουμε από τις διηγήσεις σημαντικών εκκλησιαστικών ανδρών, όπως των Αγίου Ιωάννου του Θεολόγου, Διονυσίου του Αρεοπαγίτη, Μόδεστου Ιεροσολύμων, Ανδρέα Κρήτης, Γερμανού Κωνσταντινουπόλεως, Ιωάννη Δαμασκηνού κ.ά., καθώς και από τα σχετικά τροπάρια της εκκλησιαστικής υμνολογίας. Στα κείμενα αυτά διασώζεται η «αρχαία και αληθεστάτη» παράδοση της Εκκλησίας γι αυτό το Θεομητορικό γεγονός. Έτσι, λοιπόν, κατά την εκκλησιαστική παράδοση, η μητέρα του Ιησού Χριστού, Μαρία (η Θεοτόκος και Παναγία), πληροφορήθηκε τον επικείμενο θάνατό της από έναν άγγελο τρεις ημέρες προτού αυτός συμβεί και προετοιμάστηκε κατάλληλα. Επειδή κατά την ημέρα της Κοίμησής της δεν ήταν όλοι οι Απόστολοι στα Ιεροσόλυμα, καθώς κήρυτταν «απανταχού γης», μια νεφέλη τους άρπαξε και τους έφερε κοντά της. Μοναδικός απών ο Απόστολος Θωμάς. Η Κοίμηση της Θεοτόκου συνέβη στο σπίτι του Ευαγγελιστή Ιωάννη, στο οποίο διέμενε η μητέρα του Θεανθρώπου. Αφού της έκλεισαν τα μάτια, οι Απόστολοι μετέφεραν το νεκροκρέβατό της στον κήπο της Γεθσημανής, όπου και την έθαψαν. Κατά τη μεταφορά του λειψάνου της, φανατικοί Ιουδαίοι αποπειράθηκαν να ανατρέψουν το νεκροκρέβατό της, αλλά τυφλώθηκαν. Μόνο ένας από αυτούς κατόρθωσε να το ακουμπήσει, αλλά μια αόρατη ρομφαία του έκοψε τα χέρια. Επιτάφιος της Παναγίας. Μοναδικός απών από την κηδεία της υπήρξε, όπως προαναφέραμε, ο Απόστολος Θωμάς. Όταν μετά από τρεις ημέρες πήγε στον τάφο της, βρήκε μόνο τα εντάφια. Προφανώς, η Παναγία είχε αναστηθεί. Πάνω στον τάφο της χτίστηκε μεγαλοπρεπής ναός, που αποδίδεται στην Αγία Ελένη. Μετά την καταστροφή του, ο αυτοκράτορας του Βυζαντίου Μαρκιανός ( ) με τη δεύτερη σύζυγό του Πουλχερία έχτισαν ένα νέο ναό, που υπάρχει μέχρι σήμερα. Η Κοίμηση της Θεοτόκου εορταζόταν αρχικά στις 13 Αυγούστου και από το 460 στις 15 Αυγούστου. Ι. Μονή Κοιμήσεως Θεοτόκου Γκούρας Μεταξύ της Ορθόδοξης και της Καθολικής Εκκλησίας υπάρχει δογματική διαφορά σχετικά με την Κοίμηση της Θεοτόκου. Η Καθολική Εκκλησία πιστεύει στο δόγμα της ενσώματης ανάληψης της Θεοτόκου (Assumptio Beatae Mariae Virginis), που οριστικοποιήθηκε με την αποστολική εγκύκλιο του Πάπα Πίου IB «Munificentissimus Deus» (1 Νοεμβρίου 1950). Αντίθετα, η Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία κάνει λόγο πρώτα για Κοίμηση της Θεοτόκου, δηλαδή πραγματικό θάνατο (χωρισμό ψυχής και σώματος) και στη συνέχεια για μετάσταση της Θεοτόκου, δηλαδή ανάσταση (ένωση ψυχής και σώματος) και ανάληψή της κοντά στον Υιόν της. Τις ημέρες της νηστείας του Δεκαπενταύγουστου ψάλλονται τις απογευματινές ώρες στις εκκλησίες (εκτός Σαββάτου), εναλλάξ, ο «Μικρός και ο Μέγας Παρακλητικός Κανών εις την Υπεραγίαν Θεοτόκον», οι λεγόμενες «Παρακλήσεις». 10

Στην Ελλάδα, η Κοίμηση της Θεοτόκου εορτάζεται με ιδιαίτερη λαμπρότητα, ονομάζεται δε και «Πάσχα του Καλοκαιριού». Σε πολλά νησιά του Αιγαίου (Τήνος, Πάρος, Πάτμος) στολίζουν και περιφέρουν επιτάφιο προς τιμήν της Παναγίας. Σε πόλεις και χωριά στην Ελλάδα και το εξωτερικό, σε εκκλησίες αφιερωμένες στην Κοίμηση της Θεοτόκου διοργανώνονται παραδοσιακά πανηγύρια, που καταλήγουν σε γλέντι. Η Κοίμηση της Θεοτόκου δεν είναι ένα πένθιμο γεγονός για τον λαό, επειδή η Παναγία «μετέστη προς την ζωήν». Εξάλλου, τον Δεκαπενταύγουστο γιορτάζουν ο Παναγιώτης, η Μαρία και η Δέσποινα. Όσοι πιστεύουν στον σταυρωθέντα και αναστάντα Κύριο δεν φοβούνται το θάνατο, διότι γνωρίζουν ότι αυτός είναι ένα πέρασμα από τα επίγεια στα ουράνια, από τα πρόσκαιρα στα αιώνια, από τα λυπηρά στα ευχάριστα. Αφού ο Κύριος με το σταυρικό του θάνατο πάτησε και κατάργησε το θάνατο, ήταν φυσικό να ανεβάσει στους ουρανούς τη Μητέρα του και να της χαρίσει τη δόξα της αιωνιότητας. Όπως λένε τα τροπάρια της Κοιμήσεως, στον ειρμό της εορτής της Παναγίας ο θάνατός της προμνηστεύεται τη ζωή («Νενίκηνται τῆς φύσεως οἱ ὅροι, ἐν σοὶ Παρθένε ἄχραντε παρθενεύει γὰρ τόκος, καὶ ζωὴν προμνηστεύεται θάνατος»). Αυτή που γέννησε τη ζωή, έχει μεταβεί στη ζωή. Έτσι ο θάνατός της ονομάζεται «αθάνατος Κοίμησις». Και όλα αυτά γιατί η Παναγία πρώτη μεταξύ των ανθρωπίνων πλασμάτων πραγματοποίησε τη θεοποίηση του ανθρώπου, που είναι η συνέπεια της σάρκωσης. Με την Κοίμησή της προπορεύτηκε στη δόξα που μας περιμένει. Γι αυτό ακριβώς το λόγο ο λαός μας πανηγυρίζει σε κάθε εκκλησία της Παναγίας το Δεκαπενταύγουστο, γιορτάζοντας αυτό το «μικρό Πάσχα» του καλοκαιριού! Πού βρίσκεται ο τάφος της Παναγίας σήμερα; Ύψωμα Κοιμήσεως Παναγίας Κατά την θρησκευτική παράδοση, η Παναγία πέθανε δέκα χρόνια μετά τη Σταύρωση του Ιησού και τάφηκε στην Ιερουσαλήμ. Πού βρίσκεται, όμως, ο τάφος της Παναγίας; Ο τάφος της Παναγίας, γνωστός και ως Πάνσεπτο Θεομητορικό Μνήμα της Γεθσημανής, αποτελεί για τους Ορθοδόξους Χριστιανούς το τρίτο κατά σειρά σπουδαιότητας προσκύνημα. Εντός του Ναού Δεσπόζουν το Πανάγιο Θεομητορικό μνήμα και η Θαυματουργή εικόνα της Παναγίας της Ιεροσολημήτισσας. Ο σημερινός Ναός που είναι από τα παλαιότερα χτίσματα της Ιερουσαλήμ, χτίστηκε από την Αγία Ελένη το 326 μ.χ. προς τιμή της Κοιμήσεως Θεοτόκου. Βρίσκεται κάτω από την επιφάνεια του εδάφους και πρέπει ο επισκέπτης να κατέβει 49 σκαλιά. Ι. Ναός Κοιμήσεως Θεοτόκου στη Γεσθημανή σήμερα Αν και είναι μια ταπεινή κρύπτη, ωστόσο στο εσωτερικό της ανακαλύπτει κανείς μια ξεχωριστή μεγαλοπρέπεια. Καταπληκτικός παραλληλισμός με το Υπερευλογημένο πρόσωπο της Θεοτόκου. Το κυρίως προσκύνημα βρίσκεται μέσα σε ένα λιθόκτιστο κουβούκλιο, ύψους 2 m, μήκος 3 m και πλάτος 4 m και είχε λαξευτεί σε λίθινο βράχο. Η είσοδος στο κουβούκλιο γίνεται από τα μια μικρή είσοδο η οποία βρίσκεται δυτικά, ενώ η έξοδος από τα βόρεια. Βγαίνοντας από το Κουβούκλιο, στα δεξιά υπάρχει το Καθολικό του Ιερού Ναού των Ορθοδόξων στο οποίο βρίσκεται η θαυματουργός Εικόνα της Θεοτόκου της Ιεροσολυμίτισσας. Στο 24ο σκαλοπάτι υπάρχουν από δεξιά οι Τάφοι των αγίων και δικαίων Θεοπατόρων Ιωακείμ και Άννης. Από αριστερά ο Τάφος του αγίου μνήστορος Ιωσήφ. Και οι δύο αυτοί τάφοι αυτοί είναι άγια θυσιαστήρια. Το μνημείο αυτό είναι υψίστης σημασίας για τους Ορθοδόξους Χριστιανούς καθώς σε αυτό ο Κύριος μας προσευχήθηκε θερμά και με πολύ αγωνία, δέχτηκε το φιλί της προδοσίας, συνελήφθη από τους στρατιώτες του Πιλάτου, τον όχλο και τους υπηρέτες των Φαρισαίων, κηδεύθηκε και ενταφιάστηκε το πανσεβάσμιο Σώμα της Παναγίας μας από τους Αγίους Αποστόλους. Σύμφωνα με την ιερά παράδοση από το σημείο αυτό το Πάνσεπτο Σώμα της Παναγίας μετέστη την τρίτη ημέρα προς την Ουράνιο Βασιλεία και κοντά στον αγαπημένο Υιό της. Τέλος, η Ιερά Παράδοση αναφέρει ότι στην περιοχή της Γεθσημανής θα γίνει η θεϊκή κρίση της Β Παρουσίας του Κυρίου. 11

Σε κάθε γωνιά της Ελλάδας και μια εκκλησία αφιερωμένη στη χάρη της Κυρίας Δέσποινας. Η Παναγιά η Μεγαλόχαρη, η Βρεφοκρατούσα, η Οδηγήτρια, η Γοργοϋπήκοος, η Ελεούσα, η Θαλασσινή, η Εκατονταπυλιανή, η Γιάτρισσα, η Μυρτιδιώτισσα, του Σουμελά, Παναγία η Κωσταρίτισσα μα πάνω απ όλα είναι η Παναγιά η Μάνα. Η Μητέρα όλων μας, συμπαραστάτης των Ορθόδοξων Χριστιανών αλλά και του Ελληνισμού, όπου γης. Από τη μια άκρη της Ελλάδας στην άλλη και στην ομογένεια στο εξωτερικό, σε βουνά, πόλεις, χωριά και νησιά, κάποια Παναγιά παρηγορεί, εμψυχώνει και γαληνεύει όποιον της γυρεύει βοήθεια. Dormition of the Theotokos Wednesday August 15 th 9:00 am Service The feast of the Dormition or Falling-asleep of the Theotokos is celebrated on the fifteenth of August, preceded by a two-week fast. This feast, which is also sometimes called the Assumption, commemorates the death, resurrection and glorification of Christ s mother. It proclaims that Mary has been assumed by God into the heavenly kingdom of Christ in the fullness of her spiritual and bodily existence. As with the nativity of the Virgin and the feast of her entrance to the temple, there are no biblical or historical sources for this feast. The Tradition of the Church is that Mary died as all people die, not voluntarily as her Son, but by the necessity of her mortal human nature which is indivisibly bound up with the corruption of this world. The Orthodox Church teaches that Mary is without personal sins. In the Gospel of the feast, however, in the liturgical services and in the Dormition icon, the Church proclaims as well that Mary truly needed to be saved by Christ as all human persons are saved from the trials, sufferings and death of this world; and that having truly died, she was raised up by her Son as the Mother of Life and participates already in the eternal life of paradise which is prepared and promised to all who hear the word of God and keep it (Lk ). 12

13 In giving birth, you preserved your virginity. In falling asleep you did not forsake the world, O Theotokos. You were translated to life, O Mother of Life, and by your prayers, you deliver our souls from death (Troparion). Neither the tomb, nor death, could hold the Theotokos, who is constant in prayer and our firm hope in her intercessions. For being the Mother of Life, she was translated to life, by the One who dwelt in her virginal womb (Kontakion). The services of the feast repeat the main theme, that the Mother of Life has passed over into the heavenly joy, into the divine gladness and unending delight of the Kingdom of her Son (Vesperal hymn). The Old Testament readings, as well as the gospel readings for the Vigil and the Divine Liturgy, are exactly the same as those for the feast of the Virgin s nativity and her entrance into the Temple. Thus, at the Vigil we again hear Mary say: My soul magnifies the Lord and my Spirit rejoices in God my Saviour (Lk 1.47). At the Divine Liturgy we hear the letter to the Philippians where Saint Paul speaks of the self-emptying of Christ who condescends to human servitude and ignoble death in order to be highly exalted by God his Father (Phil ). And once again we hear in the Gospel that Mary s blessedness belongs to all who hear the word of God and keep it (Lk ). Thus, the feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos is the celebration of the fact that all men are highly exalted in the blessedness of the victorious Christ, and that this high exaltation has already been accomplished in Mary the Theotokos. The feast of the Dormition is the sign, the guarantee, and the celebration that Mary s fate is, the destiny of all those of low estate whose souls magnify the Lord, whose spirits rejoice in God the Saviour, whose lives are totally dedicated to hearing and keeping the Word of God which is given to men in Mary s child, the Saviour and Redeemer of the world. Finally it must be stressed that, in all of the feasts of the Virgin Mother of God in the Church, the Orthodox Christians celebrate facts of their own lives in Christ and the Holy Spirit. What happens to Mary happens to all who imitate her holy life of humility, obedience, and love. With her all people will be blessed to be more honorable than the cherubim and beyond compare more glorious than the seraphim if they follow her example. All will have Christ born in them by the Holy Spirit. All will become temples of the living God. All will share in the eternal life of His Kingdom who live the life that Mary lived. In this sense everything that is praised and glorified in Mary is a sign of what is offered to all persons in the life of the Church. It is for this reason that Mary, with the divine child Jesus within her, is called in the Orthodox Tradition the Image of the Church. For the assembly of the saved is those in whom Christ dwells.
