Α Εωθινόν Β *********************************************************************************** St. Mary of Egypt During Great Lent we remember and venerate Saint Mary of Egypt both on April 1 and the Fifth Sunday of Lent. With the Canon of St. Andrew, read in many churches during the first and fifth weeks of Lent, we uphold her as an icon of repentance, an example for every Orthodox Christian to emulate. Yet for many years, she lived a life of bondage to sexual passions. If St. Mary of Egypt were alive today, would we welcome her into our assembly? I confess to Thee, O Savior, the sins I have committed, the wounds of my soul and body, which murderous thoughts, like thieves, have inflicted inwardly upon me. (The Canon of St. Andrew, Canticle 1, vs. 12.)While we don t know about the very early years of her life, we do know that she lost her virginity at age twelve and ran away from home. For the next seventeen years she was a slave to her insatiable appetite for sexual perversions, including sexual encounters with young men, even against their will. This sounds very much like a victim of pedophilia who recoils and continues in her victimization by taking on the role of a predator herself, victimizing others in the process. Many adults who fall into the bondage of pedophilia are victims of sexual abuse as children. In a futile attempt to reconcile the horror of their own victimization, they try to regain control of their lives through exploitation, continuing to inflict wounds on their own souls and bodies. Like David, I have fallen into lust and I am covered in filth; but wash me clean, O Savior, by my tears. (The Canon of St. Andrew, Canticle 2, vs. 54.) O Lady, thou hast brought forth our Joy: Grant me the spirit of mourning that in the coming Day of Judgment I may be comforted by God. (The Canon of St. Andrew, Canticle 9, vs. 327.) For all have sinned and fall short of the Glory of God. (Romans 3:23)For seventeen years, Saint Mary of Egypt lived a lifestyle that isolated her from the community and God. Covered with filth amassed over the years, her heart yet longed for union with God. People in prison feel ostracized too, isolated from God and society, as they sit in shame in prison cells longing for the same tears of repentance that lead to joy and reconciliation. Christ became man, calling to repentance thieves and harlots. Repent, my soul: the door of the kingdom is already open, and Pharisees and publicans and adulterers pass through it before thee, changing their lives. (The Canon of St. Andrew, Canticle 9, Vs. 342) The healing of the venerable Saint Mary of Egypt was not instantaneous but required a rigorous and lengthy spiritual journey. Being led by the Holy Spirit, she retreated to the wilderness where she lived the life of a hermit for seventeen years, seeking freedom from bondage of the passions. She spent a further thirty years in the wilderness having obtained the true gifts of repentance, healing and freedom from the enslavement of sin.during Great Lent, each of us seeks repentance, turning from our own vices and passions and setting our minds and hearts on God. Through the intercessions of the most Holy Theotokos, God grants us the gift of compunction to turn from our wounds and sins to find healing and comfort in Him.Let us remember Saint Mary of Egypt and her wonderful redemption. During the remainder of this Lenten journey, may we pray to be freed from our imprisonment to the passions that enslave us. Let us also pray for strength for all of our brothers and sisters who are imprisoned in penitentiaries, for their struggles and their journeys to repentance.

St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 9:11-14 BRETHREN, when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) he entered once for all into the Holy Place, taking not the blood of goats and calves but his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. For if the sprinkling of defiled persons with the blood of goats and bulls and with the ashes of a heifer sanctifies for the purification of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify your conscience from dead works to serve the living God. And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him, and said to him, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you." And he said to them, "What do you want me to do for you?" And they said to him, "Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory." But Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?" And they said to him, "We are able." And Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared." And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant of James and John. And Jesus called them to him and said to them, "You know that those who are supposed to rule over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them. But it shall not be so among you; but whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of man also came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."
Οσία Μαρία η Αιγύπτια Ένα κλασικό παράδειγμα αγιότητας, το οποίο προέκυψε μέσα από την διαδικασία της μετανοίας, παρά τον όγκο και το μέγεθος της αμαρτίας στον πρότερο βίο, προβάλει σήμερα η Εκκλησία μας, αδελφοί μου, στο πρόσωπο της Οσίας Μαρίας της Αιγυπτίας. Σο παράδειγμά της προβάλλεται και προτείνεται, σύμφωνα με τον ιερό Συναξαριστή, «προς διέγερσιν των ραθύμων και αμαρτωλών εις μετάνοιαν». Από τα δώδεκα έως τα εικοσιεννέα χρόνια της έζησε βίο αμαρτωλό, χρησιμοποιώντας την σάρκα της ως μέσο βιοπορισμού, παρασύροντας τόσο τον εαυτό της, όσο και πλήθη ανδρών στην ακολασία και στην απώλεια. Κάποτε, από περιέργεια, θέλησε να επισκεφθεί τα Ιεροσόλυμα και να συμμετάσχει στην εορτή της Υψώσεως του Σιμίου Σταυρού, μαζί τους πολυπληθείς προσκυνητές. Καθώς, όμως, επεχείρησε να εισέλθει στον Ναό της Αναστάσεως, ένιωσε μία υπέρλογη και αόρατη δύναμη να την εμποδίζει, την στιγμή που το πλήθος κινούνταν ανεμπόδιστα. Το γεγονός αυτό τη συγκλόνισε και την οδήγησε στον να κατανοήσει ότι η εμμονή στην αμαρτωλή ζωή της ήταν η αιτία για την οποία στερούνταν την Χάρη και την αγιαστική δύναμη του Θεού. Γι αυτό και μετανόησε με συντριβή καρδιάς και αποχώρησε από τον κόσμο, ασκήτεψε στην έρημο του Ιορδάνου, επί σειρά δεκαετιών, μη βλέπουσα τα πρόσωπα των ανθρώπων, μόνη ενώπιον του Θεού, κλαίουσα και μετανοούσα για την πρότερη έκλυτη και αμαρτωλή ζωή της. Α- ξιώθηκε δε οσιακού τέλους, λαμβάνοντας ως επισφράγιση της μετανοίας της, το Σώμα και το Αίμα του Κυρίου, από τα χέρια του Οσίου ασκητού Ζωσιμά. Ο βίος της Οσίας Μαρίας της Αιγυπτίας, μετά την μεταστροφή της στην ζωή του Χριστού, νοείται ως υπόδειγμα μετανοίας για κάθε άνθρωπο που αντιλαμβάνεται την πτωτική κατάσταση της ψυχής του ως πνευματική ασθένεια και επιζητεί το έλεος του Θεού για την θεραπεία της. Αυτή η πορεία της μετανοίας, στη συνείδηση της Εκκλησίας είναι σταυρική και αναστάσιμη. Είναι σταυρική γιατί προϋποθέτει τη δύσκολη, μα και σωστική απόφαση της ενδοσκόπησης, της αυτοεξέτασης, του αυτοελέγχου και της αυτομεμψίας. Ο άνθρωπος της εποχής μας, που καλείται σε διαρκή εξωστρέφεια, που απογυμνώνεται από κάθε είδους πνευματικότητα, που ναρκισσεύεται διαρκώς στο κάτοπτρο των εφήμερων επιτυχιών του και αυτοπλανάται από την παραζάλη της πλασματικής παντοδυναμίας του, δύσκολα κοιτά μέσα του, δύσκολα αφιερώνει χρόνο για να τα βρει με τον εαυτό του, αρνείται να αναμετρηθεί με τα πάθη του, να σταθεί, ενώπιος ενωπίω, με το επηρμένο εγώ του. Ταυτόχρονα, όμως, είναι και Αναστάσιμη, γιατί η απόφαση της ριζικής αντιμετώπισης της εσωτερικής πλάνης, αναδεικνύει τον όντως άνθρωπο, τον πλασμένο για τα υψηλά, για τα πνευματικά, αποκαθιστά την εσωτερική ειρήνη και οδηγεί στην συμφιλίωση με τον Θεό και τον συνάνθρωπο. Αυτή η διαδικασία είναι διαρκής και όχι στιγμιαία. «Δεν είναι μια παροδική συντριβή από τη συναίσθηση διαπράξεως κάποιας αμαρτίας, αλλά μια μόνιμη πνευματική κατάσταση, που σημαίνει σταθερή κατεύθυνση του ανθρώπου προς τον Θεό και συνεχή διάθεση για ανόρθωση, θεραπεία και ανάληψη του πνευματικού αγώνα. Μετάνοια είναι το νέο φρόνημα, η νέα σωστή πνευματική κατεύθυνση που πρέπει να συνοδεύει τον άνθρωπο μέχρι τη στιγμή του θανάτου. Μετάνοια είναι η δυναμική μετάβαση από την παρά φύσιν κατάσταση των παθών και της αμαρτίας στην περιοχή της αρετής και του κατά φύσιν, είναι η τέλεια αποστροφή για την αμαρτία και η πορεία επιστροφής στο Θεό». Απόληξη αυτής της πορείας της μετανοίας είναι το πετραχήλι του πνευματικού, η ευλογημένη στιγμή της συμμετοχής στο Ιερό Μυστήριο της Εξομολογήσεως, στο οποίο οφείλει ο άνθρωπος να οδηγεί τα βήματά του, κάθε φορά που νιώθει το βάρος της αμαρτίας και της πτώσης να ανακόπτει την διαδικασία της πνευματικής του ανόδου, την είσοδό του «στην αποκαθαίρουσα κολυμβήθρα της πίστεως, της ταπεινώσεως, της συντριβής καρδίας». Μετάνοια χωρίς εξομολόγηση δεν υπάρχει, αλλά και εξομολόγηση δίχως μετάνοια δεν υφίσταται. Μπορεί η εξομολόγηση να «είναι κάτι επώδυνο, αλλά σώζει. Αναπόφευκτα, όποιος δεν έχει ζήσει τέτοια ριζική αποκοπή από τον προηγούμενο εαυτό του, δεν έχει ξεκινήσει ακόμη να ζει εν μετανοία. Είναι αδύνατον ένας άνθρωπος να αρχίσει την διαδικασία της κάθαρσης του εαυτού του, σε όλους τους τομείς, χωρίς να έχει περάσει από αυτό το καμίνι». Πορευόμενοι, αγαπητοί μου, προς τα Άγια των Αγίων της Μεγάλης Εβδομάδος, ας ακολουθήσουμε κι εμείς την σταυρική πορεία της μετανοίας, που βίωσε μαρτυρικά η Ο- σία Μαρία η Αιγυπτία, προσεγγίζοντας τα ιερά γεγονότα, με τρόπο βιωματικό και εμπειρικό και όχι επιφανειακό. Σότε η Ανάσταση του Θεανθρώπου θα είναι η απαρχή για την προσωπική μας ανάσταση και την εν Χριστώ αναγέννησή μας. ΑΜΗΝ!

After you click on ON-LINE REGISTRATION CLICK HERE on the homepage, you will find two registration sections on the actual registration page. READ THE DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY!!! Section 1 - this is for families who have not participated in this past year's DADGOBL basketball program which did on-line registration. Basically this is a link to create a family profile with one ID and password for all your children. Every participant needs to have a baptismal and birth certificate uploaded, so these should be scanned to your computer prior to starting the registration process. If your baptismal includes your date of birth, you can scan it 1x and include it on both uploads (when required). This process takes about 5 minutes to create the family profile and another 2-3 minutes for each participant --- as long as you have your scanned docs ready. Section 2 - this is for families who have participated in this past year's DADGOBL basketball program and already have an on-line family profile. You will need to login and register each of your children. This process takes less than 2 minutes. Please remember that this is a new process for all of us so be patient and read before you click.
