Hopefully, the project will resume next month after special tiles are manufactured to accommodate the apses flanking the Sanctuary. Their flat roofs will be replaced with pitched ones. In the meantime, parishioners are asked to be mindful of the construction area and limit use of the courtyard to access the Cathedral. DAUGHTERS The Daughters of Penelope had a very lovely celebration on Saturday, September 14, at The Ritz Carlton. Order forms for the Daughters of Penelope Bake Sale are now available. All orders are to be submitted no later than November 18. Available to order are koulouria by the dozen, gift boxed baklava or finikia, and assorted boxes that include baklava, finikia, and kourabiedes. Please submit your orders as soon as possible to Chapter President Barbara Stavis Wolf or any other Chapter Officer. The next Daughters membership meeting will be Sunday, October 20, GREEK SCHOOL UNDERWAY There was a wonderful response to the adult and youth Greek School programs that instructor Fay Kalergi began last week. If you are uncertain of this year s schedule, please check below for appropriate listings. Adults: Intermediate Level Monday evenings from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm Adults: Beginning Level Wednesday evenings from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm Children: Saturday mornings from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm AND Sunday afternoon from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm Please note that the children s Sunday Greek School session is scheduled weekly except the last Sunday of each month when PTA hosts the HTC Family Day-Birthday Celebration. ICONOGRAPHY WORKSHOPS THIS WEEK Elias Damianakis from New Port Richey, Florida, will conduct iconography workshops this week for both the adults and the youth of our Cathedral Family. Registered participants will actually learn to write icons. 2 GENERAL ASSEMBLY IN SEPTEMBER A General Assembly will be held in the Hellenic Cultural Center today, Sunday, September 15, 2013, after Divine Liturgy. All parishioners, who are Members in Good Standing, are encouraged to attend. PHILOPTOCHOS COME AND SEE DINNER TICKETS Tickets for the Philoptochos fundraiser will be available next week. Your donation of $55 per person will afford you an evening of unique tablescapes, Greek appetizers, a delicious Greek buffet, and the excitement generated by the Silent Auction. Wine will be sold by the glass or the bottle. Plan now to attend this gala, which is one of two annual fundraisers that sustain the worthy philanthropic projects of Philoptochos. To secure your reservations, contact Ticket Chairpersons Diane Chronis at or Koula Vennis at SILENT AUCTION The entire community is asked to assist Philoptochos in soliciting items for the Silent Auction. All items are welcome but must be given to Auction Chairperson Helen Malachias or Viki Moustoukas by October 1, Additional solicitation letters are available in the Narthex and the Cathedral office. Your support will be deeply appreciated. PTA MEETING NEXT WEEK It is important that all members of Holy Trinity Cathedral PTA meet next Sunday, September 22, in the Boardroom for the first meeting. New officers will be elected. H Y M N O L O G Y I N S T R U C T I O N New for Sunday School Year The Education, Cultural and Youth Ministries Committee is excited to announce that Hymnology Instruction has been added to the Sunday School curriculum. Each month students of all ages will learn a liturgical hymn. "Se Imnoumen - We Praise You" will be chanted each Sunday in September. This is the most sacred hymn of the Divine Liturgy. As the congregation kneels, the Holy Spirit descends to transform the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. The procedure for this endeavor will be as follows: Immediately after Holy Communion..(same wording you have now)...for the lessons. Please add this - PARENTS AND GRANDPARENTS ARE WELCOME! Check for online postings of the weekly Sunday bulletins and the monthly issues of The Flame. PHILOPTOCHOS MEMORIAL Today, we remember and honor Reverend Father William G. Gaines with a one year Memorial Service and Presbytera Alice Gaines with a three year Memorial Service. A reception sponsored by Philoptochos will follow in the Coffee Room. SPECIAL TRAY FOR HELLENIC COLLEGE-HOLY CROSS SEMINARY Each year on the Sunday following the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, Philoptochos asks for your financial support of Hellenic College-Holy Cross School of Theology. These funds are used to award scholarships to worthy and dedicated students to assist them with their tuition expenses. Donations raised are also used for the operational expenses of the school. Thank you for your continued support. COLLEGE STUDENT SUNDAY Today, September 15, we celebrate College Student Sunday by recognizing and honoring our college students and bringing awareness to Orthodox campus ministries. Viki Moustoukas, Philoptochos Orthodox Christian Fellowship (OCF) chairperson, has sent college packets to our recent high school graduates Constance Stokes, Lindsay Andrews, and Alex Korominas to help them stay connected to Christ and His Church. Visiting Orthodox college students may need a ride to church. If you are able to offer them a ride, you can help by giving your name to the Cathedral office. This may be the biggest factor in whether a student is able to attend church or not. SENIOR CITIZENS LUNCHEON Senior Citizens are invited to our first luncheon on Tuesday, September 17, 2013, at 11:30 am in the Coffee Room. Margo Stamoulis has graciously offered to sponsor this luncheon in memory of her parents, Mary and Isidoros Stamoulis. CANNED GOOD DRIVE Philoptochos has learned that a family is in need of canned goods. If you would like to donate canned goods, you may bring them to the collection bin in the Coffee Room. Thank you. GARAGE SALE Philoptochos is making plans for the annual Garage Sale on October 5 and 6. Thanks to all those who have offered their cars and vans and brought items to the hall. More help is needed. If you are able to volunteer a truck or van to transport these items, you may contact Garage Sale Chairman Elaine Nugent at BACK TO SCHOOL Philoptochos thanks everyone, who has already brought in school supplies. We shall continue to collect pencils, erasers, notebooks, and crayons until next Sunday. Items may be placed in the bag in the Coffee Room. THE GREAT MARTYR NIKITA SEPTEMBER 15 We commemorate St. Nikita, who was of high birth among the Goths beyond the Danube River. He was taken by Athanaric, pagan ruler of the Goths, and after being tortured, was burned to death for his confession of Christ.

3 ELEVATION OF THE HOLY CROSS The Sunday after the Elevation of the Holy Cross expounds the theme that the cross, an ancient device of shame and torturous death, was changed by Christ into the very Tree of Life by which the wounds we receive in this world are healed, our very lives are refreshed and transformed, and we are brought into everlasting life in the eternal kingdom of God. But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we ourselves were found to be sinners, is Christ then an agent of sin? Certainly not! But if I build up again those things which I tore down, then I prove myself a transgressor. For I through the law died to the law, that I might live to God. THE GOSPEL Mark 8:34-38, 9:1 The Lord said: Whoever wishes to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For what can a man give in return for his life? For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." And he said to them, "Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power."
