Georgiadou Content: For most of the citizens of Cyprus, it is the happy ending to the long trek towards the United Europe. The reasons for the desire for accession are varied; however the desire for following this direction continues to be strong, because for most people it is expressed as a deep esoteric need rather than as state foreign policy. For Cyprus, accession is not simply a positive step towards the future, or a voluntary act of acceptance of unity in diversity; it is the return to the womb where it belongs. Text in English: 1:13-1:31 -I believe that the decision of the government for our accession to the EU was correct, on condition that we be careful regarding the solution to the Cyprus Issue, so as not to have a recurrence of the old problems of 1963 and 1974. 1:31-1:47 - To begin with, the decision was based on the political aspect of the Cyprus issue and furthermore, we cannot exist on our own, without accessing a broader alliance. Consequently, I believe that the EU was the best solution. 1:48-1:58 - We are looking forward to Cyprus being a member of the EU. There is no greater wish than this us matching their way of life and so on...
1:58-2:15 - A great many opportunities for students to go abroad for studies will arise. Things will be easier for us. The passport of the Republic of Cyprus will be changed and our trips to Europe will become much easier. On the other hand, taxes will be imposed and we will be having a lot of foreigners coming in, that I don t like. 2:16-2:34 -Personally, I think in some aspects accession is good, while in others will have a negative outcome. Yes, we always wanted to access Europe; there are many advantages to be gained by our becoming Europeans at long last, by not having passports and all these things, by our being able to travel like all Europeans do however; there are disadvantages as well. 2:35-2:43 -Cyprus is a small island, by accessing the E.U. new horizons will open up. Our sense of security that is a capital issue! 2:43-2:44 - Well better study opportunities! 2:33-3:10 -It is not just that we have 30 years of occupation incyprus; it is the only case where the Greeks of Cyprus and Greece managed to do something positive for Cyprus by the accession to the EU. From then on, it was an issue of our own politics, of the joint politics of Cyprus and Greece, for looking at things in perspective. The EU is very powerful, that goes without saying, while we are a small island in need of support on the part of the Great Powers! 3:45-3:53 -In a way, yes, because many more opportunities for employment will arise for future generations, at least, for our children, for students 3:55-3:59 -Personally, I believe that no information is offered by the state regarding what s going on with the EU. 4:00-4:14 -We have to access the EU. It depends, however, on the conditions of accession. If it would be to our benefit, then we should access Europe. If not, we should not do it. My view? It would be to our interest 100%. If, however, the problems with the Turks continue, there will be reverberations. 4:14-4:24 -I think that things might be a bit difficult at first, during the first stages of accession in the EU; then we will reap the fruits of the EU! This is what I believe. 4:25-4:40 -In the short term there might be a cost, but in the long run the benefits will be so great that they will counterbalance any short-term problems that might arise. 4:40-4:45 -From what I hear, the cost of living will rise and this is a negative. 4:45-5:10 -Definitely, the conditions and needs of the EU, which we are accessing are different, not in economic issues but also I believe in issues concerning lifestyle as well. Europeans differ from Cypriots in matters of attitude. The
economic problems can be overcome when we will be able to see things under a positive light and be able to handle these kinds of situations. 5:10-5:18 -At the beginning we will be faced with problems the agriculture for example, that will reflect to other services as well and will be dealt a blow, in the future, though, I believe that things will improve. 5:19-5:23 -I believe that when you sit with the rich you become richer yourself! 5:23-5:42 -At first we will be faced with economic problems, because tourism will be affected negatively, in our line of work. Tourists will be visiting the occupied areas as well, where things are cheaper for the time being. Now, regarding the future, we are looking forward to European aid, so as to live a better life!
Text in Greek: 1:13-1:31 -Πιστεύω ότι ήταν σωστή η απόφαση της κυβέρνησης να ενταχθούµε στην Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση, εφόσον προσέξουµε τη λύση που θα έχουµε µε το Κυπριακό, να µην επανέλθουµε πίσω στα παλιά προβλήµατα που είχαµε το 1963, τέλος πάντων, και το 1974. 1:31-1:47 Κατ αρχήν η απόφαση βασιζόταν στο πολιτικό µέρος του Κυπριακού και δεύτερο, δεν µπορούµε να είµαστε µόνοι µας, χωρίς να ενταχθούµε σε µιαν ευρύτερη συµµαχία, και πιστεύω ότι η καλύτερη λύση ήταν η Ε.Ε. 1:48-1:58 Θα χουµε (προσβλέπουµε) να κάνουµε την Κύπρο µέλος της Ε.Ε. εν υπάρχει καλύτερη επιθυµία απ αυτό... όσον αφορά τον τρόπο που ζουν, ξέρω γω. 1:58-2:15 Ή µπορούν να δοθούν πολλές ευκαιρίες σε φοιτητές να πάνε στο εξωτερικό να σπουδάσουν, είναι πιο εύκολο, το Κυπριακό διαβατήριο θ αλλάξει, να µπορούµε να πάµε Ευρώπη πολύ πιο εύκολα... κι όχι... µπαίνουν taxes, αλλάζει ο τρόπος ζωής στην Κύπρο, έρχονται πάρα πολλοί ξένοι στην Κύπρο, το οποίο µ αρέσει... 2:16-2:34 -Εγώ προσωπικά, πιστεύω και ναι και όχι. Το ναι, γιατί πάντα θέλαµε να µπούµε στην Ευρώπη, έχει αρκετά θετικά το να είµαστε επιτέλους, να θεωρούµαστε κι εµείς Ευρωπαίοι, να µην υπάρχουν τα διαβατήρια, νοµίζω κι όλ αυτά, να µπορούµε να ταξιδεύουµε όπως όλοι οι Ευρωπαίοι... αλλά υπάρχουν και τ αρνητικά, φυσικά... 2:35-2:43 -Η Κύπρος είναι ένα µικρό νησί, µε την Ε.Ε. ανοίγουν νέοι ορίζοντες... Η ασφάλειά µας; Μεγάλο κεφάλαιο...! 2:43-2:44 -Ε... καλύτερες σπουδές...! 2:44-3:10 - εν είναι το µόνο που... 30 χρόνια κατοχής στην Κύπρο, είναι η µόνη περίπτωση που... τουλάχιστον ο Ελληνισµός της Κύπρου και
της Ελλάδας, κατάφερε να κάµει κάτι θετικό για την Κύπρο Με την ένταξη στην Ε.Ε. Απ εκεί και πέρα, ήταν θέµα πολιτικής δικής µας, της Ελληνικής πολιτικής που έπρεπε να έχει και η Κύπρος και η Ελλάδα µαζί, να βλέπει πιο µπροστά τα πράγµατα. Οι πολιτικοί πρέπει να βλέπουν, τουλάχιστον, µια δεκαετία µπροστά. 3:11-3:25 -Πιστεύω ήταν σωστή απόφαση, εκ µέρους της πολιτικής ηγεσίας, λόγω του ότι, εκτός από τα οικονοµικά οφέλη που θα αποκοµίσουµε σαν Κύπρος, ταυτόχρονα υπάρχουν και πολιτικά οφέλη, λόγω του προβλήµατος που έχουµε. 3:25-3:33 -Νοµίζω ήταν σωστή, παρ όλο που... µέχρι τώρα µόνο φόρους πληρώνουµε, προσβλέπουµε ότι... µε την ένταξή µας θα είναι κάπως καλύτερα τα πράγµατα... 3:34-3:45 -Πιστεύω ναι, βέβαια... για να σώσουµε την πατρίδα µας! Η Ε.Ε. έχει µεγάλη δύναµη, βέβαια! Εµείς, είµαστε ένα µικρό νησί, χρειαζόµαστε βοήθεια από µεγάλες υνάµεις! 3:45-3:53 -Από µία άποψη ναι! ιότι θα έχουµε πιο πολλές ευκαιρίες για εργασία, οι µελλοντικοί τέλος πάντων, τα παιδιά µας, οι φοιτητές µας,... 3:53-3:59 -Προσωπικά, πιστεύω ότι δεν υπάρχει ενηµέρωση από το κράτος για το τι συµβαίνει µε την Ε.Ε. 4:00-4:14 -Πρέπει να µπούµε στην Ε.Ε. Εξαρτάται µε τι συνθήκες θα µπούµε στην Ε.Ε. Αν µας συµφέρει να µπούµε... αν δε µας συµφέρει να µην µπούµε. Αλλά, 100% θα µας συµφέρει. Αν όµως εξακολουθήσουν τα προβλήµατα µε τους Τούρκους, θα έχουµε επιπτώσεις. 4:14-4:24 -Μάλλον, µπορεί να δυσκολευτούµε λεω, στα πρώτα στάδια, στο πρώτο διάστηµα που θα ενταχθούµε στην Ε.Ε., µετά όµως θα έρθουν και τα ωφελήµατα από την Ε.Ε., πιστεύω...
4:25-4:40 -Βραχυπρόθεσµα, πιθανόν να έχουµε κάποιο κόστος, αλλά πιστεύω, µακροπρόθεσµα, τα οφέλη θα είναι αρκετά, που θα ισοβαθµήσουν, ή και θα ισοσκελίσουν οποιαδήποτε βραχυπρόθεσµα προβλήµατα θα παρουσιαστούν... 4:40-4:45 -Απ ότι ακούω, όλα θα γίνουν πιο ακριβά και τούτο είναι αρνητικό. 4:45-5:10 -Οπωσδήποτε, άλλες οι συνθήκες, άλλες οι ανάγκες που έχει η Ε.Ε., που πρέπει να ενταχθούµε, όχι σε θέµατα οικονοµικά, αλλά και σε θέµατα -εγώ πιστεύω- συµπεριφοράς. Άλλο οι Ευρωπαίοι στη συµπεριφορά, κι άλλο οι Κύπριοι στη συµπεριφορά. Τα οικονοµικά µπορούν να ξεπεραστούν όταν µπορούµε κι εµείς και βλέπουµε τα πράµατα θετικά και να µπορέσουµε ν αντεπεξέλθουµε στις καταστάσεις τούτες. 5:10-5:18 -Στο πρώτο στάδιο θα έχουµε πτώσεις, γιατί θες η γεωργία µας, τ0 να, τ άλλο, θα θιχτούν πολλές υπηρεσίες, αλλά στο µέλλον πιστεύω ότι κάπου θα (καλυτερέψουν τα πράγµατα). 5:19-5:23 -Πιστεύω, άµα είσαι µε τους πλούσιους, πιστεύω ότι γίνεσαι κι εσύ πλουσιότερος! 5:23-5:42 -Πρώτα, θα δυσκολευτούµε οικονοµικά, διότι θα επηρεαστεί ο τουρισµός, όσον αφορά τη δουλειά τη δική µας... θα πηγαίνουν και στα κατεχόµενα, που έχουν πολύ πιο φτηνές τιµές από εµάς, τώρα... στο µέλλον... ελπίζουµε ότι θα έχουµε βοήθεια από άλλες χώρες, ούτως ώστε να έχουµε µια πιο καλή ζωή...!
