Thank you to all, who have renewed their Philoptochos membership for this year. If you are not currently a member, please consider joining. At this time Philoptochos takes the opportunity to remind everyone that MEN ARE IMPORTANT in the life of the Philoptochos chapter. For many years Philoptochos has enjoyed the support shown by gentlemen, who often take time away from their families to offer good works in the name of the ministry. All men of the community are invited to join the Philoptochos membership roles and to be an important part of the work done in the name of charity and philanthropy. Everyone has special talents, and the members welcome new ideas and suggestions. PHILOPTOCHOS MEMBERS ARE CALLED TO ATTEND TWO VERY IMPORTANT MEETINGS. A short special meeting today, March 22, after church in the boardroom to discuss and select an adult nominee and youth nominee for the Archangel Michael Award. Also, nominations for 2015-17 board members will be made. Members are asked to bring items for the food drive. Please mark your calendar and make plans to attend. Message from Father George UNIQUELY RELATED IN CHRIST All of the men and women, who were raised in God s Glory to be identified as Saints of our Holy Church, have a very unique relationship with Christ, one another, and with us. Saints are the perfect role-models for the modern day Christian, but many of those we hold up as Saints were also influenced by the Saints who proceeded them and by their peers, men and women who lived a holy and pious life. Today, we commemorate Saint John Climacus (of the Ladder) for his treatise on the Spiritual Life presently known as the Ladder of Divine Ascent. When His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios consecrated our Cathedral, he placed the relics of Saint George, Saint Demetrios, and the Holy Martyrs of Raitho in our Altar table. The Holy Martyrs of Raitho were groups of monastic fathers killed on at least two occasions during the 4th century AD at the Biblical location called Elim (today called El Tur), where Moses arrived at the seventy date palms and twelve springs of water (Exodus 15:27). Later, in the 6th century monastic life flourished at Elim, and in the 7th century it was the abbot, John of Raitho, who asked Saint John Climacus, abbot of Saint Katherine monastery in the Sinai, to write a spiritual guide. That guide is the Ladder of Divine Ascent for which John Climacus is known today. So, the unique relationship is that Saint John Climacus was influenced by the abbot of the monastery whose forefathers were martyred whose relics are now blessing us here in the Cathedral. All these men lived for Christ and taught others how they could live a life in Christ. Through their prayers may we all enjoy a fruitful remainder of this Lenten season as we each struggle on our Spiritual Journey to Pascha and our growth in Christ! The Martyrdom of the Fathers of Raitho is commemorated in our Church on January 14. DONATIONS NEEDED FOR GREAT LENT SERVICES Please consider donating toward the purchase of items required for Great Lent, Holy Week, and Pascha, including flowers, incense, and charcoal. Contributions for these items are most welcomed. You may contact the Cathedral office at 504-282-0259 to make your donation. THE EPISTLE St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 6:13-20 BRETHREN, when God made a promise to Abraham, since he had no one greater by whom to swear, he swore to himself, saying, "Surely I will bless you and multiply you." And thus Abraham, having patiently endured, obtained the promise. Men indeed swear by a greater than themselves, and in all their disputes an oath is final for confirmation. So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he interposed with an oath, so that through two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible that God should prove false, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to seize the hope set before us. We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner shrine behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek. THE GOSPEL Mark 9:17-31 At that time, a man came to Jesus kneeling and saying: "Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a dumb spirit; and wherever it seizes him it dashes him down; and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid; and I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able." And, he answered them, "O faithless generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me." And, they brought the boy to him; and when the spirit saw him, immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. And, Jesus asked his father, "How long has he had this?" And, he said, "From childhood. And it has often cast him into the fire and into the water, to destroy him; but if you can do anything, have pity on us and help us." And, Jesus said to him, "If you can! All things are possible to him who believes." Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, "I believe; help my unbelief!" And, when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, "You dumb and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him, and never enter him again." And, after crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out, and the boy was like a corpse; so that most of them said, "He is dead." But, Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. And, when he had entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, "Why could we not cast it out?" And, he said to them, "This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer and fasting." They went on from there and passed through Galilee. And, he would not have any one know it; for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, "The Son of man will be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him; and when he is killed, after three days he will rise."
