1 Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church Sunday, April 7, 2019 Sunday of Saint John Climacus SAINTS OF THE WEEK the God-Man. He died peacefully. Celestine, Pope of Rome, celebrated April 8 Celestine was a great apologist of Orthodoxy during the reign of Emperor Theodosius the Younger in the fifth century. Celestine had an excellent education and knew philosophy well, but he was mostly a student of Holy Scripture and theological questions. His reputation as a theologian won him the esteem and love of clergy and people. Celestine succeeded St. Boniface as pope of Rome. He successfully fought the heresy of Nestorius, which claimed that Christ existed as two persons, the man Jesus and the divine Son of God, rather than a unified person. Nestorius also rejected calling Mary the Theotokos, as the Church was beginning to do. He said that Mary was the mother of Christ only in respect to His humanity. Celestine denounced the heresy at a council in Rome and condemned Nestorius as a heretic. He sent letters to the Churches in Antioch, Alexandria, and Constantinople, asking that Nestorius be deposed and excommunicated. Nestorius was banished to Egypt where he later died. After the Council, St. Celestine preached the true meaning about Christ Martius, Abbot of Clermont, celebrated April 13 St. Gregory of Tours recorded the life of St. Martius. Even as a young man, Martius resolved to give himself to God, and upon attaining manhood, he left the world to lead a solitary life. He hewed a cave in a mountainside and carved a bed of stone to sleep on. His way of life and spiritual gifts attracted disciples, and gradually they formed a community, dividing their time between prayer and cultivating the soil. They converted the desert ground into a flourishing garden. Once, a thief broke into the monastery, taking apples, onions, and garlic. But because of the darkness, he was unable to find his way out. At dawn, Martius summoned the prior, telling him to release a bull which had found its way inside. He said, Do not hurt him and let him have all he wants. When the thief saw the prior, he threw down his booty and tried to escape. But the prior reassured him, and packing up his goods, he laid the sack upon the man s shoulders, telling him to go in peace and give up his evil ways. Martius died peacefully at the age of ninety. Καὶ οὕτως μακροθυμήσας ἐπέτυχεν τῆς ἐπαγγελίας. Ἄνθρωποι μὲν γὰρ κατὰ τοῦ μείζονος ὀμνύουσιν, καὶ πάσης αὐτοῖς ἀντιλογίας πέρας εἰς βεβαίωσιν ὁ ὅρκος. Ἐν ᾧ περισσότερον βουλόμενος ὁ θεὸς ἐπιδεῖξαι τοῖς κληρονόμοις τῆς ἐπαγγελίας τὸ ἀμετάθετον τῆς βουλῆς αὐτοῦ, ἐμεσίτευσεν ὅρκῳ, ἵνα διὰ δύο πραγμάτων ἀμεταθέτων, ἐν οἷς ἀδύνατον ψεύσασθαι θεόν, ἰσχυρὰν παράκλησιν ἔχωμεν οἱ καταφυγόντες κρατῆσαι τῆς προκειμένης ἐλπίδος ἣν ὡς ἄγκυραν ἔχομεν τῆς ψυχῆς ἀσφαλῆ τε καὶ βεβαίαν, καὶ εἰσερχομένην εἰς τὸ ἐσώτερον τοῦ καταπετάσματος ὅπου πρόδρομος ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν εἰσῆλθεν Ἰησοῦς, κατὰ τὴν τάξιν Μελχισεδὲκ ἀρχιερεὺς γενόμενος εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα. BRETHREN, when God made a promise to Abraham, since he had no one greater by whom to swear, he swore to himself, saying, "Surely I will bless you and multiply you." And thus Abraham, having patiently endured, obtained the promise. Men indeed swear by a greater than themselves, and in all their disputes an oath is final for confirmation. So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he interposed with an oath, so that through two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible that God should prove false, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to seize the hope set before us. We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner shrine behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek. Τῷ καιρῷ ἐκείνῳ, ἄνθρωπός τις προσῆλθε τῷ Ἰησοῦ λέγων, διδάσκαλε, ἤνεγκα τὸν υἱόν μου πρός σε, ἔχοντα πνεῦμα ἄλαλον. καὶ ὅπου ἂν αὐτὸν καταλάβῃ, ῥήσσει αὐτόν, καὶ ἀφρίζει καὶ τρίζει τοὺς ὀδόντας αὐτοῦ, καὶ ξηραίνεται καὶ εἶπον τοῖς μαθηταῖς σου ἵνα αὐτὸ ἐκβάλωσι, καὶ οὐκ ἴσχυσαν. ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς αὐτῷ λέγει ὦ γενεὰ ἄπιστος, ἕως πότε πρὸς ὑμᾶς ἔσομαι; ἕως πότε ἀνέξομαι ὑμῶν; φέρετε αὐτὸν πρός με. καὶ ἤνεγκαν αὐτὸν πρὸς αὐτόν. καὶ ἰδὼν αὐτὸν εὐθέως τὸ πνεῦμα ἐσπάραξεν αὐτόν, καὶ πεσὼν ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς ἐκυλίετο ἀφρίζων. καὶ ἐπηρώτησε τὸν πατέρα αὐτοῦ πόσος χρόνος ἐστὶν ὡς τοῦτο γέγονεν αὐτῷ; ὁ δὲ εἶπε παιδιόθεν. καὶ πολλάκις αὐτὸν καὶ εἰς πῦρ ἔβαλε καὶ εἰς ὕδατα, ἵνα ἀπολέσῃ αὐτόν ἀλλ εἴ τι δύνασαι, βοήθησον ἡμῖν σπλαγχνισθεὶς ἐφ ἡμᾶς. ὁ δὲ Ιησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτῷ τὸ εἰ δύνασαι πιστεῦσαι, πάντα δυνατὰ τῷ πιστεύοντι. καὶ εὐθέως κράξας ὁ πατὴρ τοῦ παιδίου μετὰ δακρύων ἔλεγε πιστεύω, κύριε βοήθει μου τῇ ἀπιστίᾳ. ἰδὼν δὲ ὁ Ιησοῦς ὅτι ἐπισυντρέχει ὄχλος, ἐπετίμησε τῷ πνεύματι τῷ ἀκαθάρτῳ λέγων αὐτῷ τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ ἄλαλον καὶ κωφόν, ἐγώ σοι ἐπιτάσσω, ἔξελθε ἐξ αὐτοῦ καὶ μηκέτι εἰσέλθῃς εἰς αὐτόν. καὶ κράξαν καὶ πολλὰ σπαράξαν αὐτὸν ἐξῆλθε, καὶ ἐγένετο ὡσεὶ νεκρός, ὥστε πολλοὺς λέγειν ὅτι ἀπέθανεν. ὁ δὲ Ιησοῦς κρατήσας αὐτὸν τῆς χειρὸς ἤγειρεν αὐτόν, καὶ ἀνέστη. Καὶ εἰσελθόντα αὐτὸν εἰς οἶκον οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ ἐπηρώτων αὐτὸν κατ ἰδίαν, ὅτι ἡμεῖς οὐκ ἠδυνήθημεν ἐκβαλεῖν αὐτό. καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς τοῦτο τὸ γένος ἐν οὐδενὶ δύναται ἐξελθεῖν εἰ μὴ ἐν προσευχῇ καὶ νηστείᾳ. Καὶ ἐκεῖθεν ἐξελθόντες παρεπορεύοντο διὰ τῆς Γαλιλαίας, καὶ οὐκ ἤθελεν ἵνα τις γνῷ ἐδίδασκε γὰρ τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ καὶ ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς ὅτι ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου παραδίδοται εἰς χεῖρας ἀνθρώπων, καὶ ἀποκτενοῦσιν αὐτόν, καὶ ἀποκτανθεὶς τῇ τρίτῃ ἡμέρᾳ ἀναστήσεται. At that time, a man came to Jesus kneeling and saying: "Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a dumb spirit; and wherever it seizes him it dashes him down; and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid; and I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able." And he answered them, "O faithless generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me." And they brought the boy to him; and when the spirit saw him, immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. And Jesus asked his father, "How long has he had this?" And he said, "From childhood. And it has often cast him into the fire and into the water, to destroy him; but if you can do anything, have pity on us and help us." And Jesus said to him, "If you can! All things are possible to him who believes." Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, "I believe; help my unbelief!" And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, "You dumb and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him, and never enter him again." And after crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out, and the boy was like a corpse; so that most of them said, "He is dead." But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. And when he had entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, "Why could we not cast it out?" And he said to them, "This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer and fasting." They went on from there and passed through Galilee. And he would not have any one know it; for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, "The Son of man will be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him; and when he is killed, after three days he will rise."

4 Δεν μετανοούν, δεν εξομολογούνται, δεν διορθώνονται, και χαίρεται το ταγκαλάκι Αγίου Παΐσιου Αγιορείτου Γέροντα, μερικοί λένε: «Δεν βρίσκουμε καλούς πνευματικούς, γι' αυτό δεν πάμε να ε- ξομολογηθούμε». - Αυτά είναι δικαιολογίες. Κάθε πνευματικός έχει θεία εξουσία, εφόσον φοράει πετραχήλι. Τελεί το μυστήριο, έχει την θεία Χάρη και, όταν διαβάση την συγχωρητική ευχή, ο Θεός σβήνει όλες τις αμαρτίες τις οποίες εξομολογηθήκαμε με ειλικρινή μετάνοια. Από μας εξαρτάται πόσο θα βοηθηθούμε από το μυστήριο της εξομολογήσεως. Ήρθε εκεί στο Καλύβι μια φορά κάποιος που είχε ψυχολογικά προβλήματα, με τον λογισμό ότι έχω διορατικό χάρισμα και θα μπορούσα να τον βοηθήσω. «Τι προβλέπεις, μου λέει, για μένα;». «Να βρεις, του λέω, έναν πνευματικό να εξομολογείσαι, για να κοιμάσαι σαν το πουλάκι και να μην παίρνεις χάπια». «Δεν υπάρχουν, μου λέει, σήμερα καλοί πνευματικοί. Παλιά υπήρχαν». Έρχονται με καλό λογισμό, ότι θα βοηθηθούν, αλλά δεν δέχονται αυτό που τους λες, και κρίμα στα ναύλα. Βλέπω όμως και μια καινούργια τέχνη του διαβόλου. Βάζει στους ανθρώπους τον λογισμό ότι, αν κάνουν κάποιο τάμα και το εκπληρώσουν, αν πάνε και κανένα προσκύνημα, είναι εντάξει πνευματικά. Και βλέπεις πολλούς να πηγαίνουν με λαμπάδες και με τάματα στα μοναστήρια, στα προσκυνήματα, να τα κρεμάνε εκεί, να κάνουν και μεγάλους σταυρούς, να κλαίνε και λιγάκι, και να αρκούνται σ' αυτά. Δεν μετανοούν, δεν εξομολογούνται, δεν διορθώνονται, και χαίρεται το ταγκαλάκι. CALLING ALL READERS! 6 St. John Klimakos (of the Ladder), the Abbot of Mount Sinai By St. Nikolai Velimirovich John came to Mt. Sinai as a sixteen year old youth and remained there, first as a novice under obedience, and afterwards as a recluse, and finally as abbot of Sinai until his eightieth year. He died around the year 563 A.D. His biographer, the monk Daniel, says about him: "His body ascended the heights of Sinai, while his soul ascended the heights of heaven." He remained under obedience with his spiritual father, Martyrius, for nineteen years. Anastasius of Sinai, seeing the young John, prophesied that he would become the abbot of Sinai. After the death of his spiritual father, John withdrew into a cave [at Thola], where he lived a difficult life of asceticism for [forty] years. His disciple, Moses, fell asleep one day under the shade of a large stone. John, in prayer in his cell, saw that his disciple was in danger and prayed to God for him. Later on, when Moses returned, he fell on his knees and gave thanks to his spiritual father for saving him from certain death. He related how, in a dream, he heard John calling him and he jumped up and, at that moment, the stone tumbled. Had he not jumped, the stone would have crushed him. At the insistence of the brotherhood, John agreed to become abbot and directed the salvation of the souls of men with zeal and love. From someone John heard a reproach that he talked too much. Not being angered by this, John however remained silent for an entire year and did not utter a word until the brothers implored him to speak and to continue to teach them his God-given wisdom. On one occasion, when sixhundred pilgrims came to the Monastery of Sinai, everyone saw an agile youth in Jewish attire serving at a table and giving orders to other servants and assigning them. All at once, this young man disappeared. When everyone noticed this and began to question it, John said to them, "Do not seek him, for that was Moses the Prophet serving in my place." During the time of his silence in the cave, John wrote many worthwhile books, of which the most glorious is "The Ladder". This book is still read by many, even today. In this book, John describes the method of elevating the soul to God, as ascending a ladder. Before his death, John designated George, his brother in the flesh, as abbot. George grieved much because of his separation from John. Then John said to him, that, if he [John] were found worthy to be near God in the other world, he would pray to Him, that, he, [George], would be taken to heaven that same year. And, so it was. After ten months George succeeded and settled among the citizens of heaven as did his great brother, John. "Ascend, brothers, ascend eagerly, and be resolved in your hearts to ascend and hear him who says: Come and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, and to the house of our God, who makes our feet like hind's feet, and sets us upon high places, that we might be victors with His song." - St. John Climacus, The Ladder of Divine Ascent,
