News FROM THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS The Year in Review The Board will host our parish s annual general meeting on Sunday, November 2nd. Look for news and announcements from the meeting in the next issue of the Herald. Time to Vote! The current Board of Directors is nearing the end of its two-year term. Elections for 2009 2011 will take place at the Community Centre on Sunday, November 30th, from 1 to 5 p.m. Nominations will be accepted from the floor at the annual general meeting on November 2nd. Nominations can also be made after that date. Details about the nomination and voting processes will be made available later this month. FROM PHILOPTOCHOS Glendi stin Plaka Thank you to the All Saints Dancers for performing and adding kefi to the evening. Thanks also to the many volunteers for their help cooking and making the Centre look like the Plaka. Don t forget the Bazaar! The Bazaar will take place on November 5th and 6th. We are taking food orders until the end of October. Don t miss out! Come and join us and bring your friends. Christmas Dinner Let s kick off the holiday season together. The food collected by the Sunday School before Thanksgiving was donated to the Metropolis s Social Services department. It was greatly needed and very much appreciated. Please remember that people struggle to feed themselves all year round, not just at Thanksgiving or Christmas. Nonperishable foods can be left in the bin in the church vestibule at any time. Greetings from Bristol! Irene Karageorgakis I love to travel because I love to experience different cultures. And the best part of travelling is the opportunity to visit an Orthodox church in a different part of the world. Currently, my teaching career has taken me to Bristol, England. I arrived in Bristol in mid-september and I immediately researched to find the location of the city s only Greek Orthodox church, the church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. The next week, I attended my first Sunday service. As luck would have it, the liturgy was being conducted by one of the Assistant Bishops of the Archdiocese of Thyateira and Great Britain, the Right Reverend Athanasios Bishop of Tropaeou. The morning service began at around 10:50 a.m. and continued until approximately 1:45 p.m. The Assistant Bishop delivered his sermon on the first Sunday of Luke about midway through the service. The Assistant Bishop spoke about the teachings from the day s Gospel reading, explaining how James and John, sons of Zebedee, and Simon were moved by our Lord Jesus Christ to leave their respective lives as fishermen behind and to follow Him, to help spread the word of God. The Bishop went on to explain the importance of doing our own part to spread the word of God to the people that we meet in our everyday lives. I left the church inspired and humbled to have been in the same space as the Right Reverend Athanasios Bishop of Tropaeou. Since then, I have continued to attend Sunday services at Saint Peter and Saint Paul and plan to do so until I leave Bristol at the end of December. As much as I am enjoying the experience of teaching in Bristol, I miss Toronto and I look forward to returning in January as a supply teacher for All Saints Sunday school! on the Clifton Suspension Bridge, overlooking the Avon Gorge 4
