Welcome to Saint Nicholas on this Sunday, February 24, 2019 Today we commemorate: Sunday of the Prodigal Son First & Second Finding of the Venerable Head of John the Baptist Romanos, Prince of Uglich Boswell, Abbot of Melrose Abbey EPISTLE READING St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 4:6-15 Prokeimenon. Grave Mode. Psalm 63.11,1 The righteous shall rejoice in the Lord. Verse: Oh God, hear my cry. The reading is from St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 4:6-15 Brethren, it is the God who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, to show that the transcendent power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus,
so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. For while we live we are always being given up to death for Jesus' sake, so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you. Since we have the same spirit of faith as he had who wrote, "I believed, and so I spoke," we too believe, and so we speak, knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into his presence. For it is all for your sake, so that as grace extends to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.
GOSPEL READING The Gospel According to Luke 15:11-32 The Lord said this parable: "There was a man who had two sons; and the younger of them said to his father, 'Father, give me the share of the property that falls to me.' And he divided his living between them. Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took his journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in loose living. And when he had spent everything, a great famine arose in that country, and he began to be in want. So he went and joined himself to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed swine. And he would gladly have filled his belly with the pods that the swine ate; and no one gave him anything. But when he came to himself he said, 'How many of my father's hired servants have bread enough and to spare, but I perish here with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me as one of your hired servants.' And he arose and came to his father. But while he was yet at a distance, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. And the son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.' But the father said to his servants, 'Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet; and bring the fatted calf and kill it, and let us eat and make merry; for this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.' And they began to make merry. Now his elder son was in the field; and as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. And he called one of the servants and asked what this meant. And he said to him, 'Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fatted calf, because he has received him safe and sound.' But he was angry and refused to go in. His father came out and entreated him, but he answered his father, 'Lo, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed your command; yet you never gave me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends. But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your living with harlots, you killed for him the fatted calf!' And he said to him, 'Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. It was fitting to make merry and be glad, for this your brother was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found.'"

What God Has Done In My Life By: Rosemary Georgiou In honor of St. Valentine s Day, I wanted to write about love. Not that I really know or understand man s (human) love, but God s love I know that I ve tasted His love. In 1Corinthians 13:13, it says, now abide (live in) faith, hope & love; but the greatest of these is love. We as Christians have learned that the first commandment is to love God with all our heart, and with all our soul, and with all our mind. This is the first and great commandment. The second is to love one another as we love ourselves. Love is the most valuable, prized possession there is. It s more precious than gold. Everyone wants to love and be loved. We need to have it, we need to give it. It cannot be bought or sold. It was the most precious gift that God gave to us. God gave us His Son because He loved us. God is Love. 1 John 4:7-8 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. The one who does not love does not know God, for God is Love. We are created in the image of God. Love is in our DNA, it is in our nature! That is why we seek it so persistently, so tenaciously! Because God is Love, the most important lesson He wants us to learn is how to love. Now the love we have for God, is different than the love we have for one another, or the romantic love we have for the opposite sex. I believe the Greeks did put it in the right perspective. They had Phileo love, Eros love and Agape love. The bible speaks of Phileo and Agape love. Phileo refers to brotherly love, having feelings of warmth and affection as for best friends. Agape love is the most powerful, noblest type of love. It is sacrificial, unconditional love. That is the kind of love Christ has for us, and that is the kind of love we should have for one another. Then there is Eros love, which refers to passionate or sexual love. Eros love is what many relationships are made of, and that s why they don t sustain the test of time. Sacrifice, forgiveness and understanding, repeatedly done, is what keeps relationships alive. No matter what type of relationship it is husband and wife, family, or friends, this act really describes and is Agape Love. Now that I have shared with you a few words on love, let me share a with you an experience I had in 2013. It was during the time of Lent. I was on my way to St. Nicholas Church to attend a Salutation service of the Virgin Mary. As I was driving, I came to a light intersection, and as I waited for the light to change, I pulled out my hand lotion, removed my two rings and rubbed the lotion on my hands. I put one ring on my right hand and then as I was going to put on my other ring on my left hand I said to myself and to God, I m pointing this ring with the pointed part, pointing out, because I want to bring love to me. I want love to come to me. I m tired of being alone. l want love to come to me. I had always worn this little inexpensive, marcasite heart ring pointing towards myself. I wore this ring often because I always said that it represented my heart. But this night, I had changed the direction in which it pointed, in hopes of it bringing me the love that I so longed for!
The church service was really very nice, even though there were only a handful of people. After it was over, I remember talking with Evan the chanter, for only a very short time before heading home. As I entered my garage, I began to remove my jewelry. I removed my ring on my right hand, but when I reached for the ring on my left it was gone! Immediately, I thought, where s my heart ring? I checked my pockets, my purse, I looked around the seats of the car the whole time knowing that I had never touched the ring after putting it back on. I finally went inside and upstairs to change. The next morning, I opened the garage door, thinking that now there would be more light. I would back the car out a bit and be able to have a more clear view. As I was persistently looking inside the car, all of a sudden, a quieting thought came to me. I have your heart Rosemary and you have my love. I just sat in my car and let out a soft laugh. Yes I wanted to bring love to me, and it was as though God was telling me that I had His love. It was as though He was saying love Me Rosemary, let Me take your heart and heal it. Let Me take care of your heart, and for me that was such a comforting thought. I never found that ring, but I know without a doubt that God is supernatural, and He took that ring that signified my heart. He has my heart and is my first love. It s been six years since this happened and a month ago something rather strange occurred. On my key ring, I have another heart. It s a small metal Brighton heart. It s nearly impossible for it to come off or be taken off the ring. I ve had it for about seven years and have never taken it off or has it come off. One afternoon I went upstairs and, in my bathroom, on the counter, was the heart from my key ring. It was only the heart, not the keys or the key ring only the heart laying there next to the sink, on the counter! I m not sure what the meaning of that is. But I do know that God grants us the desires of our heart. My desire is to share my life with someone special one day. God has filled my heart with much love for family, friends, and people that I run into daily. God has definitely taken very good care of my heart, because there s been various times when if left up to me my heart would have been filled with such despicable feelings towards those who did me such harm and hurt. Every day I thank God for His love and every day I ask God to watch over my heart. I encourage all of you to give your heart to Jesus Christ our Lord and God and see what He does with it! Love and Hugs to all and have a Blessed Valentine s Day!
