2:1-2, ὑπὲρ τῆς παρουσίας τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ Ἐρωτῶμεν δὲ ὑμᾶς, ἀδελφοί, 1 As to the coming of our ὑπὲρ τῆς παρουσίας τοῦ κυρίου Lord Jesus Christ and our ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ καὶ ἡμῶν being gathered together to ἐπισυναγωγῆς ἐπʼ αὐτὸν 2 εἰς him, we beg you, brothers τὸ μὴ ταχέως σαλευθῆναι ὑμᾶς and sisters, 2 not to be ἀπὸ τοῦ νοὸς μηδὲ θροεῖσθαι, quickly shaken in mind or μήτε διὰ πνεύματος μήτε διὰ alarmed, either by spirit or by λόγου μήτε διʼ ἐπιστολῆς ὡς διʼ word or by letter, as though ἡμῶν, ὡς ὅτι ἐνέστηκεν ἡ from us, to the effect that the ἡμέρα τοῦ κυρίου day of the Lord is already here Page 7 Notes here:
2:3-12, pt 1, vv 3-5 3 Μή τις ὑμᾶς ἐξαπατήσῃ κατὰ μηδένα τρόπον ὅτι ἐὰν μὴ ἔλθῃ ἡ ἀποστασία πρῶτον καὶ ἀποκαλυφθῇ ὁ ἄνθρωπος τῆς ἀνομίας, ὁ υἱὸς τῆς ἀπωλείας, 4 ὁ ἀντικείμενος καὶ ὑπεραιρόμενος ἐπὶ πάντα λεγόμενον θεὸν ἢ σέβασμα, ὥστε αὐτὸν εἰς τὸν ναὸν τοῦ θεοῦ καθίσαι ἀποδεικνύντα ἑαυτὸν ὅτι ἐστὶν θεός 5 Οὐ μνημονεύετε ὅτι ἔτι ὢν πρὸς ὑμᾶς ταῦτα ἔλεγον ὑμῖν; 3 Let no one deceive you in any way; for that day will not come unless the rebellion comes first and the lawless one is revealed, the one destined for destruction 4 He opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, declaring himself to be God 5 Do you not remember that I told you these things when I was still with you? Page 8 Notes here:
2:3-12, pt 2, vv 6-10 6 καὶ νῦν τὸ κατέχον οἴδατε εἰς τὸ ἀποκαλυφθῆναι αὐτὸν ἐν τῷ ἑαυτοῦ καιρῷ 7 τὸ γὰρ μυστήριον ἤδη ἐνεργεῖται τῆς ἀνομίας μόνον ὁ κατέχων ἄρτι ἕως ἐκ μέσου γένηται 8 καὶ τότε ἀποκαλυφθήσεται ὁ ἄνομος, ὃν ὁ κύριος [Ἰησοῦς] ἀνελεῖ τῷ πνεύματι τοῦ στόματος αὐτοῦ καὶ καταργήσει τῇ ἐπιφανείᾳ τῆς παρουσίας αὐτοῦ, 9 οὗ ἐστιν ἡ παρουσία κατʼ ἐνέργειαν τοῦ σατανᾶ ἐν πάσῃ δυνάμει καὶ σημείοις καὶ τέρασιν ψεύδους 10 καὶ ἐν πάσῃ ἀπάτῃ ἀδικίας τοῖς ἀπολλυμένοις, ἀνθʼ ὧν τὴν ἀγάπην τῆς ἀληθείας οὐκ ἐδέξαντο εἰς τὸ σωθῆναι αὐτούς 6 And you know what is now restraining him, so that he may be revealed when his time comes 7 For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work, but only until the one who now restrains it is removed 8 And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will destroy with the breath of his mouth, annihilating him by the manifestation of his coming 9 The coming of the lawless one is apparent in the working of Satan, who uses all power, signs, lying wonders, 10 and every kind of wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved Page 9 Notes here:
2:3-12, pt 3, vv 11-12 11 καὶ διὰ τοῦτο πέμπει αὐτοῖς ὁ θεὸς ἐνέργειαν πλάνης εἰς τὸ πιστεῦσαι αὐτοὺς τῷ ψεύδει, 12 ἵνα κριθῶσιν πάντες οἱ μὴ πιστεύσαντες τῇ ἀληθείᾳ ἀλλʼ εὐδοκήσαντες τῇ ἀδικίᾳ 11 For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion, leading them to believe what is false, 12 so that all who have not believed the truth but took pleasure in unrighteousness will be condemned Page 10 Notes here:
2:13-3:15 Anticipating the End, 1 2:13-14 13 Ἡμεῖς δὲ ὀφείλομεν εὐχαριστεῖν 13 But we must always give τῷ θεῷ πάντοτε περὶ ὑμῶν, thanks to God for you, brothers ἀδελφοὶ ἠγαπημένοι ὑπὸ κυρίου, and sisters beloved by the Lord, ὅτι εἵλατο ὑμᾶς ὁ θεὸς ἀπαρχὴν because God chose you as the εἰς σωτηρίαν ἐν ἁγιασμῷ first fruits for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and πνεύματος καὶ πίστει ἀληθείας, 14 through belief in the truth 14 For εἰς ὃ [καὶ] ἐκάλεσεν ὑμᾶς διὰ τοῦ this purpose he called you εὐαγγελίου ἡμῶν εἰς περιποίησιν through our proclamation of the δόξης τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ good news, so that you may Χριστοῦ obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ Page 11 Notes here:
2:13-3:15 Anticipating the End, 2 2:15-17 15 Ἄρα οὖν, ἀδελφοί, στήκετε καὶ κρατεῖτε τὰς παραδόσεις ἃς ἐδιδάχθητε εἴτε διὰ λόγου εἴτε διʼ ἐπιστολῆς ἡμῶν 16 Αὐτὸς δὲ ὁ κύριος ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦς Χριστὸς καὶ [ὁ] θεὸς ὁ πατὴρ ἡμῶν ὁ ἀγαπήσας ἡμᾶς καὶ δοὺς παράκλησιν αἰωνίαν καὶ ἐλπίδα ἀγαθὴν ἐν χάριτι, 17 παρακαλέσαι ὑμῶν τὰς καρδίας καὶ στηρίξαι ἐν παντὶ ἔργῳ καὶ λόγῳ ἀγαθῷ 15 So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by our letter 16 Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and through grace gave us eternal comfort and good hope, 17 comfort your hearts and strengthen them in every good work and word Page 12 Notes here:
2:13-3:15 Anticipating the End, 3 3:1-5 31 Τὸ λοιπὸν προσεύχεσθε, ἀδελφοί, περὶ ἡμῶν, ἵνα ὁ λόγος τοῦ κυρίου τρέχῃ καὶ δοξάζηται καθὼς καὶ πρὸς ὑμᾶς, 2 καὶ ἵνα ῥυσθῶμεν ἀπὸ τῶν ἀτόπων καὶ πονηρῶν ἀνθρώπων οὐ γὰρ πάντων ἡ πίστις 3 Πιστὸς δέ ἐστιν ὁ κύριος, ὃς στηρίξει ὑμᾶς καὶ φυλάξει ἀπὸ τοῦ πονηροῦ 4 πεποίθαμεν δὲ ἐν κυρίῳ ἐφʼ ὑμᾶς, ὅτι ἃ παραγγέλλομεν [καὶ] ποιεῖτε καὶ ποιήσετε 5 Ὁ δὲ κύριος κατευθύναι ὑμῶν τὰς καρδίας εἰς τὴν ἀγάπην τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ εἰς τὴν ὑπομονὴν τοῦ Χριστοῦ 31 Finally, brothers and sisters, pray for us, so that the word of the Lord may spread rapidly and be glorified everywhere, just as it is among you, 2 and that we may be rescued from wicked and evil people; for not all have faith 3 But the Lord is faithful; he will strengthen you and guard you from the evil one 4 And we have confidence in the Lord concerning you, that you are doing and will go on doing the things that we command 5 May the Lord direct your hearts to the love of God and to the steadfastness of Christ Page 13 Notes here:
2:13-3:15 Anticipating the End, 4 3:6-15, pt 1, vv 6-9 6 Παραγγέλλομεν δὲ ὑμῖν, ἀδελφοί, ἐν ὀνόματι τοῦ κυρίου [ἡμῶν] Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ στέλλεσθαι ὑμᾶς ἀπὸ παντὸς ἀδελφοῦ ἀτάκτως περιπατοῦντος καὶ μὴ κατὰ τὴν παράδοσιν ἣν παρελάβοσαν παρʼ ἡμῶν 7 Αὐτοὶ γὰρ οἴδατε πῶς δεῖ μιμεῖσθαι ἡμᾶς, ὅτι οὐκ ἠτακτήσαμεν ἐν ὑμῖν 8 οὐδὲ δωρεὰν ἄρτον ἐφάγομεν παρά τινος, ἀλλʼ ἐν κόπῳ καὶ μόχθῳ νυκτὸς καὶ ἡμέρας ἐργαζόμενοι πρὸς τὸ μὴ ἐπιβαρῆσαί τινα ὑμῶν 9 οὐχ ὅτι οὐκ ἔχομεν ἐξουσίαν, ἀλλʼ ἵνα ἑαυτοὺς τύπον δῶμεν ὑμῖν εἰς τὸ μιμεῖσθαι ἡμᾶς 6 Now we command you, beloved, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to keep away from believers who are living in idleness and not according to the tradition that they received from us 7 For you yourselves know how you ought to imitate us; we were not idle when we were with you, 8 and we did not eat anyone's bread without paying for it; but with toil and labor we worked night and day, so that we might not burden any of you 9 This was not because we do not have that right, but in order to give you an example to imitate Page 14 Notes here:
2:13-3:15 Anticipating the End, 4 3:6-15, pt 2, vv 10-13 10 καὶ γὰρ ὅτε ἦμεν πρὸς ὑμᾶς, τοῦτο παρηγγέλλομεν ὑμῖν, ὅτι εἴ τις οὐ θέλει ἐργάζεσθαι μηδὲ ἐσθιέτω 11 Ἀκούομεν γάρ τινας περιπατοῦντας ἐν ὑμῖν ἀτάκτως μηδὲν ἐργαζομένους ἀλλὰ περιεργαζομένους 12 τοῖς δὲ τοιούτοις παραγγέλλομεν καὶ παρακαλοῦμεν ἐν κυρίῳ Ἰησοῦ Χριστῷ, ἵνα μετὰ ἡσυχίας ἐργαζόμενοι τὸν ἑαυτῶν ἄρτον ἐσθίωσιν 13 Ὑμεῖς δέ, ἀδελφοί, μὴ ἐγκακήσητε καλοποιοῦντες 10 For even when we were with you, we gave you this command: Anyone unwilling to work should not eat 11 For we hear that some of you are living in idleness, mere busybodies, not doing any work 12 Now such persons we command and exhort in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living 13 Brothers and sisters, do not be weary in doing what is right Page 15 Notes here:
2:13-3:15 Anticipating the End, 4 3:6-15, pt 3, vv 14-15 14 Εἰ δέ τις οὐχ ὑπακούει τῷ λόγῳ 14 Take note of those who ἡμῶν διὰ τῆς ἐπιστολῆς, τοῦτον do not obey what we say in σημειοῦσθε μὴ συναναμίγνυσθαι this letter; have nothing to αὐτῷ, ἵνα ἐντραπῇ 15 καὶ μὴ ὡς do with them, so that they ἐχθρὸν ἡγεῖσθε, ἀλλὰ νουθετεῖτε may be ashamed 15 Do not ὡς ἀδελφόν 16 Αὐτὸς δὲ ὁ κύριος τῆς εἰρήνης δῴη ὑμῖν τὴν εἰρήνην regard them as enemies, but διὰ παντὸς ἐν παντὶ τρόπῳ ὁ warn them as believers κύριος μετὰ πάντων ὑμῶν Page 16 Notes here:

What can we learn from Paul's letters? 1 The second missionary journey of the apostle Paul (Acts 15:40 18:22) brought him and his associates first into the familiar territory of his home in Tarsus and then among the Galatian churches established on the first missionary journey 2 In order to understand the contents of Paul s letters, one must understand the circumstances in the churches to whom the letters are written 3 Additionally the contents of Paul s letters are intended to communicate his ideas to the typical believer in the various churches, not the educated elite among the early church 4 What can we learn from this three letters coming out of ministry in the early 50s? 5 Galatians: churches with serious problems from false teaching 6 First Thessalonians: a love letter to a dearly beloved church 7 Second Thessalonians: still helping them get the Lord's coming straight Page 18 Notes here:
