Reading #1 5 10 15 20 25 When the year 2000 began, American TV stations showed pictures of the Great Pyramids of Egypt, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Times Square in New York City, and a sign that was once used to help sell land and houses in a city in California. The name of that city is known around the world, and so is the famous sign that spells its name in large capital letters: HOLLYWOOD. Why is the sign so famous? One reason is its size: the letters are each 45 feet tall (about 15 meters). Another is its position near the top of a mountain (Mount Lee). It can be seen for miles around. Now, thanks to NASA, a picture of the sign that was taken last summer from high above the Earth can be found on the Internet. If you want to see the sign in real time, you can go to the sign s website and take a look from a security camera. The cameras are always on. When it s morning in Greece, it s still night in California, but the sign is lit by strong spotlights all night long, so you won t be disappointed. One of the cameras is pointed up at the sign and the mountain top, but another is located behind the sign and sees what the sign sees. It s hard to imagine, but one hundred years ago the only stars in Hollywood were those in the night sky. In those days there were orange trees and farms. The weather was good, sunny and dry, perfect for making movies outdoors. Land was cheap, and the big buildings on some of those farms were used to make the first movies. Those first movies were made without sound, but so many people wanted to see them that new movie theaters opened in almost every American town. Actors like Charlie Chaplin, who arrived in Hollywood in 1913 from London, helped make Hollywood itself a star. A star needs his (or her) name on their door, and Hollywood s was already there on the mountainside. The sign soon began to become famous itself. Visitors to Hollywood always took pictures of it. The letters of the sign are not exactly the same ones that were first placed there, however. One or another of them has fallen down more than once, and someone once started a fire and burned the H to the ground. Now the sign is behind a fence and gets special care from the town of Hollywood, which pays to keep it freshly painted. The sign means different things to different people, but dreams, money, and adventure are probably what the world thought of on that first day of the year 2000.

101. Which one of the following is true? A) The sign has remained the same for almost 100 years. B) When you can see the stars, you can t see the sign. C) People have to pay to take pictures of the sign. D) The town where the sign was built takes care of the sign. 102. The phrase in real time (line 10) means: A) at night B) with a camera C) now, at this moment D) on the Internet 103. What does the sign see (line 14)? A) farms and orange trees B) letters as tall as a house C) the top of Mount Lee D) the land and houses it helped sell 104. What two things are mentioned (αναφέρονται) in the third paragraph as reasons for the start of movie-making in Hollywood? A) the Hollywood sign and Charlie Chaplin B) not much rain and good buildings to work in C) lots of sunshine and the famous Hollywood sign D) land didn t cost much and the stars could be seen at night 105. What would make the best title for this text (κείµενο)? A) The Sign That is Also a Star B) Hollywood in the Year 2000 C) Everybody Comes to Hollywood D) California Dreaming

Reading #2 5 It was evening. Over the silent lake a full moon slowly came up. A little later it was surrounded by shining stars. The plants that grew in the lake threw their shadows on the still water and the large round leaves that floated on it. On each one slept a green frog. Suddenly, one of the thick green leaves rose up off the water carrying its sleeping frog into the air. The frog opened its enormous eyes in surprise. Another leaf left the water. One after the other the frogs woke up and looked at each other. Soon the night sky was filled with green frogs flying away together on their small magic carpets. 10 15 20 25 30 Before midnight the frogs had reached the town. Dressed in his pyjamas, Ben was sitting at the kitchen table having a snack. He was just going to take another bite of his sandwich when he stopped. Outside the window frogs were happily flying past on their leaves. Ben thought that was very strange, but he was tired, and he decided to go to sleep. The frogs continued their ride through the town. Some of them turned dangerously just for fun. Others traveled carefully but got caught in the clothes that were hanging out to dry in the back of some people s houses. One of them flew off wearing a baby s hat! Old Mrs. Smithson had fallen asleep in a comfortable armchair in front of the television. Through the open window of her living room and down the chimney came the frogs. Some of them stopped moving and stayed to watch the program that was on. In the park across the street a horrible dog began to run after a frog on a leaf, but soon the frightened dog was running in the opposite direction followed by an army of flying frogs. When the sun began to come up, the leaves stopped floating in the air. Frogs and leaves fell to the ground or landed on the roofs of houses. The only way for the frogs to return home was to go jumping along the country roads that went to the lake. How lovely it would be to get wet again and go looking for insects or climb onto the leaves and enjoy the warm sun! Meanwhile, in the town, police dogs and detectives were looking at the large round leaves that were everywhere. No one could guess where they had come from. In the morning some reporters arrived to talk to the police in the street. Ben saw them outside his house. Perhaps someone would believe him if he described what he had seen before he went to sleep. Ben went out. Excuse me, he said. Then he pointed down the street and started talking about the flying frogs.
