ACS Athens Stavros Niarchos Foundation Learning Center AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM ELEMENTARY SCHOOL The After School Program is a program which extends beyond the school day and provides a supportive environment to our students at ACS Athens. The purpose of the program is to facilitate students through learning processes and to provide them with a strong academic, social and emotional foundation. In order to accomplish these goals, during the after school program, a range of educational programs and creative work through art has been developed to encourage students to improve and maximize their learning potential. The program is administered by teachers with special education background who have the knowledge and expertise to enhance learning. Students will learn to apply basic skills and strategies to their core classes to be successful. After school activities are sensitive to the various grade levels, age groups and issues of diversity, in order to best meet the needs of individual children. After school activities target different student needs and give emphasis on specific learning outcomes in mathematics, reading and writing and completion of homework. The ways in which these support programs are provided to students is what really makes the difference. ACS Athens has identified key elements of high performance to growing minds, and to enhance those elements, utilizes curricula and teaching methods that make learning fun and exciting. Each After School Activity is staffed with qualified personnel maintaining a ratio of one adult for every 3-4 students. The reading and math support classes will run with a ratio of one teacher for every 2 students. All courses, with the exception of the Homework Support, are also open to non-acs students, grades K-3 and 4-6. 1

Elementary School After-School Homework Study Program A program designed for students in all grade levels The After-School Study Program is designed to enhance knowledge, skills, and understanding of core concepts through enriching learning opportunities that complement the school day. The goal is to link the after-school program with students learning experiences in the classroom in order to improve their academic achievement. Students will benefit in measurable ways from the additional support they will receive from this program. Last year s staff, along with other highly skilled and qualified professionals, will supervise the program. They will have use of the library, online resources and interactive boards. Emphasis will be given to reinforcing skills such as good study habit development, organizational techniques, skills and strategies for managing and completing homework assignments, test taking strategies, and time management strategies for planning ahead. This will result in students returning home with all, or most, of their homework completed, leaving them time for leisure activities and family pursuits. This after-school study program is open to all Elementary students. Sessions for Elementary School students will run daily from 15:45-16:45 and from 16:45 17:45. Elementary School students must be picked up by their parents/guardians at 16:45 or 17:45. Program cost per semester: Elementary School: 1600 euro for 5 hours a week (daily) 1200 euro for 3 hours a week (M-W-F) 900 euro for 2 hours a week (Tue-Thurs) 3000 euro for 10 hours a week (daily 15:45 17:45) The program s Instructors will: Provide homework support. Teach strategies and skills. Ensure that the academically-linked activities are engaging. Give students the opportunity to gain the confidence they need to become successful and independent learners. Work with students in small groups of 3-4 students. Activity Name / Title Age Group: Elementary School AFTER SCHOOL READING/WRITING SUPPORT PROGRAM Day(s): Mondays, Fridays Time: 15:45-16:45 Location: Annex 1st floor The After School Reading/ Writing Support Program is designed to assist students that are struggling with the English language, at the reading, writing and oral level, in order to obtain the necessary skills to be successful in the Language Arts discipline. The focus of the program at all school levels is to provide phonemic awareness through the use of visual, auditory and kinesthetic means and to expose the students to meaningful literature of various cultures and genres. The program also includes a grammar component which will address correct sentence structure and organization in writing. Our goal is for our students to develop a love for reading and writing by providing a strong foundation in the English language. Through this interaction within group settings students with various social needs will learn in a creative and safe environment to meet individual objectives and priorities. Το πρόγραµµα θα εστιάσει στην ενίσχυση της φωνολογικής καλλιέργειας και της αναγνωστικής ακρίβειας και ευχέρειας, µέσω της χρήσης πολυαισθητηριακών µεθόδων. Επιπλέον, θα εστιάσει και στην ενίσχυση της κατανόησης κειµένων, γραπτών και προφορικών, καθώς και στη σωστή δόµηση προτάσεων και ολοκληρωµένων απαντήσεων, προφορικά και γραπτά. Creativity through crafts is a wonderful way for students to express themselves, build self-esteem and to become more socially aware of their environment. Through play, art, games the students will tap into their intuition and feel successful through activities designed for their individual needs. Similarly, they will experience the freedom and release of creating from the heart. For grade K, emphasis will be given on developing skills in a co-operative setting. All areas of the student will be nurtured and explored. Some of the skills taught in group activities, which will also focus on individual needs; are awareness of shapes, colors, and improving dexterity. Students will build on physical/gross motor skills with hands on activities. They will work on social and constructive play and will learn to interact with other students through playing team games and board games. The students will further use their imagination and skills to create a product, learn problem solving skills, build structures, work in groups, and become creative through dramatic play. Social and emotional skills will be built upon through role plays, arts and crafts. This will also enhance and build friendships. Day: Saturdays Time: 10:00-12:00 Location: Elementary School Cafeteria Grades: 3-5 The Saturday Creative Learning and Play provides a powerful opportunity for children between grades 3-5 to take part in various creative games, arts and crafts, and activities. Creativity through crafts is a wonderful way for students to express themselves, build self-esteem and to become more socially aware of their environment. Through play, art, games the students will tap into their intuition and feel successful through activities designed for their individual needs. Similarly, they will experience the freedom and release of creating from the heart. Emphasis will be given on developing skills in a co-operative setting. All areas of the student will be nurtured and explored. Some of the skills taught in group activities, which will also focus on individual needs; are awareness of shapes, colors, and improving dexterity. Students will build on physical/gross motor skills with hands on activities. They will work on social and constructive play and will learn to interact with other students through playing team games and board games. The students will further use their imagination and skills to create a product, learn problem solving skills, build structures, work in groups, and become creative through dramatic play. Social and emotional skills will be built upon through role plays, arts and crafts. This will also enhance and build friendships. All students will have a chance to work with different materials such as; clay, sand, paper-mache, color mixing, origami, Legos, wood, cloth and many more. Students will have fun, interact with each other, and at the same time learn how to create various objects on their own. Silliness, messiness and giggles are highly encouraged and welcomed! She holds a bachelor s degree in International Business and European Affairs with a minor in Economics. She has taken part in many seminars and workshops on Special Education and loves to work with children. Ms. Evloyias has been working with students for the past 3 years. She has tutored students from grades JK-10 th and has also worked with students of all ages in small groups and in one-to-one setting. Ms. Evloyias is currently working at ACS Athens, as a 3 rd grade teacher assistant. Instructor: Angelik Grigoratos, grigoratosa@yahoo.com Angelik Grigoratos completed her Bachelors, Honours and Masters (Cum Laude) degrees in Social Science with an emphasis on Counseling Psychology at the University of Pretoria in South Africa. She has obtained certificates to train as a Family Constellations Therapist, Lifeline counselor and as a HIV/AIDS counselor. As a licensed psychologist (Health Professions Council of South Africa) she worked as a lifeline counselor at Lifeline in Pretoria South Africa, as an HIV/AIDS pre- and post- test counselor in Mamelodi Clinic, as an educator to train teachers in underprivileged environments to help children with learning difficulties and as a therapist at a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center. At Tshwane University of Technology she worked as a therapist in many areas such as drama therapy, group therapy, couples therapy, career counseling, individual therapy, lectured life skills and stress management skills to 1 st year students, and did psychometric evaluations and report writing.
