Τρία είναι τα θέματα που εστιάζουμε την προσπάθειά μας: η ανακύκλωση και κομποστοποίηση, η εξοικονόμηση ενέργειας και χρήση ανανεώσιμων πηγών ενέργειας και η βιοκλιματική αρχιτεκτονική και οικολογική δόμηση. Γιατί δημιουργήθηκε η ECOWEEK? Η ECOWEEK δημιουργήθηκε από την ανάγκη παρέμβασης στο κενό πληροφόρησης σε θέματα περιβάλλοντος, ανυπαρξίας ανακύκλωσης απορριμμάτων και της ανεξέλεγκτης οικοδόμησης συμβατικών και ελειπώς μονωμένων κτιρίων και της υπερκατανάλωσης ενέργειας παραγόμενης από ορυκτά καύσιμα. Ποια είναι η μέχρι τώρα πορεία της; Η ECOWEEK ξεκίνησε στην Αίγινα το 2005. Το 2007 πραγματοποίησε εκδηλώσεις σε όλη την Ελλάδα και κάλεσε τον Al Gore και τον εξερευνητή Robert Swan να μιλήσουν στην Αθήνα με το Megaron Plus και το British Council αντίστοιχα. Το 2008 διοργάνωσε Εβδομάδα Οικολογίας με τον Δήμο Λάρνακας στην Κύπρο και διεθνές συνέδριο στην Αθήνα για την οικολογική δόμηση με το ΑΙΑ Continental Europe υπό την αιγίδα του Υπουργείου Εξωτερικών και του Δήμου Αθηναίων. Κeynote ομιλητές ήταν ο αρχιτέκτονας Ken Yeang και η σχεδιάστρια τοπίου Julie Bargmann. Το 2009 συνεχίζει το πρόγραμμα περιβαλλοντικής ενημέρωσης στα σχολεία στην Ελλάδα και την Κύπρο, πραγματοποιεί διεθνές συνέδριο για νέους και προγραμματίζει δράση και σε άλλες χώρες. Ποιός είναι ο στόχος της ECOWEEK; Να φέρει το μήνυμα ευαισθητοποίησης για τις κλιματικές αλλαγές και την καταστροφή του περιβάλλοντος σε όσο το δυνατόν περισσότερο κόσμο. A few words about ECOWEEK ECOWEEK is an international non-governmental organization (NGO). Its mission is to raise public environmental awareness and involvement of the public and especially young people, in environmental protection and the adoption of simple daily habits like household waste recycling, organic waste composting, energy conservation and green building and to undertake activities and initiatives that promote the principles of Worth-Living Itegrated Development. ECOWEEK was established on the island of Aegina, Greece in 2005, and is active today in Greece, Cyrpus and other countries. Because habits change, climate change! 2 3

ΝΤΟΡΑ ΜΠΑΚΟΓΙΑΝΝΗ Υπουργός Εξωτερικών Φίλες και Φίλοι Το συνέδριο «Ενδυνάμωση Νέων: Οικολογία + Ηγεσία + Αρχιτεκτονική», στο πλαίσιο της Ecoweek 2009, είναι ένα διαλογικό και δημιουργικό σημείο συνάντησης της πρόκλησης της κλιματικής αλλαγής, της ελπίδας της νέας γενιάς και της πραγματικότητας της επιστήμης. Η υποβάθμιση του περιβάλλοντος και η κλιματική αλλαγή συνιστούν μια από τις μεγαλύτερες προκλήσεις των καιρών μας. Η νέα γενιά είναι αυτή που καλείται, σε μεγάλο βαθμό, να ζήσει αλλά και να βρει άμεσες λύσεις στο πρόβλημα. Η αρχιτεκτονική και, ειδικότερα, η οικολογική δόμηση συνιστούν δυναμικά επιστημονικά πεδία προς αυτή την κατεύθυνση, με πρακτικές εφαρμογές στην καθημερινότητα του πολίτη: σε μελλοντικούς χώρους και κτίρια αλλά και υπάρχουσες δομές. Ίσως μάλιστα αυτό να είναι και το πλέον δυναμικό και παρηγορητικό στοιχείο στη σχέση αρχιτεκτονικής και οικολογίας. Το γεγονός δηλαδή ότι, αν και σε μεγάλο βαθμό, ο καταπονημένος πλανήτης μας έχει ήδη διαμορφωθεί -με έναν τρόπο όχι πολύ φιλικό στον άνθρωπο και το περιβάλλον- ακόμα και μικρής κλίμακας επεμβάσεις όχι μόνο να είναι εφικτές αλλά να φέρουν και αποτελέσματα. Από την άλλη, οι πολίτες αλλάζουν νοοτροπίες και στάσεις όταν συνειδητοποιούν οφέλη στο πρακτικό επίπεδο. Η βελτίωση της ποιότητας ζωής και του περιβάλλοντος -που έχει ως αποτέλεσμα η οικολογική δόμηση- μπορεί να είναι μετρήσιμη, απτή και αντιληπτή από τον καθένα. Ντόρα Μπακογιάννη Υπουργός Εξωτερικών DORA BAKOYANNIS Greek Minister for Foreign Affairs Dear Friends The International Conference Empowering Youth: Ecology + Leadership + Architecture, in the framework of Ecoweek 2009, is a dialogic as well as creative meeting point for the challenge of climate change, the hope of youth and the truth of science. Climate change together with environmental degradation is one of the greatest challenges of our time. Young people are those who will have to live with and find imminent solutions to the problem. Architecture and in particular green buildings are fields of studies with full potential in this respect thanks to their numerous practical applications in peoples daily lives: in future spaces and buildings as well as already existing structures. This might be the most powerful element in the interplay between architecture and ecology, bringing much needed consolation. Even though a great part of our worn out planet has already been shaped -in a rather unfriendly way towards both man and the environment- small scale interventions are still possible and able to produce results. In addition, citizens tend to change their mentalities and attitudes when they realize the benefits of doing so in practical terms. Improving both our quality of life and the environment, as a result of applying green building strategies, may be seen, understood and measured by anyone. The massive use and application of such strategies, that appear today to be imposed by the EU or others, might finally come from within us, as a conscious choice, resulting in the establishment of a new relationship between citizens and the environment. ECOWEEK & Green Buildings Buildings consume 40% of produced energy and contribute to the emissions of greenhouse gases to the Earth s atmosphere, causing Global Warming and Climate Change, with disastrous results to the Earth s ecosystems. Building practice today has failed, producing too much waste and consuming too much energy. The European Directive 2002/91 for the Energy Performance of Buildings is finally implemented throughout Europe, and other international tools, such as LEED are maturing. ECOWEEK has undertaken in the past two years, to raise awareness among professionals, architects, engineers and students of Architecture, by offering tools and opportunity to learn from the professionals in the field the principles of green architecture and sustainable planning and landscape design. ECOWEEK 2008 & AIACE: Athens: Ecology + Environment + Architecture International Conference Zappeion, Athens, April 10-14, 2009 Within the framework of ECOWEEK 2008 activities and in order to better inform Greek architects of the European Directive 2002/91 on energy performance of buildings that entered into effect on 4/1/2009, ECOWEEK organized an international architecture conference in Athens on ecological building. The conference was organized with the American Institute of Architects Continental Europe (AIACE) with the participation and support of the Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE) and the UIA-ARES, under the auspices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Greece and the City of Athens, and the participation of the British Council, the Royal Danish Embassy and the Danish Architectural Center. Architects from around the world participated to the conference. Keynote speakers architect Ken Yeang presented his principles for green skyscraper design, Julie Bargmann (DIRT Studio) presented innovative projects in building regenerative landscapes, and architect Alexandros Tombazis spoke passive solar architecture and presented his recent award winning projects. BioRegional director Benjamin Gill presented BedZed zeroemissions neighbourhood in London and other One Planet Living projects, a lecture supported by the British Council. Director Jacques Allard presented his documentary Last Call for Planet Earth at the premiere in Athens, followed by a panel of architects, landscape architects, professors of Architecture schools and professionals from Greece and abroad. ECOWEEK 2009: Empowering Youth: Ecology + Leadership + Architecture International Conference Athinais, Athens, March 31 - April 6, 2009 Young people form a vision for the future in ECOWEEK 2009 international conference and workshops in Athens. For the first time in Greece, young architects, students and professionals, learn side by side famous architects and engineers from Greece and around the world, the principles of ecological building and sustainable design. The interdisciplinary workshops will suggest sustainable solutions for the former site of the international airport of Athens in Hellenikon, an important site for the city of Athens. The groups will not attempt to repeat the international competition on the site; neither give tips to improve the official plans for the site; neither will attempt to impose architectural symbols and schemes from abroad. The workshops will rather attempt to re-approach this important site for Athens and the residents of the metropolitan city, based on ecology, locality, community and sustainability. For example, when we speak about developing the site into housing units, these units will have to be of zero-emissions, zero-waste and based solely on renewable energy. When we speak about a metropolitan park, we take into consideration the re-use (onsite) of the construction debris that will result in demolishing all or part of the airport facilities - as Julie Bargmann puts it: no waste leaves the site. The workshop participants are divided up into three groups (with possible variations). Each group produces a proposal based on the principles described above, each dealing with a different alternative of the ecological development of the former airport site: (a) A Metropolitan park of zero waste and zero debris leaving the site of the park (b) A residential neighborhood of zero-emissions and zero-waste, and (c) A combination of the two. Ivan Harbour Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners (former Richard Rogers Partnership) Ivan Harbour a partner of Sir Richard Rogers, joined the Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners in 1985 and was made a Director in 1993. He is currently Design Director of a number of prestigious architecture and master planning projects around the world including the Ching Fu Headquarters and I-Shou library in Taiwan, projects in New York, Washington and Europe. Landmark buildings in which he has led the design include National Assembly for Wales, Madrid Airport, winner of the 2006 Stirling Prize, Mossbourne Community Academy, the Law Courts in Antwerp and Bordeaux and the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. He received his Architecture degree at Bartlett School of Architecture. He has lectured at universities and institutes throughout Europe, and in Australia. Ivan Harbour s lecture takes place in cooperation and with the generous support of the British Council. Oxley Woods Design for Manufacture Milton Keynes, UK 2005- The 145-home Oxley Woods development at Milton Keynes is one of the successful entries in the Government s Design for Manufacture competition in 2005. The development provides a mixture of affordable housing and larger private dwellings in two and three storey houses around a central high street. The aim of the competition was the building of high quality homes at a construction cost of 60,000. Developer Taylor Wimpey and architects Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners successfully delivered a range of significant environmental benefits through the sourcing of raw materials, construction, and - most importantly - through the way in which homeowners will be able to live in these innovative properties. Oxley Woods offers a radical design for the mass market with an emphasis placed on the potential of adapting houses to suit their occupants lifestyle changes and family sizes. These benefits far exceed the original Design for Manufacture competition and also exceed most existing and planned sustainability regulations through high levels of insulation, controlled ventilation and reduced carbon emissions. The design of the Oxley Woods houses also achieves the maximum National Home Energy Rating and a Very Good EcoHomes classification. The EcoHat has solar absorbent panels which pre-heat ventilated filtered air, and can be connected to the hot water storage tank to provide passive solar water heating, thereby optimising energy consumption. The serviced spaces including bathrooms, kitchens and heating/lighting centres are standardised across the range of proposed house types and are manufactured off site and transported to site for assembly. Each home has a timber frame using wood from sustainable forests. Recycled paper provides high performance insulation. The walls are Trespa panel cladding, comprising 70% softwood from European renewable forests, inert binding agents, and dyes which are metal free. Panel sizes were optimised to reduce waste, and even the delivery was organised to use the most carbon-friendly modes of transport and the quickest routes. All five per cent of the superstructure waste and the 15% of waste from the Trespa panels is recycled at the factory, with all panels being delivered to site pre-cut. A third of this reduction is directly due to the EcoHat. A 50% reduction is achievable when the EcoHat is used to top up energy for a hot water system. A heat exchanger installed in the EcoHat and the use of geothermal energy sources through a local bore hole results in a 70% reduction in carbon emissions. The homes are finished with water-saving, dual-flush toilets, low emission boilers and energy-efficient (A rated) white appliances, while green screen fencing living vines on a mesh frame are planted along garden boundaries to reduce the use of mature wood resources employed in traditional fencing. Each property achieves the maximum National Home Energy Rating (NHER) and a Very Good EcoHomes classification. EcoHomes is the name given to the BREEAM scheme for residential developments. 14 15
Shigeru Ban Shigeru Ban Architects Mostly known for his innovative use of low-cost materials like bamboo and paper, particularly recycled cardboard paper tubes, his work links natural and built environments and uses resources with economy. Born in Tokyo in 1957, Ban studied at the Southern California Institute of Architecture and the later at the Cooper Union, in NY where he graduated in 1984. The following year he established his Tokyo based practice and soon he became Professor in Architecture in several universities. Ban teaches at the Yokohama National University, the Nihon University, Columbia University, and Keio University. Ban is a consultant for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Ban s humanitarianism and his attraction to ecological architecture led him to establish the Volunteer Architects Network (VAN), an NGO to assist disaster victims and refugees, active in international relief efforts. Ban s pioneering DIY Refugee shelters where used in Japan after the Kobe earthquake, in Turkey and in Rwanda for the victims of the civil war. They still serve as low-cost disaster relief-housing around the world. They are light, environmentally friendly, and easy to transport, store and recycle. These structures feature card walls, foundations of sand-filled beer cases and ceilings and roofs of fabric. For Ban, one of the most important themes in his work is the invisible structure ; that is, not overtly expressing structural elements, but rather choosing to incorporate them into the design. Ban chooses materials as to how they express the concept behind his buildings. His attraction to ecological architecture led him to work with paper and other materials based on sustainability and because they produce very little waste. He is best known for his Curtain Wall House in Tokyo, a highlight of the Museum of Modern Art s exhibition The Un-Private House in 1999. Also for the Japanese pavilion at Expo 2000 in Hanover in collaboration with architect Frei Otto and structural engineers Buro Happold. Among Ban s projects is a small museum in Dijon, France, constructed of card and steel; four homes in Portugal, also employing card; and a series of bamboo residences near the Great Wall in Beijing. Future Cities Lab investigates the potential for design to intermesh technological and ecological processes into new types of productive architectural assemblies. How can we make palpable these processes of energy production and consumption, while deliberately celebrating them as critical practices of cultural value and creative expression? How can design synthesize ideas of form with energy, geometry, ecology and organization? Can the synthetic recombination of these seemingly disparate elements produce a hybrid environment integrated with its local and global ecosystems? Envitec SA: recycling plant ENVITEC SA is the main contractor of the joint venture that constructed the Mechanical Sorting and Composting Plant at Ano Liosia. The plant is located adjacent to the western Attica sanitary landfill area. The plant is designed to treat more than 1000 tons of waste daily, 1/4 of the total municipal solid waste of Attica. Meletitiki SA: passive solar office building This office complex in Polydroso was completed in 1995. Designed by architect Alexandros Tombazis, a pioneer in passive solar design in Greece, the office has a number of passive solar solutions that result in a large decrease in energy use, including the use of night ventilation that cools the building during the summer. The new Acropolis Museum Designed by archiects Bernard Tchumi and Greek architect Michalis Fotiadis, the new museum was completed in 2008 after years of debate and two international design competitions. This impressive building has become a landmark in the heart of the historic urban fabric of the city of Athens. To quote E.F.Schumacher: The way in which we experience and interpret the world [ ] depends very much [ ] on the kind of ideas that fill our minds, and to quote Ortega y Gasset in Schumacher s Small is beautiful : the transmission of ideas [ ] enable man to choose between one thing and another. This is why transmitting ideas about environmental issues to children of school age, influence their choices as citizens, voters, consumers, professionals, parents and educators tomorrow. Further, this program trains young leaders in environmental issues, and trains them in volunteering in schools and the communities. The ECOWEEK environmental awareness program in schools compensates for the lack of formal environmental education in schools in Greece and Cyprus, where it is being implemented since 2007. Till this date the program has reached over 8,000 high school students in Greece and Cyprus.
