Message from Father George THE WORK OF THE IOCC Throughout the year we receive visitors at the Cathedral from the International Orthodox Christian Charities, or IOCC. Their website states: IOCC staff identifies needs, develops plans, manages operations, tracks grants, guides programs, and assures reporting and transparency. IOCC is accountable to the Assembly of Bishops, governed by an elected Board of Directors, and managed by an Executive Director and Executive Team. IOCC is committed to working with the most affected communities to identify the appropriate short and long-term responses to their needs. The work of the IOCC has taken their teams throughout the world to assist in a multitude of humanitarian needs. With the recent storms and flooding that affected our state, the IOCC is closely monitoring the situation in the area, and members of the IOCC Emergency Response Network, known as Frontliners, are responding as the needs emerge. They have also been in contact with Orthodox and ecumenical partners (including our Cathedral), the Red Cross, and other relief partners from the Voluntary Organization Active in Disaster (VOAD) network to determine the most appropriate response. We are thankful for the work of the many Cathedral parishioners, who volunteered yesterday to help clean our sister-church Holy Trinity in Baton Rouge and for making and delivering meals for the workers. Of course, as Orthodox Christians our immediate concern is for our brothers and sisters in the Church, who are in need. We must remember that our Lord commands that we love our neighbor, not just our Orthodox Christian neighbor. Our thoughts and prayers are with those impacted by this latest round of severe weather and the first responders, who are actively assisting in the ongoing rescue efforts, stated IOCC US Country Representative Daniel Christopulos. "IOCC is committed to working with our Orthodox Church community and local ecumenical partners to do our part in helping those impacted." Once the immediate needs of the Holy Trinity Church are addressed through clean-up workdays, more volunteers are still needed to assist the IOCC in many other ways. Mr. Christopulos is seeking volunteers from our Cathedral community to provide continued assistance even after the physical clean-up. There will be a variety of needs for which volunteers can help, not the least of which is guiding those affected through the flood of paperwork necessary to request continued financial assistance through insurance companies and government agencies. To volunteer, please speak with me today or call me this week at the office 504-282-0259! 2017 EPIPHANY MEETING - AUGUST 30 Volunteers, who previously worked on the annual Epiphany event, and those, who would like to help with the 2017 Epiphany Celebration scheduled Sunday, January 8, 2017, are asked to attend a preparation meeting on Tuesday, August 30, at 7:00 pm at the Hellenic Center. If you cannot attend the meeting but wish to help or to serve on a committee, please advise the Cathedral office so that you can be contacted about upcoming meetings. CHURCH DIRECTORY Work on the long awaited church directory is underway. Heads, or head, of households will have their names published with their current home address. Likewise, telephone numbers and cell numbers available to the Cathedral office will be included for each. Children's names, however, will not be listed. If you DO NOT WISH to have your telephone or cell number in the directory, please contact the Cathedral office by September 30. GREEK FESTIVAL PASTRY COMMITTEE The Pastry Committee is featuring $5 and $10 boxes of either baklava, kataifi, or stuffed finikia. Also available are frozen tiropites or galaktobourika by the dozen for $10. Please stop by the table in the Coffee Room and support this project. GREEK NIGHT IN OCTOBER Everyone is invited to SAVE THE DATE and plan to attend the GREEK NIGHT Celebration at the Hellenic Cultural Center on Saturday, October 22, 2016, featuring LEFTERI BOURNIA with the Apollo Orchestra. A portion of the profits will benefit ST. JUDE HOSPITAL. The APOSTLE THADDAEUS, a Jew by race, was from Edessa. He became a disciple of Christ when he came to Jerusalem but returned to his native land after our Lord's Ascension. In Edessa he catechized and baptized Abgar and later preached in Mesopotamia. His life ended in martyrdom. Though some call him one of the Twelve, whom Matthew calls "Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus" (Matthew 10:3), Eusebius says that he is one of the Seventy: "After [Christ's] Resurrection from the dead, and His ascent into Heaven, Thomas, one of the twelve Apostles, inspired by God, sent Thaddaeus, one of the seventy disciples of Christ, to Edessa as a preacher and evangelist of Christ's teaching." As Mother of life, He who dwelt in the ever-virginal womb transposed her to life.

THE EPISTLE I Corinthians 3:9-17 BRETHREN, we are God's fellow workers; you are God's field, God's building. According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder. I laid a foundation, and another man is building upon it. Let each man take care how he builds upon it. For no other foundation can any one lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any one builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw - each man's work will become manifest; for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. If the work which any man has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. If any man's work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire. Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you? If any one destroys God's temple, God will destroy him. For God's temple is holy, and that temple you are. THE GOSPEL Matthew 14:22-34 At that time, Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up into the hills by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, but the boat by this time was many furlongs distant from the land, beaten by the waves; for the wind was against them. And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, "It is a ghost!" And they cried out for fear. But immediately he spoke to them, saying "Take heart, it is I; have no fear." And Peter answered him, "Lord, if it is you, bid me come to you on the water." He said, "Come." So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus; but when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, "Lord, save me." Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, "O man of little faith, why did you doubt?" And when they entered the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God." And when they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret.
