FORTHCOMING EVENTS HALF YEARLY EXAMINATIONS Years ten and eleven will be sitting for their half yearly examinations on Monday, 1 June till Friday, 5 June 2009 Year nine will sit for their half yearly examinations from Monday, 15 June till Friday, 19 June. We wish all students good luck! QUEEN S BIRTHDAY Monday, 8 June is the Queen s birthday and a public holiday. There will be no school on this day. SCHOOL PHOTOS The High School student photos will take place on Thursday, 11 June and Friday, 12 June. All students are expected to be well groomed and wearing their winter school uniform. Girls must have their hair tied back and boys are expected to be clean shaven. Every student must be wearing a blazer. IMMUNISATION Immunisation will take place on Wednesday, 24 June as follows: Year 7 Girls: HPV second dose Year 7 Boys and Girls: Varicella(Chickenpox) Year10: Diptheria Tetanus Pertussis CHURCH ATTENDANCE Sunday, 28 June at 9.30: Years 10-12 WORK EXPERIENCE An integral part of the year ten curriculum is Work Experience. This valuable scheme affords students the opportunity to experience first hand a career that interests them and assists them in making an accurate decision for their future vocation. Many students return every year and enthusiastically confirm that they eagerly anticipate becoming a preschool teacher, a journalist or engineer. Also, others return and proclaim that the career they had aspired to was not to their liking or expectations and thus choose another career option. We hope year ten gains valuable knowledge and insights into their future career when they attend their work experience placements between Monday, 29 June and Friday, 3 July. END OF TERM TWO Term two ends on Friday, 3 July with church service scheduled for Thursday, 2 July. Students will be able to receive Holy Communion and are advised to prepare for it. School resumes on Tuesday, 28 July, following week two of the timetable cycle. We wish all students a safe and happy holiday! ATHLETICS CARNIVAL The School Athletics Carnival will take place on Thursday, 30 July. Keep fit on the holidays and good luck to all the competitors.

BATTLE OF CRETE COMMEMORATION On Saturday, 16 May, Year 7 students from the College choir, along with their teacher, Nr Navarro, attended the 68 th Battle of Crete Commemoration at Martin Place. The following students are to be commended for giving up their weekend to represent the School: Zacharoula Diakou, Germaine Kanellos, Lydia Conti, Maria Papantoniuo, Stefano Karafyllas, Niki Giannaros, Penny Belavgenis, Kallie Agathocleous, Jordan Aleche, Francine Christophorou, Samira and Shanice Elchami, Maree Psomas, Felicia Janes and Katerina and Vivien Xanthoudakis. Furthermore, on Monday, 18 May, Commander Leonidas Tsiantoulas and Lieutenant General Konstandinos Kalamatas and other distinguished guests, visited the School at a formal assembly. Students, Dimitri Giannopoulos and Dimitri Hursalas of the Student Representative Council presented a PowerPoint and speech explaining the significance of the Battle, for Australians and Greeks alike. This was followed by questions several Modern Greek students asked, whose proficiency in the Greek language impressed the guests. National pride was evident as the whole School sang both the Australian and Greek national anthems.

SPORTS REPORT SWISSA BASKETBALL Congratulations to our Senior Boys and Girls for winning the 2009 Swissa Basketball Championships. Savvas Kareklas and Nicole Kladakis were announced as Best and Fairest on the day in their divisions. A special mention needs to go out to the following students who have competed in the SWISSA Basketball competition since 2006 and remained undefeated over four seasons, winning four consecutive championships; Elena Sklavenitis, Vicky Pupulas, Carly Puplas, Nicole Kladakis and Lena Bosganas.

ST EUPHEMIA CROSS COUNTRY CARNIVAL 2009 It was pleasing to see such a high number of students turn out to the annual High School Cross Country Carnival. The carnival was held at Lake Gillawarna under clear conditions. On the day, students raised a total of $1000 towards the Victorian Bushfire Relief and held a barbeque to raise funds for the National Orthodox Tour. Congratulations to all students that competed on the day and thank you to all the staff that assisted. 2009 GREEK ORTHODOX ARCHDIOCESE OF AUSTRALIA NATIONAL SCHOOLS EVENT The annual Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia National Schools Event was held by St George Orthodox College in Adelaide from 5 to 8 May. Forty of our most elite athletes and public speakers had the opportunity to participate in the following events; Basketball, outdoor Soccer, indoor Soccer, Netball, Table Tennis and Volleyball. The students showed great sportsmanship in all areas with the Basketball boys successfully managing to bring home the title. On behalf of the students, we would like to thank all the teachers who sacrificed their time and classes to support and organise this event. We would like to commend the students, not only for their efforts, but on their outstanding representation of our school. We look forward to hosting the annual event next year here at St Euphemia College in 2010.

On Thursday evening, we went to St George s school hall for a social night with all the other Orthodox schools. All the schools Principals were present. The food was presented well and tasted magnificently. Representatives from the schools presented a play, a song or even poetry in Greek to promote our Greek heritage and language. Joel Poulos presented a speech about well known Greek sayings explaining how they can guide young people in their lives. Following this, Eve Kordas and Lisa Papos read out and analysed a Greek poem by Cavafy. At the end, St George students started Greek dancing and then encouraged the crowd, including teachers, to get up and dance together. The students enjoyed the night, Greek dancing and spending time getting to know other students from the Orthodox Colleges. By Joseph Gouvatsos and Theodore Mavridis

SWISSA FUTSAL GALA DAY St Euphemia College was represented by a combination of students from years 7-12 at the Futsal Gala Day on Monday, 30 th March. On the day, a series of twenty minute matches were played. The Girls team won all their matches beating most teams convincingly. In the final, we faced All Saints Grammar. After the full time whistle, the score was still level, 0-0. Both teams proved to be great defensively. It was decided a penalty shootout was to decide the game. After all the players from both teams shot a goal, the score was still 0-0. It therefore came down to one goal to secure the win and the title. Unfortunately, St Euphemia College lost the match to All Saints Grammar. Emma Vukovic played excellently as goal keeper for the first time and handled the extreme pressure very well. In addition, the year 12 girls, Terri Konomos, Jana Gribilas and Demetra Christodoulides must be mentioned for their skills on the field and their leadership. SCHOLASTIC SUCCESS St Euphemia College student, Penelope Aligiannis who completed the Higher School Certificate in 2003, recently graduated from the University of Newcastle, having completed a Bachelor of Medicine Degree. Doctor Penelope Aligiannis visited the School recently, to see the Principal, Mr Hirakis and all her teachers, acknowledging the excellent academic opportunities and support the School provided for the six years she attended the High School. On a tour of the School, she spoke to a class of Year 12 students, encouraging them to make the most of their final year and to strive for excellence as she herself did five years earlier. Doctor Aligiannis is currently completing a Bachelor of Medicine (Honours), at Saint George Public Hospital, Kogarah. On completion of her Honours Degree, she plans to undertake specialist training in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care. The School congratulates Dr Aligiannis and wishes her further success in her future endeavours.

2009 CULTURAL TOUR OF ROME, GREECE AND CYPRUS The cultural tour of Rome, Greece and Cyprus will be conducted this year for Years 10 and 11 students. Departing on Sunday, 28 June and returning on Wednesday, 29 July, Ms Papastamatis and Mr Vardouniotis will accompany the 14 students on the trip. For the first time, Rome and the volcanic areas of Pompeii and Herculaneum have been included in the itinerary. Other places that students will visit are: Athens, Epidaurus, Mycenae, Olympia, Delphi, Kalambaka and Cyprus, before spending nine days with their relatives. We would like to thank the Cypriot Government for hosting our students and covering the cost of accommodation and tours. We trust all students will thoroughly enjoy their trip overseas.

Ευχαριςτοφμε όλουσ τουσ μακθτζσ και τισ μακιτριεσ που ζλαβαν μζροσ ςε αυτι τθν εκδιλωςθ. Επιπλζον, τθ Δευτζρα 18 Μαΐου, ο Διοικθτισ κ. Λεωνίδασ Σςιατοφλασ και ο Γενικόσ Λοχίασ κ. Κωνςταντίνοσ Καλαμάτασ και άλλοι επίςθμοι επιςκεφτθκαν το ςχολείο μασ. Οι μακθτζσ Δθμιτριοσ Γιαννόπουλοσ και Δθμιτριοσ Χουρςάλασ από το Μακθτικό υμβοφλιο παρουςίαςαν ςε θλεκτρονικι μορφι PowerPoint Presentation ςτιγμζσ τθσ μάχθσ τθσ Κριτθσ και εξιγθςαν τθν ςθμαςία τθσ για τουσ Ζλλθνεσ και τουσ Αυςτραλοφσ. Ακολοφκθςαν αρκετζσ ερωτιςεισ ςτα Ελλθνικά από διάφορουσ μακθτζσ που εντυπωςίαςαν τουσ επιςκζπτεσ μασ με τθ εκφραςτικότθτά τουσ ςτα Ελλθνικά. Η εκνικι υπερθφάνεια ιταν ζκδθλθ όταν τραγουδικθκαν οι εκνικοί φμνοι τθσ Αυςτραλίασ και τθσ Ελλάδασ. ΕΣΗΙΟΙ ΑΓΩΝΕ ΑΝΩΜΑΛΟΤ ΕΔΑΦΟΤ (CROSS COUNTRY) Ήταν ευχάριςτθ θ υψθλι ςυμμετοχι των μακθτϊν ςτον Ετιςιο Αγϊνα Ανωμάλου Δρόμου του Γυμναςίου τθσ Αγίασ Ευφθμίασ. Οι αγϊνεσ διεξιχκθςαν ςτθ λίμνθ Gillawarna. Αυτι τθν θμζρα, οι μακθτζσ ςυγκζντρωςαν το ποςό των 1,000 δολλαρίων, τα οποία δόκθκαν ςτουσ Πυρόπλθκτουσ τθσ Βικτϊριασ. Επίςθσ, οι μακθτζσ διοργάνωςαν barbeque για τθν οικονομικι υποςτιριξθ του National Orthodox Tour. υγχαρθτιρια ςε όλουσ τουσ μακθτζσ, τισ μακιτριεσ και το προςωπικό που ςυμμετείχε ςε αυτιν τθν εκδιλωςθ. SWISSA RADEEMER BAPTIST SCHOOL υγχαρθτιρια ςτουσ μακθτζσ που αντιπροςϊπευςαν το Γυμνάςιο τθσ Αγίασ Ευφθμίασ ςτουσ Αγϊνεσ Ανωμάλου Εδάφουσ, SWISSA, οι οποίοι διεξιχκθςαν ςτισ 4 Μαΐου ςτο Radeemer Baptist School. ΑΚΑΔΗΜΑΪΚΕ ΕΠΙΣΤΧΙΕ Η μακιτρια, Πθνελόπθ Αλθγιάννθ, θ οποία απεφοίτθςε από το Γυμνάςιο του Κολλεγίου μασ το 2003 απεφοίτθςε πρόςφατα και πιρε το πτυχίο τθσ Ιατρικισ από το Πανεπιςτθμίου του Νιοφκαςτλ. Η ιατρόσ Πθνελόπθ Αλθγιάννθ επιςκζφτθκε το ςχολείο μασ πρόςφατα, να δει τον διευκυντι, κ. Χειράκθ και τουσ κακθγθτζσ και τισ κακθγιτριζσ τθσ, αναγνωρίηοντασ τισ εξαιρετικζσ ακαδθμαϊκζσ ευκαιρίεσ κακϊσ και τθν υποςτιριξι που τθσ πρόςφερε το Κολλζγιο μασ κατά τθν διάρκεια των Γυμναςιακϊν τθσ ςπουδϊν. Κατά τθν περιοδεία τθσ ςτο Κολλζγιο μίλθςε ςτουσ μακθτζσ τθσ Γϋ Λυκείου και τουσ ενκάρρυνε να εντφνουν τισ προςπάκειζσ τουσ ςε αυτόν τον τελευταίο χρόνο των ςπουδϊν τουσ. Η ιατρόσ Αλθγιάννθ ςυνεχίηει τισ μεταπτυχιακζσ ςπουδζσ τθσ ςτο Νοςοκομείου του St. George Public, Kogarah. Σο Κολλζγιο τθσ Αγίασ Ευφθμίασ ςυγχαίρει τθν ιατρό Αλθγιάννθ και τθσ εφχεται καλι ςταδιοδρομία.

2009 ΣΑΞΙΔΙ ΣΗ ΡΩΜΗ, ΕΛΛΑΔΑ ΚΑΙ ΚΤΠΡΟ Σο εκπαιδευτικό πολιτιςτικό ταξίδι ςτθ Ρϊμθ, Ελλάδα και Κφπρο ζχει οργανωκεί για τουσ μακθτζσ και μακιτριεσ τθσ Αϋ - Βϋ Λυκείου. Σα 14 παιδιά ςυνοδευόμενα από δφο κακθγθτζσ, τθν Κα Παπαςταμάτθ και τον Κο Βαρδουνιϊτθ κα αναχωριςουν τθν Κυριακι 28 Ιουνίου και κα επιςτρζψουν τθν Σετάρτθ 29 Ιουλίου. Οι μακθτζσ κα επιςκεφτοφν για πρϊτθ φορά τθ Ρϊμθ και τθν Πομπθία. Επίςθσ κα επιςκεφτοφν άλλα διάφορα αρχαία αξιοκζατα, π.χ. τθν Ολυμπία, τουσ Δελφοφσ, τα Μετζωρα. Σελειϊνοντασ, κα κζλαμε να ευχαριςτιςουμε το Τπουργείο Εξωτερικϊν τθσ Κφπρου που δζχτθκε να φιλοξενιςει τα παιδιά κατά τθ διάρκεια τθσ εξαιμερθσ διαμονισ τουσ ςτθν Κφπρο.
