And to raise up the dead with Him through His own glorious Resurrection. Apolytikion of Holy Protection of the Theotokos Tis Skepis sou, Parthene ( Your Protecting Veil, O Virgin ) We sing the praise of the graces of your Protecting Veil, O Virgin, which like a light-bearing cloud you unfold beyond understanding, and you spiritually protect your people from every assault of their foe. For we have gained you as Protection and defender and helper, as we cry out to you: Glory to your mighty deeds, O Pure one; glory to your Protection; glory to your providence towards us, O Immaculate! THE EPISTLE The Reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 6:11-18 You, O Lord, shall keep us and preserve us. Verse: Save me, O Lord, for the godly man has failed. Brethren, see with what large letters I am writing to you with my own hand. It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh that would compel you to be circumcised, and only in order that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. For even those who receive circumcision do not themselves keep the law, but they desire to have you circumcised that they may glory in your flesh. But far be it from me to glory except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation. Peace and mercy be upon all who walk by this rule, upon the Israel of God. Henceforth let no man trouble me; for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brethren. Amen. THE GOSPEL The Reading is from the Gospel of Luke 8:41-56 At that time, there came to Jesus a man named Jairus, who was a ruler of the synagogue; and falling at Jesus' feet he besought him to come to his house, for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying. As he went, the people pressed round him. And a woman who had had a flow of blood for twelve years and had spent all her living upon physicians and could not be healed by anyone, came up behind him, and touched the fringe of his garment; and immediately her flow of blood ceased. And Jesus said, "Who was it that touched me?" When all denied it, Peter and those who were with him said, "Master, the multitudes surround you and press upon you!" But Jesus said, "Some one touched me; for I perceive that power has gone forth from me." And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed. And he said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace." While he was still speaking, a man from the ruler's house came and said, "Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the Teacher any more." But Jesus on hearing this answered him, "Do not fear; only believe, and she shall be well." And when he came to the house, he permitted no one to enter with him, except Peter and John and James, and the father and mother of the child. And all were weeping and bewailing her; but he said, "Do not weep; for she is not dead but sleeping." And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. But taking her by the hand he called, saying, "Child, arise." And her spirit returned, and she got up at once; and he directed that something should be given her to eat. And her parents were amazed; but he charged them to tell no one what had happened.

Economos Peter J. Thornberg, Proistamenos October 25, 2018 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: With the Fall Festival in our rear view mirror, we would like to thank all of the parishioners who gave of their time, talent and treasure in order for our festival to operate smoothly. Whether you helped for 20 minutes or 14 hours a day, every effort is greatly appreciated. A very special thank you to our festival Chairman, John Papadimitriou, for his continued and tireless dedication to our Parish. We would also like to thank our new Executive Chef, Stelios Fountas, who not only stepped up when we were in desperate need, but he did so out of love to serve our God and our Parish. We are truly blessed to have both of these fine gentlemen as members of the Saint Sophia family. As most of you know, we were faced with horrible weather all weekend. That resulted in a shortfall of over $8,000 under our budget. This is in addition to the nearly $16,000 budget shortfall from the Spring festival (also weather related), which was almost $22,000 less than last year. This is money we were counting on to continue to pay our bills. We rely on Festival revenue and your Stewardship financial contribution to pay for our major expenses (the mortgage, electric, water, gas, insurance, lawn service, exterminators, equipment repair services, etc.). In addition, we have an obligation to the bank that holds our mortgage to show income of 110% over our annual mortgage payments. As of the date of this letter, we have a net loss of over $18,000 year to date, which means we have a deficit of approximately $42,000 compared to what we need to show to the bank. This means we need to take in $42,000 more than we spend for the remaining two months of the year. If you have any questions about these numbers, please attend the November 4 th General Assembly for a full financial report. This is OUR parish and making up this deficit is dependent solely on OUR financial contributions. Unlike other denominations, we do not receive financial support from the Archdiocese or Metropolis. The bottom line is that we need your help. We are asking each Steward to make a one-time Stewardship donation of $200 or more to help bridge this financial gap. $200 is what many of us spend on a nice dinner out. $200 is the cost of a new dress or a cheap suit. $200 is the cost of a new purse or a new golf club. This works out to less than $4.00 a week (the cost of a latte at Starbucks).

We understand that some families have financial constraints; but most of us have been blessed tenfold with good health, good fortune and prosperity. For those blessed families, we are asking that you consider a minimal gift of $200 to help us bridge the gap for 2018. Note that this is the first time in decades that we have had a budget shortfall that caused us to make an appeal like this, and we do not make this lightly. God willing, and with your help, we will return to prosperity in the years to come. If you have any questions regarding this appeal, please feel free to contact any of our Parish Council members. As always, we are thankful for the generosity of our Parish Family. Yours in Christ, Rev. Economos Peter J. Thornberg, Proistamenos John Pogas Parish Council President
