Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church Sunday, May 7, 2017 Sunday of the Paralytic SUNDAY OF THE PARALYTIC Close to the Sheep's Gate in Jerusalem, there was a pool, which was called the Sheep's Pool. It had round about it five porches, that is, five sets of pillars supporting a domed roof. Under this roof there lay very many sick people with various maladies, awaiting the moving of the water. The first to step in after the troubling of the water was healed immediately of whatever malady he had. It was there that the paralytic of today's Gospel way lying, tormented by his infirmity of thirty-eight years. When Christ beheld him, He asked him, "Wilt thou be made whole?" And he answered with a quiet and meek voice, "Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool." The Lord said unto him, "Rise, take up thy bed, and walk." And straightaway the man was made whole and took up his bed. Walking in the presence of all, he departed rejoicing to his own house. According to the expounders of the Gospels, the Lord Jesus healed this paralytic during the days of the Passover, when He had gone to Jerusalem for the Feast, and dwelt there teaching and working miracles. According to Saint John the Evangelist, this miracle took place on the Sabbath. Commemoration of the Precious Cross that appeared in the sky over Jerusalem in 351 A.D. On this day in the year 351, not long after Cyril had succeeded Maximus as Archbishop of Jerusalem, during the reign of Constantius, the son of Saint Constantine the Great, on the day of Pentecost, the sign of the Cross appeared over Jerusalem. IN THOSE DAYS, as Peter went here and there among them all, he came down also to the saints that lived at Lydda. There he found a man named Aeneas, who had been bedridden for eight years and was paralyzed. And Peter said to him, "Aeneas, Jesus Christ heals you; rise and make your bed." And immediately he rose. And all the residents of Lydda and Sharon saw him, and they turned to the Lord. Now there was at Joppa a disciple named Tabitha, which means Dorcas. She was full of good works and acts of charity. In those days she fell sick and died; and when they had washed her, they laid her in an upper room. Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, hearing that Peter was there, sent two men to him entreating him, "Please come to us without delay." So Peter rose and went with them. And when he had come, they took him to the upper room. All the widows stood beside him weeping, and showing tunics and other garments which Dorcas made while she was with them. But Peter put them all outside and knelt down and prayed; then turning to the body he said, "Tabitha, rise." And she opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter she sat up. And he gave her his hand and lifted her up. Then calling the saints and widows he presented her alive. And it became known throughout all Joppa, and many believed in the Lord. At that time, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, in Hebrew called Bethesda which has five porticoes. In these lay a multitude of invalids, blind, lame, paralyzed, waiting for the moving of the water; for an angel of the Lord went down at certain seasons into the pool, and troubled the water; whoever stepped in first after the troubling of the water was healed of whatever disease he had. One man was there, who had been ill for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him and knew that he had been lying there a long time, he said to him, "Do you want to be healed?" The sick man answered him, "Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is troubled, and while I am going another steps down before me." Jesus said to him, "Rise, take up your pallet, and walk." And at once the man was healed, and he took up his pallet and walked. Now that day was the sabbath. So the Jews said to the man who was cured, "It is the sabbath, it is not lawful for you to carry your pallet." But he answered them, "The man who healed me said to me, 'Take up your pallet, and walk.' "They asked him, "Who is the man who said to you, 'Take up your pallet, and walk'?" Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, as there was a crowd in the place. Afterward, Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, "See, you are well! Sin no more, that nothing worse befall you." The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him.

Αν ο Θεός μας κρίνει κατά τα έργα μας, χαθήκαμε! Άγιος Βαρσανούφιος της Όπτινας Μιά φορά ήρθε σ 'εμένα να εξομολογηθεί ένας μεγαλόσχημος μοναχός και μου είπε: -Πάτερ, απελπίστηκα. Δεν βλέπω στον εαυτό μου καμία αλλαγή προς το καλύτερο. Και πήρα και το μεγάλο αγγελικό σχήμα. Και ξέρω ότι ο Θεός θα ελέγξει λεπτομερώς ποιός ήταν πραγματικός μοναχός και ποιός μόνο φορέας του σχήματος. Πώς να διορθωθώ; Πως να είμαι νεκρός για την αμαρτία; Αισθάνομαι μεγάλη αδυναμία. -Έχεις δίκιο, του είπα. Αν ο Θεός μας κρίνει κατά τα έργα μας χαθήκαμε, επειδή δεν έχουμε τίποτα να του παρουσιάσουμε. -Υπάρχει άραγε κάποια ελπίδα σωτηρίας; -Σίγουρα υπάρχει. Να κάνεις όσο πιο συχνά την προσευχή σου και αφέσου στα χέρια του Θεού. -Ποιό όμως το όφελος της προσευχής, εαν δεν συμμετέχει ο νους και η καρδιά; -Υπάρχει τεράστιο όφελος. Η προσευχή έχει πιο πολλά σκαλοπάτια. Από την απλή εκφώνηση των λέξεων της προσευχής μέχρι τη θαυματουργική προσευχή. Ακόμη και αν βρισκόμαστε στο χαμηλότερο σκαλοπάτι της προσευχής, ακόμη και τότε μας είναι χρήσιμη και σωτήρια. Οι ραδιουργίες του εχθρού απομακρύνονται από τον άνθρωπο που προσεύχεται. «Πίστις! Θείον Δώρον» (Αγ. Νεκταρίου) Πίστις! Θείον δώρον, καρπός της θείας αποκαλύψεως, γνώσις μυστηρίων, σοφία ουράνιος, διδάσκαλος των θείων αληθειών, Κλίμαξ Ουρανού και Γης, σύνδεσμος Θεού και ανθρώπων, θείας φιλίας και αγάπης τεκμήριον, ουρανίων αγαθών μεταδόσεως έκφρασις! Τίσι λόγοις την δύναμίν σου έξείπω; Τίσι φθέγμασι τας ενεργείας σου φθέγξωμαι; Ή δύναμίς σου αληθώς θεία, ως θείον δώρον, ή δε ενέργεια σου άπειρος, ίση προς την θείαν βούλησιν, ότι θεία δυνάμει ενεργεί όσα και να νοηθώσι αδύνατον υπό των ανθρώπων. Σύ ως φως φωτίζεις τους έσκοτισμένους την διάνοιαν. Σύ ποδηγετείς τους ζητοϋντας εν ταϊς Γραφαϊς την άλήθειαν, και καθίστασαι οδηγός ασφαλής προς γνώσιν. Σύ διαθερμαίνεις δι' έρωτος θείου τας καρδίας και άνάπτεις εν αύταίς την θείαν άγάπην. Σύ τίκτεις την αληθή ελπίδα, μυστικώς ελέγχουσα και φανερούσα των έλπιζομένων την ύπόστασιν. Παναγία μου να'χεις χαρά. Σε χαιρετάμε. Δεν είμαστε αχάριστοι. Μας έκανες τόσο μεγάλο καλό. Έφερες τον Θεό στον κόσμο! Δε θα σου πούμε ένα "ευχαριστώ"; Ένα "χαίρε"; Που κρατάει 7-8 λεπτά; 7-8 λεπτά κρατάνε να τους πεις τους Χαιρετισμούς. Να λέμε τους Χαιρετισμούς. Αυτή είναι πολύ ωραία προσευχή. Αρχοντική προσευχή. Χωρίς καθόλου ζητιανιά. Χωρίς καθόλου παρακλήσεις και ικεσίες και "θέλω κείνο, κάνε τ'αλλο". Δεν θέλω τίποτα! Παναγία μου σε χαιρετώ μόνο. Χαίρε Νύμφη ανύμφευτε. The Intercessions of the Departed Saints By St. Nikolai Velimirovich "This done, in like manner there appeared a man with gray hairs and exceeding glorious, who was of a wonderful and excellent majesty. Then Onias answered, saying, 'This is a lover of the brethren, who prays much for the people and for the holy city, to wit, Jeremiah the prophet of God'" (2 Maccabees 15:13-14). This was the vision which was seen by the courageous Judas Maccabee. The first to appear to him from the other world was Onias the high priest and after that the holy Prophet Jeremiah. Just as Moses and Elijah were seen in glory by the apostles on Mt. Tabor, thus, at one time Judas Maccabee saw the Prophet Jeremiah in glory. Not even before the resurrected Christ did God the Merciful leave men without proof of life after death. In Christian times, however, those proofs are without number and without end. Whoever, even after all of this, doubts in life after death, that one stands under the curse of his sin as under his grave stone. As inanimate things cannot see the light of day, so neither can he see who doubts life which is and to which there is no end. But, behold with what kind of glory is the Prophet Jeremiah wedded in the other life! "Gray hairs and exceeding glorious." Around him a certain indescribable dignity, a certain bright aureole, a certain inexpressible pleasure and beauty. He who was dragged and beaten by men to whom he communicated and imparted the will of God and who was a captive in prison and a martyr in a fetid hole and who was ridiculed as folly and was tried as a traitor and finally, as a transgressor, was stoned to death. However, one is the judgment of sinners, another is the judgment of God. The most humiliated among men became wedded with angelic glory before God. And yet behold how heaven calls one, whom the earth called false, a traitor and a transgressor! "Lover of the brethren" this is how heaven called him. "Lover of the brethren" who prays much for the people. Finally, see how the saints in heaven pray to God for us! Not sleeping, they are praying for us while we are asleep; not eating, they are praying for us while we are eating and have over-eaten; not sinning, they are praying for us while we are sinning. O brethren, let us be ashamed before so many of our sincere friends. Let us be ashamed, let us be ashamed of so many prayers for us by the saints and let us join with their prayers. O Lord All-wonderful, forgive us our sinful slothfulness and dullness. To You be glory and thanks always. Amen. We Are All Patients In A Hospital By St. Nikolai Velimirovich At the time of the First Ecumenical Council [Nicaea, 325 A.D.], the quarreling clerics wrote accusations one against the other and presented them to the emperor. Emperor Constantine received all of these accusations and not opening them, burned them over a flaming candle. To the amazement of those around him, the emperor said: "If I would see with my own eyes a bishop, a priest or a monk in a sinful act, I would cover him with my cloak, so that no one would ever see his sin." Thus, this great Christian emperor embarrassed the scandalmongers and sealed their mouths. Our Faith prohibits us to be spies of the sins of others and stresses that we be merciless judges of our own sins. The sick person in the hospital is concerned with his own particular malady so that he has neither the will nor the time to question others who are ill or to mock their illness. Are we not all in this world as patients in a hospital? Does not our own common sense underline that we look at our own illness and not at another's illness? Let no one think that they will be cured of their illness in the other world. This world is merely a hospital and a place for healing and, in that world, there is no hospital; there is only a mansion or only a prison.

This means that only baptized, chrismated and observant Orthodox faithful receive communion in our churches. At the same time, we warmly welcome all non- Orthodox to join us in prayer and celebration, and humbly offer to all present the Antidoro bread of fellowship at the end of the service. We offer this important symbol instead of the Gifts, in the words of the Apostle Paul, Till we all come to the unity of the Faith (Eph. 4.13).

Saint Herman of Alaska On Love For God Once the Elder was invited on board a frigate that had come from St. Petersburg. The captain of the frigate was a man quite learned, highly educated; he had been sent to America by Imperial command to inspect all the colonies. With the captain were some 25 officers, likewise educated men. In this company there sat a desert-dwelling monk of small stature, in an old garment, who by his wise conversation brought all his listeners to such a state that they did not know how to answer him. The captain himself related: "We were speechless fools before him!" Father Herman gave them all one common question: "What do you, gentlemen, love above all, and what would each of you wish for his happiness?" Diverse answers followed. One desired wealth, one glory, one a beautiful wife, one a fine ship which he should command, and so on in this fashion. "Is it not true," said Father Herman at this, "that all your various desires can be reduced to one - that each of you desires that which, in his understanding, he considers best and most worthy of love?" "Yes, it is so," they all replied. "Well, then, tell me," he continued, "can there be anything better, higher above everything, more surpassing everything and in general more worthy of love, than our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, who created us, perfectly adorned us, gave life to all, supports all, nourishes and loves all, who Himself is love and more excellent than all men? Should not a person then love God high above all and desire and seek Him more than all else?" All began to say: "Well, yes! That is understood! That speaks for itself!" "And do you love God?" the Elder then asked. All replied: "Of course, we love God. How can one not love God?" "And I, sinful one, for more than forty years have been striving to love God, and cannot say that I perfectly love Him," answered Father Herman; then he began to show how a person should love God. "If we love someone," he said, "we always think of him, strive to please him, day and night our heart is occupied with this subject. Is it thus that you, gentlemen, love God? Do you often turn to Him, do you always think of Him, do you always pray to Him, and fulfill His holy commandments?" It had to be acknowledged that they did not! "For our good, for our happiness," concluded the Elder, "at least let us make a promise to ourselves, that from this day, from this hour, from this very moment we shall strive to love God above all, and fulfill His holy will!" Behold what an intelligent, superb conversation Father Herman conducted in society; without doubt this conversation must have imprinted itself on the hearts of his listeners for their whole life!
