GREEK CULTURAL FESTIVAL 2011
Dear Parishioners of our Beloved Assumption, For months we all anticipated the Greek Cultural Festival. We worried about the weather - rightfully so, given our past few years. There were a few moments where the threat of rain was upon us, but glory be to God, He protected us from the threat. As we offer our personal daily prayers, let us each take a moment and thank Him for His providence. Thank you to the volunteers who came and offered their time - especially to those who are not parishioners of our church and in many cases not even Orthodox. This is an indication of their love of our event. Thank you to the chairpersons and to the few of you who spent many hours organizing and fundraising for the Fest. Your hard work was not in vain and it truly did not go unnoticed. As we now look forward, we have a very special event to prepare for. On Sunday, August 21 st, His Grace Bishop Demetrios will be with us for the Divine Liturgy, the dedication of the Godparent plaque in the Church and for a formal luncheon in honor of the Godparents. We will have the opportunity to once again celebrate the consecration of our church and to recall the many blessings of that most blessed day. Let us make August 21 st not only a priority in our schedules but also a celebration of our Assumption family. There will be a blessing of the Plaque commemorating the Godparents of the Parish and the Consecration and 90 th Anniversary Album will be available to be distributed to those who preordered. RSVP to the Church by July 21 st so we can make reservations & then show up. SACRAMENTS A formal lunch will follow in honor of our Godparents. On Saturday, May 28 th, the Servant of God Gregorios (Enzo) was Baptized at the Assumption Church. Proud parents are Nicholas and Daryn Passini. His Godparent is Lambros Fotos. On Sunday, May 29 th, the Handmaiden of God Eleni was Baptized at the Assumption Church. Proud parents are Michael and Elizabeth Gorman. Her Godparent is John Haney. On May 19 th, the Handmaiden of God Sophia Mihalopoulos was given an Orthodox Funeral and Burial from the Assumption Church. May Her Memory Be Eternal. On June 13 th, the Handmaiden of God Sophia Kollias was given an Orthodox Funeral and Burial from the Assumption Church. May Her Memory Be Eternal.
ST. KYRIKOS Celebrated July 15 th The Holy Martyr Julitta and her three year old son Kyrikos were from the city of Iconium (now Konia) in central Asia Minor. They lived during the reign of Diocletian (284-305). In the year 296, Julitta, who was a descendant of royalty and was quite wealthy, fled with Kyrikos from their estate leaving all behind except two handmaidens. Their journey to flee the persecutions led them to the city of Tarsus, a city in southeast Asia Minor that is most known for being the birthplace of the Apostle Paul. The city of Tarsus was governed by Alexander who was especially brutal in the persecution of the Christians. Julitta and Kyrikos were seized, Kyrikos was taken from his mother and Alexander s men began to beat Julitta. Although the handmaidens had escaped capture, they remained to witness the entire account. Kyrikos was a child that was pure and innocent and seemed to be admired by all who came in contact with him. Julitta had taught him as much as he could understand at his young age about the Faith and taught him how to pray. He displayed great obedience and an understanding that surpassed his young age. As Julitta was being beaten, Alexander attempted to hold Kyrikos and to win his affection. Kyrikos, though, continued to struggle to get to his mother. He fought to be released and even scratched the governor, Alexander. Finally, Kyrikos yelled that he was a Christian and that he loved Christ and he kicked Alexander in the stomach with all his might. The governor, now in pain, became very angry at Kyrikos and his declaration. He took the young boy and threw him down the stone steps that led to the judgment seat. Kyrikos head struck the steps repeatedly leaving a trail of blood with his head crushed. Seeing his dead body at the base of the steps, Julitta realized her son had received the crown of martyrdom. Her son was now in the arms of Christ, and Alexander would not have the opportunity to pervert his innocence. The persecution continued for Julitta, but she would not succumb to the many tortures. She was stripped and placed on a rack while her flesh was ripped with iron claws. Eventually, when Alexander realized she would not surrender her faith, he had her beheaded and had her body and that of Kyrikos taken outside of the city to be left for the wild animals to eat. However, the two handmaidens who had witnessed the entire event went and collected the bodies and buried them. Many years later, under Constantine the Great, the first Christian emperor, one of the handmaidens revealed the location of the grave. Their Relics were uncovered and found to be fragrant and incorrupt. Many who visited their tombs and asked for their intercessions witnessed miracles of healing.
ST. MARY MAGDALENE Myrrhbearer and Equal to the Apostles Celebrated July 22 nd Saint Mary was from Magdala in Galilee on the Sea of Tiberias, and for this was named Magdalene. When the Lord Jesus cast out seven demons from her, from which she had been suffering, she became His faithful and inseparable disciple, following Him and ministering unto Him even to the time of His crucifixion and burial. Then, returning to Jerusalem together with the rest of the Myrrh-bearers, she prepared the fragrant spices for anointing the body of the Lord. And on the Lord's day they came very early to the tomb, even before the Angels appeared declaring the Resurrection of the Lord. When Mary Magdalene saw the stone taken away from the tomb, she ran and proclaimed it to Peter and John. And returning immediately to the tomb and weeping outside, she was deemed worthy to be the first of the Myrrh-bearers to behold the Lord arisen from the dead, and when she fell at His feet, she heard Him say, "Touch Me not." After the Lord's Ascension, nothing certain is known concerning her. Some accounts say that she went to Rome and later returned to Jerusalem, and from there proceeded to Ephesus, where she ended her life, preaching Christ. Although it is sometimes said that Saint Mary Magdalene was the "sinful woman" of the Gospel, this is nowhere stated in the tradition of the Church, in the sacred hymnology, or in the Holy Gospels themselves, which say only that our Lord cast seven demons out of her, not that she was a fallen woman. "Madeleine" is a form of Magdalene.
DORMITION OF ST. ANNA ST. PARASKEVI The Mother of the Theotokos Celebrated July 25 According to tradition, Anna, the ancestor of God, lived for sixtynine years, and her spouse Joachim, for eighty; according to one account, Saint Joachim died two years before Saint Anna. The Theotokos had been orphaned of both her parents already when she was eleven years of age, when she was living in the Temple. Saint Anna is invoked for conceiving children, and for help in difficult childbirth. Celebrated July 26th Saint Paraskevi was born on a Friday (in Greek, Paraskevi), and was given this name, w h i c h m eans " p r e p a r a t i o n " o r "preparedness" (see Matt. 27:62, Mark 15:42, Luke 23:54, and John 19:31, where 'Friday' is called "the day of the preparation"). From childhood she was instructed in the sacred letters and devoted herself to the study of the divine Scriptures, while leading a monastic life and guiding many to the Faith of Christ. During the reign of the Emperor Antoninus Pius, she was apprehended because she was a Christian and was urged to worship the idols, but she answered with the words of Jeremias: "Let the gods that have not made heaven and the earth perish from off the earth" (Jer. 10:11). Because of this she endured exceedingly painful torments, and was beheaded in the year 140. The faithful pray to her for the healing of eye ailments.
ST. PANTELEIMON Celebrated July 27 th This Saint, who had Nicomedia as his homeland, was the son of Eustorgius and Eubula. His father was an idolater, but his mother was a Christian from her ancestors. It was through her that he was instructed in piety, and still later, he was catechized in the Faith of Christ by Saint Hermolaus (see July 26) and baptized by him. Being proficient in the physician's vocation, he practiced it in a philanthropic manner, healing every illness more by the grace of Christ than by medicines. Thus, although his parents had named him Pantoleon ("in all things a lion"), because of the compassion he showed for the souls and bodies of all, he was worthily renamed Panteleimon, meaning "all-merciful." On one occasion, when he restored the sight of a certain blind man by calling on the Divine Name, he enlightened also the eyes of this man's soul to the knowledge of the truth. This also became the cause for the martyrdom of him who had been blind, since when he was asked by whom and in what manner his eyes had been opened, in imitation of that blind man of the Gospel he confessed with boldness both who the physician was and the manner of his healing. For this he was put to death immediately. Panteleimon was arrested also, and having endured many wounds, he was finally beheaded in the year 305, during the reign of Maximian. Saint Panteleimon is one of the Holy Unmercenaries, and is held in special honor among them, even as Saint George is among the Martyrs.

PARISH COUNCIL MINUTES Parish Council Meeting Minutes May 20, 2011 Call to Order John Thodos called the meeting to order at 6:45 P.M. and Fr. Jon led the group in prayer. Roll Call Present: John Thodos, Biju Ninan, Deno Kandis, Diane Lamacki, Celia Lubbers, Abraham Chirackal, Nick Passini, Cathy Diakogeorgiou, Mike Haney and Liz Gorman Excused: Lambros Mihalopoulos, and Roger Lovejoy Festival Report: provided by Matthew Miller. Representative from AAA Rental was present. He proposed that for the main 40 x 100 tent there needs to be three barrels for every place a stake is needed. He will use foot plates under every pole and assure every pole and cross member are pinned properly together. He would start setup on Wednesday and finish Thursday takedown would be on Monday. The church would have to have security Wednesday through Sunday. AAA Rental will match last years fee for tents (from A1). He asks that we display the AAA banner. AAA will not raise rates except if gas or pay increases. They do want to drill 12-14 holes for the main tent. They will fill and plug each hole after the tents are taken down. Need more volunteers for the festival. Celia gave Matt the name of a person who is willing to be in charge of cleanup. President s Report Furnace Furnace up and running had problems with noise and vibration - contractor will put more cushioning under the furnace. Hot water heater in the altar is working just needed adjustment. Grass was cut in time for the funeral. Have three bids ranging from $135 to $155 per mowing. Awaiting a bid from Chris Theofilis. John Thodos will email everyone the bid when it comes in so a decision can be made. Priest s Report Email blasts there are 116 on the list for the bulletin - will add obituaries to the blasts.
PARISH COUNCIL MINUTES New Agape News format - Diane L. did a nice job on the art work. Church Softball need a coach Nick P. thinks he has someone who can do this. Lights Fred Waller provided an estimate for replacing fixtures in the hall, choir loft, and classrooms - $13k. Lights in front of the church were fixed. Would like 7 more up-lights on the building and 2 more shining on the landscape. Would cost $1,600. Mike Haney made a motion to approve purchase of lighting. Seconded by Nick Passini approved. Evangelism sent out 1,500 postcards inviting people to Holy Week services. Had 7 guests, more than expected. Wants to build on this by having an English service once a month and having a pancake breakfast after church. Fr. Jon would also like to order book on Orthodoxy. Motion made by Mike Haney to OK buying 36 books (2 cases) out of festival funds. Seconded by John Thodos carried. Minutes Minutes for April 2011 were reviewed and approved as submitted. Treasurer s Report Nick P. will do payroll to take advantage of a federal tax credit for the church and decrease the health care expenses. Have $1,700 in checking account. Need to transfer $5,000 from the foundation fund checking account. Old Business Celia L. reported that the church ceiling repair and painting is planned to start on the 20 th of June. Keith Curry looked at the portico and agreed with Tom Bakeris the structure is sound just need to reseal edging of roof then the ceiling can be repaired. New Business Hall requests two received 1. Gormans for baptism May 29 council approved. 2. Olveras for anniversary July 30 council approved. Motion to adjourn by Abraham C. 2 nd by Mike Haney. Meeting adjourned at 8:40 PM
Οἱ Ἅγιοι Κήρυκος καὶ Ἰουλίττα Οἱ Ἅγιοι Κήρυκος καὶ Ἰουλίττα 15 Ιουλίου Ἡ Ἁγία Ἰουλίτα, ἔζησε κατὰ τὴν ἐποχὴ τοῦ αὐτοκράτορα Διοκλητιανοῦ. Καταγόταν ἀπὸ τὸ Ἰκόνιο τῆς Μικρᾶς Ἀσίας. Ἐπειδὴ ὅμως τότε κυριαρχοῦσε ὁ διωγμὸς κατὰ τῶν χριστιανῶν, πῆρε τὸν γιὸ της τὸν Κήρυκο καὶ πῆγε στὴν Σελεύκεια καὶ στὴν συνέχεια στὴν Ταρσό. Ἀλλὰ καὶ ἐκεῖ συνάντησε τὴν ἴδια κατάσταση. Στὴν Ταρσὸ συνελήφθη ἀπὸ τὸν ἡγεμόνα,τὸν Ἀλέξανδρο, ὁ ὁποῖος τὴν ὑπέβαλε σὲ φρικτὰ βασανιστήρια μπροστὰ στὸ παιδί της. Στὴν συνέχεια προσπάθησε νὰ φέρει μὲ τὸ μέρος του τὸν μικρό. Τὸ παιδάκι ὅμως δὲν δεχόταν καὶ μάλιστα ἀφοῦ ἐπικαλέστηκε τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ Χριστοῦ, ἔδωσε μία δυνατὴ κλωτσιὰ στὴν κοιλιὰ τοῦ ἡγεμόνα. Αὐτὸς ἐξοργίστηκε τόσο ποὺ τὸ πέταξε ἀπὸ τὰ σκαλιὰ σπάζοντας τὸ κρανίο τοῦ μικροῦ Κήρυκου. Μ' αὐτὸν τὸν τρόπο ἔλαβε τὸ στεφάνι τοῦ μαρτυρίου ὁ μικρὸς Κήρυκος. Ἡ δὲ μητέρα του μετὰ ἀπὸ λίγο, ἀφοῦ ὑπεβλήθη σὲ πολλὰ καὶ φρικτὰ βασανιστήρια, παρέδωσε τὸ πνεῦμα της στὸν Χριστό. Ἡ Ἁγία Μαρία ἡ Μαγδαληνή ἡ μυροφόρος καὶ Ἰσαπόστολος 22 Ιουλίου Ἡ Ἁγία μυροφόρος καὶ Ἰσαπόστολος Μαρία ἡ Μαγδαληνή, καταγόταν ἀπὸ τὰ Μάγδαλα. Ὅταν πληροφορήθηκε γιὰ τὸν Χριστό, πῆγε κοντά του καὶ ἀπαλλάχθηκε ἀπὸ τὰ δαιμόνια ποὺ τὴν ἐνοχλοῦσαν καὶ στὴν συνέχεια ἔγινε μαθήτρια του. Ἡ Μαρία ἡ Μαγδαληνή, ἀκολούθησε τὸν Χριστὸ ἕως τὸ πάθος Του, ἔγινε μυροφόρος, εἶδε πρώτη τὴν Ἀνάσταση, ὅταν ἀργὰ τὴν νύχτα τοῦ Σαββάτου εἶδε τὸν ἄγγελο ποὺ κύλησε τὴν πέτρα ἀπὸ τὴν θύρα τοῦ μνημείου. Ἐπίσης μόλις ξημέρωσε, ἐνῶ στέκονταν κοντὰ στὸ μνημεῖο, εἶδε δύο ἀγγέλους μὲ λευκὰ νὰ κάθονται στὸ μνημεῖο καὶ μετὰ εἶδε τὸν Χριστό, ὁ ὁποῖος μάλιστα ἐπειδὴ τὸν πέρασε γιὰ τὸν κηπουρό, τῆς εἶπε «Μή μου ἅπτου» (μὴν μὲ ἀγγίζεις). Μετὰ τὴν ἀνάληψη τοῦ Κυρίου, ἡ Μαρία πῆγε στὴν Ἔφεσο στὸν ἀπόστολο καὶ εὐαγγελιστὴ Ἰωάννη. Ἐκεῖ ἐκοιμήθη καὶ ἐνταφιάστηκε.
Μεγαλομάρτυς Παντελεήμων Ο Άγιος ΠΑΝΤΕΛΕΗΜΩΝ ο Μεγαλομάρτυς και Ιαματικός 27 Ιουλίου Έ ζ ησε στα χ ρόνια τ ου αυτοκράτορα Διοκλητιανού και καταγόταν απο τη Νικομήδεια. Τον πατέρα του έλεγαν Ευστόργιο και τη μητέρα του, που ήταν ευσεβέστατη χριστιανή, Ευβούλη. Ο Παντελεήμων γρήγορα στερήθηκε τις φροντίδες της μητέρας του, διότι πέθανε πρόωρα. Αλλά ο Θεός τον αξίωσε να διδαχθεί τη χριστιανική πίστη απο ένα διακεκριμένο λειτουργικό της Εκκλησίας, τον Ιερέα Ερμόλαο. Τότε ο Παντελεήμων, είχε τελειώσει τις ιατρικές του σπουδές, κοντά στο φημισμένο γιατρό Ευφρόσυνο. Την επιστήμη του χρησιμοποίησε ιδιαίτερα για τους απόρους ασθενείς και έτρεχε με μοναδική προθυμία στις καλύβες τους, βοηθώντας τους όχι μόνο ιατρικά, αλλά και χρηματικά. Σε κάθε σπίτι που έμπαινε δίδασκε το Ευαγγέλιο και έφερνε σ αυτό πολλές ψυχές. Ήταν ευσπλαγχνικός σε ακρότατο βαθμό για όλους τους πάσχοντες, γι αυτό και ο Θεός του δώρησε το χάρισμα να θεραπεύει ασθενείς με μόνη την προσευχή του. Έτσι θεράπευσε πολλούς, μεταξύ αυτών και ένα τυφλό, που έγινε αφορμή να συλλάβει ο Διοκλητιανός και τον Άγιο. Τον τυφλό τον θανάτωσε διότι πίστεψε στο Χριστό και τον Παντελεήμονα υπέβαλε σε φρικτά βασανιστήρια, ώσπου στο τέλος τον αποκεφάλισε. Ο Παντελεήμων, όμως, ανήκει σ αυτούς, για τους οποίους ο Κύριος είπε: "μακάριοι οι ελεήμονες, ότι αυτοί ελεηθήσονται". Μακάριοι, δηλαδή, είναι, οι ευσπλαγχνικοί που συμπονούν στη δυστυχία του πλησίον, διότι αυτοί θα ελεηθούν απο το Θεό την ημέρα της Κρίσεως.
