FORTHCOMING EVENTS CHURCH ATTENDANCE Sunday, 1 June at 9.30: Years 10-12 Sunday, 15 June at 9.30: Years 7-9 HALF YEARLY EXAMINATIONS Years seven and eight will be sitting for their half yearly examinations on Monday, 2 June till Friday, 6 June 2008. The years nine and ten half yearly examinations begin on Monday, 16 June to Friday, 20 June 2008. All students are strongly encouraged to begin revising the work covered this semester in all subjects. Unfortunately, many students consider some subjects as not that important or since they will not continue studying them in the senior years they will not study for them. What they fail to realise is that all subjects teach them the skills and foundations needed for the senior years of high school, Thus, it is advantageous to the student to study for all subjects equally! We wish all students good luck! QUEEN S BIRTHDAY Monday, 9 June is the Queen s birthday and a public holiday. IMMUNISATION Immunisation will take place on Wednesday, 11 June as follows: Year 7: Chickenpox Years 7, 8, 9 & 10: HPB SCHOOL PHOTOS The High School student photos will take place on Thursday, 12 June and Friday, 13 June. All students are expected to be well groomed and wearing their winter school uniform. Girls must have their hair tied back and boys are expected to be clean shaven. SCHOOL BALL We look forward to seeing all the families and friends of the School community at the annual St Euphemia College Ball, on Saturday, 21 June to be held in the School Hall at 7.00pm. WORK EXPERIENCE An integral part of the year ten curriculum is Work Experience. This valuable scheme affords students the opportunity to experience first hand a career that interests them and assists them in making an accurate decision for their future vocation. Many students return every year and enthusiastically confirm that they eagerly anticipate becoming a preschool teacher, a journalist or engineer. Also, others return and proclaim that the career they had aspired to was not to their liking or expectations and thus choose another career option. We hope year ten gains valuable knowledge and insights into their future career when they attend their work experience placements between Monday, 23 June and Friday, 27 June.
END OF TERM TWO Term two ends on Friday, 27 June with church service scheduled for Thursday, 26 June. Students will be able to receive Holy Communion and are advised to prepare for it. School resumes on Monday, 21 July, following week one of the timetable cycle. We wish all students a safe and happy holiday! YEAR TEN ELECTIVES EVENING An information evening for year ten students and parent/caregivers will be held on Wednesday, 30 July at 6.30pm. This is an important occasion whereby students and parents will be informed about subject selection for the senior years of high school. Heads of Departments will describe the many subjects offered by the School for years eleven and twelve. Following this presentation, parents will be given the opportunity to speak with teachers regarding subject choices.
St. Euphemia College Ball St. Euphemia College invites all families and friends of the school to attend its major fundraising event of the year, the School Ball. It is a wonderful opportunity for the school community to socialize and enjoy an evening of fine food and dancing. Join the distinguished guests and members of the School Board for an evening of merriment and Greek dancing. The ball will be held in the School Hall on Saturday, 21 June 2008 and tickets will be available for purchase from the school office.
NEVER-ENDING AWARDS Once again our talented band Never-End, represented the school in a nationwide band competition. Never-End consists of Frank Lakoudis (vocalist), Peter Repousis (drummer) and Dennis Hritis and former school captain, Simon Kapsis (guitarists). They were also joined by a new member from the Australian Institute of Music, Nick Dracoulis who played bass guitar. Youth Rock, an Arrive Alive initiative, is a battle of the bands competition, where Never-End competed in Heat 1, on Wednesday, 16 April, in front of a combination of fans, peers, teachers, music-lovers and industry heavyweights. The competition has launched the careers of musicians like Silverchair and Alex Lloyd. They firstly performed their most recognised track, Be Free, followed by two new tracks, Burning Love and February Child; the latter being dedicated to our teacher Mr. Spanos. With the help of their friends, families and overall school support, Never- End found themselves in the Youth Rock finals, with a record number of wildcard votes. On 20 April, Never-End performed at the Youth Rock final, along with the rest of the state s top 10 bands, and won the Family Planning NSW Award for the best positive lyrics, for their song, Be Free. Never-End would like to thank the school community for their support in wildcard voting, and a special thank you, to the students and teachers who came to see them on the night. Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia National Schools Event 2008 This year s Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia National Schools Event took place between Wednesday, 7 to Friday, 9 May 2008. It was a jam packed three days, filled with excitement, joy, teamwork and the creation of new friendships. The week kicked off with an opening ceremony at St Spyridon Parish in Kingsford where with the blessings of the church, the games were underway. The first day s events included boys & girls Basketball. Both teams put up a miraculous fight to win the titles. Although the girls came very close, unfortunately they lost to St Spyridon 33-36 and were placed second. The girls displayed excellent skills and perseverance and even though they lost, they demonstrated that a champion is someone who gets up, even when he can t (Jack Dempsey) as they fought till the very end. The second day saw the boys outdoor Soccer & girls netball teams put in a good effort and all played their hardest trying to achieve the very best results. In the boys outdoor Soccer under the guidance of their coach Mr. Spanos, the outdoor boys tried their best and came close to winning. At the other end of the field at the indoor netball courts, the girls along with their coach Ms Allison were placed second displaying excellent skills and determination as well as good sportsmanship throughout the day. On Thursday evening, students attended a social night held at the St Spyridon Church Hall. It is here that students mingled and created new friendships with schools from Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. Finally on Friday, events included boys & girls indoor Soccer as well as Volleyball. All teams showed great skill and perseverance and this was particularly evident in the boys indoor Soccer who just missed out on taking the title by 2 points. The boys needed a win but only managed a draw, they came close and every single player put in a good effort under the leadership of their coach Mr. Theodoulou. Meanwhile, at the girls indoor Soccer under the management of Mr. Vadouniotis, the girls played to the best of their ability but were unlucky to get defeated. In Volleyball, players representing St Euphemia showed excellent teamwork and enthusiasm under the guidance of their coaches Ms Salachoris and Ms Allison. Once all the day s proceedings were over, the students headed to St Spyridon Parish yet again for the closing ceremony. It was an excellent night as we were honoured to have the Archbishop of Australia Archbishop Stylianos present. Next year s Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia National Schools Event will be held in Adelaide by St George College. We wish the 2009 squad a successful trip. Ross Wassef and Elena Philippou (year 12)
