HOLY EUCHARIST (HOLY COMMUNION) We remind everyone that the Blessed Bread (Antidoron) offered at the end of the Divine Liturgy may be received by all. Holy Communion is a Sacrament within the Orthodox Church and is only offered to Baptized and/or Chrismated Orthodox Christians who have prepared themselves to receive the Body and Blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. As you come to receive, please follow the direction of the Parish Council Members, Ushers, and Acolytes. CHURCH GOSPEL AND SERMON ETIQUETTE It is disrespectful to arrive late for Liturgy and walk to a front pew while our clergy are reading the Gospel or delivering their sermons. It is also distracting to others who are attempting to concentrate on the message. If you must enter Liturgy late, you are kindly asked to take a seat at the very back until the Gospel or sermon are completed.

5 EPISTLE Hebrews 13:17-21 B rethren, obey your leaders and submit to them; for they are keeping watch over your souls, as men who will have to give account. Let them do this joyfully, and not sadly, for that would be of no advantage to you. Pray for us, for we are sure that we have a clear conscience, desiring to act honorably in all things. I urge you the more earnestly to do this in order that I may be restored to you the sooner. Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great Shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with everything good that you may do His will, working in you that which is pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. 7 SAINT ATHANASIOS THE GREAT In the half-century after the First Ecumenical Council held in Nicea in 325, if there was one man whom the Arians feared and hated more intensely than any other, as being able to lay bare the whole error of their teaching, and to marshal, even from exile or hiding, the beleaguered forces of the Orthodox, it was Saint Athanasios the Great. He was born in Alexandria about the year 296 and received an excellent training in Greek letters and especially in the sacred Scriptures, of which he shows an exceptional knowledge in his writings. Saint Alexander, the Archbishop of Alexandria, brought him up in piety, ordained him his deacon, and took Athanasios to the First Council in Nicea in 325. Saint Athanasios was to spend the remainder of his life laboring in defense of this Holy Council. Before his death, Alexander appointed Athanasios his successor. In 325, Arius had been condemned by the Council of Nicea; yet Saint Constantine the Great was persuaded by Arius's supporters that he should be received back into the communion of the Church. But Athanasios refused communion with Arius. The heresiarch's followers then began framing false charges against Athanasios. Finally Saint Constantine the Great, misled by grave charges of the Saint's misconduct, had him exiled. When Saint Constantine was succeeded by his three sons Constantine II, Constans, and Constantius, Saint Athanasios returned in triumph. But his enemies found an ally in Constantius, and he spent a second exile in Rome. It was ended when Constans prevailed. For 10 years Saint Athanasios strengthened Orthodoxy throughout Egypt. When Constantius became sole Emperor, Athanasios was again in danger. In 356, General Syrianus with more than five thousand soldiers surrounded the church in which Athanasios was serving, and broke open the doors. Athanasios's clergy begged him to leave, but the good shepherd commanded that all the flock should withdraw first; and only when he was assured of their safety, he also, protected by divine grace, passed through the midst of the soldiers and disappeared into the deserts of Egypt, where for some Saints and Feasts six years he eluded the soldiers and spies sent after him. When Julian the Apostate succeeded Constantius, Athanasios returned again, but only for a few months. Because Athanasios had converted many pagans, the heathen Emperor ordered his death. Athanasios took a ship up the Nile and escaped. After returning to Alexandria, he fled again until Julian's death in 363. Saint Athanasios suffered his fifth exile under Valens, which only lasted four months. The great Athanasios passed the remaining years of his life in peace and in the year 373 took his rest from his lengthy sufferings. ΑΓΙΟΣ ΑΘΑΝΑΣΙΟΣ Ο ΜΕΓΑΣ Ο Μέγας Αθανάσιος γεννήθηκε το 295 μ.χ. από φτωχούς γονείς, όμως ο πανάγαθος Θεός τον προίκισε με πλούσια πνευματικά προσόντα. Μελετά μόνος του για να φθάσει σε υψηλότατα επίπεδα γνώσης και σοφίας και από νέος έδειξε την κλίση του προς την Εκκλησία. 25 ετών χειροτονείται διάκονος από τον πατριάρχη Αλεξανδρείας Αλέξανδρο, τον οποίο ακολουθεί στην Α Οικουμενική Σύνοδο το 325 μ.χ., στη Νίκαια της Βιθυνίας. Αναδεικνύεται πρωτεργάτης στην καταδίκη της αιρετικής διδασκαλίας του Αρείου. Σε ηλικία 33 ετών εκλέγεται πατριάρχης Αλεξανδρείας. Από τη θέση αυτή αντιμετωπίζει ένα πόλεμο εκ μέρους των αιρετικών οπαδών του Αρείου. Όμως ο άγιος, χάρη στην μεγάλη πνευματικότητά του και τη ζέουσα πίστη στο Θεό, κατορθώνει να βγει νικητής απ όλες αυτές τις δοκιμασίες ακόμη και από τις πέντε εξορίες που του επιβλήθηκαν, καθώς ο αυτοκράτορας Κωνσταντίνος ο Β ήταν οπαδός του Αρειανισμού. Εκοιμήθη εν ειρήνη το 373 μ.χ.

In baptism, submergence in water represents death to the old ways of sin, and what follows is a resurrection a rebirth to a new life in Christ. While Orthodox Christians are baptized only once, as a community we commemorate Christ s baptism every year. What better time to renew your life in Christ? What better way than through stewardship? We are stewards of the first catch.

ST NICHOLAS KITCHEN St Nicholas Kitchen is an outreach ministry which provides a hot meal and fellowship to those in need. Volunteers for cooking, serving meals and cleanup between 8:00 am and 1:00 pm - along with monetary donations for the purchase of food - are welcome and needed. Remember the book of Matthew 25:35-36:...For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me. Security experts, state and city clerks, administrators, printers, volunteers, guests, all sorts of people from a variety of backgrounds have to come together to make it happen; and it is the Epiphany Committee, led by Emmanuel Gombos and Johanna Kossifidis, that is entrusted with the coordination of this major event. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for an outstanding outcome. With the invaluable guidance of Fr James & Fr Sampson, they were able to offer the Greek Orthodox community, as well as all our visitors, a day to remember. Colovos Scholarship Spring Session 2016 All forms are on print out or pick up packet from Parish office and return by deadline above. Remember to fill out 2015 and 2016 St. Nicholas Stewardship Card! It s easy to do! Please review checklist below for required documents: Current scholarship application Application must be completed in full. You may attach any additional comments that explain your special circumstances to the Trustee of the Colovos Scholarship Fund. Academic transcript of the previous semester Minimum GPA is 3.0 Recent high school graduates should provide their high school transcript. For college students, an online print-out of final grades is usually acceptable. Proof of class registration for the upcoming semester Must be full time student: 12 credit minimum (with the exception of Summer session.) If your program is full time but less than 12 credits, provide explanation and proof. Parent s current Personal Tax Return Your current Personal Tax Return (if applicable) You must be a Steward/Active member of the Church for a continuous two (2) year period immediately prior to the application for a scholarship from the Fund. Applicants 18 years old or older need to be stewards in their own name even if a dependent living at home.
