2 WEEKLY MESSAGE On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water. " (John ) The response from those gathered in the Temple was not surprising. Many said, Truly this is the Prophet! (John 7.40) Unfortunately others were not convinced. Many within the Jewish elite, the respected leaders of the community, instead of thirsting for God, thirsted instead for their own power and authority. Then the Pharisees answered them, Are you also deceived? Have any of the rulers or the Pharisees believed in Him? But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed. " (John ) Each of us must determine for ourselves whether we thirst for God, or whether we seek our own power and authority. If we thirst for God, only then will our thirst be quenched and we will be satisfied. If we thirst for power and authority, then anyone and everyone who has either becomes our enemy, and our thirst will never be satisfied. The Holy Apostles taught There are two ways, one of life and one of death; but a great difference between the two ways. The way of life, then, is this: First, you shall love God who made you; second, your neighbor as yourself; and all things whatsoever you would should not occur to you, do not also do to another. And of these sayings the teaching is this: Bless those who curse you, and pray for your enemies, and fast for those who persecute you. For what reward is there, if you love those who love you? Do not also the Gentiles do the same? But love those who hate you, and you shall not have an enemy. Abstain from fleshly and worldly lusts. If someone gives you a blow upon your right cheek, turn to him the other also, and you shall be perfect. If someone impresses you for one mile, go with him two. If someone takes away your cloak, give him also your coat. If someone takes from you what is yours, ask it not back, for indeed you are not able. Give to everyone that asks you, and ask it not back; for the Father wills that to all should be given of our own blessings (free gifts). Happy is he that gives according to the commandment; for he is guiltless. Woe to him that receives; for if one having need receives, he is guiltless; but he that receives not having need, shall pay the penalty, why he received and for what, and, coming into straits (confinement), he shall be examined concerning the things which he has done, and he shall not escape thence until he pay back the last farthing. Matthew 5:26 But also now concerning this, it has been said, Let your alms sweat in your hands, until you know to whom you should give. (Didache) The way of death is constantly being thirsty but never having enough water to drink, while the way of life is nurtured by the Holy Spirit and a river of cool refreshing water gushes from our heart for all eternity.

5 EPISTLE Acts of the Apostles 2:1-11 W hen the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. And they were amazed and wondered, saying, "Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontos and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians, we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God." GOSPEL John 7:37-52; 8:12 O n the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and proclaimed, "If any one thirst, let him come to me and drink. " Now this he said about the Spirit, which those who believed in him were to receive; for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. When they heard these words, some of the people said, "This is really the prophet." Others said, "This is the Christ." But some said, "Is the Christ to come from Galilee? Has not the scripture said that the Christ is descended from David, and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David was?" So there was a division among the people over him. Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him. The officers then went back to the chief priest and Pharisees, who said to them, "Why did you not bring him?" The officers answered, "No man ever spoke like this man!" The Pharisees answered them, "Are you led astray, you also? Have any of the authorities or of the Pharisees believed in him? But this crowd, who do not know the law, are accursed." Nikodemos, who had gone to him before, and who was one of them, said to them, "Does our law judge a man without first giving him a hearing and learning what he does?" They replied, "Are you from Galilee too? Search and you will see that no prophet is to rise from Galilee." Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."

Resurrectional Apolytikion Blessed are You, O Christ our God. You made the fishermen all-wise, by sending down upon them the Holy Spirit, and through them You drew the world into Your net. O Lover of mankind, glory to You. Kontakion When the Most High God came down and confused the tongues, He divided the nations. When He distributed the tongues of fire, He called all to unity. And with one voice we glorify the all-holy Spirit. Saints and Feasts of the Week HOLY PENTECOST After the Savior's Ascension into the Heavens, the 11 Apostles and the rest of His disciples along with His Mother, the most holy Virgin Mary--about 120 souls--returned from the Mount of Olives to Jerusalem. Entering into the house where they gathered, they went into the upper room, and there they persevered in prayer and supplication, awaiting the coming of the Holy Spirit, as their Divine Teacher had promised them. In the meanwhile, they chose Matthias, who was elected to take the place of Judas. Thus, on this day, the seventh Sunday of Pascha, the 10th day after the Ascension and the 50th day after Pascha, at the third hour of the day from the rising of the sun, there suddenly came a sound from Heaven, as when a mighty wind blows, and it filled the whole house where the Apostles and the rest with them were gathered. Immediately after, there appeared tongues of fire that divided and rested upon the head of each one. Filled with the Spirit, all those present began speaking not in their native tongue, but in other tongues and dialects, as the Holy Spirit instructed them. The multitudes that had come together from various places for the feast, spoke many different tongues, but they were present in Jerusalem by divine dispensation. When they heard that sound that came down from Heaven to the place where the disciples of Christ were gathered, all ran to learn what had taken place. But they were confounded when they heard the Apostles speaking in their own tongues. Marveling at this, they said "Behold, are not all these which speak Galileans? And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?" Others, because of their foolishness, mocked the wonder and said that the Apostles were drunken. Then Peter stood up with the 11, and raising his voice, spoke to all the people, proving that that which had taken place was not drunkenness, but the fulfilment of God's promise: "And it shall come to pass in the last

7 Saints and Feasts of the Week days, that I shall pour out of My Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and daughters shall prophesy" (Joel 2:28), and he preached Jesus of Nazareth unto them, proving in many ways that He is Christ the Lord, Whom the Jews crucified but God raised from the dead. On hearing Peter's teaching, many were smitten with compunction and received the word. Thus, they were baptized, and on that day about three thousand souls were added to the Faith of Christ. Such, therefore, are the reasons for today's feast: the coming of the All-holy Spirit into the world, the completion of the Lord Jesus Christ's promise, and the fulfilment of the hope of the sacred disciples, which we celebrate today. All foods allowed during the week following Pentecost. MONDAY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT As it is the custom of the Church, on the day after every great Feast, to honor those through whom it came to pass our Lady on the day after the Lord's Nativity, Joachim and Anna after our Lady's Nativity, the holy Baptist the day after Theophany, and so forth, on this day we honor our God the All-holy Spirit, the Comforter promised by our Savior to His disciples (John 14:16), Who descended upon them at holy Pentecost and guided them "into all truth" and through them, us. Rest from labor. ΚΥΡΙΑΚΗ ΤΗΣ ΠΕΝΤΗΚΟΣΤΗΣ Μετά την Ανάληψη του Κυρίου στους ουρανούς, οι Απόστολοι και οι υπόλοιποι μαθητές του, καθώς και η Παναγία Παρθένος Μαρία η Μητέρα του, περίπου 120 άτομα, γύρισαν στην Ιερουσαλήμ και, μπαίνοντας στο υπερώο, δηλαδή στον πάνω όροφο του σπιτιού εκεί, περίμεναν με προσευχή την επιφοίτηση του Αγίου Πνεύματος, σύμφωνα με την υπόσχεση του Σωτήρα Χριστού. Στο μεταξύ, συναρίθμησαν και τον Ματθία με τους ένδεκα Αποστόλους. Πληρωθέντες από το Πνεύμα το Άγιο, άρχισαν να κηρύττουν και να καλούν τους ανθρώπους να βαπτισθούν και να λάβουν κι αυτοί την χάρη του Αγίου Πνεύματος. Ό,τι είχαν ακούσει και ζήσει κοντά στο Χριστό και δεν το είχαν τότε κατανοήσει, τώρα εν Αγίω Πνεύματι το γνώρισαν και το επαγγέλλονται στο λαό. Τώρα γνωρίζουν ποια είναι η προοπτική της καινής ζωής και που πρέπει να οδηγήσουν το λαό, γι αυτό και τους πρώτους τρεις χιλιάδες που βαπτίστηκαν, τους οδηγούν στο Δείπνο της Ζωής, την Τράπεζα της Θείας Ευχαριστίας, όπου στο εξής θα βρίσκεται συναγμένη η Εκκλησία ως σώμα Χριστού, θα τρέφεται με το Σώμα και το Αίμα του Κυρίου και θα συμμετέχει έτσι στην αιώνια ζωή της Βασιλείας του Θεού. Με την Πεντηκοστή δεν γεννήθηκε η Εκκλησία ως απλός θεσμός, αλλά ως συνεχής παρουσία της χάριτος του Αγίου Πνεύματος. ΤΟΥ ΑΓΙΟΥ ΠΝΕΥΜΑΤΟΣ Την Δευτέρα μετά την Πεντηκοστή, η Εκκλησία μας εορτάζει το Άγιο Πνεύμα, το τρίτο πρόσωπο της Αγίας Τριάδας, το οποίο εκπορεύεται εκ του Πατρός. Είναι ομοούσιο με τα πρόσωπα του Πατρός και του Υιού και κατά το Σύμβολο της Πίστεως «συνπροσκυνείται και συνδοξάζεται» με τον Πατέρα και με τον Υιό, ίσο κατά τη λατρεία και την τιμή.
