St. Euphemia High School Newsletter March 2008 Mission Statement: That within a dynamic Orthodox, Christian framework, a student may strive to achieve academic excellence, a yearning for learning and social responsibility. Greek Independence Day and Annunciation of Theotokos Sydney s Greek Australian community will celebrate Greek Independence Day on Sunday, 16 March with a wreath-laying ceremony at the ANZAC War Memorial at Martin. Place. This will be followed by a procession to the Sydney Opera House including the Greek Orthodox Colleges and the Greek Afternoon Schools. The celebration will culminate in a special program of traditional Greek dancing, speeches by political leaders and His Eminence Archbishop Stylianos. St. Euphemia College welcomes all parents/guardians and friends to join the Greek National Independence Day Celebrations. It is expected that all students will attend the celebrations, wearing their summer uniform, including their hat and blazer. No jumpers are to be worn. The day will begin with Church attendance in the morning, followed by a lunch break. Students will then board the buses for Martin Place. All students are to remain with the school till the end of the celebrations, which will conclude at approximately 5.00pm. More specific details will be forthcoming at a later date. Strive for Excellence Furthermore, this day is of religious significance as we celebrate the Annunciation of the Theotokos. FORTHCOMING EVENTS SCHOOL UNIFORM SHOP Every student must wear a blazer and school hat for the Independence Day March on Sunday, 16 March. The School Uniform shop is open every Tuesday and Thursday between 2.00 4.00pm. Also, during the April school holidays it will be open on Tuesday 8, 15 and 17 April so that students can purchase items of the winter school uniform. Years 7 12 PARENT/TEACHER NIGHT Parents/Guardians of Years 7 and 12 students are invited to attend the Parent/Teacher Evening interviews that will be held on Wednesday, 5 March 2008. This is an excellent opportunity for parents/guardians of Year 7 to meet their children s teachers and discuss their progress. Parents of Year 12 will be able to receive advice in preparation for the students Half-Yearly examinations and their progress thus far. Students will receive a booking sheet and are required to book appointments with their teachers. YEAR 12 HALF YEARLY EXAMINATIONS On Monday, 7 April 2008 Year 12 students will begin their Half Yearly examinations. The results of most courses will contribute to their final assessment mark. All students should have begun studying for these examinations and we wish them good luck. EASTER BREAK Due to the Easter break, there will be no school from Friday, 21 March to Tuesday, 25 March. School will commence on Wednesday, 26 March. SWISSA SWIMMING CARNIVAL All first, second and third finalists from the St. Euphemia College swimming carnival will participate in the regional SWISSA Carnival to be held on Monday, 17 March, 2008. We wish all competitors good luck!
ST. EUPHEMIA HIGH SCHOOL OPEN NIGHT The high school Open Night will be held on Wednesday, 2 April at 7.00 pm. All families are welcome to attend and experience the diverse academic and co curricular opportunities the school offers to all students. Tours of the school will be conducted and parents can view the new State of the Arts computer laboratories!
Year 7 Peer Support Camp On Monday, 11 February 2008 we went to Stanwell Tops for a three-day camp. We entered the bus full of energy and excitement. The journey consisted of kilometres of dense bushland, green plains and bare hills. We were on the bus for about an hour and our first sign of arrival was a small building on the horizon. We settled into our cabins and then had morning tea. Later on we were separated into three groups and each had its peer support leaders. When everyone was ready, the three groups went to do their activities. Today the green group did the giant swing and archery. The giant swing was an enormous swing next to a cliff where they harness you, pull you up at a certain height and then you swing. After we returned we had dinner and then we entered the hall to start trivia where we did lots of fun races and quizzes. When it was over we watched a movie to calm down before going to sleep. The next day we woke up bright and early ready for another adventurous day. After breakfast was the leap of faith. Everyone got harnessed and had to climb a pole about 10 metres tall. Once you were at the top you jumped to grab a yellow ring. After a small break our instructors where kind enough to give us, we were headed for high ropes, not knowing what was in store for us. When we arrived we got harnessed and formed pairs. While one of us was at the bottom checking if everything was alright, the other person had to pass a set of levels of going across ropes and poles. That s when it started to rain. And it rained hard and a breeze froze us to death. When the activity was over, the sun came out again to dry us and our wet clothes. Lunch was delicious and filled us up with energy to continue. After lunch was abseiling where we had to climb down a wall of five metres and another of ten metres with our back turned to the ground. We learned a lot about teamwork. When this frightening event was over, we had dinner and then Karaoke. Everyone danced and sang and as soon as it was over, everyone was tired. To settle down, we watched another movie and when that was finished, we went with half closed eyes to bed. Stavros Dimitriadis
ΝΕΑ ΤΟΥ ΓΥΜΝΑΣΙΟΥ Η Επέτειος της Εθνικής μας Ανεξαρτησίας και ο Ευαγγελισμός της Θεοτόκου Στις 25 Μαρτίου εορτάζουμε τον Ευαγγελισμό της Θεοτόκου καθώς και την επέτειο της Εθνικής μας Ανεξαρτησίας. Αυτή τη μέρα η Παναγία μας έλαβε το χαρμόσυνο νέο από τον Αρχάγγελο Γαβριήλ ότι θα γεννούσε το Σωτήρα μας, Ιησού Χριστό. Και ήταν αυτή τη μέρα, το 1821, που οι Έλληνες αγωνιστές ορκίστηκαν στο Μοναστήρι της Αγίας Λαύρας να αγωνιστούν μέχρι θανάτου για την ελευθερία της πατρίδας τους. Η Ελληνορθόδοξη Κοινότητα του Σύδνεϋ θα εορτάσει κι εφέτος την διπλή αυτή εορτή της Ορθοδοξίας και του Έθνους μας, την Κυριακή 16 Μαρτίου, με κατάθεση στεφάνου στο ANZAC War Memorial στο Martin Place. Θα ακολουθήσει παρέλαση των 3 Ελληνορθόδοξων Κολλεγίων καθώς και των Απογευματινών Σχολείων στο Opera House. Το εορταστικό πρόγραμμα περιλαμβάνει ελληνικούς χορούς και ομιλίες από τον Σεβασμιώτατο Αρχιεπίσκοπο κ.κ. Στυλιανό και άλλους πολιτικούς. Το Κολλέγιο της Αγίας Ευφημίας προσκαλεί όλους τους γονείς/κηδεμόνες και φίλους να πάρουν μέρος στους εορτασμούς για την Επέτειο της Εθνικής μας Ανεξαρτησίας. Όλοι οι μαθητές αναμένονται να παρευρεθούν φορώντας την καλοκαιρινή στολή με το σακάκι και το καπέλο. Τα πουλόβερ δεν επιτρέπονται. Η ημέρα θα ξεκινήσει με Εκκλησιασμό το πρωί και θ ακολουθήσει ένα διάλειμμα για μεσημεριανό. Έπειτα, οι μαθητές θα επιβιβαστούν στα λεωφορεία για το Martin Place όπου θα λάβει χώρα η κατάθεση στεφάνων στο μνημείο του Αγνώστου Στρατιώτη. Όλοι οι μαθητές απαιτείται να παραμείνουν στην εκδήλωση μέχρι το τέλος, γύρω στις 5.00μ.μ. Συνεντεύξεις Γονέων/Καθηγητών Οι γονείς/κηδεμόνες των μαθητών της Α Γυμνασίου και Γ Λυκείου παρακαλούνται να παρευρεθούν στη βραδιά συνεντεύξεων Γονέων/Καθηγητών που θα λάβει χώρα την Τετάρτη 5 Μαρτίου, 2008. Αυτή είναι μια εξαιρετική ευκαιρία για να γνωριστούν οι γονείς με τους καθηγητές των μαθητών και να συζητήσουν για την πρόοδό τους. Ειδικά οι γονείς των μαθητών της Γ Λυκείου θα έχουν την ευκαιρία να λάβουν συμβουλές σχετικά με την προετοιμασία των μαθητών για τις επερχόμενες εξετάσεις και την μέχρι τώρα πρόοδό τους. Κολυμβητικοί Αγώνες SWISSA Όλοι οι μαθητές που έλαβαν 1 η, 2 η και 3 η θέση στους Σχολικούς Αγώνες Κολύμβησης θα πάρουν μέρος στους κολυμβητικούς Αγώνες SWISSA που θα διεξαχθούν τη Δευτέρα 17 Μαρτίου, 2008. Ευχόμαστε σε όλους τους μαθητές καλή επιτυχία. Εξετάσεις Γ Λυκείου Τη Δευτέρα 7 Απριλίου οι μαθητές της Γ Λυκείου θα καθίσουν για τις εξετάσεις Α εξαμήνου. Τα αποτελέσματα αυτών των εξετάσεων θα επηρεάσουν σε κάποιο βαθμό και τον τελικό βαθμό του HSC. Ευχόμαστε σε όλους τους μαθητές μας Καλή Επιτυχία! Καθολικό Πάσχα και 25 η Μαρτίου Λόγω του εορτασμού του Καθολικού Πάσχα το σχολείο θα είναι κλειστό την Παρασκευή 21 Μαρτίου και τη Δευτέρα 24 Μαρτίου. Επίσης λόγω της Εθνικής μας Γιορτής το σχολείο θα παραμείνει κλειστό την Τρίτη 25 Μαρτίου.

Όλες οι οικογένειες προσκαλούνται να παρευρεθούν και να διαπιστώσουν τις ακαδημαϊκές και άλλες εκπαιδευτικές ευκαιρίες (co-curricular) που προσφέρει το κολλέγιο στους μαθητές.
