Festival News Mother of the Year Pastor s Message Every year some parishes like to award and acknowledge an outstanding mother as Mother of the Year. You can imagine the reaction from the Greek mothers and their families that do not get this achievement each year. I chose to put an end to this dispute when I nominated the Mother of the Year to be the Virgin Mary. She is the Mother of God and the Mother to us all. No one challenges this recipient and everyone agrees that this honor belongs to the woman who is full of grace. Why do we have such a devotion to the Panagia? Because she changed the course of the entire human race and its relationship with God by accepting her calling to become His mother. No one else in the history of humanity has or will have this relationship to Christ as does the Virgin Mary. She holds her Son in her arms and in her Dormition her soul is held by her Son. This is why when we celebrate the Feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos it is not a sad event for the Panagia, but a joyful one as she meets her Son again. Our love, respect, and honor to the Theotokos is great and inseparable from our Liturgical life. The Liturgical calendar begins with the Nativity of the Theotokos on September 8 and ends with the Dormition of the Theotokos on August 15. Every service in the Orthodox Church commemorates and honors the Theotokos. She has countless icons attributed to her different miracles and is depicted as the Directress, Joy of All Who Sorrow, the Unfading Rose, and the Glykofilousa (sweet kiss). She is faithful, sweet, compassionate, and meek, yet she is the Protectress of all nations and the Mighty Defender or Ti Ypermaho (Akathist Hymn) of every city. The title Mighty Defender was once the title the Athenians gave to Athena, the mighty Goddess of War, to protect the city, but this same title is used for the Panagia. Though the Panagia is not a soldier, she is ceaselessly defending our Mother Church and protecting our faithful through her fervent prayers and intercessions. She is powerful because of her faith and love for her Son. She is the example of what it means to put our pride, fears, anxiety, pain, and our doubts aside and follow what God calls us to do, and thus changing the entire world and giving it hope. Like in the Wedding of Cana, Mary never stops telling Christ when the sweetness and joy in people s lives runs out and needs to be transformed. The Mother-of-the-Year award goes to the Panagia. Fr. Christos Kanakis Page 14 Page 3

Greetings Panagia Parishioners! Hope all of you and your families had a very restful and enjoyable summer! President s Message Special congratulations to our beloved Fr. Christos. After the Panagia Name Day Divine Liturgy, His Eminence, Metropolitan Gerasimos, gave his blessing and promoted him to the rank of Confessor, which means he can hear confessions and give the prayer of absolution. His Eminence blessed Fr. Christos to wear the vestment called Eigonation which is in a diamond shape that hangs over his knee and represents the sheath of a sword and shield of faith. I also can t put in words to the sincere gratitude of the great talents of Fr. Christos. Fr. Christos, thank you for all the great work and dedication. We all love and greatly appreciate everything you do for our Assumption Parish! Words can not describe how great it felt to see and experience the many, very spiritual uplifting, exceptional fellowship and rewarding successful events in August that our Assumption Parish provided. Beginning with our standing room only Panagia Vesper Service, followed by a delightful dinner, desserts (delicious loukamades made by Vickie Henning and Stelio Zoumberakis) and coffee; followed the next day with a very beautiful Panagia Name Day Hierarchical Divine Liturgy, having the honor and pleasure of Metropolitan Gerasimos officiating both services, and our fellow neighboring priest serving, followed by a delicious luncheon. Thanks to all that helped made these two events a pleasure to attend and a great success, especially to my fellow Parish Council Members, Tasos Papas for leading the ushers, Bobbie Soupos, President of Philoptochos and the Philoptochos Ladies for sponsoring the dessert and coffee after the Vesper service, to Jimmy Eleopoulos for chairing to Mary Lofton for the set up and all the volunteers for serving. Special Thank you to Athena Sehremelis for donating the flowers for the health for her children and grandchildren. Many Thanks to Katy Georgedes for the beautiful decoration she made for the Panagia s icons. Two great and successful days of Vacation Bible School. Special Thanks to Maria Georgakopoulos for chairing and organizing two fun filled and spiritual learning days for our children. Greek Festival preparations are in high gear! Dino Syrengelas, Greek Festival Chair this year is doing an outstanding job in preparing for our annual Greek Festival. When you receive this bulletin, we will all be supporting this great event! ALL are welcome to support!! Thank You to all the hard-working ladies that are dedicating their time preparing and baking the sweets for the Greek Festival! Dino, you have done a great job in preparing and organizing this year s Greek Festival. Best of luck to you, your committee, to all the workers and to our Assumption Parish!! Special thanks to all of you that answered and paid to date your Stewardship commitment! As we begin September, many of our Assumption Ministries will be beginning again in full swing! Please contact the Ministry Leaders that are located on the inside cover of the bulletin, Fr. Christos or contact Voula at our church office for more information. As you have read, Sunday School is starting as well as Greek School, Greek Dance, JOY Choir and GOYA! Be sure to sign up and don t have your children miss out on any of these great ministries! Please look both in our Panagia Bulletin and our weekly Sunday Bulletins for other events! Our Parish Council is here to serve you and our Panagia Parish. Please do not hesitate to call or ask any of your parish council members or me with any questions! We will provide you with the answers we know and get back to you with the answers we don t know. Thanks for all of your continued support! Also, Back Packs and School Supplies. It s that time of year again. For the Child is so appreciative of all that we do for the Children. Watch the papers for good deals on school supplies and fill a back pack. If you don t care to shop we will do it for you. A $30 donation will purchase a back pack and supplies. Make checks payable to L.B, Philoptochos. Thank you! Also; our upcoming canned goods/dry goods drive for the holidays. It s not too early to watch for those specials. It s a little too early to purchase turkeys but that is right around the corner. This food drive is a Church outreach Program, not just Philoptochos. The children play a big part in this outreach by gifting the food/ and turkeys to the needy upon arrival to pick up the goods. Page 11
