4 Dear friends, 2017 marks the 100 th anniversary of the incorporation of the Greek Community of Winnipeg. Over the past one hundred years, our Community has been deeply committed to promoting and preserving our Greek culture, faith, and heritage in Manitoba. As part of our celebration of this milestone in the history of our community, we invite you to extend your best wishes for the future through an advertisement in the Centennial Celebration Commemorative Album. This album is not restricted to businesses; messages can be from your family, your volunteer organization, or in honour of a loved one. Photos can also be included with your advertisement. This Album will be given to families and guests in attendance at the Centennial Celebration Gala on March 25, 2017, and will be made available in the Church Office after the Gala. Please find attached a Commemorative Album advertising form for you to complete and return to the Church Office. 13 Church Etiquette When attending Divine Services we all have the responsibility of maintaining proper decorum and atmosphere in the church. The very first thing to keep in mind is that we are to be at Divine Services on time. The church is the House of God. Reverence and good manners are required at all times. No irreverent or irrelevant conversations should go on in the Narthex or in the church proper. There are certain times during the Divine Services when no one should be moving about, or entering the church, or being seated at a pew. Wherever a person happens to be at these moments, he or she should stop and stand reverently until the proper moment to be seated. These times are: 1. During the Doxology, while the priest is censing. 2. During the Small Entrance - The procession of the priest and altar boys with the Holy Gospel. 3. When the priest censes the Altar, icons, and congregation throughout the Divine Liturgy. 4. During the reading of the Epistle and Gospel. 5. During the sermon. 6. During the Great Entrance - the procession of the priest and altar boys with the Holy Gifts. 7. During the recitation of the Creed and Lord s Prayer (Our Father). 8. During the Consecration of the Holy Gifts. (Se Imnoumen) 9. During Holy Communion. To receive Holy Communion the faithful should come forth from the side aisles and exit via the centre aisle to return to their pew. 10. When receiving any sacrament of the church, use your baptismal/chrismation name. 11. During any special services such as Memorials or blessing of the loaves, special doxologies, etc. The general rule is that whenever the priest is outside the Holy Altar either with the censer or for giving a blessing, there should be no movement in the church. Also, we remind everyone that we should attend the Divine Liturgy and all services of divine worship from the beginning. Please remember that Parish Council members are obligated to maintain order and decorum in the church during worship. Please try to understand us. Cooperate with us. 15 Εκκλησιαστική Εθιμοτυπία Όταν είμαστε στην εκκλησία, όλοι έχουμε την ευθύνη να κρατήσουμε την σωστή ευπρέπεια και ατμόσφαιρα του ναού. Το πρώτο πράγμα που πρέπει να θυμόμαστε είναι ότι πρέπει να είμαστε στην εκκλησία στην ώρα μας. Η εκκλησία είναι ο οίκος του Θεού. Η ευλάβεια και οι σωστοί τρόποι απαιτούνται πάντα. Δεν πρέπει να γίνεται άσχετη ή ασεβής συζήτηση στον Νάρθηκα ή μέσα στον ναό. Υπάρχουν μερικές στιγμές στις ακολουθίες που κανένας δεν πρέπει να κινείται, η να μπαίνει στην εκκλησία, η να κάθεται. Όπου και να βρίσκεται ο άνθρωπος σε αυτές τις στιγμές, πρέπει να σταματήσει και να σταθεί όρθιος με σεβασμό έως την κατάλληλη στιγμή να καθίσει. Αυτές οι στιγμές είναι, 1. Στην Δοξολογία, όταν ο ιερέας θυμιάζει. 2. Στην Μικρή Είσοδο, στην διάρκεια της πομπής του Ευαγγελίου με τα ιερόπαιδα και τον ιερέα. 3. Όταν ο ιερέας θυμιάζει το Ιερό, τις εικόνες, και τον κόσμο στην διάρκεια της Θείας Λειτουργίας. 4. Στην ανάγνωση του Αποστόλου και του Ευαγγελίου. 5. Στο κήρυγμα. 6. Στην Μεγάλη Είσοδο, στην διάρκεια της πομπής των Αγίων Δώρων με τα ιερόπαιδα και τον ιερέα. 7. Στην απαγγελία του Πιστεύω και της Κυριακής Προσευχής (Πάτερ Ημών). 8. Στην Αναφορά (καθαγίαση) Των Αγίων Δώρων (Στον ύμνο Σε Υμνούμεν). 9. Στην Θεία Κοινωνία. Για να λάβουν τη Θεία Κοινωνία, οι πιστοί έρχονται από το πλάι και επιστρέφουν στις θέσεις τους από το μεσαίο διάδρομο. 10. Όταν λαμβάνουμε ένα Μυστήριο της Εκκλησίας, χρησιμοποιούμε το βαπτιστικό μας όνομα. 11. Σε ειδικές ακολουθίες, σαν τα μνημόσυνα, τις αρτοκλασίες, ειδικές δοξολογίες, κλπ. Ο γενικός κανόνας είναι, όταν ο ιερέας είναι εκτός του Ιερού, είτε με το θυμιατό ή για να δώσει ευλογία, δεν γίνεται κίνηση στην εκκλησία. Επίσης, θυμίζουμε όλους ότι πρέπει να είμαστε στην Λειτουργία και σε όλες τις ακολουθίες από την αρχή. Μη ξεχνάτε ότι τα μέλη του συμβουλίου είναι υποχρεωμένα να κρατήσουν την τάξη και την ευπρέπεια στην εκκλησία. Ζητάμε την κατανόηση σας. Συνεργαστείτε μαζί μας. Οι ιερείς είναι εδώ να υπηρετήσουν. Η συνεργασία σας στην παρακολούθηση αυτών των κανονισμών θα μα βοηθήσει πολύ στο έργο μας να προσφέρουμε τη βοήθεια μας σε όλες τις πνευματικές ανάγκες σας. 15

18 Thoughts from our Parish Priest Συγχώρεση και Συγνώμη για τη Μεγάλη Τεσσαρακοστή Με τον εσπερινό της συγνώμης, που τελείται το βράδυ της Κυριακής της Τυρινής, η Εκκλησία του Χριστού μας ανοίγει την Μεγάλη Τεσσαρακοστή. Η κατανυκτική αυτή περίοδος μετανοίας προσφέρεται ως τρόπος ζωής. Τρόπος ζωής που θα φέρει την συγχώρηση από τον Θεό, αλλά και από τους άλλους αδελφούς μας. Και είναι πολύ χαρακτηριστικό αυτό που έχει γραφτεί: το συν-χωρώ σημαίνει πως χωρώ μαζί με τον Θεό, μαζί με τους συνάνθρωπους μου. Με τη συγχώρεση δεν παίρνουμε μια απλή άφεση αμαρτιών - που είναι μια νομική και λανθασμένη αντίληψη της σωτηρίας. Αλλα με τη συγχώρεση με τον Θεό, ο ωκεανός της θείας αγαθότητας εξαφανίζει τις ανθρώπινες αμαρτίες. Και έτσι στην πλήρη της πραγματικότητα η συγχώρεση γίνεται κοινωνία Χριστού και της Βασιλείας Του. Κατα τη διάρκεια της πορείας μας, ας αλληλοστηριζόμαστε στην αδυναμία μας, ας αλληλοσυγχωρούμαστε ξεχνώντας όλες τις διαφορές, ας άλληλοπροστατευόμαστε, ώστε όλοι να φτάσουμε τον προορισμό μας. Αυτο που πρέπει ουσιαστικά να ζήσουμε είναι ότι ο Θεός μας καλεί σε μια μοναδική ενότητα με τη συγνώμη που θα προσφέρουμε ο ένας στον άλλον. Ας γονατίσουμε λοιπόν τώρα μπροστά στην εικόνα του Χριστού και της Παναγίας, στον κλήρο (και εγώ στους αδερφούς ιερείς), στους αδελφούς μας, ας τους ζητήσουμε να μας συγχωρέσουν, έχουν τόσα πολλά να μας συγχωρέσουν. Ας συγχωρέσουμε και ο ένας τον άλλο. Η συγχώρεση δεν αρχίζει τη στιγμή που βασιλεύουν η ειρήνη, η γαλήνη και η χαρά, η συγχώρεση αρχίζει τη στιγμή που παίρνουμε στους ώμους μας αλλήλων τα βάρη και το πρώτο και βαρύτερο φορτίο είναι η προσωπικότητα του άλλου, αυτό που εκείνος είναι, και όχι μονό αυτό που κάνει η που δεν κάνει. Αν χρειαστεί, ας μεταφέρουμε τον άλλο με τον τρόπο που ο Χριστός μετέφερε τον Σταυρό Του, σαν τύπο βασανισμού και πόνου και θανάτου, ας μην αφήσουμε όμως με κανένα τρόπο τον άλλο πίσω χωρίς τη συγχώρεση μας. Ας μην αφήσουμε και τους εαυτούς μας να αρχίσουμε το πνευματικό ταξίδι της Τεσσαρακοστής χωρίς να έχουμε μετανοήσει και να έχουμε ζητήσει συγνώμη. 18

19 Thoughts from our Parish Priest Asking and Receiving Forgiveness for Great Lent With Forgiveness Vespers, which is celebrated on Cheesefare Sunday evening, Great Lent begins. This solemn period of repentance is offered to us as a way of life. A way of life that brings forgiveness from God, as well as from our brethren. It is very characteristic what is written: "Forgive (συγχωρῶ) means to 'move forward' (χωρῶ) with God and with others." With forgiveness we do not only receive a simple absolution, which implies a legalistic concept of salvation. Rather, forgiveness with God is an ocean of divine goodness that erases human sins. And so in its full reality, forgiveness becomes communion with Christ and His Kingdom. During the course of our journey, let us mutually support one another in our weaknesses, let us mutually forgive one another by forgetting our differences, let us mutually protect one another to reach our destination. Essentially we should live to what God calls us, as a unique unity with the forgiveness that we offer to others. Let us now kneel, therefore, before the icon of Christ and the Panagia, our clergy (for me, my brother priests), as well as our brethren, and let us ask for their forgiveness, since they have much to forgive us for. And let us forgive one another. Forgiveness does not begin when peace, calmness and joy begin to reign; forgiveness begins the moment we take on each others shoulders the "burdens of one another", and the first and heaviest load is the personhood of another, what that person is, and not what that person does or does not do. If necessary let us carry one another as Christ carried His Cross, as a type of torment, pain and death, but let us not leave someone behind under any circumstance without our forgiveness. Let us also not begin this Lenten Journey without having repented and asked for forgiveness ourselves. 19

20 Church Iconography Program Beloved in Christ, As you can see our iconography program is moving well. There are only two large murals left that have not been donated. At this point, all the spaces on the bottom halves of the walls for individual saints have been filled. There are still opportunities to donate, as we are changing the small icons on the iconostasis (temblon) of our Altar, since the current ones have been aged and darkened. There are still some that are available. For a list of those icons, please contact me directly. The price for a scriptural scene (upper half of the walls) panel is $9,500. The price of the icons on the iconostasis is $2,500. You can also make a general donation toward the iconography of the church, as many people have done already. 22 Dear parishioners, friends, family, hello. The Ladies of Philoptochos I am very happy, that with God's help, I was selected to serve for a third time as president of the Ladies of Philoptochos. I would like to tell you two thoughts about Philoptochos. Philoptochos equals philanthropy, this is the mandate of Philoptochos, to help where there is need, and believe me there is a great need. We help the poor, the sick, those in prison, the needy, newcomers, and many others, and amongst it all there is our church. Our church is our home, and because of this we take care of our church so that our church can be there to take care of us; the icon stand, rugs, icons, granite tiles, concrete, the main hall (renovation), chairs, tables, table clothes, the kitchen (renovation), plates, glasses, and many more. You may be wondering why I am writing all of this. I write it because I want you to know that philanthropy can do all of these things, but only with your help, attendance, committees, love, and support. As you can see, the right hand of Philoptochos is the Church Community, and Philoptochos is the right hand of our Church. Because of this I wanted to ask that you continue helping Philoptochos so that we can continue our charitable works. "The one hand washes the other, and both wash the face." Η Σελίδα της Φιλοπτώχου Είμαι πολύ χαρούμενη, που πάλι με την βοήθεια του Θεού, αξιώθηκα να υπηρετήσω για τρίτη φορά στην Φιλοπτωχο Αδελφότητα ως πρόεδρος της. Θέλω να σας πω δύο λόγια για το έργο της Φιλοπτωχου. Φιλοπτωχος ίσον φιλανθρωπια, αυτό είναι το έργο της Φιλοπτωχου, να βοηθάει εκεί που υπάρχει ανάγκη και πίστεψέ με υπάρχει μεγάλη ανάγκη. Βοηθάει φτωχούς, άρρωστους, φυλακισμένους, ανήμπορους, νεοφερμένους και πολλούς άλλους και μεταξύ όλων είναι και η Εκκλησία μας. Η εκκλησία μας είναι το σπίτι μας και γιαυτό την προσέχουμε για να είναι εκεί να μας προσέχει κ'αυτη. Τέμπλο, χαλιά, εικόνες, γρανίτες, τσιμέντα, υπόγειο (ανακαίνιση), καρέκλες, τραπέζια, τραπεζομάντιλα, κουζίνα (ανακαίνιση), πιάτα, ποτήρια και τόσα άλλα. Θα αναρωτηθείτε γιατί σας τα γράφω όλα αυτά. Τα γράφω γιατί θέλω να ξέρετε ότι η φιλόπτωχος για να μπορεί να κάνει όλα αυτά τα έργα, τα κάνει μόνο με την δική σας βοήθεια, συμμετοχή, συμβουλή, αγάπη, υποστήριξη. 24 Sunday School Programs for Kids & Adults: Ages 3-18 years (Kindergarten to Grade 12) When: Sundays, after Holy Communion 11:45-12:30 p.m. in the Manitoba Hellenic Cultural Centre classrooms. February 5 is the Sunday of the Publican and the Pharisee! Triodion begins, and with it, the very popular Lenten Passport Program. While especially for the children, we have ordered some extra so please feel free to ask us if you would like one for yourself. The Passports are a great way to highlight the Lenten Journey from Triodion to Pascha...one stamp for each service, and spaces for prayer and Scripture readings. The explanations make Pascha more meaningful for everyone. Anyone wishing to make a donation in any amount to help defray the cost of the program is welcome to do so. Please see Victoria Marckx for details February also marks another Orthodox Book order for the Library. Order books for your children or grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and godchildren for Pascha! Order forms will be going out soon to the Sunday School Students. The book sale benefits the Library. Parents whose children have library books...please return them so others can borrow them! Parent volunteers are needed to provide healthy Sunday School snacks for our children. Please check with Victoria Marckx for days we need a snack provided, and for dietary restrictions and other details The Children's Lenten Retreat will be held this year on Saturday, April 1. As with last year, the retreat will be for children ages 3 - grade six, and will feature games, activities, crafts, and lunch. The retreat will run from 9:30 am to 1 pm, and is free of charge for all students, although registration is required. Parents, a list of food items we need donated will be sent to all parents. The students enjoyed coming back to Greek School at the beginning of the month and then ended the month with our annual Three Hierarchs Celebration. Thank you to all who attended and supported this event. February is Parent Teacher month. Report cards will be distributed February 4 th. 35 Hellenic Professionals Association of Manitoba About the organization The Hellenic Professional Association of Manitoba (HPAM) was founded in The mission of the HPAM is to promote the unique qualities of our Hellenic heritage and culture within the diverse, multi-ethnic society of Canada. The HPAM strives to achieve visibility for our community whether by participating in multi-cultural events or by taking part in public affairs. The HPAM also acts as an intermediary body, providing assistance and support for Hellenes in their community affairs and information for those inquiring about the Hellenic community. As well, the HPAM encourages its members to foster personal relationships by participating in activities and events organized by the organization, by sitting on committees, and by communicating personal views and ideas. The HPAM also supports the youth of the Community, by serving as mentors and guides to young people who wish to pursue a professional career, and through its support of the Community Greek School. Our organization is approximately 50 members strong. Our current 2016 / 2017 Board of Directors are George Argyriou, Stasa Veroukis, Agapi Katrakis, Mike Houvardas, Maria Mitousis, Reannah Hocken, Demos Polyzois, and Louesa Polyzoi. Our youth in grades 7-12 will be researching and writing on topics set by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, and sharing their views on how their faith meets their lives. Please plan to stay a little later than usual at coffee hour on February 19 to listen to and encourage our youth. This will be a juried event, with the judges coming from other Orthodox parishes than our own. It's been many years since the Oratorical Festival has been held in Winnipeg, and we hope you will be pleased with what you hear. A big thank you to all that helped make New Years Eve a success either by working hard in the kitchen, decorating, donating food items, money, vasilopites, baskets for the draw, serving or bar tending, and attending the event. Deliveries can be received Monday - Friday from 10.00am 4.00pm. 8. Complimentary use of our Parking space and Coat Check (with every rental). 9. A damage deposit of $500 and a 50% deposit of the full rental are required at the time of booking. Full payment must be completed at least one week prior to the event. 10. FOR MEMBERS: Please note that all booking must have a deposit and a signature to be placed in the Community Calendar no exceptions. 11. We reserve the right to refuse or accept an applicant. 12.
