Newman M 6 This study aimed to develop the nursing intervention program that assists patients with breast cancer during the process in which they discover a new self-image and attitude towards life, and to evaluate the usefulness of the program through practical application. The nursing program for the rehabilitation of patients with breast cancer was designed on the basis of the concept of cancer survivorship, with integration of conventional care according to a critical path approach as well as individual care and interviews based on M. Newman s health theory. After implementation, the program was evaluated using a longitudinal, descriptive and qualitative research design. The contents of interviews with participants and a self-reflection journal kept by the researcher were qualitatively analyzed. As a result of program s implementation, the participants underwent the process which involved the following: recognition of the state they were in; discovery of the meaning of the cancer experience; significant transformation of awareness and behaviours such as changes in lifestyle, work and value, and extended human relationships; and establishment of new selfhood and attitude towards life. It was suggested that the program is useful as a method of care that accelerates the process of reconstruction of selfhood in breast cancer patients.
