Message from Father George Today, we begin our Church Sunday School year for 2015-2016. I am especially thankful for the direction of our Education, Cultural, and Youth Ministries Committee (ECYM) with the new Club 10. Over the past month, we have encouraged you to look at the number ten and its importance for us. Of the six items listed under Club 10 (on the next page), the last one is critical for this new ministry for our children. Parents, grandparents, and caregivers: please bring the children to Liturgy before the 10:00 am start time. The Divine Liturgy is a body of prayer that begins when the Priest lifts up the Holy Gospel Book and announces Blessed is the Kingdom of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. The Divine Liturgy has often been referred to as the experience of God s Heaven on earth. We should be present when the Epistle and the Gospel are read so as we hear the Word of God in these Scripture lessons. We are receiving spiritual nourishment, and this also helps us to prepare appropriately for receiving the Eucharist (Holy Communion). With the beginning of our Church Sunday School, I will be offering a children s sermon right after the reading of the Holy Epistle and the Holy Gospel. This Sunday the children s sermon will be a review of how we as Orthodox Christians make the sign of the Cross. We make the sign of the Cross with our RIGHT hand. We put our thumb, index finger, and middle finger together to signify the Three Persons of the Holy Trinity. Our ring finger and our little finger are pressing against our palm, signifying the two natures of Christ: He is both God and Man. When we sign ourselves by the making of the Cross, we begin (1) touching our head and pray that God is in my mind and thoughts. Then (2) we touch over our hearts or abdomen and pray that God is in our hearts. Next, we touch our near (right) shoulder (3) and last our far (left) shoulder (4) and pray that God is being glorified by the things that we do. I am excited about the beginning of the new academic year and pray that all of our students, whether they are in preschool or graduate school, enjoy a most blessed year. May they enjoy a peace about their school work, may they be strengthened by God to be diligent workers, and may this be their best school year ever!
HYMNOLOGY During the past two years our Sunday School students learned ten (10) new hymns of the Orthodox Liturgy, which they are encouraged to chant during services. Today, Sunday, September 13, please join the choir and the youth in chanting ANEITE TON KYRION - PRAISE THE LORD, shortly after Holy Communion. Below is the hymn. 10 Commandments 10 Describes Perfection 10 Digits on our Hands and Feet 10 Elements form all of Creation 10 Hymns our Children learned 10 am Divine Liturgy begins The Sunday (Church) School staff worked very hard over the summer to develop a wonderful year for our children. Here are two new learning opportunities to which they look forward: Beginning today, September 13, 2015, the first day of class, Father George will offer a sermonette for the children after the Gospel reading (a few minutes after 10 am). For the past two years, the children learned to chant 10 hymns, and the staff encourages them to sing in church. Beginning today, September 13, 2015, everyone is invited to join the children and choir in chanting the Communion Hymn Enite ton Kyrion - Praise the Lord. So, bring your listening ears, your singing voices,! and join PHILOPTOCHOS GARAGE SALE The Garage Sale is a major fundraiser for Philoptochos. Thank you to everyone, who already donated items. If you have more donations to bring, please place these in the gymnasium for pricing. Large items should be brought to the hall as soon possible. To avoid transportation costs, the committee asks that you find a friend with a truck to help deliver your items to the Hellenic Cultural Center. SENIOR CITIZENS LUNCHEON Seniors are invited to the next Senior Citizens Luncheon on Thursday, September 24, at 11:30 am in the Coffee Room. Appreciation is extended to Despina and Panagiotis Patselikos for sponsoring the luncheon in memory of his parents, Ermioni and Pantelis Patselikos. Make plans now to attend. DIVINE LITURGY ADDED PRIOR TO SENIOR CITIZENS LUNCHEON Please note that Father George will celebrate Divine Liturgy on Thursday, September 24, beginning at 10:00 am for the feast day of St. Thekla. The service will precede the luncheon. SUNDAY SCHOOL AND GREEK SCHOOL REGISTRATION Parents, Sunday School and Greek School classes will resume today, Sunday, September 13.

Resurrection Apolytikion Plagal Tone 2 When the angelic powers appeared at Your grave, the soldiers guarding it feared and became as dead. And standing by the sepulcher was Mary who was seeking Your immaculate body. You devastated Hades, not afflicted by it. You went to meet the virgin, and granted eternal life. You resurrected from the dead. O Lord, glory to You. Apolytikion of the Forefeast of the Cross Tone 2 We offer You in mediation the life-giving Cross which, of Your goodness, You have given unto us, the unworthy, O Lord. Save Your hierarchs and Your flock, and grant Your peace through the Theotokos, O only friend of man. Apolytikion for the Consecration Tone 4 You have shown the earthly beauty of the holy tabernacle of Your glory to be like unto the splendor of the heavenly firmament, O Lord. Strengthen it forever and ever, and accept our prayers which we unceasingly offer therein unto You, through the Theotokos, O You Who art the Life and Resurrection of all. Apolytikion of the Holy Trinity Plagal Tone 4 Blessed are You, O Christ our God, who made fishermen all-wise, sending upon them the Holy Spirit and, through them, netting the world. O Loving One, glory to You. Kontakion for the Consecration Tone 4 The Church is shown to be a many-lighted heaven that shines a guiding light upon all them that do believe; wherein while standing we cry aloud: Do You Yourself now establish this house, O Lord.
THE EPISTLE Galatians 6:11-18 O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance. To you, O Lord, I have cried, O my God. BRETHREN, see with what large letters I am writing to you with my own hand. It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh that would compel you to be circumcised, and only in order that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. For even those who receive circumcision do not themselves keep the law, but they desire to have you circumcised that they may glory in your flesh. But far be it from me to glory except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation. Peace and mercy be upon all who walk by this rule, upon the Israel of God. Henceforth let no man trouble me; for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brethren. Amen. THE GOSPEL John 3:13-17 The Lord said, "No one has ascended into heaven but he who descended from heaven, the Son of man. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God sent the Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him."
