ΜΝΗΜΟΣΥΝΟ - ΓΕΥΜΑ 2-11-14 Την Κυριακή 2α Νοεμβρίου ετελέσθη στην Εκκλησία μας, υπό του Θεοφιλεστάτου Επισκόπου μας κ. Νικάνδρου, το καθιερωμένο Αρχιερατικό μνημόσυνο υπέρ αναπαύσεως των Κτητόρων, Ευεργετών, Δωρητών, Ενοριτών και Μελών της Κοινότητας-Ενορίας μας. Ο Θεοφιλέστατος Επίσκοπος στην ομιλία Του αναφέρθηκε στο έργο και την προσφορά όλων που εργάστηκαν με αγάπη και αφοσίωση και σήμερα δεν είναι μαζί μας αλλά αναπαύονται στην ουράνια Βασιλεία του Θεού, ευχόμενος να υπάρξουν συνεχιστές του έργου των. Μετά το τέλος της Θείας Λειτουργίας και του Μνημόσυνου ακολούθησε το Ετήσιο Γεύμα της Φιλοπτώχου αδελφότητάς μας. Περισσότερα από 400 άτομα που συμμετείχαν στην εκδήλωση πέρασαν ευχάριστες μεσημεριανές ώρες, σε χαρούμενο και φιλικό περιβάλλον. Στο γεύμα, εκτός του Θεοφιλεστάτου, παρευρέθηκαν ο Βουλευτής και Υπουργός της Περιφερείας μας (West Torrens) κ. Τομ Κουτσαντώνης μετά της συζύγου του, καθώς και ο Νομικός Σύμβουλος της Αρχιεπισκοπής μας κ. Ιωάννης Κιοσόγλου. Ο π. Διογένης εκ μέρους της Φιλοπτώχου ευχαρίστησε όλους που με την συμμετοχή τους συνέβαλαν στην μεγάλη επιτυχία της εκδήλωσης. Ευχαρίστησε όλους που πρόσφεραν διάφορα δώρα για το λαχείο και ιδαίτερα τους κατωτέρω: Την Δις Μαγδαληνή Θεσσαλονικεύς για πιάτα, ποτήρια, χαρτοπετσέτες. Τον κ. Paul και κα Μαρία Γκαγκάνη για 26 σάκους κάρβουνα. Τον κ. Στέλιο Γκαϊτατζή για ντομάτες, μαρούλια, αγγούρια και καρπούζια. Το εστιατόριο Greek on Halifax για την μπύρα. Τον Jim Gatis & John Solomos από SA Linen για τραπεζομάνδηλα. Τέλος, ευχήθηκε ο Θεός δια Πρεσβειών του Αγίου Μεγαλομάρτυρος Αγίου Γεωργίου να χαρίζει σε όλους υγεία και κάθε χαρά και ευλογία. 4

ΜΝΗΜΟΣΥΝΟ - ΓΕΥΜΑ 2-11-14 5

Αγιασμός 12 ης Τάξης Κολλεγίου Την Τετάρτη 15 Οκτωβρίου, ο Θεοφιλέστατος Επίσκοπός μας κ. Νίκανδρος, βοηθούμενος υπό του π. Διογένους και του π. Κωνσταντίνου, ετέλεσε τον καθιερωμένο αγιασμό για τους μαθητές της 12 ης Τάξης του Κολλεγίου μας πριν αρχίσουν τους διαγωνισμούς τους. Μετά το τέλος του αγιασμού ο Θεοφιλέστατος απηύθυνε πατρικούς λόγους στους μαθητές και τις μαθήτριες τονίζοντας ιδιαιτέρως, ότι πάντοτε θα πρέπει να έχουν στο νου τους το Motto (σύνθημα Κολλεγίου) «ΑΙΕΝ ΑΡΙΣΤΕΥΕΙΝ». Τέλος, τους ευχήθηκε καλή επιτυχία στις εξετάσεις τους υπενθυμίζοντάς τους ότι δεν θα πρέπει να ξεχάσουν το Κολλέγιο του Αγ. Γεωργίου που γι αυτούς υπήρξε η πνευματική κυψέλη. ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΟ ΣΧΟΛΕΙΟ ΣΑΒΒΑΤΟΥ ΑΝΑΚΟΙΝΩΣΗ Κάνουμε γνωστό στους γονείς που ενδιαφέρονται για να γράψουν τα παιδιά τους στο Σαββατιανό Ελληνικό μας Σχολείο κατά τη σχολική χρονιά 2015, τα ακόλουθα: Οι εγγραφές θα γίνουν το Σάββατο 31 η Ιανουαρίου 2015 και ώρα 9.00-12.00 μ.μ. στο όπισθεν χωλ της Εκκλησίας μας, 60 Rose Street, Thebarton Τα μαθήματα θα αρχίσουν το Σάββατο 7 Φεβρουαρίου 2015. New Year s Resolutions Linking teenagers with grandparents On New Year s Eve people reflect on the year past and analyse how each fared with their personal aspirations and goals, activities undertaken, achievements made and any failings experienced. They begin to make a list of how to do things better the following year, hoping to live life in a harmonious way with family and friends; healthy of body with guidance from doctors and mentors; and spiritually fulfilling with the blessing of the Lord. In developing that list of resolutions, the youth use a wide range of resources their own and friends experiences to date, internet, the electronic and social media, plus feedback and guidance from parents. The grandparents are a forgotten resource! The grandparents have golden knowledge through their many years of living and having experienced decades of changes. Sharing that expertise and knowledge to safeguard their grandchildren is a bonus which must be harnessed. Grandparents have an added skill as most have straddled two different countries and cultures, having to adapt from the poor after-war turmoil in Greece (Ελλάδα) in the 1950/60s to a new, structured world in the Antipodes with different challenges of language, culture, climate/seasons, work ethic and religion. Determination and adaptability was what made that generation of Hellenes succeed in Australia and throughout the civilised and uncivilised world. As the grandparents sight diminishes, hearing fades, body cracks when walking and their hair goes down the drain, they still have a wealth of wisdom they can share with their loved ones. As you, the youth of today, are likely to become migrants of a different type because your tertiary education and work opportunities are likely to be in the global context, it is pertinent to raise your fears/apprehensions with the wise grandparents. As you mature and evolve into future leaders of the world, you may be pleasantly surprised at how much first-hand experience and wisdom there is available at your doorstep now! Discussions and reflections of this type, especially at the festive season, are fun and rewarding for all the family members in developing their own New Year Resolutions. This Community, Church and College have been built by grandparents. Their leadership is now in the hands of their children, who will ultimately hand-ball it onto the young hands of the next generation - you, the teenagers of today! At this time of reflection, together we can pray for the cessation of conflict in the middle-east, eradication of sickness in the African continent and food for the needy, whilst entreating global leaders to use their influence for peace and harmony throughout the world! We wish all the parishioners a very Happy Christmas and pray that our Patron saint, Saint George will guide our teenagers to be respectful of our elderly, appreciative of the wisdom in the Lord s teachings, healthy in body and mind, whilst in maturing they become wiser and kinder to each other! Insane people do the same thing over and over again and expect different results. Try thinking outside the box, using your initiative and doing things differently to achieve better outcomes! Από το Χριστουγεννιάτικο γεύμα των ηλικιωμένων Αγίου Γεωργίου την Τρίτη 2/12/14. On Tuesday 2 nd December 2014, the Saint George Community Senior Citizens organised their annual Christmas Luncheon in the hall, where approximately 250 people came together to enjoy each other s company and farewell the year past. The Greek dancing group of Saint George College students performed for all, in an atmosphere of friendship and love, culminating with a visit from Father Christmas. The Senior Citizens will recommence their fortnightly meetings in January 2015. Bishop Nikandros of Doryleon expressed the blessing and best wishes from our Primate, Archbishop Stylianos. KNOWING OUR SAINTS SAINT STEPHEN In December our Church celebrates two Saint Stephens: Saint Stephen the Protomartyr - 27 December Saint Stephen of the Church of Antipas - 9 December Saint Stephen the Protomartyr Was one of the seven deacons of the original Church of Christ in Jerusalem, sharing his duties with six others, namely Philip, Prochoros, Nikanor, Timon, Parmenas and Nicholas. Their function was to assist priests with communion, spread the new faith and be alert for the imminent danger that came with being a Christian in those early days they were the first group to serve the Messiah. The young Stephen had studied under the renowned rabbinical tutor Gamaliel, who had been the mentor of the great St Paul. Not unlike Paul, Stephen was a qualified religious scholar who once sought to discredit the Saviour until he came to know Jesus Christ and to embrace him as Paul did in that dramatic confrontation on the road to Damascus. His strong knowledge of the Law of the ancient covenant, Stephen now directed to the new faith with zeal and enthusiasm. Stephen confined his missionary work and preaching to the city of Jerusalem, where he had prepared himself under the Pharisee Gamaliel for quite another career. Well versed in the Scriptures, Stephen used the Old Testament to full advantage in promoting the Messiah, citing passages of ancient prophets of God that a Saviour would be born. He spread the word that the Saviour was among them now in the person of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. He constantly preached to all who would hear him encouraging them to answer the call to Christ and therefore find salvation promised to the world in the pronouncements of the Bible and in the writing of biblical scholars. He asked them to take heed of what Jesus Christ said, of the way lived, and died on the Cross to save us. Anger and frustration was demonstrated by his former colleagues who had studied with him under Gamaliel as they viewed Stephen s defection from their ranks disloyal and were angered at the challenges he mounted within their synagogues. An angry mob turned on Stephen, seized him and dragged him into the street crying out for his blood and demanding death. He was dragged to the grates of Jerusalem and pelted by stones cast by the bloodthirsty and died a brutal death at the hands of those with whom he had grown up. The stoning took place three years after the Crucifixion of Christ and Stephen is known as the first to die for the Saviour. The early Christians buried Stephen in a small chapel in Jerusalem, known as the chapel of St. Stephen the Protomartyr, celebrating his name day on 27 December. Saint Stephen of the Church of Antipas From birth Stephen was marked and destined for greatness, in the service of Jesus Christ. He was born to Theophano and Zacharias and bore an extraordinary birthmark the sign of the cross, seemingly branded on his chest. Some speculated this would disappear gradually, but it remained on Stephen s body throughout his long life. Zacharias was a priest and shortly after Stephen s birth he was appointed to the grand Cathedral of Hagia Sophia, which was painstakingly erected by Emperor Justinian as the religious centre of the Christian and Byzantine world. Zacharias was a friend of Patriarch Methodios, who assumed the spiritual leadership of the civilized world following the death of the iconoclast Emperor Theophilos it was therefore, no surprise that Methodios suggested Stephen join his father at Hagia Sophia as reader and cantor. For a short time, Father and son raised their voices and praised Jesus Christ in the magnificent cathedral that stands to this day in the shadows of minarets as a symbol of Christian truth and Byzantine architectural ingenuity. A few years later, after the death of Zacharias, Stephen asked to leave Hagia Sophia to enter the Chapel of St Peter for service, not as a reader but as an apprentice monk. Following a period of preparation, Stephen was tonsured a monk and shortly thereafter he became a priest, remaining in austere seclusion to pray and meditate, thereby strengthening his spirit. He had a vision of St Antipas, bearing a message that he would be needed elsewhere in the very near future! Soon after the divine visitation, an earthquake struck the city of Constantinople and its environs, whereupon Stephen hurried to the Church of St Antipas. He found a gaping hole that had swallowed up the beautiful church. Standing at the edge of the crater, Stephen recalled that St Antipas, who had been a student of St John the Evangelist, had anticipated the tragedy and his message had said that Stephen would receive spiritual assistance in serving the Saviour away from the Chapel of St Peter. He spent fifty years in this crater of devastation, a constant reminder to those who came to the edge to peer into the abode of a man whose Christian spirit and radiance symbolized the invincibility of the Christian spirit. Devout pilgrims soon discovered that through the prayer of Stephen, divine healing was granted; resulting in the site of disaster becoming a shrine of healing! A generation of Christians visited the site, unaware that a cross adorned the chest of the pious Stephen who served Jesus Christ for many years and died peacefully on December 9. The South Australian Youth have chosen St. Stephen the Protomartyr as their patron Saint. May He bless and guide our youth 14
