When the tidings of the resurrection from the glorious angel was proclaimed unto the women disciples and our ancestral sentence also had been abolished to the Apostles with boasting did they proclaim that death is vanquished ever more and Christ our God has risen from the dead and granted to the world His great mercy Hymn for St. Athanasios Τὴν ἐν σαρκὶ ζωήν, σοῦ κατεπλάγησαν, Ἀγγέλων τάγματα, πῶς μετὰ σώματος, πρὸς ἀοράτους συμπλοκάς, ἐχώρησας πανεύφημε, καὶ κατετραυμάτισας, τῶν δαιμόνων, τὰς φάλαγγας ὅθεν Ἀθανάσιε, ὁ Χριστὸς σε ἠμείψατο, πλουσίαις δωρεαῖς Διὸ Πάτερ, πρέσβευε Χριστῷ τῷ Θεῷ, σωθῆναι τὰς ψυχὰς ἡμῶν Tin en sarki sou kateplagisan, Aggelon tagmata, pow meta somatos, pros aoratouw simplokas, exorisas panefime, kai kateravmatisas, ton daimonon tas falaggas; othen Athanasie, o Xristos se imipsato, plousies doreas; Dio Pater, presveve Xristo to Theo, sothine tas phixas imon. Epistle - St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 5:22-26; 6:1-2 Brethren, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self -control; against such there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. Let us have no self-conceit, no provoking of one another, no envy of one another. Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Look to yourself, lest you too be tempted. Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ Gospel - Matthew 8:28-34; 9:1 At that time, when Jesus came to the other side, to the country of the Gergesenes, two demoniacs met him, coming out of the tombs, so fierce that no one would pass that way. And behold, they cried out, "What have you to do with us, O Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?" Now a herd of many swine was feeding at some distance from them. And the demons begged him, "If you cast us out, send us away into the herd of swine." And he said to them, "Go." So they came out and went into the swine; and behold, the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea, and perished in the waters. The herdsmen fled, and going into the city they told everything, and what had happened to the demoniacs. And behold, all the city came out to meet Jesus; and when they saw him, they begged him to leave their neighborhood. And getting into a boat he crossed over and came to his own city.

GREEK ORTHODOX ARCHDIOCESE OF AMERICA 8-10 East 79th St. New York, NY 10075-0106 Tel: (212) 570-3530 Fax: (212) 774-0237 Web: http://www.goarch.org - Email: communications@goarch.org Protocol No. 122/15 July 4, 2015 Independence Day Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The annual celebration of Independence Day in this country is an opportunity for all to reflect on the value of freedom, its role in the history of the United States of America, and the opportunities it provides for relationships, life, and well-being. The value and priority of freedom is evident in the history of this country, both through the struggles to achieve it for all persons as well as in the great accomplishments and progress that have been made in terms of the freedom to think, speak, move, invent, and succeed. As Greek Americans and Orthodox Christians we celebrate this freedom. We recognize the blessings that freedom has provided to our families and ourselves as we live, work, and worship in this country. We also recognize the value of freedom in emphasizing our heritage and identity. We are free to share this cherished heritage in an environment that values freedom of expression and the open sharing of ideas and diversity. We have much to offer from our historic heritage. As members of this society and as Orthodox Christians we know we are truly free when our pursuits and goals are not for ourselves but for the benefit and spiritual well-being of others and for the honor and glory of God. Our freedom to speak is an opportunity to proclaim the Gospel. Our freedom to live securely is freedom to keep our ultimate trust in God. Our freedom to achieve is the opportunity for spiritual growth in communion with God and to guide others to do the same. Our freedom to believe is our opportunity to be a constant and beautiful witness through our worship in truth and love. As we join with family, communities, and as a nation in the observance of Independence Day and the celebration of freedom, may we affirm our commitment to sharing the true freedom we have thanks to our Lord Jesus Christ, and may we lead others to see the abundant life and tremendous blessings that this freedom offers to all people. I pray that the Liberator God and God of freedom be with you always. With paternal love in Him, DEMETRIOS Archbishop of America
