Our firm The farm is located on the first hills of the plain of Sibari, in the municipally of Corigliano, a town famous for the production of clementines. It is surrounted by beautiful olive trees and it has a territorial position enough to allow a panoramic view on the whole plain of Sibari which reminds us of the ancient capital of Magna Grecia and it makes us live that ambience visiting the archaeological sites and the museums. The Casacchella has a unique background, surrounted by the chain of Pollino and the mountains of the Sila Greca and has a very good view to Jonio sea that is far only 5 km. The tipical regional cuisine will capture the liking with mediterranean tastes and fragrances. Le camere dispongono di caminetto, mantengono l antica struttura con pavimenti in cotto e tetto con travi a vista. Our firm For three centuries Iti has been property of the Cherubini s family. Originally it was an estate of olives from which it was extracted a fine oil, today it is a modern citrus orchard land with young olive trees that mark the boundary. The oil, here produced, is used to make preserves and dishes that it is possible to taste in the firm. Iti is 3 kilometres far from the Jonio sea and the nearest town. Cyprus Development Agency of Larnaca Territory Data Area (Kmq) 8500 ht Population Density (inh/sq.km) 9,79 inh/sq.m Population 83.240 Number of Municipalities 51 The Leader+ area of the LAG of the Development Agency of Larnaca is the whole district of Larnaca, except the city of Larnaca, consisting of 3 Municipalities and 48 Communities. The district has mountainous and semi-mountainous area, coastal and plain area. The Agency, in collaboration with 10 other institutions of the district, has been approved as a LAG under section 4.2 of the EU programming period 2000-2006. The LAG proceeded to the designing of the existing situation of the area and with proposals for improving and strengthening the whole area. Its study has finished and soon, after the call for applications will be announced, it will apply for approval as a LAG for Leader actions. 48

The main activities of the Agency as a LAG have been or are the following. Development of the agrotourism and the standardization of local traditional products. Formation of the Ladies Association of Rural Larnaca for the promotion of the Agrotourism and the Industrialization of Local Traditional Products. Organisation every year, in collaboration with the Union of Communities of Larnaca and the Ladies Association of Rural Larnaca, a rural festival about local traditional products. The Agency, with its Agriculturist, provides advices and help about agriculture aspects to any citizen asking for such help. In collaboration with the Agriculture Department and not only it organizes many informative meetings in different places of the District of Larnaca, for various agriculture aspects. Alerting the local population on leader matters and preparing it for participation in leader activities. It has been approved by the Department of Agriculture as an Accredited Institution for providing technical and advisory services to farmers, charging very low prices and having as a target to assist the farmers.the Agency helps continuously many farmers. 49

Έτσι φτιάχτηκε ο πολιτισµός και η µοναδική ταυτότητα της Κρήτης: σύνθετη αλλά και απλή, ατόφια αλλά και άµεση συναρπάζει µε την πρώτη επαφή και δένει τον ντόπιο αλλά και τον ξένο σ ένα µυστήριο έρωτα. Σ αυτήν την εναλλαγή του τοπίου του νησιού στηρίζεται σε µεγάλο βαθµό ο πλούτος των παραδόσεων και συµπεριφορών των ανθρώπων του. Η σχέση των ανθρώπων της Κρήτης µε το νησί υπήρξε από την αρχαιότητα ιερή. Αυτή η σχέση βρήκε την πιο γνήσιά έκφραση της στην θεοποίηση της ίδιας της φύσης και στην στενή σύνδεση των θεών της Κρήτης µε τις γονιµοποιητικές δυνάµεις. Η γνωριµία µε την Κρήτη δεν έχει να κάνει µόνο µε τον ζεστό καλοκαιρινό ήλιο και τη δροσερή θάλασσα. Alternative forms of Tourism in Crete Crete: The Island of Contrasts Crete is the largest island of Greece, a gifted place situated among three continents and five seas and has always been the crossroad of and apple of discord for numerous cultures and peoples. The Minoan civilization flourished on this island for over 4000 years and left its indelible marks which inspire wonderful images of a glorious past. The excavations and findings from the archaeological sites of Knossos, Phaestos and Zakros, but also from Eleftherna, Malia and Olous, indicate that such places were inhabitted by people who had mastered skills and knowledge which, by current technical and technological standards, are highly admired. In addition, they had attained admirable social and economic organization and magnificent culture throughout the entire Minoan period. Through the ages the strategic location of Crete, its natural beauties and hardworking people caught the expansionist interest of Romans, Arabs, Venetians and Turks. These peoples occupied the island for long periods of time and each left their marks and legacy on the island. The above explains the long and eventful formative period of the Cretan identity. This identity can be both complex and simple, as it has the capacity for a genuine and direct impression on the mind, charming both locals and visitors. The charm of the physical, variegated landscape finds its expression in the human mind, subsequently fosters ideas and practices which percolate to distinctive cultural forms. The relationship of Cretans with their island has always been sacred, which explains the deification of nature and the fertility character of the gods of Crete. Crete is more than hot summer days and cool sea. It is, more than anything else, the source of knowledge of the roots of Europe and the close relationship between man and nature. The particular cultural, natural and climatic characteristics of the island, combined with active and warm hospitality, made Crete a most favourite destination for vacations. In this island the visitor can witness traditional farming activities taking place in the unspoiled countryside, people that are obligingly hospitable, mild climate which favours all kinds of outdoor activities and the appreciation of nature in all four seasons, and graphic celebrations and festivities all year round. The products of the island are excellent and much sought after in domestic and international markets; add to all this the impression one gets from the thousands of traditional villages that are doting the magnificent landscape of Crete. However, it is the people of Crete who make the most difference in anything that may capture the admiration of visitors. One should not miss the chance to visit Cretan Cuisine accredited restaurants serving dishes prepared following the famous local recipes, and traditional coffee shops serving Greek coffee heated to almost boiling point in bronze pots on hot ashes. In addition, one should visit women s enterprises making traditional products; there are organic farms, nature trails, cottage industries (e.g. carpenter s shops, potter s workshops, cheese, textiles, etc.) As regards overnight stays in the hinterland of the island, it has been noticed an intensification in the construction of accommodation units in recent years. Most of these units meet the highest quality standards. Specifically, the accommodation units built during the last ten years make a harmonious integration into the natural and civil environment of their surrounding area. In addition, as regards board services these units utilize to their advantage local products and human resources. Breakfast in these units is a memorable experience, with products resourced from own or local farms and prepared with love and artistry for maximum flavour and taste. Most of the rural accommodation units were established in the 90s and in subsequent years more were built by taking advantage of Community subsidies, e.g. of Community Initiative Leader II and Leader+, as well as of Integrated Rural Development Programmes. 55

Τα περισσότερα από τα δηµιουργήθηκαν από τη δεκαετία του 90 και έπειτα, µέσω κοινοτικών συγχρηµατοδοτήσεων, όπως η Κοινοτική Πρωτοβουλία Leader ΙΙ και Leader+ και τα Ολοκληρωµένα Προγράµµατα Ανάπτυξης Αγροτικού Χώρου. Εκτός από τα καταλύµατα, σηµαντικός είναι και ο αριθµός των επιχειρήσεων εστίασης που λειτουργούν. Με στόχο τη ανάδειξη και διατήρηση της ποιοτικής Κρητικής κουζίνας, ο φορέας «Ελληνική Ακαδηµία Γεύσης», δηµιούργησε πρότυπο ποιότητας για τις µονάδες εστίασης, και µέχρι σήµερα έχουν πιστοποιηθεί αρκετά εστιατόρια και ταβέρνες. Μια περιπλάνηση αναζήτησης του Σήµατος Κρητικής ιατροφής ανταµείβει πάντα µε γευστικές εµπειρίες υγιεινής απόλαυσης. Ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον παρουσιάζουν τα επισκέψιµα οινοποιεία αλλά και τα ρακοκάζανα του νησιού. Από τα 22 µέλη του ικτύου Οινοπαραγωγών Νοµού Ηρακλείου, τα εννέα (9) διαθέτουν επισκέψιµους χώρους προσφέροντας ενηµέρωση για το κρασί και γευστική δοκιµή. Αυτά βρίσκονται στους οικισµούς: Μελέσες, αφνές, Σκαλάνι, Κουνάβοι, Αλάγνι, Βοριάς Χαρακίου, Πεζά, Αγιές Παρασκιές και Χουδέτσι του Ηρακλείου αλλά και στον Αλίκαµπο και τον Βαττόλακκο Χανίων ή στην περίφηµη Μονή Τοπλού στο Λασίθι. Καθώς όµως ο τρόπος λειτουργίας και η ποιότητα των υποδοµών και υπηρεσιών διαφοροποιείται σηµαντικά από τη µία In addition to the rural accommodation units, significant also is the number of restaurants in operation. With the aim to enhance and promote the quality aspect of the Cretan cuisine, the Hellenic Academy of Taste created a standard for quality on the basis of which a number of restaurants and taverns have been accredited. The search for such accredited restaurants/taverns (look for the accreditation sign!) always compensates with food rich in taste and nutrition. Some local wineries, which are open to the public, attract significant interest, as do the makeshift raki distilleries of the island. The Wine Producers Network of Heraklion numbers twenty two (22) members, nine (9) of which open their premises to the public for a guided tour, information and wine tasting. These nine wineries are located in/near the following villages in the prefecture of Heraklion: Melesses, Dafnes, Skalani, Kounavi, Alagni, Vorgias Harakiou, Peza, Agies Paraskies and Houdetsi. In the prefecture of Hania the corresponding wineries are in Alicampos and Vattolacos, also in the Toplou Monastery in the prefecture of Lassithi. Whereas the modus operanti and the quality of infrastructure varies from one winery to another, the contemplated set up off the Wine Routes is expected to lead to a comprehensive upgrade of the quality 56

Εκεί όπου παράγεται κρασί εδώ και 4.000 χρόνια of the wine making sector and the acclamation of the Cretan vineyard. To this end and at short distance from the wineries an integrated thematic network has been set up combining cultural and historical elements, rural accommodation units, farms and local products workshops (potteries, icon painting) that are open to the public. In other words, an entire thematic network has been organized around wine making activities in Crete. There is no doubt that the wine connoisseurs can hardly pass a visit to the oldest winepress in the famous Vathypetro location, near the village of Archanes.
