LAZAROS/PALM SUNDAY ΤῆΣ ἙΟΡΤῆΣ Apolytikion To confirm the general resurrection before Your Passion, You resurrected Lazarus from the dead, O Christ our God. Therefore imitating the children, carrying the symbols of victory, we cry out to You the Victor over death: "Hosanna in the highest! Blessed are You, the One, who comes in the name of the Lord. Kontakion In heaven upon the throne, on earth upon the colt, * You were carried, O Christ our God; * and the praise of the Angels, and the hymns of the children, You received as they cried to You, * "Blessed are You, the One, who is coming to call Adam back again. At that time, a certain man was ill, Lazaros of Bethany, from the village of Mary and her sister Martha. It was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazaros was ill. So the sisters sent to him, saying, "Lord, he whom you love is ill." OF LAZAROS ΚΑΤᾺ ἸΩΑΝΝΗΝ 11:1-45 Κάποιος που ονομαζόταν Λάζαρος αρρώστησε. Ήταν από τη Βηθανία, το χωριό όπου κατοικούσαν η Μαρία και η αδερφή της η Μάρθα. 3 God may be glorified by means of it." Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazaros. So when he heard that he was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was. Then after this he said to the disciples, "Let us go into Judea again." The disciples said to him, "Rabbi, the Jews were but now seeking to stone you, and are you going there again?" Jesus answered, "Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any one walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. But if any one walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him." Thus he spoke, and then he said to them, "Our friend Lazaros has fallen asleep, but I go to awake him out of sleep." The disciples said to him, "Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover." Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he meant taking rest in sleep. Then Jesus told them plainly, "Lazaros is dead; and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him." Thomas, called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, "Let us also go, that we may die with him." Now when Jesus came, he found that Lazaros had already been in the tomb four days. Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles off, and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them concerning their brother. When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, while Mary sat in the house. Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. And even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you." Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again." Martha said to him, "I know έλεγαν: «Κύριε, ο αγαπημένος σου φίλος είναι άρρωστος». Έπειτα, αφού πέρασαν αυτές οι δυο μέρες, λέει στους μαθητές: «Ας ξαναγυρίσουμε στην Ιουδαία». Του λένε τότε οι μαθητές: «Διδάσκαλε, μόλις τώρα οι Ιουδαίοι ζητούσαν να σε λιθοβολήσουν, κι εσύ θες να πας πάλι εκεί;» Ο Ιησούς αποκρίθηκε: «Δώδεκα ώρες δεν έχει η μέρα; Αν περπατάει κανείς τη μέρα δε σκοντάφτει, γιατί βλέπει το φως αυτού του κόσμου. Αν όμως περπατάει κανείς τη νύχτα, σκοντάφτει, γιατί, βέβαια, το φως δεν είναι μέσα του». Αυτά είπε, κι αμέσως ύστερα τους λέει: «Ο Λάζαρος ο φίλος μας κοιμήθηκε, πηγαίνω όμως να τον ξυπνήσω». Του είπαν τότε οι μαθητές: «Κύριε, αν κοιμήθηκε, θα γίνει καλά». Ο Ιησούς όμως είχε μιλήσει για το θάνατό του, ενώ εκείνοι νόμισαν πως μιλάει για το συνηθισμένο ύπνο. Τότε λοιπόν ο Ιησούς τους μίλησε καθαρά: «Ο Λάζαρος πέθανε», τους λέει, «και χαίρομαι για σας, για να πιστέψετε, επειδή δεν ήμουν εκεί όταν πέθανε ας πάμε όμως κοντά του». Τότε ο Θωμάς, που λεγόταν Δίδυμος, είπε στους άλλους μαθητές: «Πάμε κι εμείς, να πεθάνουμε μαζί του». Όταν λοιπόν έφτασε ο Ιησούς, ο Λάζαρος βρισκόταν κιόλας τέσσερις μέρες στο μνήμα. Η Βηθανία ήταν κοντά στα Ιεροσόλυμα, σε απόσταση δεκαπέντε περίπου στάδια. Πολλοί από τους Ιουδαίους της πόλης είχαν έρθει στη Μάρθα και τη Μαρία, να τις παρηγορήσουν για το θάνατο του αδερφού τους. Όταν όμως η Μάρθα έμαθε ότι έρχεται ο Ιησούς, πήγε να τον προϋπαντήσει, ενώ η 3

Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and whoever lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?" She said to him, "Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, he who is coming into the world." When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying quietly, "The Teacher is here and is calling for you." And when she heard it, she rose quickly and went to him. Now Jesus had not yet come to the village, but was still in the place where Martha had met him. When the Jews who were with her in the house, consoling her, saw Mary rise quickly and go out, they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there. Then Mary, when she came where Jesus was and saw him, fell at his feet, saying to him, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died." When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled; and he said, "Where have you laid him?" They said to him, "Lord, come and see." Jesus wept. So the Jews said, "See how he loved him!" But some of them said, "Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?" Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb; it was a cave, and a stone lay upon it. Jesus said, "Take away the stone." Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, "Lord, by this time there will be an odor, for he has been dead four days." Jesus said to her, "Did I not tell you that if you would believe you would see the glory Μαρία έμεινε στο σπίτι. Είπε τότε η Μάρθα στον Ιησού: «Κύριε, αν ήσουν εδώ, δε θα πέθαινε ο αδερφός μου. Ξέρω όμως πως και τώρα, ό,τι κι αν ζητήσεις από το Θεό, αυτός θα σου το δώσει. «Ο αδερφός σου θ αναστηθεί», της λέει ο Ιησούς. «Το ξέρω πως θ αναστηθεί, όταν θα γίνει η ανάσταση στην έσχατη ημέρα», του απάντησε η Μάρθα. Τότε ο Ιησούς της είπε: «Εγώ είμαι η ανάσταση και η ζωή εκείνος που πιστεύει σ εμένα, και αν πεθάνει, θα ζήσει και καθένας που ζει κι εμπιστεύεται σ εμένα δε θα πεθάνει ποτέ. Το πιστεύεις αυτό;» «Ναι, Κύριε», του λέει, «εγώ έχω πιστέψει πως εσύ είσαι ο Χριστός, ο Υιός του Θεού, που περιμέναμε να ρθεί στον κόσμο». Αφού τα είπε αυτά, έφυγε και ειδοποίησε κρυφά την αδερφή της τη Μαρία, λέγοντας: «Ο Διδάσκαλος έφτασε και σε ζητάει». Εκείνη, μόλις το άκουσε, σηκώθηκε γρήγορα κι έτρεξε να πάει κοντά του, γιατί ο Ιησούς δεν είχε φτάσει ακόμα στο χωριό, αλλά βρισκόταν στον τόπο όπου τον συνάντησε η Μάρθα. Οι Ιουδαίοι, λοιπόν, που ήταν στο σπίτι και την παρηγορούσαν, όταν είδαν τη Μαρία να σηκώνεται βιαστικά και να βγαίνει από το σπίτι, την ακολούθησαν, νομίζοντας πως πηγαίνει στο μνήμα για να κλάψει εκεί. Η Μαρία όμως, όταν ήρθε εκεί που ήταν ο Ιησούς, καθώς τον αντίκρυσε, έπεσε στα πόδια του και του έλεγε: «Κύριε, αν ήσουν εδώ, δε θα πέθαινε ο αδερφός μου». Ο Ιησούς, όταν την είδε να κλαίει, να κλαίνε κι οι Ιουδαίοι που είχαν έρθει μαζί της, λυπήθηκε βαθιά και ταράχτηκε. «Πού τον έχετε βάλει;» τους ρώτησε. Του λένε: «Κύριε, έλα και δες». Τότε ο Ιησούς δάκρυσε. «Δες πόσο τον αγαπούσε!» έλεγαν οι Ιουδαίοι. «Δε θα μπορούσε αυτός, που άνοιξε τα μάτια του τυφλού, να κάνει κάτι, ώστε κι αυτός εδώ να μην πεθάνει;» έλεγαν μερικοί απ αυτούς. Ο Ιησούς, ταραγμένος πάλι και θλιμμένος μέσα του, έρχεται στο 4

I knew that you have heard me always, but I have said this on account of the people standing by, that they may believe that you did send me." When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, "Lazaros, come out." The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with bandages, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Unbind him, and let him go." Many of the Jews therefore, who had come with Mary and had seen what he did, believed in him. μνήμα. Τότε ο Ιησούς σήκωσε τα μάτια ψηλά και είπε: «Πατέρα, σ ευχαριστώ που με άκουσες. Εγώ το ήξερα ότι πάντα με ακούς το είπα όμως για χάρη του πλήθους που στέκει εδώ γύρω, για να πιστέψουν πως εσύ με έστειλες». Κι όταν τα είπε αυτά, κραύγασε με φωνή δυνατή: «Λάζαρε, έλα έξω!» Βγήκε ο νεκρός με δεμένα τα πόδια και τα χέρια σε πάνινες λουρίδες, και το πρόσωπό του περιτυλιγμένο με το σουδάριο. Τους λέει τότε ο Ιησούς: «Λύστε τον κι αφήστε τον να περπατήσει». GOSPEL - JOHN 12:1-18 PALM SUNDAY ΚΑΤᾺ ἸΩΑΝΝΗΝ 12:1-18 Six days before Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazaros was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. There they made him a supper; Martha served, and Lazaros was one of those at table with him. Mary took a pound of costly ointment of pure nard and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment. But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was to betray him), said "Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?" This he said, not that he cared for the poor but because he was a thief, and as he had the money box he used to take what was put Πρὸ ἓξ ἡμερῶν τοῦ πάσχα ἦλθεν Ὁ Ιησοῦς εἰς Βηθανίαν, ὅπου ἦν Λάζαρος ὁ τ ε θ ν η κ ώ ς, ὃ ν ἤ γ ε ι ρ ε ν ἐ κ νεκρῶν. ἐποίησαν οὖν αὐτῷ δεῖπνον ἐκεῖ, καὶ ἡ Μάρθα διηκόνει ὁ δὲ Λάζαρος εἷς ἦν τῶν ἀνακειμένων σὺν αὐτῷ. ἡ οὖν Μαρία, λαβοῦσα λίτραν μύρου νάρδου πιστικῆς πολυτίμου, ἤλειψε τοὺς πόδας τοῦ Ιησοῦ καὶ ἐξέμαξε ταῖς θριξὶν αὐτῆς τοὺς πόδας αὐτοῦ ἡ δὲ οἰκία ἐπληρώθη ἐκ τῆς ὀσμῆς τοῦ μύρου. λέγει οὖν εἷς ἐκ τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ, Ιούδας Σίμωνος Ι σ κ α ρ ι ώ τ η ς, ὁ μέ λ λ ω ν α ὐ τ ὸ ν παραδιδόναι διατί τοῦτο τὸ μύρον οὐκ ἐπράθη τριακοσίων δηναρίων καὶ ἐδόθη πτωχοῖς; εἶπε δὲ τοῦτο οὐχ ὅτι περὶ τῶν πτωχῶν ἔμελεν αὐτῷ, ἀλλ ὅτι κλέπτης ἦν, καὶ τὸ γλωσσόκομον εἶχε καὶ τὰ βαλλόμενα ἐβάσταζεν. εἶπεν οὖν ὁ 5

6 into it. Jesus said, "Let her alone, let her keep it for the day of my burial. The poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me." When the great crowd of the Jews learned that he was there, they came, not only on account of Jesus but also to see Lazaros, whom he had raised from the dead. So the chief priests planned to put Lazaros also to death, because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus. The next day a great crowd who had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying, "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!" And Jesus found a young donkey and sat upon it; as it is written, "Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey's colt!" His disciples did not understand this at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that this had been written of him and had been done to him. The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazaros out of the tomb and raised him from the dead bore witness. The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this sign. Ιησοῦς ἄφες αὐτήν, εἰς τὴν ἡμέραν τοῦ ἐνταφιασμοῦ μου τετήρηκεν αὐτό. τοὺς πτωχοὺς γὰρ πάντοτε ἔχετε μεθ ἑαυτῶν, ἐμὲ δὲ οὐ πάντοτε ἔχετε. Εγνω οὖν ὄχλος πολὺς ἐκ τῶν Ιουδαίων ὅτι ἐκεῖ ἐστι, καὶ ἦλθον οὐ διὰ τὸν Ιησοῦν μόνον, ἀλλ ἵνα καὶ τὸν Λάζαρον ἴδωσιν ὃν ἤγειρεν ἐκ νεκρῶν. ἐβουλεύσαντο δὲ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς ἵνα καὶ τὸν Λάζαρον ἀποκτείνωσιν, ὅτι πολλοὶ δι αὐτὸν ὑπῆγον τῶν Ιουδαίων καὶ ἐπίστευον εἰς τὸν Ιησοῦν. Τῇ ἐπαύριον ὄχλος πολὺς ὁ ἐλθὼν εἰς τὴν ἑορτήν, ἀκούσαντες ὅτι ἔρχεται Ιησοῦς εἰς Ιεροσόλυμα, ἔλαβον τὰ βαΐα τῶν φοινίκων καὶ ἐξῆλθον εἰς ὑπάντησιν α ὐ τ ῷ, κ α ὶ ἔ κ ρ α ζ ο ν ὡ σ α ν ν ά, εὐλογημένος ὁ ἐρχόμενος ἐν ὀνόματι Κυρίου, ὁ βασιλεὺς τοῦ Ισραήλ. εὑρὼν δὲ ὁ Ιησοῦς ὀνάριον ἐκάθισεν ἐπ αὐτό, καθώς ἐστι γεγραμμένον μὴ φοβοῦ, θύγατερ Σιών ἰδοὺ ὁ βασιλεύς σου ἔρχεται καθήμενος ἐπὶ πῶλον ὄνου. Ταῦτα δὲ οὐκ ἔγνωσαν οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ τὸ πρῶτον, ἀλλ ὅτε ἐδοξάσθη ὁ Ιησοῦς, τότε ἐμνήσθησαν ὅτι ταῦτα ἦν ἐπ αὐτῷ γεγραμμένα, καὶ ταῦτα ἐποίησαν αὐτῷ. Εμαρτύρει οὖν ὁ ὄχλος ὁ ὢν μετ αὐτοῦ ὅτε τὸν Λάζαρον ἐφώνησεν ἐκ τοῦ μνημείου καὶ ἤγειρεν αὐτὸν ἐκ νεκρῶν. διὰ τοῦτο καὶ ὑπήντησεν αὐτῷ ὁ ὄχλος, ὅτι ἤκουσαν τοῦτο αὐτὸν πεποιηκέναι τὸ σημεῖον. We are looking for things like old icons, Hellenic artifacts brought over from Greece, etc. We are especially looking for artifacts with a Waterbury connection. Do you have a historical photo from a restaurant downtown? How about an old menu from your family s restaurant? We are looking for keepsake type items that connect to either our faith or heritage and have a Waterbury connection.
