THE SOURCE January 2016 Issue #1-16 HOLY TRINITY GREEK ORTHODOX CATHEDRAL CAMP HILL, PA Beloved Friends in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, I would like to extend my best wishes for this New Year to each one in our Community; Praying and wishing you all health and prosperity, happiness and progress, advancing in the faith and spiritual uplifting. As we enter in this New Year of 2016 we all make plans of what our vision is. Hopefully we are including in our plans to have the Lord guide, protect and bless us. Certainly we all want to build and not destroy; we all want to heal, not injure; we all want to move on and progress and not to regress. Why are we optimists and positive thinkers? First of all because we have been created in the image and likeness of God; the progress is in our DNA. God Himself hopes constantly for our betterment. Secondly, because we have been baptized Christians and we belong to the Church of Christ and Christ trusts us to be children of God. Thirdly, because we have love and we care for this our Community of Holy Trinity Cathedral in Camp Hill. At the same time we care and help with needs that exist close to us or far, like in Greece. Thus this Community of ours has good Christian people who love the Lord with all their heart. To be a Christian means that we have privileges/blessings to enjoy and duties to undertake. It is a privilege to be allowed by the Lord to enter into His Church, participate in the Services, enjoy a Sacramental life and partake of the Life that Christ is offering; It is a privilege to claim that our Lord loves me, loves you and He sacrifices till death for my and your well-being and salvation. It is a privilege to have a Community where we find brothers and sisters willing to help and support in trying times and in happy times. It is a privilege to come from and to have a Christian family. Privileges indeed, many privileges, many blessings. And duties. The most important duty is to allow our Lord to become our Savior. To repent and ask for forgiveness from the Lord and from each other for mistakes, sins and wrongdoings we commit. To talk to Him in prayer; to read the lives of our Saints and their teachings and ask for their intercessions to the Lord; to study His word in the Holy Scripture, concentrate and follow His Holy Will instead of the devil s will or the world s; to advance in virtues; to limit the passions. We have the duty to fight against the Devil and his traps. We have the duty to manifest Christ in our lives and allow Him to increase in the society through my and your Christian faithful presence. Specifically in our Community we have the special duty to be focused and offer help by caring for the common needs, for encouraging and comforting the hurting and injured, assisting in the different needs, healing wounds, comforting troubled hearts and avoiding criticism. A Good Captain proves himself in the sea storm goes an old proverb. We are all captains, responsible Christians, in our Community and we all are accountable in front of God in how we handle situations today and tomorrow. How sensitive we are and what our efforts are to calm the storm in our hearts and in our fellow parishioners hearts. We must strive to unite
THE SOURCE JANUARY 2016 Page 2 and not divide, and thus fulfilling Christ s expectation, hope and prayer. Holy Father keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one as we are (John 17:11). If we have in mind that Christ is our model and the way to walk and the leader in our life then we will experience a miracle that has started and will continue to increase in our Community. The miracle of a new beginning where the work of Christ will continue sanctifying, keeping us together, and a spiritual advancement to be attained. Moreover, enlarging His Kingdom and establishing the true witness of His people in today s society. Let us allow Christ to be in our midst; let us all work for the glorification of His Holy Name. Let us all be concerned and committed to improve spiritually. It is a New Year that the Lord blesses. The above thoughts propose new beginning. Καθώς εισερχόμαστε στό Νέο Ετος 2016 σχεδιάζομε, προσευχόμαστε καί ελπίζομε νά πραγματοποιηθεί μιά ευλογημένη αρχή. Βεβαίως όλοι μας θέλουμε νά κτίσωμε καί όχι νά γκρεμίσωμε. Ολοι μας θέλουμε νά επουλώσουμε καί όχι νά πληγώσουμε. Ολοι μας θέλουμε νά προχωρήσουμε καί νά προοδεύσουμε καί όχι νά οπισθοδρομήσωμε. Θέλουμε η Ενορία μας να γίνει και να είναι λιμάνι της Βασιλείας του Κυρίου, μαρτυρία ότι «ζεί Κύριος». Γιατί είμαστε αισιόδοξοι; Πρώτα-πρώτα επειδή ο Θεός μας δημιούργησε «κατ-εικόνα καί καθομοίωσίν»του. Ευρίσκεται στο είναι μας η πρόοδος. Καί ο Θεός ελπίζει, προσδοκά και ευλογεί τό καλύτερό μας. Δεύτερον, γιατί έχομε βαπτισθεί Χριστιανοί καί αποτελούμε μέρος τής Εκκλησίας τού Χριστού. Καί ο Χριστός μάς εμπιστεύεται ότι θά είμαστε στή ζωή μας αφοσιωμένα παιδιά τού Θεού. Τρίτον, γιατί αγαπούμε καί φροντίζομε γι αυτή μας τήν Κοινότητα τής Αγίας Τριάδος ενώ ταυτόχρονα φροντίζουμε και βοηθούμε και για ανάγκες που υπάρχουν αλλού, κοντά αλλά και μακρυά, όπως στην Ελλάδα. Ετσι μπορούμε να πούμε ότι αυτή η Κοινότητα τής Αγίας Τριάδος στό Κέμπ Χίλλ έχει καλούς Χριστιανούς πού αγαπούν τόν Θεό μέ όλη τους τήν καρδιά, ενδιαφέρονται και συμπαρίστανται στον συνάνθρωπό τους και θέλουν να προοδεύσουν.
THE SOURCE JANUARY 2016 Page 3 Τό νά είναι κανείς Χριστιανός σημαίνει ότι απολαμβάνει ευλογίες από τόν Θεό αλλά επίσης ότι έχει υποχρεώσεις. Είναι ευλογία νά μάς επιτρέπεται νά εισερχόμεθα στήν Εκκλησία Του νά συμμετέχωμε στίς ακολουθίες, νά υιοθετούμε Μυστηριακή ζωή, νά λαβαίνωμε τήν ζωή πού ο Χριστός προσφέρει. Είναι ευλογία νά έχομε κοινότητα όπου μπορούμε νά βρούμε φίλους/αδέλφια πού θέλουν νά σταθούν δίπλα μας στό πόνο καί στή χαρά μας. Είναι ευλογία που προερχόματε καί που έχουμε Χριστιανική Οικογένεια. Ευλογίες...πράγματι πολλές ευλογίες. Καί υποχρεώσεις. Η σπουδαιοτέρα υποχρέωσή μας είναι νά επιτρέπωμε στόν Κύριό μας νά είναι ο Σωτήρας μας. Νά μετανοούμε καί νά παρακαλούμε γιά συγχώρηση από λάθη, αμαρτίες καί παρεκτροπές μας από τόν Εύσπλαχνο Κύριο καί μεταξύ μας. Νά Του ομιλούμε μέ τήν προσευχή μας. Νά μελετούμε τόν Λόγον Του, τήν Αγία Γραφή. Νά μελετούμε τήν ζωήν τών αγίων, τίς διδασκαλίες τους καί νά τούς παρακαλούμε νά μεσιτεύουν γιά μάς στόν Κύριο. Νά είμαστε συγκεντρωμένοι καί να ακολουθούμε τό Αγιόν Του θέλημα αντί νά ακολουθούμε τό θέλημα τού διαβόλου ή το θέλημα τού κόσμου. Νά αποκτούμε αρετές. Νά περιορίζωμε τά πάθη μας. Εχομε τήν υποχρέωση νά φαίνεται ο Χριστός στή ζωή μας καί νά Τού επιτρέπωμε νά αυξάνει στήν Κοινωνία μας μέ τήν δική μας σωστή Χριστιανική παρουσία. Ιδιαιτέρως στήν Κοινότητά μας έχομε τήν ειδική υποχρέωση νά είμαστε περισσότερο έτοιμοι νά προσφέρωμε τήν βοήθειά μας φροντίζοντας για τα κοινά, παρηγορώντας πονεμένους, προσφέροντας στις ανάγκες, επουλώνοντας πληγές, ενισχύοντας ταραγμένες καρδιές, αποφεύγοντας τήν κατάκρισι. Ο σοφός λαός μας λέγει ότι «ο Καπετάνιος στή φουρτούνα φαίνεται». Ολοι μας είμαστε υπεύθυνοι καί δοσίλογοι ενώπιον τού Θεού γιά τό πώς αντιμετωπίζομε καταστάσεις σήμερα καί αύριο. Ετσι εκπληρώνομε τήν προσδοκία καί προσευχή τού Κυρίου μας «Πάτερ άγιε, τήρησον εν τώ ονόματί Σου ους δέδωκάς μοι ίνα ώσιν έν καθώς ημείς» (Ιωάν. 17:11). Αν έχωμε στό νού μας ότι ο Ιησούς Χριστός είναι τό Φωτεινό Παράδειγμα καί η Οδός καί ο Αρχηγός τής ζωής μας τότε θά βλέπουμε ένα θαύμα που άρχισε και θα δυναμώνει να πραγματοποιείται στήν Κοινότητά μας. Τό θαύμα μιάς νέας αρχής σύμφωνα μέ τό οποίο το έργον τού Χριστού θά συνεχίζει νά αγιάζει, να αδελφοποιεί, καί νά ενώνει τούς Χριστιανούς τής Κοινότητός μας, ώστε νά εξαπλώνεται η Βασιλεία Του και νά στερεώνεται η αληθινή μαρτυρία τών ανθρώπων Του στήν κοινωνίας μας. Ας επιτρέψωμε στόν Χριστό νά είναι ανάμεσά μας. Ας εργασθούμε όλοι διά τήν δόξαν τού Αγίου Ονόματός Του. Ας ενδιαφερθούμε νά επιδιώξουμε τήν πνευματικήν μας πρόοδο και καλυτέρευση. Βρισκόμαστε στήν αρχή τού Νέου Ετους. Αυτά πού αναφέραμε πιό πάνω είναι μιά ευλογημένη πραγματικότητα. Προσεύχομαι ο Θεός νά μάς ευλογήση, νά εργασθούμε καί νά εκπληρώσουμε τούτο τό όραμα. Αμήν. The proper protocol is that the clergy bless the food and drink before the parish begins partaking. In order to show proper honor to the hierarchs and clergy, they and their families should always be served first. Next to be served are those parishioners who are celebrating a special occasion or for whom a special meal has been prepared. Be eager to welcome newcomers to your table because this shows hospitality to strangers and will help visitors to feel welcome and comfortable to return to your parish. This is an important time to teach our children the necessity of manners and God-pleasing honor.
THE SOURCE JANUARY 2016 Page 6 ************************************************************ The above thank you note was sent to us by our Metropolitan since our Community presented to his Eminence with a gift on his nameday on December 5 th. Fr. Michael visited and handed the gift to the Metropolitan for his nameday and extended the love and good wishes of our Parish Council and our entire Holy Trinity Cathedral Community. The gift was a Computer Padfolio that he can use on his many trips. It was a personalized laptop bag that holds a computer and more. Fr. Michael also mentioned to our Metropolitan that he would never lose this gift. The inscription on the bag had his name and also had the name of our Community and date. When he opened the box with the gift, he was pleasantly surprised and thrilled at receiving such a nice gift.
THE SOURCE JANUARY 2016 Page 7 A NOTE FROM THE PARISH COUNCIL Dear Parishioners - Happy New Year!!! In early December, we had a General Assembly Meeting. It was well attended. Thank you for participating in the life of our Church! After many months of deliberation and research, we approved the project to beautify our Cathedral by installing marble on the Solea and in the Altar. I offer my sincere thanks to Fr. Michael, Nick Theofanis and his committee for their work on this project. You can help with this project that will forever beautify our Cathedral. Please see Nick Theofanis if you are willing to offer a financial donation to go towards the cost of this project. Specific sponsorship opportunities will be made available. Anonymous donations will also be gladly accepted. We also approved our 2016 Budget. I d like to thank Bob Moeller and his Financial Committee for their work. They have carefully looked at all of our costs, ensuring we can support our ministries while also running as efficiently as we possibly can. Financial Stewardship for 2016 is planned at $300,000, our highest amount ever, while we are still showing a small financial deficit overall. Please support our Cathedral through your generous stewardship today. In December, Philoptochos held a good will luncheon to benefit the needy in Greece whose lives have been impacted by the financial crisis. It was an amazing event! The social hall was nearly full and we had to add extra tables for all of those who stayed. We raised several THOUSAND dollars for the needy. On that same day, the Church was so full that the children who gathered to hear Fr. Michael s sermon had to sit on the floor because there was not enough room for them all With your love, participation and involvement, THIS is what our Cathedral can be. Come and See! There is something special starting to happen. On a final note, I remind you to get involved in our Festival preparations. Activities are underway. THE SOURCE JANUARY 2016 Page 8 A NOTE FROM THE BOARD OF ELECTIONS Dear Parishioners: The Board of Elections on Sunday, November 22, 2015, conducted the election of five members of the Parish Council in accordance with the Uniform Parish Regulations of the Archdiocese and our Parish Bylaws. A total of 125 parishioners in good standing voted, and 124 ballots were found to be valid. There were seven candidates for election, and they are all to be complimented for offering their services to our church community. The five individuals newly elected to the Parish Council are Nick Theofanis, John Papoutsis, Nicholas C. Mallios, Helen Tzanis, and Konstantine Pappas. They will fill five vacancies that have three-year terms from January 1, 2016, to December 31, 2018. Thank you and greatest of gratitude to ALL THE SUNDAY SCHOOL STAFF who guided the Christmas Program. Thank you to all the children/families who participated in the IOCC Health Kit Program. Sunday, December 13 th a group of our Sunday School youth provided a Christmas Meal/Party for the 79 residents of the Safe Harbor Shelter. A generous parishioner prepared and donated a Christmas meal which the youth set up and served at the Safe Harbor Shelter. Generous donors provided the money to purchase gifts for each of the 39 children at the shelter. The gifts were wrapped by our youth and Santa Claus presented each child with a gift. We are very proud and thankful of the youth that volunteered their time and assumed the responsibility of providing for those less fortunate. God Bless all who participated and provided. GREEK SCHOOL On January 27th at regular School time the Greek school will celebrate the Three Hierarchs day (Letters Day). PARISH MINISTRIES PHILOPTOCHOS Important Dates Mark your calendars! *January 19 th, Tuesday-Pot Luck Luncheon/Meeting for Philoptochos at 12:00pm (time has changed from 1:00p.m. to 12:00p.m.). *January 10 th, Sunday, after the Divine Liturgy in Social Hall- VASILOPITA CELEBRATION for the Community The tradition of cutting the Vasilopita adds joy to the celebration of the New Year, which everyone hopes will bring joy to all. We pray you will join us for this celebration and meal in fellowship. The Celebration of Cutting the Vasilopita (bread of Basil) will be conducted before the meal. You my present a donation for the Vasilopita and meal for the Philoptochos initiative/responsibility of caring and supporting Saint Basil Academy which provides a home for orphans, children of chronically ill or destitute parents or children from broken homes. No ticket is needed. A table will be set-up in the Social Hall to sign up, so that, we may have a count in order to prepare enough meals. December Lenten Luncheon-National Philoptochos aide to Greece Initiative We appreciate the generosity of the Harbilas family for donating the provisions for the meal. We thank all those who generously donated money and/or time to prepare for this project. $4,115 was collected and sent to National Philoptochos Aide to Greece Program (Children/family centers). 3.IOCC Health Kits will be reported in the February Source since the cut off date for donating Health Kits is the end of December. JOACHIM AND ANNA A special thank you to our President Christ and Ricky Zervanos, of the Sts. Joachim and Anna Society who organized beautifully the Senior Citizens Christmas Luncheon for all the Metropolis of Pittsburgh Churches in our District on Tuesday, December 8 th. We almost had around 200 people join us from various communities. We also would like to thank all those who labored in preparing the tables, decorations, the lovely favors, cooking, serving and making this annual gathering so joyful. It was a great blessing for us to host this event this year for our District. A special thank you with much gratitude to Verna Kounas who organized the entertainment for

It consisted of singing beautiful Christmas songs and playing of the different instruments. It was beautiful to hear them altogether and we thank them for taking of their time for practices and giving us such a beautiful and heart-warming performance. Everyone left feeling the Christmas atmosphere of joy and happiness in this annual Christmas gathering. There will be no monthly meeting in January. Our next meeting will be on the first Tuesday of February. CHURCH LENDING LIBRARY The church library contains information about Orthodoxy and Greece for you and your children. If you would like to borrow a book, sign the blue notebook, fill in name, date and name of book and when you return it, be sure to list the date you are returning it by your original sign in. Also, some of the books haven't been returned to our library; please check your books and return Holy Trinity's books for the use of your fellow parishioners. Thank you. ST. ELIZABETH S WOMAN S STUDY GROUP The St. Elizabeth s Woman s Study Group books will be Diamonds on the Bosporus and The Purple Mantle. Both of these historical novels tell the powerful stories of the faith and heroism of Ancient Christians. These books are available through Ancient Faith Publishing (store.ancientfaith.com). Our group meets the 2 nd and 4 th Wednesdays of each month in the Church Library from 5:30 to 7:00pm. Light refreshments are served. All ladies of our community are welcome. Both the Merit Scholarships and the General Scholarships will be awarded to qualified recipients. Merit recipients will receive a minimum $1,500.00 and General Scholarship recipients will receive a minimum of $500. Please note that the scholarship is renewable four times, and does not have to be in consecutive years. Requirements are: 1.) That you, your parents, or your grandparents are either a steward or stewards of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Camp Hill, Pa; or you are a child of an Ahepan Brother who is listed in good standing of the AHEPA Chapter #64. 2.) That you are a high school senior about to graduate and apply for acceptance to an accredited institution of higher learning; a student continuing his or her education in an institution of higher learning; or an applicant who is applying to a trade school/vocational school or continuing in such an institution. 3.) That you COMPLETE and submit the AHEPA Scholarship application, BY THE DUE DATE! 4.) That you submit an official transcript from your high school or institution of higher education. If applying for a General Scholarship you must have a 2.5 GPA. Merit scholars in High School must have a 3.25 GPA. College students applying for Merit Scholarships must have a 3.5 GPA. The project is progressing, but there are a number of families who have not turned in the information for their pages. The pages are completed for those who have given us text and/or photos. Once we have all the necessary information and can complete those missing pages, we will send out invoices to those who still owe for their pages. Presently, almost 50% of our Church s annual budget income comes from the Festival. The need is clear. Με το νηστησιμο γευμα και την την δωρεα της οικογενειας Χαρμπιλα για την προετοιμασια του γευματος συγκεντρωσαμε 4,115 δολαρια που η Εθνικη Φιλοπτωχος τα εστειλε στην Ελλαδα (Οικογενειακα και Παιδικα Κεντρα). Τα πακετα Υγιεινης θα συγκεντρωνονται κατα την διαρκεια του Δεκεμβριου. Στα μελη της Φιλοπτωχου και στην Κοινοτητα της Αγιας Τριαδας ευχομαστε Καλη Χρονια! ΣΥΛΛΟΓΟΣ ΙΩΑΚΕΙΜ ΚΑΙ ΑΝΝΑ Ευχαριστουμε τον Προεδρο του συλλογου Χρηστο Ζερβανο και την συζυγο του Χαρικλεια για την διοργανωση του Χριστουγεννιατικου Γευματος για τους ηλικιωμενους απο τις γειτονικες κοινοτητες, παραβρεθηκαν 200 ατομα.ευχαριστουμε την Κα Βερνα Κουνα για την διοργανωση του μουσικου προγραμματος παιζοντας πιανο,η Δεσποινα Φουτρη τραγουδι, Κων/να Κοκου φλογερα και ο Μαικ Ρουγγας Μαντολινο. Η επομενη συγκεντρωση του συλλογου θα γινει το Φεβρουαριο. ΒΙΒΒΛΙΟΘΗΚΗ ΤΗΣ ΕΚΚΛΗΣΙΑΣ Η βιβλιοθηκη της εκκλησιας μας περιεχει πολλα βιβλια σχετικα με την Ορθοδοξια και την Ελλαδα.
