ACS Athens Stavros Niarchos Foundation Learning Center AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM ELEMENTARY SCHOOL The After School Program is a program which extends beyond the school day and provides a supportive environment to our students at ACS Athens. The purpose of the program is to facilitate students through learning processes and to provide them with a strong academic, social and emotional foundation. In order to accomplish these goals, during the after school program, a range of educational programs and creative work through art has been developed to encourage students to improve and maximize their learning potential. The program is administered by teachers with special education background who have the knowledge and expertise to enhance learning. Students will learn to apply basic skills and strategies to their core classes to be successful. After school activities are sensitive to the various grade levels, age groups and issues of diversity, in order to best meet the needs of individual children. After school activities target different student needs and give emphasis on specific learning outcomes in mathematics, reading and writing and completion of homework. The ways in which these support programs are provided to students is what really makes the difference. ACS Athens has identified key elements of high performance to growing minds, and to enhance those elements, utilizes curricula and teaching methods that make learning fun and exciting. Each After School Activity is staffed with qualified personnel maintaining a ratio of one adult for every 3-4 students. The reading and math support classes will run with a ratio of one teacher for every 2 students. All courses, with the exception of the Homework Support, are also open to non-acs students, grades K-3 and 4-6. 1

Elementary School After-School Homework Study Program A program designed for students in all grade levels The After-School Study Program is designed to enhance knowledge, skills, and understanding of core concepts through enriching learning opportunities that complement the school day. The goal is to link the after-school program with students learning experiences in the classroom in order to improve their academic achievement. Students will benefit in measurable ways from the additional support they will receive from this program. Last year s staff, along with other highly skilled and qualified professionals, will supervise the program. They will have use of the library, online resources and interactive boards. Emphasis will be given to reinforcing skills such as good study habit development, organizational techniques, skills and strategies for managing and completing homework assignments, test taking strategies, and time management strategies for planning ahead. This will result in students returning home with all, or most, of their homework completed, leaving them time for leisure activities and family pursuits. This after-school study program is open to all Elementary students. Sessions for Elementary School students will run daily from 15:45-16:45 and from 16:45 17:45. Elementary School students must be picked up by their parents/guardians at 16:45 or 17:45. Program cost per semester: Elementary School: 1600 euro for 5 hours a week (daily) 1200 euro for 3 hours a week (M-W-F) 900 euro for 2 hours a week (Tue-Thurs) 3000 euro for 10 hours a week (daily 15:45 17:45) The program s Instructors will: Provide homework support. The focus of the program at all school levels is to provide phonemic awareness through the use of visual, auditory and kinesthetic means and to expose the students to meaningful literature of various cultures and genres. The program also includes a grammar component which will address correct sentence structure and organization in writing. Our goal is for our students to develop a love for reading and writing by providing a strong foundation in the English language. Instructor: Chrysoula Ploutou, ploutouc@acs.gr Chrysoula Ploutou earned her Bachelor s degree, in Psychology and Elementary Education from Clark University in Worcester, Massachusettes, U.S.A. Her Master s degree in Education was also achieved from Clark University. She acquired her Certificate of Advanced Study (CAS) in Special Education from Fairfield University. Ms Ploutou is a certified licensed teacher in the state of Connecticut. Ms Ploutou has taught JK, K, first, second, fourth grade and Middle School Optimal Match since 1997 in the public school system in the United States and in international schools in Greece. Most recently she is the Optimal Match Supervisor, coordinating all three schools, Elementary School, Middle School and Academy through the department of Student Services. This is Ms Ploutou s fourth year working at ACS and her second year working in the Optimal Match Program, at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Learning Center. She is providing students with strategies to acquire the skills necessary to be successful in school and in their lives. She encourages differentiation in the classroom in order to make learning meaningful, focusing on students strengths and talents. This remedial class will support the students individual needs through revision and innovative, hands-on, instruction. Manipulatives and the TouchMath program will also be used in order to support and build on numerical concepts that have been covered in class during the school day. Instructor: Lia Sinouri, sinourisl@acs.gr Lia Sinouri earned her Bachelor s degree in European History from Connecticut College. Her Master s degree was obtained from The Institute of Education in London, in Special Education. She has worked with students of all ages and abilities in small group or one-to-one settings. Activity Name / Title SOCIAL GROUP (GRADES 3-5) Age Group: Elementary School Day(s): Tuesdays Time: 15:45-17:45 Location: Annex 1st floor The Social Group Program provides a powerful opportunity for children between grades 3-5 to take part in a group oriented activities. Social Skills are the foundation for getting along with others, thus the social groups will offer direct instruction in social skills through a variety of teaching techniques. These may include modeling, role-play activities, videos, coaching, and games. Through this interaction within group settings students with various social needs will learn in a creative and safe environment to meet individual objectives and priorities. The group will be lead by a professional psychologist/ special educator. Parents and teachers are encouraged to be involved so as to ensure generalization of skills taught to natural settings. Instructor: Angelik Grigoratos, grigoratosa@yahoo.com Angelik Grigoratos completed her Bachelors, Honours and Masters (Cum Laude) degrees in Social Science with an emphasis on Counseling Psychology at the University of Pretoria in South Africa. She has obtained certificates to train as a Family Constellations Therapist, Lifeline counselor and as a HIV/AIDS counselor. As a licensed psychologist (Health Professions Council of South Africa) she worked as a lifeline counselor at Lifeline in Pretoria South Africa, as an HIV/AIDS pre- and post- test counselor in Mamelodi Clinic, as an educator to train teachers in underprivileged environments to help children with learning difficulties and as a therapist at a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center. At Tshwane University of Technology she worked as a therapist in many areas such as drama therapy, group therapy, couples therapy, career counseling, individual therapy, lectured life skills and stress management skills to 1 st year students, and did psychometric evaluations and report writing. In Greece, as a licensed psychologist Angelik has worked and is continuing working independently with students with learning difficulties such as dyslexia, ADHD, autism/asperger s syndrome. Currently she is a shadow teacher at ACS and has worked in a group setting with students with learning difficulties at the OM afterschool program. Since living here from 2007 she has attended several seminars and workshops receiving specialized training in various teaching strategies for students on the autistic spectrum as well as students with learning difficulties. This will be an activity which will meet the needs of children who want to strengthen their reading and writing skills. Activities such as, mindfulness, visualizations, drama and drawing will be employed to enhance reading and writing. In this program, students will learn several time-management methods and will have the opportunity to discover which ones suit their individual needs. Furthermore, they will obtain knowledge on various strategies, which will enhance their performance and make studying easier and therefore more pleasant. As a result, students are expected to attain the skills necessary to feel confident with studying in order to transform their most dreaded activity into a manageable task! Instructor: Markella Kaplani, kaplanim@acs.gr Markella Kaplani has a Master s degree in Clinical-Counseling Psychology obtained from LaSalle University in collaboration with New York College, Athens Greece. Ms. Kaplani has academic and counseling experience with students of all age levels through several of her former professional positions, and internship placements. She has extensively worked with students to provide them with skills that will allow them to enhance their performance, whilst simultaneously assisting them in decreasing feelings of anxiety, frustration, and boredom, behaviors of avoidance, and thoughts of self-downing. Given that children spend half their day in school, the educational institution is a medium through which they receive important stimuli that will potentially shape their behaviors, personalities, thoughts, and even their life philosophy. It is vital, therefore, that students are equipped during this process with self-awareness, confidence, communication skills and positive attitude in order to be able to achieve their goals and to have the strength necessary to cope efficiently with obstacles they may run into. These qualities will not only serve so as to assist them in being successful during their school years, but also, and most importantly, throughout their entire adult lives! Through various creative, interesting and fun activities, this program is aimed at increasing elementary children s awareness of themselves, their surroundings and the world in general in order to assist them in building a healthy image of themselves as well as of others, good critical thinking, beneficial communication skills and generally a dynamic and positive outlook on life. Παράλληλα, εργάστηκε σε διάφορα κέντρα παροχής συµβουλευτικών υπηρεσιών στο Λονδίνο και στο Εθνικό Σύστηµα Υγείας (NHS) της Μεγ. Βρετανίας. The goal of the course is to make reading and writing easier and fun for students who are facing challenges in those areas and to get the students actively involved with the Greek language. Έχει παρακολουθήσει εξειδικευµένα σεµινάρια µε θέµα την αποκατάσταση ειδικών µαθησιακών δυσκολιών. Η κυρία Καλογήρου έχει δουλέψει µε µαθητές ηλικίας 5-14 ετών τόσο στο κοµµάτι της διάγνωσης, όσο και της αποκατάστασης των µαθησιακών δυσκολιών. Έχει δουλέψει µε παιδιά µε δυσλεξία, αυτισµό και σύνδροµο Asperger. Εργάζεται ως shadow teacher στο ΑCS Athens και συνεχίζει να δουλεύει ιδιωτικά µε παιδιά µε µαθησιακές δυσκολίες. Day: Saturdays Time: 10:00-12:00 Location: Elementary School Cafeteria Grades: K-2 The Saturday Creative Learning and Play provides a powerful opportunity for children to take part in various creative games, arts and crafts, and activities. Creativity through crafts is a wonderful way for students to express themselves, build self-esteem and to become more socially aware of their environment. Through play, art, games the students will tap into their intuition and feel successful through activities designed for their individual needs. Similarly, they will experience the freedom and release of creating from the heart. For grade K, emphasis will be given on developing skills in a co-operative setting. All areas of the student will be nurtured and explored. Some of the skills taught in group activities, which will also focus on individual needs; are awareness of shapes, colors, and improving dexterity. Students will build on physical/gross motor skills with hands on activities. They will work on social and constructive play and will learn to interact with other students through playing team games and board games. The students will further use their imagination and skills to create a product, learn problem solving skills, build structures, work in groups, and become creative through dramatic play. Social and emotional skills will be built upon through role plays, arts and crafts. This will also enhance and build friendships. All students will have a chance to work with different materials such as; clay, sand, paper-mache, color mixing, origami, Legos, wood, cloth and many more. Students will have fun, interact with each other, and at the same time learn how to create various objects on their own. Silliness, messiness and giggles are highly encouraged and welcomed! She holds a bachelor s degree in International Business and European Affairs with a minor in Economics. She has taken part in many seminars and workshops on Special Education and loves to work with children. Ms. Evloyias has been working with students for the past 3 years. She has tutored students from grades JK-10 th and has also worked with students of all ages in small groups and in one-to-one setting. Ms. Evloyias is currently working at ACS Athens, as a 3 rd grade teacher assistant. She has obtained certificates to train as a Family Constellations Therapist, Lifeline counselor and as a HIV/AIDS counselor. As a licensed psychologist (Health Professions Council of South Africa) she worked as a lifeline counselor at Lifeline in Pretoria South Africa, as an HIV/AIDS pre- and post- test counselor in Mamelodi Clinic, as an educator to train teachers in underprivileged environments to help children with learning difficulties and as a therapist at a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center. At Tshwane University of Technology she worked as a therapist in many areas such as drama therapy, group therapy, couples therapy, career counseling, individual therapy, lectured life skills and stress management skills to 1 st year students, and did psychometric evaluations and report writing. In Greece, as a licensed psychologist Angelik has worked and is continuing working independently with students with learning difficulties such as dyslexia, ADHD, autism/asperger s syndrome. Currently she is a shadow teacher at ACS and has worked in a group setting with students with learning difficulties at the OM afterschool program. Since living here from 2007 she has attended several seminars and workshops receiving specialized training in various teaching strategies for students on the autistic spectrum as well as students with learning difficulties.
