And they put the sick man before Christ, saying nothing, but committing the whole to Him. For though in the beginning He Himself went about, and did not require so much faith of them that came unto Him; yet in this case they both approached Him, and had faith required on their part. For, "Seeing," it is said, "their faith;" that is, the faith of them that had let the man down. St. John Chrysostom Homily 29 on Matthew 9, 1. during the Great Fast. Sunday of St. John of the Ladder The memory of this Saint is celebrated on March 30, where his biography may be found. He is celebrated today because his book, The Ladder of Divine Ascent, is a sure guide to the ascetic life, written by a great man of prayer experienced in all forms of the monastic polity; it teaches the seeker after salvation how to lay a sound foundation for his struggles, how to detect and war against each of the passions, how to avoid the snares laid by the demons, and how to rise from the rudimental virtues to the heights of Godlike love and humility. It is held in such high esteem that it is universally read in its entirety in monasteries

Hymns of the Day After the Small Entrance Resurrectional Apolytikion 4 th Tone When the women disciples of the Lord learned from the angel the message of the resurrection and having cast from them their ancestral condemnation, they proudly proclaimed the news to the Apostles: Death has been vanquished; for Christ, our God, has risen from the dead and granted to the world His great mercy. Apolytikion for Sun. of St. John Climacus Plagal of the 4 th Tone With the streams of thy tears, thou didst cultivate the barrenness of the desert; and by thy sighings from the depths, thou didst bear fruit a hundredfold in labours; and thou becamest a luminary, shining with miracles upon the world, O John our righteous Father. Intercede with Christ God that our souls be saved. Apolytikion for the Church 1 st Tone Your proclamation went forth into all the earth, for it accepted your word, through which you taught the dogmas befitting God, you expounded on the nature of all that is, and you arranged the morals of society. THE EPISTLE / Ο ΑΠΟΣΤΟΛΟΣ Προκείμενον. Prokeimenon. Mode 4. Psalm 103.24,1 O Lord, how manifold are your works. You have made all things in wisdom Verse: Bless the Lord, O my soul. The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 6:13-20 BRETHREN, when God made a promise to Abraham, since he had no one greater by whom to swear, he swore to himself, saying, "Surely I will bless you and multiply you." And thus Abraham, having patiently endured, obtained the promise. Men indeed swear by a greater than themselves, and in all their disputes an oath is final for confirmation. So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he interposed with an oath, so that through two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible that God should prove false, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to seize the hope set before us. We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner shrine behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.

The Gospel According to Mark 9:17-31 At that time, a man came to Jesus kneeling and saying: "Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a dumb spirit; and wherever it seizes him it dashes him down; and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid; and I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able." And he answered them, "O faithless generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me." And they brought the boy to him; and when the spirit saw him, immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. And Jesus asked his father, "How long has he had this?" And he said, "From childhood. And it has often cast him into the fire and into the water, to destroy him; but if you can do anything, have pity on us and help us." And Jesus said to him, "If you can! All things are possible to him who believes." Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, "I believe; help my unbelief!" And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, "You dumb and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him, and never enter him again." And after crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out, and the boy was like a corpse; so that most of them said, "He is dead." But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. And when he had entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, "Why could we not cast it out?" And he said to them, "This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer and fasting." They went on from there and passed through Galilee. And he would not have any one know it; for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, "The Son of man will be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him; and when he is killed, after three days he will rise."

Books for Prisoners - Many inmates with whom we correspond through the prison ministry request books to read. Topics include self-help, vocational training, orthodoxy, history, and fiction. If you can make a small donation to defray the cost of purchasing and sending books, please see Vicky in the church office. Any size donation is appreciated. Parish News and Events Feed My Starving Children - Thank you to the more than 50 parishioners and friends - including many of our children - who participated in our 5th annual Feed My Starving Children meal packing event on Saturday, 3/23. Each volunteer packed about 216 meals - enough to feed one child for six months. These meals were sent to Haiti, one of the more than 70 countries FMSC serves, to be used in orphanages, hospitals, schools and clinics. You helped these children have a chance to play, go to school and dare to dream of a future. We hope to see you at next year's event to save even more children from the pain of slowly starving to death. Glory be to God! Feed the Hungry Ladies Philoptochos invites you to join us to serve a hot lunch to about 100 men and women, most of whom are homeless. It will be the only meal of the day for many of them. Your help is needed and appreciated at this annual event. Please use the sign-up sheet in Philoptochos Hall. See any Philoptochos member at today s coffee hour or stop by the office if you have questions. Date: Tuesday, April 9; Time: 10:00 am to 1:00 pm; Place: Annunciation Cathedral (where we meet) 1017 N. LaSalle, Chicago. Clothing Donations We always bring clothes for our guests and request donations of new or gently used clothes appropriate for homeless men and women - coats, knit tops, sweaters, jeans, hats, gloves, scarves. Please bring them to the Church no later than Sunday, April 7. Food Drive - Many of Chicago s Lakeview Pantry s clients have no way to store fresh produce. Some are homeless. Others sleep on a couch by a friend or family member without access to a refrigerator. The pantry requests donations of canned fruit. Packed in water or lite syrup is preferred as a healthy choice. However, any type is appreciated. Pop top lids are helpful. Please bring your donations to the Church no later than Easter Sunday, April 28. Ladies Philoptochos is grateful for your continued support of our food drives.
