(Part 3) Education and understanding help ignite a fire of motivation that produces active faith - full of movement, questioning, seeking, and growth. Below is the third installment of an explanation of Orthros / Matins with the hope of encouraging this kind of dynamic faith. God can do as He pleases, but He respects our freedom and looks for our cooperation. A little attentive effort creates space within us, an opening through which God can do wondrous things. Orthros is intended to be a daily morning service, and it always precedes Divine Liturgy. It is as if the Church is telling us: Begin your day with God! Organize your life around Him. He rouses you from the heaviness of sleep; He gives you a new day; He identifies with you intimately in the person and teachings of Christ. Glory to God! Eothinon / Morning Gospel: After a hymn of praise is chanted 3 times - Let everything that breathes praise the Lord! - the priest reads the Eothinon Gospel. This is considered Orthros climax, as the passage recounts the events following Christ s Resurrection; the sorrow of the disciples and myrrh-bearers is transformed into unspeakable joy. A prayer of praise is then offered in response to the good news of the Resurrection. It ends as follows: Through the Cross, joy has come to the whole world. Blessing the Lord always, let us praise His Resurrection; for having endured the Cross for us, He destroyed death by death. (Note: on regular days and minor feasts, an Orthros Gospel is not included; for major feasts and saints, selected Gospel passages with non-resurrectional themes are read.) Psalm 50: Psalm 50 - the prayer of repentance par excellence - is read or chanted every Orthros. This prayer is the experience of every human; the only variable is the depth of our repentance (i.e. awareness of our nothingness before the greatness of God). Several notable lines: Y ou love truth; teach me wisdom in my secret heart Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew my spirit within me Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit The acceptable sacrifice is a broken spirit; God will not despise a broken and humbled heart. Prayer of Intercession: Then we seek intercession (i.e. help) from the Theotokos, the Cross, the angels, specific saints representing the major categories of saints (e.g. apostles, ascetics, martyrs), the saint(s) of the day, and all saints. Grace has given glorified saints a certain power. They are eager to visit us, help us, and bring our prayers to the throne of Christ. Above all, they are with us in the celebration of the Eucharist, the grand assembly in which all believers lift up the world in thanksgiving to God. Megalynarion to the Theotokos: Every Orthros includes a hymn repeated 6 times in honor of the Mother of God, the Theotokos: More honorable than the Cherubim Verses precede each repetition, taken from the Virgin Mary s Hymn of Praise (Luke 1:46-55). During the chanting, the priest censes the altar table, icons, and all the faithful (since we are all living icons of God imbued with His breath and life). The Praises: The first 2 verses of Psalm 148 are chanted with fervor in the mode of the day: Let everything that breathes praise the Lord Thereafter, verses from Psalms precede 8 Resurrectional hymns recounting all God has done and endured for us; some or all of these hymns may be dedicated to the feast / saint of the day. Thereafter, a longer hymn ( Doxastikon ) is chanted slowly; it explores the spiritual depth of either the Eothinon Gospel or the feast / saint of the day. The Great Doxology: Orthros concludes with a festive chanting of the Great Doxology: Glory to Y ou who showed the light. Glory to God in the highest and peace, good-will to humankind This is essentially a collection of short hymns, all of which praise God and ask for His mercy.

Saints and Feasts The holy Great Martyr Thekla, Equal to and Peer of the Apostles; the great miracle of the Mother of God on the island of Kythira, where the icon of the Theotokos was found in a myrtlebush and healed a paralytic. Resurrectional Hymn (Grave Mode) By Your Cross, O Lord, You destroyed death. To the thief You opened Paradise; the myrrh-bearers sorrow You transformed into joy. And you sent Your Apostles forth to proclaim that You had risen from the dead, Christ our God, bestowing on all the world Your great mercy. Hymn of the Theotokos (4 th Mode) O come, all you people, let us in faith clap our hands * and sing sacred songs to her who is the Mother of God, * and longingly cry aloud: * "Rejoice, O protection of all those who entreat you; * rejoice, the salvation of those who honor you with longing; * rejoice, O Lady who restored * the paralyzed man to health." Hymn of the Saint (3 rd Mode) All aflame with love for your Creator, * from the teachings of the sacred preacher, * you disregarded as fleeting all things mundane. * And being bold in the face of the penalties, * you gave yourself as a beautiful gift to God. * Thecla, glorious companion of the Apostle Paul, * we pray you entreat your Bridegroom, Christ, * and ask Him to grant us His great mercy. Hymn of the Archangels Supreme Commanders of * the hosts of the Heavens * we, the unworthy, seek and beseech you * that by your supplications you encircle us * in the shelter of the wings * of your heavenly glory * guarding us who now fall down * and cry to you with fervor. * Deliver us from dangers of all kinds * as the great marshals * of the heavenly hosts on high. Kontakion (2 nd Mode) A protection of Christians unshamable, * intercessor to our Holy Maker, unwavering. * Please reject not * the prayerful cries of those who are in sin. * Instead, come to us, for you are good; * your loving help bring unto us, * who are crying in faith to you. * Hasten to intercede, * and speed now to supplicate, * as a protection for all time, * Theotokos, for those who honor you.

Indeed all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evil men and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceivers and deceived. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings which are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. Luke 5:1-11 At that time, Jesus was standing by the lake of Gennesaret. And he saw two boats by the lake; but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon's, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. And when he had ceased speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch." And Simon answered, "Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets." And when they had done this, they enclosed a great shoal of fish; and as their nets were breaking, they beckoned to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord." For he was astonished, and all who were with him, at the catch of fish which they had taken; and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid; henceforth you will be catching men." And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him. 4 Τι Είναι ο Όρθρος; (Μέρος 3) ΕΩΘΙΝΟ ΕΥΑΓΓΕΛΙΟ: Αναγιγνώσκεται μέσα στο ΙερόΒήμα, όπου η Αγ.Τράπεζα συμβολίζει τον Πανάγιο Τάφο και ο ιερεύς τον Άγγελο που αναγγέλλει το χαρμόσυνο γεγονός της Αναστάσεως «καθήμενος εν τοις δεξιοις». Υπάρχουν 11 Εωθινά Ευαγγέλια. Μετά την ανάγνωση του Ευαγγελίου ο ιερεύς το περιφέρει μέσα στο Ναό για να το ασπαστούν οι πιστοί, ενώ ψάλλεται κατανυκτικά ο 50ος ψαλμός της μετανοίας συνήθως στον ήχο της ημέρας, αφού προηγουμένως είχε απαγγελθεί το «Ανάστασιν χριστού θεασάμενοι», η Διακήρυξη αυτή του Μυστηρίου της Θείας ενανθρωπήσεως και του Πάθους καθώς και του μεγάλου Θαύματος της Αναστάσεως που αποτελεί τον Θεμέλιο Λίθο της Πίστεώς μας. ΩΔΗ ΤΗΣ ΠΑΝΑΓΙΑΣ: Εδώ τελειώνουν οι καταβασίες με την «Τιμιωτέρα» που απευθύνεται προς την Παναγία με στίχους από τον Ευαγγελισμό της Θεοτόκου, ενώ ο ιερεύς θυμιατίζει την Αγ.Τράπεζα, τα Ιερά Εικονίσματα καιέναν-έναν όλους τους πιστούς. ΕΞΑΠΟΣΤΕΙΛΑΡΙΑ: Σε ρυθμό περιγραφικό και σύντομο ψάλλεται η διήγηση του Εωθινού Ευαγγελίου. Είναι 11, αντίστοιχα προς τα Ευαγγέλια. Πήραν το όνομά τους από τη φράση του Ψαλμού «ο εξαποστέλλων το φως και πορεύεται». Φράση σχετική με τον Όρθρο. ΑΙΝΟΙ: Ψάλλονται στον ήχο της ημέρας. Ξεκινούν με το «Πάσα πνοή..» δηλαδή καθετί που αναπνέει, όλοι μας και σε κάθε χρονική στιγμή ας δοξολογούμε τον Κύριο. Τα τροπάρια αυτά περιγράφουν λεπτομέρειες από τα γεγονότα του Πάθους και της Αναστάσεως στον ήχο της ημέρας. Αν υπάρχει και άλλη εορτή συμπληρώνονται με τροπάρια της εορτής. Οι αίνοι καταλήγουν στο Δοξαστικό. Είναι αργό τροπάριο που χρωματίζει με την ωραιότατη μελωδία της βυζαντινής μουσικής την Αναστάσιμη περιγραφή του Εωθινού Ευαγγελίου. Φυσικά έχουμε 11 Δοξαστικά. Αν είναι μεγάλη Εορτή, το Αναστάσιμο Δοξαστικό της Κυριακής αντικαθίσταται με εκείνο της Εορτής. ΔΟΞΟΛΟΓΙΑ: Ψάλλεται στον ήχο του Δοξαστικού, και αποτελεί την πανηγυρική κατάληξη του Όρθρου. Έτσι οι χριστιανοί πλημμυρισμένοι από τη χαρά και τη ελπίδα της Αναστάσεως προσέρχονται με κατάνυξη στο Μυστικό Δείπνο της Ζωής.
