Ασβεστώνουν λοιπόν τις εισόδους τους, γυαλίζουν τα ράφια τους, βάφουν τα κουφώματά τους, κρεμάνε τις επιγραφές με τα ονόματα των καταστημάτων τους και τα γραφικά στενάκια ξαφνικά μεταμορφώνονται σε λαμπερούς δρόμους, όπου η μία βιτρίνα «συναγωνίζεται» την άλλη για το ποια έχει πετύχει το πιο εντυπωσιακό αποτέλεσμα. Αυτή είναι η αγορά της Μυκόνου, η οποία επικεντρώνεται στη Χώρα. Εκθαμβωτικές βιτρίνες που δεν περνούν απαρατήρητες ούτε από τους πιο ορκισμένους εχθρούς του καταναλωτισμού. Οι πιο διάσημες φίρμες του πλανήτη βρίσκονται εδώ, για να ικανοποιήσουν μέχρι και τα πλέον ιδιαίτερα γούστα των διάσημων θαμώνων του νησιού. Τα τελευταία 15 χρόνια η τέχνη φαίνεται πως έχει ξανανθίσει για τα καλά στο νησί, αφού πολλοί Μυκονιάτες, λάτρεις της τέχνης, που έμεναν μόνιμα στην Αθήνα επέστρεψαν και άνοιξαν γκαλερί, που φιλοξενούν εκτός από πίνακες και άλλα έργα μοντέρνας κυρίως τέχνης, δίνοντας μια άλλη αξία στην κατά τ άλλα «εκθαμβωτική» αγορά της Μυκόνου. Εξίσου σημαντικά έργα τέχνης όμως αποτελούν τα χειροποίητα ψηφιδωτά, τα υφαντά και τα ασημένια κοσμήματα που κατασκευάζονται με πολύ γούστο και μεράκι από τους Μυκονιάτες, τα οποία θα βρείτε περιπλανώμενοι στα σοκάκια. SHOPPING/ΑΓΟΡΕΣ Mykonos art and handicraft By Dimitra Nazou* If you walk around the picturesque alleys of Mykonos you will find significant works of artists and craftsmen. Most of them are inspired from the island s beauty and tradition. In the art galleries of Chora you will find the works of great and famous painters as well as works of local artists such as paintings, and sculptures made of marble, wood and metal. Some painters paint unique wooden sings. Furthermore, you can find handmade jewellery made of gold or silver, having traditional as well as modern designs. There are also unique hand made jewellery and brooches made of simple material such as shells, stones and small glasses coming from the sea. There are still few weavers that weave scarves, bags, and rugs for sofas and bedspreads. You will find handmade bugs and wicker hats; unique dolls made of cloth or paper pulp representing characters from Mykonos legends. Craftsmen that know the sea construct little boats and large crafts made to order. In the rambling alleys of Chora you will see religious paintings, mosaic, and leather sandals workshops, while on the ring road there is a pottery workshop. Υπάρχουν ακόμη λίγες ανυφάντρες που υφαίνουν εσάρπες, τσάντες και χράμια για καναπέδες και στρώσεις κρεβατιού. Υπάρχουν χειροποίητες τσάντες και πλεκτά καπέλα. Επίσης μοναδικές κούκλες από ύφασμα ή χαρτοπολτό που τα θέματά τους είναι παρμένα από τους μύθους του νησιού. Τεχνίτες που είχαν σχέση με τη θάλασσα φτιάχνουν καραβάκια και μεγάλα σκαριά κατά παραγγελία. Στα δαιδαλώδη δρομάκια της Χώρας ανακαλύπτει κανείς εργαστήρια αγιογραφίας, ψηφιδωτού και δερμάτινων σανδαλιών και στον Περιφερειακό εργαστήριο με κεραμικά. Banks The banks on Mykonos are open 08:00-14:30 Monday to Thursday and 08:00-14:00 on Friday. ATMs are available in almost all villages on Mykonos. There are many private infirmaries of almost every specialization in Chora. There are four pharmacies in Chora and three out of Chora. Water Bottled water is recommended for drinking as tap water is suitable for bathing and cleaning your teeth. How to move around You will find the main taxi station in the square of Manto Maurogenous in Chora. You will be picked up from any place on the island you desire by making one phone call. The taxi price from the Airport to Chora is 8, from Chora to the Port 9. Local Buses run daily routes till late at night. The Bus Station to Kalafatis and Elia is above the Old Harbour, behind OTE building and the one for Aghios Stefanos and Tourlos is in the Old Harbour. In Fabrica region in Chora you may find the Bus Station to all other destinations. Ticket Prices: 1,70 to Elia and Kalafatis, 1,40 to other destinations.
