Welcome to Saint Nicholas on this Sunday, October 9, 2016 Today we commemorate: Third Sunday of Luke EPISTLE READING St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 6:1-10 Prokeimenon: The Lord will give strength to his people. Verse: Bring to the Lord, O sons of God, bring to the Lord honor and glory. BRETHREN, working together with him, then, we entreat you not to accept the grace of God in vain. For he says, "At the acceptable time I have listened to you, and helped you on the day of salvation." Behold, now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation. We put no obstacle in any one's way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry, but as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: through great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities, beatings, imprisonments, tumults, labors, watching, hunger; by purity, knowledge, forbearance, kindness, the Holy Spirit, genuine love, truthful speech, and the power of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left; in honor and dishonor, in ill repute and good repute. We are treated as impostors, and yet are true; as unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and behold we live; as punished, and yet not killed; as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing everything.

3rd Sunday of Luke The Gospel according to Luke 7:11-16 GOSPEL READING At that time, Jesus went to a city called Nain, and his disciples and a great crowd went with him. As he drew near to the gate of the city, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow; and a large crowd from the city was with her. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, "Do not weep." And he came and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, "Young man, I say to you, arise." And the dead man sat up, and began to speak. And he gave him to his mother. Fear seized them all; and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet has arisen among us!" and "God has visited his people!" 3rd Sunday of Luke

Anyone Can Love and Be Loved Date: October 1, 2016 Category: Meditations Author: Rev. Fr. Michael Tervo And as you wish that men would do to you, do so to them. If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again. But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the selfish. Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful. Luke 6:31-36 In this gospel passage Jesus says quite a remarkable thing. He tells us that simple love is not the full measure of being a Christian, rather, it is who and how we love that serves as a witness to the Gospel. Jesus says: "If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them." Even sinners those who reject God, those who are enemies not only to us, but also to the Most High love those who love them. Sinners love their children. They are loved by their mothers. Sinners love puppies or at least cats. Adolph Hitler was adored by his nephews and nieces. One does not need to know God to love and be loved. Loving and being loved in themselves are not signs of being a Christian. In fact, many times it is quite the opposite! Being unappreciated, despised, ignored, or left out as a result standing up for the Gospel but still responding with patience, understanding and generosity is the mark of being a Christian. We are not called to merely love only those who are like us. Our love, says the Lord, must go further. Our love must be without expectation of love in return... the kind of love we would receive from our enemies. Many people we meet may have nothing spiritually or materially to offer back. Not everyone has the means, knowledge or discernment to give back. Gratitude is something we all take for granted. But in reality, gratitude is rarely returned in the quality or quantity that we desire. Jesus sets the rules. "Do good. Lend, hoping for nothing in return. Be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful." If we love according to these rules we can speak the truths of the Gospel. If we can love as God does, "even unto the unthankful and the evil" we would have love that is potent. Our acts would convert, soften hearts, and awaken those who ears have not heeded the call of the Lord. It could make enemies aware of their sin, anger, apathy, coldness, hatred... in other words, it could make them aware of their distance from God and lead them to repentance. Loving our enemies may just make them stop being our enemies. Then again, it might not. If you love them and continue giving to them, even stubbornly, without expecting anything in return, you may still receive nothing! However, the person who is mean to you or treats you unjustly may be receptive to Christ because of you. At the very least you will receive your reward from God, who never forgets to repay kindness with kindness, especially to those who cooperate in His work of re-making all human beings into His sons and daughters. God will bless you all the more if you realize this and keep plugging away. In the statement, "Christians love their enemies" the verb, love, is not the most important word to describe Christians. It really doesn t tell or teach us that much. Rather it is the direct object of that verb, their enemies, that describes what true Christianity is by describing what the Christian does. It is not easy to take the high road and love those who cause us pain. This is where steadfast prayer and faith in God will help live our lives according to His will and achieve peace for our souls. Let us always remember the power of love as Saint Paul preached to the Corinthians, "And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love." (1 Corinthians 13:13)

Dear Reverend Fathers and Friends, Greetings! Please make every effort to attend our Bible Bowl planning meeting next Tuesday, October 11th from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm at Porto's Bakery and Café in Downey. If you cannot come yourself in person, please invite one of the parents of your 6th to 12th graders to attend this very important meeting. I have found that even if only one parent in a parish is interested and concerned about the Orthodox Christian formation and spiritual growth of the youth, then that parent can do wonders for the youth of that community, including organizing a team or teams from that parish for the Bible Bowl! This year the Southern California Pan-Orthodox Bible and Church History Tournament (Bible Bowl) is scheduled to take place on Saturday, December 3rd from 10 am to 2:30 pm at St. Paul's Greek Orthodox Church in Irvine! Porto's is a delightful family owned Bakery and Café at 8233 Firestone Blvd, Downey, CA 90241, 562-862-8888; www.portosbakery.com/, and I will plan to have a table with a sign saying "Bible Bowl" so that any parent can easily find our table. At our meeting on the 11th we will divide the texts among ourselves as to who will do the questions on which texts. So you can look over the Bible Bowl text packet and see if there are any two or three sections you would like to do the questions on--true/false, multiple choice, fill in the blank, etc. You may find all these texts at our Bible Bowl website at http://www.socalbiblebowl.org/. Out of your ten or so questions per text, please select the hardest one or two questions (usually a fill in the blank without any choices given unlike multiple choice) and mark them BONUS. We also hope to go over the Bible Bowl details--who will do the icebreakers; what gifts should we get this year for the first, second, and third place winning teams; possible registration procedures for individuals who are not part of a team, etc. We also hope to break down our Southern California parish listing so that each of us can contact a few parishes to see how many young people are coming from their parish to the Bible Bowl, etc. so that we can plan the luncheon that day, etc. Thank all of you for your devotion and dedication to our beloved Orthodox young people! Respectfully yours, Dean Langis Pastoral Assistant at St. Paul's Greek Orthodox Church in Irvine, California
