NO SCHOOL ON FEBRUARY 18 th PRESIDENT S DAY January 30th we celebrate the memory of the Three Hierarhs. The Three Hierarhs were saints of our church and protectors of the Greek language. The Three Hierarhs are the ones that all teachers, students and educators look up as a beacon of light for knowledge. This year, on January 27th our students from the Greek school presented their work in the church by giving a short biography of each Hierarh. The presenters were: Alexa Fotinos (introduction), Bobby Dokos, Kimon Economou, Irene Kabitsis (short Bio of each Saint) and Melina Chiotis (with a closing remarks). After words Father Peter invited the Consul General of Greece, Mrs Xenia Stefanidou which in turn congratulated the students for a work well done and expanded on the work of the Three Hierarhs, After church the Greek school had sponsored the "coffee hour" at the Oaks and there our students from the "Chorodia" under the direction of Ms Dora Zoiopoulos sung beautifully Hymns for the Three Hierachs. The singers were: Melina, Natalia, and Xristiana Chiotis, Kimonn Economou, Irene and Dimitra Kabitsis, Stamatis Papadopoulos, Melina Stavropoulou and Stathis Kavantzas. The Day was concluded by the cutting of the vasilopita. PLEASE SAVE THE DATES!!! For the celebration of our 25 th of March we need to have our students attend a general rehearsal. We ask you to please reserve the following dates: Saturday March 15 th and March 22 nd from 10:00 to 12:00.

However, Jack Oruch demonstrated that prior to Chaucer, no links between the Saints named Valentinus and romantic love existed. Thus whether or not in the ancient Athenian calendar, the period between mid-january and mid-february was the month of Gamelion, was dedicated to the sacred marriage of Zeus and Hera is immaterial. In Ancient Rome, February 15 was Lupercalia, an archaic rite connected to fertility, without overtones of romance. Plutarch wrote: Lupercalia, of which many write that it was anciently celebrated by shepherds, and has also some connection with the Arcadian Lycaea. At this time many of the noble youths and of the magistrates run up and down through the city naked, for sport and laughter striking those they meet with shaggy thongs. And many women of rank also purposely get in their way, and like children at school present their hands to be struck, believing that the pregnant will thus be helped in delivery, and the barren to pregnancy. The word Lupercalia comes from lupus, or wolf, so the holiday may be connected with the legendary wolf that suckled Romulus and Remus. Priests of this cult, luperci would travel to the lupercal, the cave where the she-wolf who reared Romulus and Remus allegedly lived, and sacrifice animals (two goats and a dog). The blood would then be scattered in the streets, to bring fertility and keep the wolves away from the fields. Lupercalia was a festival local to the city of Rome. The more general Festival of Juno Februa, meaning "Juno the purifier "or "the chaste Juno," was celebrated on February 13-14. Come to our camp and fly from Mount Olympus, home of Zeus and the other Olympian Gods to home of original Olympic Games under the Pegasus wings. The Greeks didn t have a Top Ten list of deities-but they did have the Top Twelve - those lucky deities living on top of Mount Olympus. Students will learn more about the twelve Gods, their myths and rituals and will participate in activities that relate to the Olympic Games! Pegasus, the winged steed, is the symbol of inspiration and well being. Να ενεργοποιήσουµε τις δηµιουργικές δυνάµεις των παιδιών Τα παιδιά επικοινωνούν µε τη γλώσσα της έκφρασης και δηµιουργίας. Τολµούν προσφέροντας πλήθος ερµηνειών, µε γοητευτικές αποδόσεις και µεταµορφώσεις πραγµατικών και φανταστικών στοιχείων δηµιουργώντας το εικαστικό τους όραµα. Οι εικόνες, όπως και οι λέξεις, αποτελούν αυτόνοµα συµβολικά συστήµατα µε τη δική τους γλώσσα, τη δική τους γραµµατική και σύνταξη. Ενώ όµως, ο χώρος της τέχνης ολοένα διευρύνεται και ολοένα περισσότερο οι τέχνες συνυπάρχουν και συνοµιλούν στο παγκόσµιο γίγνεσθαι, ενώ ο ρόλος της εικόνας αυξάνεται καθηµερινά και ενώ οι εικόνεςπου αποτελούν πια ένα νέο τρόπο επικοινωνίας- µας κατακλύζουν καθηµερινά, στην εκπαίδευση και στα αναλυτικά προγράµµατα η περιοχή αυτή αντιµετωπίζεται πολύ επιφανειακά. Πρέπει να γίνει κατανοητό ότι η γλώσσα της εικόνας και τα µηνύµατα που εκπέµπει, η πρόσληψη των µηνυµάτων αυτών, η ερµηνεία και η κριτική τους απαιτούν την ύπαρξη ενός οπτικού προγραµµατισµού. Τη στιγµή µάλιστα που ο καταιγισµός των εικόνων έχει γιγαντωθεί όσο ποτέ στο παρελθόν, πρέπει να θωρακίσουµε το παιδί µε τα απαραίτητα εργαλεία, έτσι ώστε να µπορεί να καταλήξει στη σωστή αποκωδικοποίηση, ερµηνεία, και κρίση των µηνυµάτων. Κύριος στόχος της εικαστικής παιδείας δεν είναι η δηµιουργία ζωγράφων ή καλλιτεχνών, ούτε η παραγωγή εικαστικών-διακοσµητικών έργων, ούτε η επαγγελµατική κατάρτιση µε τη στενή έννοια, αλλά η καλλιέργεια των αυριανών πολιτών-ολοκληρωµένων ανθρώπων, που εκτιµούν την εθνική αλλά και την παγκόσµια πολιτιστική κληρονοµιά, ανθρώπων που ζουν µε όλες τις αισθήσεις, απολαµβάνουν, βιώνουν και συµµετέχουν στη δηµιουργία πολιτισµού και είναι ενεργοί πολίτες που συµβάλλουν στη βελτίωση των συνθηκών διαβίωσης και κατανοούν και σέβονται τη διαφορετικότητα. Αξίζουν συγχαρητήρια οι εκπαιδευτικοί που αποδεικνύουν, µέσα από τη δουλειά των παιδιών τους, τη γνώση και την ικανότητά τους να παρεµβαίνουν διακριτικά, χωρίς να επηρεάζουν αρνητικά τον αυθορµητισµό και τον προσωπικό χαρακτήρα, την αυθεντικότητα και την µοναδικότητα κάθε παιδιού και ακόµη το σηµαντικό ρόλο που µπορεί και πρέπει να παίξει η εικαστική παιδεία. Stimulating the creative powers of the child Children communicate in the language of expression and creativity. Through their own interpretations of the world around them, they dare to transform what they see, combining the real and imaginary in their own vision. Just like words, images are autonomous symbolic systems, with their own language, grammar, and syntax. But while the arts are continually expanding in scope, playing an ever greater part in world events; while the role of the image increases every day and images as a new form of communication inundate our daily lives-in education, and in school curricula, the whole subject of the image is treated very superficially. We all need to understand that the language of the image and the messages it emits, the reception, interpretation and critique of these messages, all require the existence of special visual training. From the moment that we are subjected to a hail of images unparallel in the past, it becomes necessary to provide our children with the tools necessary to decode, interpret, and evaluate these visual messages. The main purpose of visual education is not the creation of artists or painters, or the production of works of art or decorative works, or vocational training in its narrow sense. It is instead the raising of fully-rounded citizens of tomorrow citizens who appreciate their national as well as the global cultural heritage, people who live through all their senses, who appreciate, experience and are involved in the creation of our culture, and as active citizens, help to improve the general quality of life and understand and respect those who are different. Congratulations are due to teachers who demonstrate through the work of their young charges their knowledge and ability to intervene discreetly, without fettering the spontaneity, authenticity and uniqueness of personality of each child. Χοιρινό µε ανανά Άλλο φρούτο, το γουρούνι! Pork with pineapple This pig is a hell of a fruit! Υλικά για 2 µερίδες: 800 γρ. χοιρινό 800 γρ. ανανά σε κονσέρβα 1 ποτήρι κρασιού ζωµό λαχανικών 1 κουτ. σούπας κορν φλάουρ 1 φύλλο δάφνης 2 γαρίφαλλα λίγο θυµάρι λίγο ελαιόλαδο αλάτι πιπέρι ιαδικασία Βάζουµε το κρέας πάνω σε µία πλαστική επιφάνεια κοπής, το κόβουµε σε µεγάλα κοµµάτια και το αλατοπιπερώνουµε. Ζεσταίνουµε το ελαιόλαδο σε µια κατσαρόλα και σοτάρουµε τα κοµµάτια που κόψαµε, µέχρι να ροδίσουν. Τα περιχύνουµε µε το σιρόπι ανανά, λίγο νεράκι και το ζωµό των λαχανικών και τα αρωµατίζουµε µε τα γαρίφαλλα, τη δάφνη, το θυµάρι. Βράζουµε για 50 λεπτά περίπου. Αν χρειαστεί, προσθέτουµε νερό. Στη συνέχεια, κόβουµε τις ροδέλες του ανανά σε τριγωνικά κοµµάτια και µόλις το κρέας βράσει, τα προσθέτουµε στο φαγητό µας. Σε ένα ποτηράκι παίρνουµε λίγο ζουµί από την κατσαρόλα, για να διαλύσουµε το κορν φλάουρ. Μόλις γίνει ένα µε το ζουµάκι το ρίχνουµε και αυτό µέσα στην κατσαρόλα και ανακατεύουµε. Αφήνουµε να βράσει το φαγητό για λίγα λεπτά ακόµη, µέχρι να δέσει η σάλτσα. Μόλις δέσει, λύνουµε τους καλεσµένους, τα ζυµανθρωπάκια, τους αρκούδους και τ' άλλα ξωτικά και τρώµε όλοι µαζί, το κρεατάκι µε τον ανανά. Ingredients for 2 portions: 800 g pok 800 g canned pineapple 1 wine-glass of vegetable broth 1 tbsp corn flour 1 bay leaf 2 cloves some thyme some olive oil salt pepper Procedure Put the meat onto plastic surface, cut it in big pieces and season with salt and pepper. Heat the olive oil in a casserole and sauté the pieces you've cut till they're slightly brown. Pour them with the pineapple syrup, some water and the vegetable broth and aromatize with cloves, bay leaf and thyme. Boil for 50 minutes. If needed, add water. Then cut the pineapple rings in triangles and once the meat has boiled, add them into the dish. In a glass put some broth from the casserole, to dilute the corn flour. When it's smooth, put it into the casserole and stir. Let the dish simmer for some more minutes, till the sauce is thick. Then call all your guests (dough men, bears and other freaks) and eat all together meat with pineapple. Bon appetite! Καλή µας όρεξη!

Σε τρεις µανέζ ολυµπιακών διαστάσεων και µε την υποστήριξη εξειδικευµένων εκπαιδευτών οι επισκέπτες του ράντζου µπορούν να µυηθούν στην ιππασία ή να ακολουθήσουν διαδροµές ιπποτουρισµού στο δάσος. Όσοι πάλι το προτιµούν, έχουν τη δυνατότητα να ανεβούν για βόλτα σε µια από τις δέκα άµαξες. Στο ράντσο οργανώνονται προγράµµατα για σχολεία, εταιρείες καθώς και πρόγραµµα κατασκηνώσεων. Στις ξύλινες κατασκευές του, οι οποίες είναι χτισµένες σύµφωνα µε τα πρότυπα της Άγριας ύσης, µπορούν να φιλοξενηθούν οι επισκέπτες ενώ η τραπεζαρία χωρητικότητας 1200 ατόµων προσφέρεται για ένα υπέροχο πρωινό ή γεύµα. A Ranch in Sofiko, Corinth A ranch dedicated to sports and nature is located in the beautiful pine tree forest of Sofiko, Corinth, just 97km from Athens! It covers an area of 80 acres and includes football pitches, basketball, volleyball and tennis courts, roller skating rinks and swimming pools. Apart from those, visitors can also try archery, fencing and climbing. However, horseback riding is at the forefront. Three Olympic standard courses are located within the complex, while experienced trainers provide assistance to visitors. Others may opt for a ride in one of the ranch s ten coaches. Furthermore, the ranch organizes programs for schools and companies, while it also hosts camps. Its wooden buildings remind tourists of the Wild West, while the dining hall can host up to 1200 people. Ο "Μουτζούρης" - Το τρενάκι του Πηλίου. Πρόκειται για µία λιλιπούτεια (πλάτους 0.60µ.) γραµµή τρένου µε αφετηρία το Βόλο, τέρµα στις Μηλιές (28χλµ. απόσταση) και ενδιάµεσους σταθµούς στα σηµαντικότερα χωριά του Πηλίου, η οποία περνάει µέσα από γέφυρες, σήραγγες και αναλήµµατα σε ένα πλούσιο φυσικό περιβάλλον. Οι σταθµοί παρουσιάζουν µεγάλο Αρχιτεκτονικό ενδιαφέρον και το τροχαίο υλικό (που διατηρείται σε άριστη κατάσταση µέχρι σήµερα) είναι µοναδικό για την Ελλάδα. Η κατασκευή της γραµµής άρχισε το 1881. Το πρώτο κοµµάτι από Βόλο ως τα Λεχώνια παραδόθηκε το 1896 και το υπόλοιπο µέχρι Μηλιές το 1903. Το 1900, ο «Μουτζούρης» ήταν το µοναδικό µέσο για να ανέβει κάποιος στο Πήλιο. Μελετητής και κατασκευαστής του έργου ήταν ο Ιταλός µηχανικός Ερνέστο ντε Κίρικο, πατέρας του διάσηµου ζωγράφου Τζιόρτζιο ντε Κίρικο. Η λειτουργία του συνέβαλε αποφασιστικά στην ανάπτυξη των γύρω οικισµών και συνεχίστηκε µέχρι το 1971. Το τρενάκι σταµάτησε να λειτουργεί για 25 χρόνια και επαναλειτούργησε πριν από 9 χρόνια. Προηγουµένως, χρειάστηκε επισκευή του τροχαίου υλικού καθώς και συντήρηση στις γραµµές και τις κτιριακές εγκαταστάσεις. Το 1985 κηρύχτηκε ως ιστορικό διατηρητέο µνηµείο. Ονοµάζεται «Μουτζούρης» επειδή τα παλιότερα χρόνια λειτουργούσε µε ατµό. Σήµερα το µόνο που έχει αντικατασταθεί είναι η ατµοµηχανή του µε ντίζελ- µηχανή, ενώ δεν έχουν τροποποιηθεί ούτε ο συρµός ούτε η σιδηροδροµική γραµµή. Moutzouris Pilio's Chuchu Train It is a very small railway line (60cm in width), starting from Volos and ending in Milies (28km distance) with interim stops at some of Pilio s most popular villages. It crosses bridges and tunnels, while passengers can marvel at the beautiful natural scenery. The stations are very quaint and the materials used on the train, which is in mint condition, are unique in Greece. Construction started in 1881. The first part, from Volos to Lechonia, was completed in 1896, while the rest, to Milies, in 1903. In 1900, Moutzouris was the only means of transport to reach Pilio. The designer and constructor was Italian engineer Ernesto de Kiriko, father of the famous painter Georgio de Kiriko. The train contributed to a great degree to the development of the surrounding settlements up until 1971. The choo choo train then stopped operating for 25 years. It opened again to the public nine years ago, as the line, the train and the facilities had to be repaired and restored. In 1985 it was declared a listed monument. It is known as "Moutzouris" (black from the smoke), as it used to be a steam engine in the olden days. The only difference today is that it operates on diesel fuel.
