DECEMBER 25:THE NATIVITY OF OUR LORD GOD AND SAVIOUR JESUS CHRIST Great anticipation is building as we come closer to Christmas Day. The old remember the happy times in their youth when families gathered to celebrate, and the young ones have hopes for the presents and blessings that will be exchanged. This is the one time of the year that many give gifts of charity to those who are financially disadvantaged, remembering God's manifold blessings. Others surrender their burdens and sorrows for the joy that comes with the knowledge that "a Child is born" to the world, a Child Who brings light, solace and peace into the farthest corners of the earth. In this time of the year, as we rush from store to store searching for the perfect gift for our love ones, let us remember that this is the season when the Church hymns out tidings of great joy announcing that Christ is born! "Christ is born; glorify Him! Christ comes from heaven; go to meet Him! Christ is on earth; be exalted! Sing to the Lord, all the earth! And praise Him in gladness, O people, for He has been glorified!" This hymn describes how Orthodox Christians joyfully give thanks to the gift of Christ's miraculous Incarnation. The hymn calls us to act in a very conscious and decisive manner. As Christians we live our Faith and witness it to the world through our gladness and joy; like the single light burning brightly in the darkness. This time of the year is also a time of humility, which today's society has forgotten with the commercialization of this Christ-mass day. The Theotokos responded in humility when she consented to bear the Christ-child. Christ chose a humble cave in which to be born and become Man. The shepherds bowed in reverence and humility to the newborn King. The three wise kings traveled vast distances to pay homage to a baby in a cave used to shelter farm animals. O, what great and moving images these thoughts build! We, like the foreign kings and pure hearted Theotokos, must respond to our Christian Faith in simple humility at all times, and especially now during the Advent Season. Christ's birthplace also reminds us that He depends upon each of us to welcome Him in our very homes, and to make Him part of our lives and families. Rejoice over the message of humility, life, love, and the hope that Christ's life offers us. Do not let your hearts be cold and stomachs sated with the lifeless material things gathered and food eaten. But they were filled with confusion, and began to do penance. 5
25 : Ο Μέγας Βασίλειος θαυµάζοντας το γεγονός της Γεννήσεως του Χριστού, θέτει στο στόµα της Παναγίας τα ακόλουθα λόγια: «Πως να Σε ονοµάσω εγώ, θαυµαστό µου βρέφος; Τι θνητό όνοµα να δώσω στον καρπό του Αγίου Πνεύµατος; Να Σου προσφέρω θυµίαµα ή γάλα; Έχεις ανάγκη από τις µητρικές µου φροντίδες, ή να πέσω στα πόδια Σου και να Σε λατρεύω; Τι ανεξήγητη αντίθεση; 0 ουρανός είναι ο θρόνος Σου κι εγώ σε τοποθέτησα στα γόνατα µου. Σε βλέπω στην γη κι όµως δεν άφησες τον ουρανό. 0 ουρανός είναι εκεί, όπου ευρίσκεσαι Εσύ». Την απορία και την έκπληξη της Παναγίας συµµερίζεται και άγιος Βασίλειος. Και προσπαθώντας να βρει το µυστικό που πέτυχε την ένωση τόσο αντιθέτων πραγµάτων, καταλήγει ότι είναι Η ΤΑΠΕΙΝΩΣΗ! Από ταπείνωση ο Θεός έγινε άνθρωπος! Από την ταπείνωση Του η γη έγινε ουρανός! εν ανέβηκε ο άνθρωπος στον ουρανό. Κατέβηκε ο Θεός στην γη. Και έτσι µας έµαθε έµπρακτα, πως µπορεί η γη, από τόπος εξορίας να γίνει παράδεισος. Από ζούγκλα, να γίνει Βασιλεία του Θεού. Γι' αυτό και οι πρώτοι, που αξιώθηκαν να Τον προσκυνήσουν, ήταν οι ταπεινοί ποιµένες. Και οι γεµάτοι ταπεινό και ειλικρινές φρόνηµα αναζήτησης της αλήθειας, «µάγοι εξ ανατολών». Αυτή η αρετή της Ταπείνωσης είναι το µεγάλο µήνυµα της εορτής των Χριστουγέννων. Μόνο ο άνθρωπος που καλλιεργεί και αγαπάει αυτή την αρετή, µπορεί κάπως να νιώσει, τι έγινε εκείνη την παγωµένη νύχτα του εκέµβρη στην Βηθλεέµ της Ιουδαίας. Και µόνο µε αυτή την αρετή, µπορεί να αξιωθεί να δεχθεί στην καρδιά του τον Νεογέννητο Βασιλέα και Σωτήρα Χριστό. Αγίου Εφραίµ του Σύρου Η ΠΕΝΤΕ ΓΛΩΣΣΕΣ ΤΗΣ ΑΓΑΠΗΣ ΤΗΣ ΓΕΡΟΝΤΙΣΣΑΣ ΓΑΒΡΙΗΛΙΑΣ. H πρώτη είναι τo χαµόγελο... H δεύτερη είναι τα δάκρυα... H τρίτη είναι το άγγιγµα... H τέταρτη είναι η προσευχή... H πέµπτη είναι η αγάπη... Με αυτές τις πέντε γλώσσες γυρίζεις όλη τη γη και όλος o κόσµος είναι δικός σου. Όλους τους αγαπάς το ίδιο. 6
Η ΠΡΟΣ ΟΚΙΑ ΚΑΙ ΤΟ ΜΥΣΤΗΡΙΟ Παρόλο ότι τα Χριστούγεννα γιορτάζονται µες στη καρδιά του χειµώνα, ο χριστιανός αισθάνεται µια παράξενη ζέστα αυτές τις ηµέρες του «αγίου ωδεκαηµέρου». Αυτή η ζέστα είναι κάπως ακατάληπτη για τους πολλούς. Λένε ακόµα ότι τα Χριστούγεννα είναι σπιτική γιορτή, συµµαζώνει τα σκόρπια µέλη της οικογένειας, τα παιδιά και τα εγγόνια, να γιορτάσουν µαζί µε τους γονείς και τους παππούδες τους. Ναι, είναι κι αυτός ένας λόγος. Μα ο βαθύτερος λόγος είναι, ότι δίνουµε αυτές τις ηµέρες το σπήλαιο της ύπαρξής µας, για να γεννηθεί µέσα ο Χριστός. Η αιώνια πορεία του ανθρώπου προς τη λύτρωσή του, προς τη σωτηρία και τη θέωσή του, βρίσκει-µε τη γέννηση του Χριστού- ένα βέβαιο και στέρεο σηµείο ν ακουµπήσει την κουρασµένη αγωνία του: κι αυτό είναι ο σαρκωθείς Λόγος του Θεού. Το βασικότερο και κρισιµότερο σηµείο στη γιορτή των Χριστουγέννων είναι αυτή η σάρκωση, η ενανθρώπηση του Λόγου του Θεού. Ο χριστιανός πρέπει να ιδεί την θείαν «κένωσιν» του Θεού του, που γεννιέται γυµνός µέσα σ ένα σπήλαιο για να ενδύσει τον κόσµο. Εκείνος, που είναι ντυµένος τη γη και τον ουρανό, ξεντύθηκε για να ντύσει τον άνθρωπο. Εδώ είναι που ο άνθρωπος ψαύει το µυστήριο της ενώσεως του µε τον εξ ουρανού καταβάντα Θεόν. Ο άνθρωπος είναι πεσµένος στη λάσπη της γης. Ο Θεός βρίσκεται στα υπερουράνια σκηνώµατα. Πώς είναι δυνατόν ο άνθρωπος, να ενωθεί µε τον Θεόν, δίχως να κατεβεί Εκείνος, ή χωρίς ν ανεβεί αυτός ο χωµατένιος σβώλος γης λίγο πιο πάνω από τη λάσπη του; Ο Θεός, από φιλανθρωπία συγκαταβαίνει και γίνεται άνθρωπος, να ενωθεί µε τον άνθρωπο και να τον σώσει- ως εδώ είναι ο πρώτος όρος για τη σωτηρία του. Πρέπει όµως και ο άνθρωπος να θέλει και να αγωνίζεται για ν ανεβεί προς το Θεό, που του απλώνει το χέρι του. Αν ο άνθρωπος δεν απλώνει τα χέρια του προς τα υψηλά, το χέρι του Θεού θα µείνει µόνο, χωρίς ανταπόκριση στην ουράνια πρόσκληση της θεώσεως. Επιγραµµατικότατα ο µυστικός και θείος Μάξιµος ο οµολογητής, αποδίδει αυτή την δογµατικήν αλήθεια της Ορθοδόξου Εκκλησίας για τη σωτηρία του ανθρώπου: «τοσούτον τω ανθρώπω τον Θεόν ανθρωπίζεσθαι, όσον ο άνθρωπος εαυτόν τω Θεώ δι αγάπης δυνηθείς απεθέωσε. Και τοσούτον υπό Θεού τον άνθρωπον κατά νουν αρπάζεσθαι προς το γνωστόν, όσον ο άνθρωπος τον αόρατον φύσει Θεόν διά των αρετών εφανέρωσε». Κάθε χρόνο, που ακούω στην Εκκλησία να ψάλλεται το «Χριστός γεννάται, δοξάσατε», θαρρώ πως αγαπώ περισσότερο την υµνογραφία της ορθοδόξου εκκλησίας µας. Όλες οι εκκλησιαστικές λειτουργικές τέχνες, ως αναγωγικές, µεταρσιώνουν τον άνθρωπο µε µια ιεροπρεπή µυστικότητα. Όµως η τέχνη της υµνογραφίας, αντάµα µε την κατανυκτική βυζαντινή µουσική της Ορθοδοξίας, θαρρώ πως έχουν το χάρισµα να σου οδηγούν την ψυχή ως τι πόρτες του Παραδείσου. Η κάθε µια λέξη, από τ αγιασµένα τροπάρια της Εκκλησίας µας, κρύβει ένα µυστικό βάθος, ένα πλούτο πνευµατικής πείρας, που διδάσκει µε τον αµεσότερο τρόπο. Ένα πρόχειρο παράδειγµα, από την πρώτη φράση του πρώτου κανόνος των Χριστουγέννων: «Χριστός γεννάται»! αυτός ο ενεστώς χρόνος του «γεννάται», κι όχι «εγεννήθη»; Είναι πολύ συνηθισµένο βέβαια, στους ρήτορες, όπως λέγει ένας παλαιός ερµηνευτής, να «προσφέρουν τα περασµένα πράγµατα εις χρόνον ενεστώτα, για να δείξουν αυτά ως παρόντα εις τα οµµάτια των ακροατών και ακολούθως να κάµουν αυτούς περισσότερον θεατάς, παρά ακροατάς». Όµως, για τον καθένα χριστιανό που το ακούει, το διαβάζει ή το ψάλλει, εκείνο το «γεννάται» δηλώνει µια καινούργια γέννηση του Χριστού µέσα του: Τώρα, αυτή τη στιγµή «γεννάται» ο Χριστός, ετοίµασε το σπήλαιό σου- λέγει στον καθένα µας, διώξε από µέσα σου κάθε αµαρτωλή σου πράξη ή σκέψη και τρέξε να τον προϋπαντήσεις. Υψώσου από τη γη κι από τα γήινα, για να δώσεις την αγάπη σου όλη σ Εκείνον, που κατεβαίνει τώρα στη γη για σένα. Αν δεν έχεις τίποτ άλλο να του προσφέρεις για δώρο, όπως οι Μάγοι κι οι ποιµένες, βγάλε από πάνω σου τις αµαρτίες και πρόσφερέ τις θ αδειάσει έτσι ο τόπος «εν τω καταλύµατι» σου, για να φιλοξενήσεις τον Ερχόµενον ως νήπιον. Μην αργείς και µην αναβάλλεις, τώρα «Χριστός γεννάται», τώρα υποδέξου Τον στη φάτνη της ψυχής σου Όλοι οι χριστιανοί και οι «ψάλλοντες και οι αναγινώσκοντες και οι ακούοντες, τα τροπάρια των Χριστουγέννων- όπως λέγει ο άγ. Νικόδηµος ο αγιορείτης- ας παρακαλέσωµεν τον γεννηθέντα εσπότην και την αυτόν γεννήσασαν Θεοτόκον Μαρίαν, να µας αξιώσουν να περάσωµεν τας ηµέρας ταύτας, τας καλουµένας ωδεκαήµερον, µε ευταξίαν και σεµνότητα µε σωφρωσύνην και χριστοήθειαν, µε 7
ελεηµοσύνην και φιλοπτωχίαν και µε κάθε άλλην αγαθοεργίαν και αρετήν, καθώς πρέπει εις τους χριστιανούς. Όχι µε τρυφάς και ξεφαντώµατα, όχι µε τραγούδια και παιγνίδια, όχι µε χορούς και µε άλλα µιαρά, εις τα οποία χαίρει µεν και σκιρτά ο διάβολος, λυπείται δε και θρηνεί ο εσπότης Χριστός. Όστις, ίσως, δια τούτο εκλαυθµήρισεν εν τω σπηλαίω όταν εγεννήθη, διά να φανερώσει τας αταξίας των χριστιανών, αι οποίαι γίνονται κατ αυτάς τας ηµέρας Οι χριστιανοί κατά τας ηµέρας ταύτας του ωδεκαηµέρου, ενταµωνόµενοι λέγουν ο ένας εις τον άλλον: τώρα είναι ωδεκαήµερον, όθεν ας φάγωµεν, ας πίωµεν, ας ευθυµήσωµεν, τώρα είναι απόλυσις εις όλα τα φαγητά, όθεν ας ξεφαντώσωµεν. Πολλοί δε από αυτούς, αντί να ειπούν «απόλυσις» λέγουν «τώρα είναι απώλεια». Και τη αληθεία, συµβαίνει εκείνο το σοφόν γνωµικόν: «η γλώσσα αµαρτάνουσα τα αληθή λέγει», επειδή απώλεια είναι η τοιαύτη απόλυσις και κατάλυσις, διότι η απόλυσις των φαγητών προξενεί την τρυφή, η τρυφή προξενεί την µέθην και η µέθη προξενεί κάθε αµαρτίαν Ναι, πρέπει να ευθυµούν και να χαίρουν εν τω ωδεκαηµέρω, αλλ όχι σαρκικώς, αλλά πνευµατικώς, όχι διά φαγητά και πιοτά, αλλά διότι ηξιώθησαν να ιδούν βρέφος νεογέννητον τον εσπότην των απάντων και διότι µέλλουν (µετ ολίγας ηµέρας) να ιδούν τον αυτόν εσπότην βαπτιζόµενον εν τω Ιορδάνη. ιά τούτο λοιπόν, όσοι χριστιανοί αγαπούν την σωτηρίαν των, πρέπει να παρακαλούν το προαιώνιον βρέφος και την τούτον υπέραγνον Μητέρα, ίνα αξιωθούν να περάσουν µεν αναµαρτήτως τας δώδεκα ηµέρας ταύτας, να προσκυνούν δε θεαρέστως τα άγια Θεοφάνεια, χάριτι του γεννηθέντος και µετ ολίγον βαπτισθησοµένου Χριστού». Πόσο πνευµατικώτερα, αλήθεια, θα γιορτάζαµε τις γιορτές του ωδεκαηµέρου αν ήµασταν εδραιωµένοι στην Πατερική παράδοση της Ορθοδοξίας και ζούσαµε τη λειτουργική ζωή της Εκκλησίας µας! ΓΛΩΣΣΑΡΙ «ΕΡΩΣ ΟΡΘΟ ΟΞΙΑΣ» Π. Β. ΠΑΣΧΟΥ Ηµερολογίο: Το 44 π.χ. άρχισε να ισχύει το Ιουλιανό Ηµερολόγιο. Βάσει αυτού η Α Οικ. Σύνοδος καθόρισε τον εορτασµό του Πάσχα. Το ΙΣΤ αι. καθιερώθηκε το Γρηγοριανό Ηµερολόγιο το οποίο σταδιακά υιοθετήθηκε από τα διάφορα κράτη. Το νέο Ηµερολόγιο, η Ελλάδα το καθιέρωσε το 1923 και η Εκκλησία της Ελλάδας το Μάρτιο του 1924. Ένα τµήµα του πληρώµατος της Εκκλησίας παρέµεινε πιστό στο παλαιό Ηµερολόγιο, το Ιουλιανό. Αυτοί είναι οι λεγόµενοι παλαιοηµερολογίτες, οι οποίοι δεν έχουν «κοινωνίαν» µε καµία Αυτοκέφαλη Εκκλησία, ενώ θα µπορούσαν να έχουν, όπως έχει το Άγιον Όρος, το οποίο, παρ ότι ακολουθεί το παλαιό ηµερολόγιο, «κοινωνεί» και µε την Ελληνική και µε τις λοιπές Ορθόδοξες Εκκλησίες. 8
CHRISTMAS AGAIN! by Father James C. Meena Christmas will be upon us soon and I know some of you are thinking,... What, again? Yes, again! And I pray that you will celebrate many more Christmases to come. I become consciously aware of the fact that our job as Christians is to make ourselves infinitely more aware of the growing chasm between the meaning of Christmas as we understand it as Christians and as society interprets it as a secular holiday. If you don t believe that we are truly at war with a real enemy, please read the sixth chapter of St. Paul s letter to the Ephesians. He points out that we war not against human enemies but against sovereignties and powers that originate the darkness in the world, the spiritual army of evil in the heavens. That s why we must rely on God s armor, upon God s strength in order that we might resist. I ask you mothers and fathers, if you were in a crowd of people and someone attacked your children would it not be natural for you to stand in their defense. Is there a mother or a father who would not willingly put himself between his children and the danger that threatened those children. St. Paul is saying to you that there are dangers that are threatening you that you do not recognize, something other than automobiles running down the street or rapists or muggers or burglars or murderers, other than things that you can see with your eyes and touch with your hands. There are invisible forces that are constantly assaulting you and constantly assaulting your children. I was interested in noting in a recent article in the Christian Science Monitor that the use of drugs among young people from religiously oriented homes was considerably less than it was among young people that had little or no religious orientation. And it wasn t because these young people from religiously oriented homes were square. It s simply that they were not interested. Some of them may have tried some of the less dangerous drugs and found that it wasn t for them. They had something more basic, more profound upon which to rest their lives and that was their religious faith. So why don t you stand between the danger that assaults your children, the danger that you cannot see but that you know is there, and fortify your children with a whole armor of God in order that they might withstand the assault of the evil one? The only way you can do that is by being proper examples, by loving them and disciplining them as they need love and discipline, by instructing them, by walking before them as a guide walks before the untutored in an unfamiliar forest. Otherwise, your children like so many others will be statistics in a world where statistics are meaningless. They will be numbers in a computer, in a world where computers are becoming god. And then you must accept salvation from God to be your helmet and then receive the word of God from the Spirit to use as a sword, (Ephesians; 6:17). St. Paul sketches a fantastic graphic picture of the warfare, the constant struggle between us and them, we who are the children of God and they who are the children of Satan. Acknowledge this, and call upon God for help. Make every day God s day and every day make your life God s life and He will come into your life, and He will change your life and He will change it every day, not just once, but every time you call upon Him. He will make your life better, a little more meaningful so that the sword of the Spirit then has some value and meaning for you and the helmet of salvation will protect you and shelter you from the assault of the evil one. DID YOU KNOW - In the Orthodox Christian faith, Saint Stylianos the Hermit is considered the patron saint of children. He is of special help to children who are ill and to childless couples. He is also known as a protector of orphans. He is usually depicted in icons as an elderly bearded man holding a swaddled infant. St. Stylianos lived in Paphlagonia in the latter 6th and 7th century AD. His day is celebrated on the 26th of November. 9

Where is God? by Rev. Fr. George A. Aswad You are seated in a church pew. You are seated in the House of God. This morning you made a decision to visit God. - Why? When you visit a relative or friend, you go for a purpose usually with love to see and to talk to them. Sometimes you call or make an appointment so you are sure they are home and prepared to greet you. This is God s House. He is always here. The appointment is for every Sunday, same time, same place. This would be a most opportune time to discuss the question, Why are you here? ; to speak to you about being on time for your visit with God; about showing respect; participating in the conversation with God which is the Divine Liturgy; partaking of the refreshments, that which refreshes the soul, Holy Communion. But these subjects are for other sermons. This morning let us talk about the question that is on the lips of the oppressed; those in fear; the people that are in need; on the lips of all who view the world in all its misery; the question Where is God? Father Michael Shahin tells of his visit to a hospital in Syracuse to visit a parishioner. After a conversation, he asks her, Where is God? Her answer is, God is in Heaven. Father Michael turns to a little old lady in the next bed and asks, Where is God? Her answer is, God is here in my heart. Dearly beloved, I ask you, which lady had the greatest faith? A minister in Louisville, Kentucky. explained the presence of God to his parishioners this way: God is right here. I can reach out and shake hands with God. There is the story of a famous English surgeon. Lord Moynihan; who was invited to operate before a group of distinguished doctors. After the operation, one doctor asked him, How can you work so calmly and well, undisturbed by the onlookers? The surgeon s answer was, When I operate, there are just three people in the room: the patient, myself, and God. The true Christian must feel the very presence of God and the Lord. He must say, God is here in my heart! It is when we lose sight of God that we become atheists, alcoholics, adulterers, sinners, misguided and hypocritical followers of God a God we have lost in the dense fog of our spiritual blindness. I saw a war story on TV the other night an exciting drama: soldiers shooting guns; planes diving, spitting their pellets of death; trucks, tanks, and raging fires; people dying. Why, they were even killing women and defenseless children! It was a great production, except that it was real, and those lying in the streets were really dead! The looks of fear on the faces of the people were real. I was watching a news report on the war in Saigon. TV was bringing into our living room the awesome horror of war. Amid the noises of war and the screams of death, we cry out: Where is God? Has God left us? Is He dead? The answer is, God is here but the world has lost sight of Him. Do you want more proof, more evidence, about a Godless world? Read a newspaper or a magazine: War, Crime, Dope, Hate, Sex! Why do we sit back and watch some misguided designers disrobe our young women our daughters? Why do we allow publishers to print obscene and lewd pictures and risqué stories? Authors publish stories about the excitement of committing adultery, and the movies draw crowds by simply advertising. This movie is recommended for adult and mature audiences. Those responsible are getting rich, and why? Because the public, the people, Christians, you and I, will buy these things with our money and with our minds; we accept them, body and soul, and we say to our children: It is all right when you are adult and mature. The Church the one force capable of fighting back is not getting the full support of the people. For some reason, the message is not as appealing as the mighty forces that push God out of man s life. We do not accept the Church with our bodies and our souls, and by our actions we say to our children: God is some faint image in the pages of an ancient dusty Bible. He is a sleeping God who watches the world commit suicide, physically and morally. Tolstoy, when he was fifty years old, became very despondent. He could not write. He even feared to be alone with himself, for he had the compulsion to commit suicide. One day while walking in the woods, he 13
found himself thinking about life and the existence of God. He noticed that every time he really thought about the living God, every time he said out loud, Our Father in Heaven, he felt a joy, a new peace. He had once again found his God. An active Church is a living Church; a living Church is one in which God is alive because the congregation has Him in focus. Our church organizations bring us into contact with God and people. They make God real for us because we are working for Him through the Church. Through our organizations we become doers instead of viewers. Finally, our Church Services make God real for us. Prayers and fasting make God real for us. Communion offers us a living God, for Christ said, This is My Body, this is My Blood. This is the Living God.
