Announcements Lenten Breakfast on Holy Saturday - Attention all Youth Groups! All youth groups will attend morning Divine Liturgy on Holy Saturday (April 27th) at 9:30 a.m. and will gather afterwards for refreshments and a Lenten breakfast in the Church Hall. Children s Candles for Easter are available for purchase for $17 each at the narthex of our church. All proceeds from these beautiful hand-decorated candles go towards the needs of the church. Have no anxiety about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will keep your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, do; and the God of peace will be with you. The Gospel Reading: St. John 12:1-18 Six days before Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazaros was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. There they made him a supper; Martha served, and Lazaros was one of those at table with him. Mary took a pound of costly ointment of pure nard and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment. But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was to betray him), said "Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?" This he said, not that he cared for the poor but because he was a thief, and as he had the money box he used to take what was put into it. Jesus said, "Let her alone, let her keep it for the day of my burial. The poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me." When the great crowd of the Jews learned that he was there, they came, not only on account of Jesus but also to see Lazaros, whom he had raised from the dead. So the chief priests planned to put Lazaros also to death, because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus. The next day a great crowd who had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying, "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!" And Jesus found a young donkey and sat upon it; as it is written, "Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey's colt!" His disciples did not understand this at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that this had been written of him and had been done to him. The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazaros out of the tomb and raised him from the dead bore witness. The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this sign.

Watchfulness The whole theme of the Christian s life is watchfulness, preparedness, expectant faith. The end is always imminent, always spiritually close at hand. We are constantly only a heart beat away form judgment. And just as it is appointed for me to die once, and after that comes the judgment. (Heb. 9: 27). How well this sense of urgency is captured by the words of St. Andrew of Crete, recited each Lent in the Great Canon: My soul, O my soul, rise up! Why are thou sleeping! The end draws near, and soon shalt thou be troubled. Watch then, that Christ thy God may spare thee, For He is everywhere present and fills all things. The Lord Jesus said, Let your loins be girded and your lamps burning and be like men who are waiting for their master to come home from the marriage feast, so that they may open to him at once when he comes and knocks. Blessed are these servants whom the master finds awake when he comes; truly, I say to you, he will gird himself and have them sit at the table, and he will come and serve them. You also must be ready; for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect (Luke 12: 35 40). God will one day step into history in the Person of Jesus to judge the living and the dead. We must all appear before the judgement seat of Christ; so that each one may receive good or evil, according to what he has done in the body (2Cor. 5:10). The purpose of Judgement is not to make us afraid but to drive us to repentance so that we may become truly His people by faith, hope and love. God s judgment is redemptive. He wants all to be saved and to come to the knowledge of truth. Fr. St. Isaac the Syrian Επαγρύπνηση Η όλη ουσία της ζωής τού Χριστιανού είναι η επαγρύπνηση, η ετοιμότητα και η πίστη. Το τέλος είναι αναπόφευκτο και πολύ κοντά. (Προς Εβραίους 9.27). Πόσο όμορφα εκφράζεται αυτή η αίσθηση του επείγοντος στα λόγια του Αγίου Ανδρέα Κρήτης που ψάλλονται κατά τον Μεγάλο Κανόνα κάθε Μεγάλη Τεσσαρακοστή. Ψυχή μου, ψυχή μου! Σήκω! Γιατί κοιμάσαι; Το τέλος της ζωής σου φτάνει και σε περιμένει ταραχή. Ξύπνα λοιπόν για να σε λυπηθεί ο Χριστός και Θεός, Εκείνος που βρίσκεται παντού και πληροί τα πάντα με την παρουσία Του. Είπεν ο Κύριος: «Να είστε πάντα έτοιμοι και τα λυχνάρια σας να είναι πάντοτε αναμμένα. Να είστε όπως εκείνοι που περιμένουν πότε θα επιστρέψει ο κύριός τους από τη διασκέδαση έτσι ώστε μόλις τους χτυπήσει την πόρτα να του ανοίξουν αμέσως. Ευλογημένοι είναι εκείνοι, τους οποίους, όταν έλθει ο Κύριος θα τους βρει να αγρυπνούν. Σας βεβαιώνω ότι, τότε, Εκείνος θα γίνει διάκονός τους... Πρέπει να είστε έτοιμοι γιατί ο Υιός του Ανθρώπου, έρχεται σε ώρα που δεν περιμένετε (Κατά Λουκάν 12:35-40)» Ο Θεός θα κρίνει ζώντας και νεκρούς μέσω του Ιησού. «Τους γαρ πάντας ημάς φανερωθήναι δει έμπροσθεν του βήματος του Χριστού, ίνα κομίσηται έκαστος τα δια του σώματος προς α έπραξεν, είτε αγαθόν είτε κακόν». (Διότι όλοι μας θα παρουσιασθούμε μπροστά στον Χριστό έτσι ώστε, ο καθένας από εμάς να αποκομίσει και να απολαύσει ανάλογα με τα όσα έπραξε δια του σώματός του, είτε αγαθά είτε κακά). (Προς Κορινθίους 5:10) Ο Θεός, μας μίλησε για την Ημέρα της Κρίσεως όχι για να μας κάνει να φοβηθούμε αλλά για να οδηγηθούμε στη μετάνοια κι έτσι μέσω της πίστης, της ελπίδας και της αγάπης να γίνουμε, αληθινά, «ο λαός Του». Θέλει όλους μας να σωθούμε και να γνωρίζουμε την αλήθεια.
