INVITATION The family of Dorothy Cappas cordially invites the entire community of St. George to a luncheon given in her memory, which will take place in our banquet hall on Sunday, November 15, 2009 following the Divine Liturgy and Memorial Service. 6 th ANNUAL FALL FOOD FESTIVAL We will be hosting our 6 th annual Fall Food Festival on Tuesday, November 10th and Wednesday, November 11 th from 12:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. featuring Greek Food, Pastries, Crafts and Holiday booths. Your help is needed. Please call the office 322-6165 to volunteer and also plan to attend! LIBRARY RENOVATIONS by Louis Bakris The Fr. Anthony Kanavos library and conference room provides a new look and functionality to our church s space, space that can be optimized and tailored for all affiliated organizations. Along with the renovations such as bookcases and new carpeting, a computer with full wireless internet has been added. The purpose of these changes is to enable interaction with exterior resources and allow more flexibility in media usage. This translates into all organizations who use that room are now able to use any resource from an internet webpage like YouTube or Google, in addition to PowerPoint presentations, word documents, pictures, and movie clips are now available. All these options and more can now be a part of any meeting or Sunday school class. Moreover, with the wireless internet the archdiocese website will now be available as a resource for all different organizations and well as a teaching resource for Sunday school. Specifically, the Sunday school can use it to obtain information on topics like, daily scripture readings, access to the library of icons, and even live broadcasts of the Divine Liturgy that can be used to teach without disturbing the actual service. Additionally, the computer allows the Sunday school to watch a webcam broadcast of the liturgy, giving our Sunday school children the opportunity to discuss and explore the liturgy for further understanding without having to be quiet in Church. What does this mean? Each organization within the church will reap benefits. In addition, to the benefits reaped by the Sunday school other organizations would benefit as well. This includes use of the new wireless internet for the music program to find different songs online on websites like YouTube or being able to play the CD on the TV s speakers or the parish council meeting being able to display different documents up on the TV so they can be discussed communally. This will also carry over into the woman s Philoptochos as they use material on the web to be shared in real time with the group and save Xerox costs. This system has been programmed and geared for the layman of the church to use with everything preinstalled and easy to access so that there does not have to be any learning steps to it but rather just pick it up and use it. SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS CHRISTMAS CARD Our annual campaign for the SAINT GEORGE CHURCH CHRISTMAS CARD begins November 1 st. If you wish to be listed in our Christmas Card, please complete the form which can be found on the Pangari, on the shelf in front of the Church office or in this newsletter. Enclose your check for $17.00 payable to Saint George Sunday School and return it as soon as possible to the church office or drop it in the Community Christmas Card box located in the lobby. Deadline is Monday, December 1 st. SUNDAY SCHOOL SAINTS ALIVE Our annual Saints Alive party is scheduled for Sunday, November 8 th, immediately following the dismissal of Sunday School. This unique event gives all Sunday School students the opportunity to participate in dressing up as their favorite Saint. They should also have prepared a short theatrical presentation describing the Saint they have chosen. We kindly ask the parents of ALL the Sunday School students to bring a food item to the program. Sign up sheets are available in your child/children s Sunday School room.
The next Sunday School teachers meeting will take place on Sunday, November 1 st in the meeting room following Divine Liturgy. We look upon SS Cosmas & Damianos to bless and grant our Philoptochos' members many years of good health and productivity. Great to see many of our parishioners always thinking of giving and sharing in philanthropy Thank you to all those who donated to the rummage sale in order to make it also a successful fundraiser. A special thank you goes to Helen Salatas, who chaired the rummage sale, and to all the ladies who worked so hard getting the sale ready, working during it and cleaning up after. Thanks to all the Ladies who have been working diligently & tirelessly baking over several weeks preparing all the wonderful pastries & breads. both for the Parish Fall Food Festival benefit as well as for the Taste of the Holidays fundraiser. Greek School began in September and the children have adjusted very well. Thank you to all the parents who enrolled their children on time and helped them adjust to the new schedule. The OXI Program and Bake Sale were held on Sunday, October 25 th. The children did an amazing job and we are so proud of them! GREEK SCHOOL THANKSGIVING BREAK There will be no Greek School on November 25 th and 26 th so everyone is able to celebrate Thanksgiving. SR. GOYA NEWS John and Mary Panas are the new advisors for Sr. GOYA. The oath of office was
administered to the newly elected officers on Sunday, October 25 th. Congratulations to the new officers: Noti Doukas-President, Bobby Tsiakopoulos-Vice President; Dean Boulazeris- Treasurer and Alexandria Boulazeris-Secretary. This year there will also be team leaders: Telly Panousis and John Roumpakis. The next meeting for Sr. GOYA will be Tuesday, November 10 th at 6:30 p.m. JR. GOYA The next meeting for the Jr. GOYA will take place on Friday November 6 th in the meeting room from 6:30-8:00 p.m. We want to remind parents that all kids in grades 4 th 8 th are welcome to join JR GOYA. Our October 17 th hayride was a success. We had 35 people attend at the County Line Apple Orchard. Thank you to those parents who participated and who brought items to share with the group. We are looking forward to another joyful event! An ice skating party for Saturday, November 21 st at Millennium Park in Chicago is being planned. More information will follow! ADULT RELIGIOUS EDUCATION (A.R.E.) The parishioners who attend this group have as their goal to increase their knowledge and understanding of our precious Orthodox Christian Faith. We will be meeting Monday, November 9 th, 16 th and 30 th. This year we are studying the last book of Holy Scripture, the Book of Revelation. This will be a Bible Study format. Each session begins with a Small Compline Service at 7:00 p.m. From 7:30-9:00 p.m., we continue with the Bible Study allowing for plenty of questions and answers. ALL ARE WELCOME!!! ATTENION COLLEGE STUDENTS The school year is here and with it many of our young people are away for school. College is a challenge not only in education but socially and spiritually. Hopefully, those raised in Christian households have the armor to face the worst challenges. However, there comes a time when even the strongest armor weakens. That is why we are asking for all college students addresses (including e-mail) whether at home or away, so that we may keep in touch with them. Your help with this matter will be greatly appreciated. THE CHRISTMAS FAST The period from November 15 th until Christmas Day is a period of prayer and fasting for Orthodox Christians. Although it is popular in our society to fill the month of December with Christmas parties and celebrations, this is contrary to Orthodox tradition. For this reason, we try to refrain from celebrations; the proper time for celebrating is the twelve days of Christmas from December 25 through January 6, Theophany. If we are serious about preserving our Orthodox Faith, it is important to observe these aspects of our Holy Tradition!
