Florida Bandmasters Association 2016 ALLSTATE HIGH SCHOOL AZZ BAND AUDITION REQUIREMENTS (For the 9 th 12 th Grade HS azz Band auditioning in September of 2015 for the anuary 2016 FMEA Conference) 1 AllState azz Band membership rules and regulations: a) The student must be in the ninth, tenth, eleventh or twelfth grade b) The decision of the selection committee is final c) Only instruments listed on the AllState Application or in the 2016 AllState azz Band Requirements printed in the handbook may audition d) The student must be a member of the band program at their school and have their name submitted on the proper All State Application form The Application form must be typed and signed by the band director and principal The Application form must be submitted by the deadline date set by the District e) The band director must be a member of FBA/FMEA by September 1, 2015 f) Students selected for any AllState group must bring their own music stand, equipment, instrument(s), mutes etc 2 AllState azz Band General Information: a) The improvisation materials are selected from the amey Aebersold series b) All rhythm (Piano, Bass, Drum Set, Guitar) exercises are selected from: Stylistic Etudes in the azz Idiom by Lou Fisher, (second edition) Houston Publishing, 1995 ISBN 079555957 c) All wind (Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone) exercises are etudes written expressly for the FBA High School azz audition AllState azz Band Audition Requirements for Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone and Piano, Guitar and Bass When the student enters the room, he/she will be asked to perform: a) The specific prepared exercises for their instrument as shown in the AllState azz Band Requirements Performers should use appropriate azz articulation (not necessarily indicated) b) Lead Trumpet This requires a separate audition piece, however you must also audition for section trumpet c) + Optional Improvisation will be two choruses of Fast Blues in F from amey Aebersold s Volume 2 Nothin But Blues AND students will play the melody to Stella By Starlight then improvise one full chorus of Stella By Starlight (track 2) from amey Aebersold s Volume 9 What s New Improvisation is mandatory if you wish to be considered for a solo chair + Bass Players will walk a bass line first time, then improvise a second chorus of Fast Blues in F from amey Aebersold s Volume 2 Nothin But Blues AND walk a bass line first time to Stella By Starlight then improvise one full chorus of Stella By Starlight (track 2) from amey Aebersold s Volume 9 What s New d) Doubling (Saxophones Only) After improvisation on main instrument students will improvise two choruses of Fast Blues in F from amey Aebersold s Volume 2 Nothin But Blues AND the melody to Stella By Starlight then improvise one full chorus of Stella By Starlight (track 2) from amey Aebersold s Volume 9 What s New e) Sightreading exercise to demonstrate the student s reading ability The student will have thirty seconds to study the piece before playing it 4 AllState azz Band Audition Requirements for Drum Set When the student enters the room, he/she will be asked to perform: a) The prepared exercises for drum set listed below b) The indicated number of measures in the four different styles listed below to demonstrate steady time keeping and rhythmic creativity They should imagine themselves in a azz combo situation backing a horn soloist 1 Rock (16 bars) quarter note = 76 2 Bossa Nova (16 bars) quarter note = 120 Swing (2 bars) quarter note = 144 4 azz Samba (2 bars) quarter note = 100 a) Drummers will play the first portion of Perdido from For Drummers Only: azz Band Music Minus One Drummer (New Digitally Remastered Edition) Disc B, Track, (up to 1:28 mark on CD) b) Sightreading exercise to demonstrate the student s reading ability The student will have thirty seconds to study the piece before playing it
