The program is an effort to encourage greater fellowship among parishioners by asking families, individuals or groups to provide refreshments after church services. For more information, see the insert or call Maria Anastasiou at 504-456-1780. SAINT BASIL THE GREAT was born about the end of the year 329 in Caesarea of Cappadocia to a family renowned for their learning and holiness. His parents were Basil and Emily. His mother Emily and his grandmother Macrina are saints of the Church, together with all his brothers and sisters Macrina, Gregory of Nyssa, Peter of Sebastia, and Naucratius. Basil studied in Constantinople and then in Athens, where he formed a friendship with the young Gregory, later called "the Theologian." Abandoning his worldly career, Basil chose to embrace the ascetical life and visited the monks in Egypt, Palestine, Syria, and Mesopotamia. Upon returning to Caesarea, he departed to a hermitage on the Iris River in Pontus and wrote his ascetical homilies. About the year 370, he was elected bishop and was entrusted with the Church of Christ, which he tended for eight years, living in voluntary poverty and strict asceticism, having no other care than to defend holy Orthodoxy as a worthy successor of the Apostles. The Emperor Valens and the Eparch of the East Modestus, who supported the Arians, tried with threats of exile and of torments to bend the Saint to their own confession when Arianism was at its strongest. But, he set all their malice at naught, and in his willingness to give himself up to every suffering for the sake of the Faith, showed himself to be a martyr by volition. Modestus, amazed at Basil's fearlessness in his presence, said that no one had ever so spoken to him. "Perhaps," answered the Saint, "you have never met a bishop before." The Emperor Valens himself was almost won over by Basil's dignity and wisdom. When Valens' son fell gravely sick, he asked Saint Basil to pray for him. The Saint promised that his son would be restated if Valens agreed to have him baptized by the Orthodox; Valens agreed, Basil prayed, and the son was restored. But afterwards, the Emperor had him baptized by Arians, and the child soon died. Later, Valens, persuaded by his counselors, decided to send the Saint into exile because he would not accept the Arians into communion; but, his pen broke when he was signing the edict of banishment. He tried a second time and a third, but the same thing happened. The Emperor was filled with dread and tore up the document, and Basil was not banished. The truly great Basil, spent with extreme ascetical practices and continual labors at the helm of the church, departed to the Lord on January 1, 379, at the age of forty-nine. His writings are replete with wisdom and erudition, and his doctrines concerning the mysteries both of the creation and of the Holy Trinity are rich. Because of the majesty and keenness of his eloquence, he is honored as "the revealer of heavenly things" and "the Great." Saint Basil is also celebrated on January 30 with Saints Gregory the Theologian and John Chrysostom.

CATHEDRAL OFFICE NEW YEAR SCHEDULE The Cathedral office will be closed tomorrow, Monday, January 2, for New Year's. In case of an emergency, please call 504-941-7681. HOUSE BLESSINGS To have your home and/or business blessed, fill out the enclosed form and return it to the Cathedral office as soon as possible. Please DO NOT EMAIL OR CALL for an appointment. Instead, submit the form, denoting a day and time that is convenient for you, and the office will call to confirm the appointed schedule for the blessing. Father George would like to bless as many homes as possible and for this reason wishes to adhere to a tight schedule. He kindly asks that you not expect him to stay for a meal and thanks you in advance for understanding. PHILOPTOCHOS SENIOR CITIZENS LUNCHEON Seniors are invited to the next Senior Citizens Luncheon on Thursday, January 19, at 11:30 am in the Coffee Room. Luncheon sponsors are Debbie and Vasilis Funti. Philoptochos thanks them for their support and looks forward to having all seniors attend. Plan now to come and enjoy a delicious meal and have fun playing bingo. ARE YOU A MEMBER OF PHILOPTOCHOS? With renewed enthusiasm toward the mission of Philoptochos, the chapter begins its membership drive for 2017. All ladies are invited to become proud members in the organization, attend meetings, and join in helping others. The next Philoptochos meeting is Saturday, January 7, at 10:30 am in the Coffee Room. ANNUAL CUTTING OF THE VASILOPITA Philoptochos will hold its annual Cutting of the Vasilopita after Divine Liturgy on SUNDAY, JANUARY 15. Similarly, other Philoptochos chapters across the Archdiocese host Vasilopita events in honor of Saint Basil the Great to benefit Saint Basil Academy in Garrison, New York. One of the most beautiful and inspiring traditions of our Greek Orthodox Church is the observance of Vasilopita in Saint Basil s honor. A most wise and compassionate clergyman, Saint Basil was the first person in history to establish a home for children. His feast day combines the cheer and happiness of the New Year with the glory of the birth of Christ and the Epiphany into what is known in the Orthodox Church as the Vasilopita Observance, symbolizing the joy of life everlasting. After presentation of the Vasilopita in church, Philoptochos members invite all parishioners to receive a piece of Saint Basil s bread at the reception in the Coffee Room. REGULAR GENERAL ASSEMBLY The first 2017 General Assembly will be held in the Hellenic Cultural Center SUNDAY, JANUARY 22, 2017, immediately following Divine Liturgy. The agenda will include discussion and vote on the Proposed Budget for 2017, as well as regular business items. All members in Good Standing are encouraged to attend. Message from Father George As the Father has sent me, so I send you. (John 20:21) January 1, 2017, Feast of Saint Basil and New Year Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ, As we welcome the new year on the Feast of Saint Basil, we are strengthened and inspired by the mighty acts of God in 2016. One of our tremendous blessings was the gathering in Nashville for the 43rd Biennial Clergy Laity Congress of our Holy Archdiocese. Our theme for the Congress was You are the Voice of Christ in a Changing World, and we continue our focus on this theme as we plan our ministry and service in the year to come. The commemoration of Saint Basil the Great on this day provides us with an example of holiness, leadership, and service that embodies this theme. From his prayerful manner of life and his deep faith and spiritual insight, we see a man, who knew Christ and lived in His presence. Through his sermons, theological treatises, and pastoral diakonia, he was the voice of Christ. He lived during a time marked by theological controversies and transitions related to Christianity and the Church. Many people had significant physical and spiritual needs. In this very challenging and changing period, Saint Basil offered wisdom, comfort, and guidance by the grace of God. In following the witness of Saint Basil and many other Fathers of the Church who have been the voice of Christ, we are sent by our Lord into the world and into this new year to share the Gospel of faith and love, to bring comfort and healing with God s grace, and to help others know Christ and His blessings of peace and life. He sends us as His voice into a world that continues to change. At the beginning of each calendar year we are reminded of this rapid change as we survey the events of the last twelve months. We are called as Orthodox Christians to meet this change with grace and truth. We do this as we commit to the timeless mission of the people of God to live and proclaim the Gospel. We also do this as seen in the breadth and substance of our ministries and through expanding and adapting our work to meet contemporary needs. We are sent by Christ with a message of hope and life and with the wisdom to navigate a changing and challenging world while sharing His grace in effective ways. On this Feast of Saint Basil we also share the voice of Christ through our support of our beloved Saint Basil Academy. For over seventy years this has been a place of peace, faith, and nurture for children and youth, offering them love and care in the name and presence of Christ. May we offer our prayers for the directors, benefactors, and residents of the Academy. As we participate in the cutting of the Vasilopita in our communities, may we respond generously to the call of our Ladies Philoptochos Society to support this vital ministry. (In our New Orleans parish, this will take place on January 15, 2017.) May we also affirm our commitment to be the voice of Christ in all that we do. Certainly, we will be His voice through the witness of our worship; but, let us also be His voice through the growth and quality of our ministry to families, children, youth, and senior adults. Let us be His voice through the quality of our educational work and resources. Let us be His voice in our outreach to the unchurched. Let us be His voice in our homes, schools, and workplaces. Let us be His voice in traditional, unique, and inspiring ways so that others will find life and peace in Him. With paternal love in Christ, DEMETRIOS, Archbishop of America

Apolytikion of the Feast Tone 1 Our human form You have taken on Yourself without change, O greatly-compassionate Master, though being God by nature; fulfilling the Law, You willingly received circumcision in the flesh, that You might end the shadow and roll away the veil of our sinful passions. Glory be to Your goodness unto us. Glory be to Your compassion. Glory, O Word, to Your inexpressible condescension. Apolytikion of the Saint Tone 1 Your voice resounded throughout the world that received your word by which, in godly manner, you taught dogma, clarified the nature of beings, and set in order the character of people. Venerable father, Royal Priesthood, intercede to Christ God to grant us great mercy. Apolytikion of the Holy Trinity Plagal Tone 4 Blessed are You, O Christ our God, who made fishermen all-wise, sending upon them the Holy Spirit and, through them, netting the world. O Loving One, glory to You. Kontakion of the Feast Tone 3 Now the Lord of all did undergo circumcision, in His goodness cutting off the sins and failings of mortals. He this day gave salvation unto the whole world; and the hierarch and bright daystar of the Creator now rejoices in the highest, Basil the wise and divine initiate of Christ.

THE EPISTLE Colossians 2:8-11 My mouth shall speak wisdom and the meditation of my heart shall bring forth understanding. Hear this all you nations. BRETHREN, see to it that no one makes a prey of you by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the universe, and not according to Christ. For in him the whole fulness of deity dwells bodily, and you have come to fulness of life in him, who is the head of all rule and authority. In him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of flesh in the circumcision of Christ; and you were buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead. THE GOSPEL Luke 2:20-21, 40-52 At that time, the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them. And at the end of eight days, when he was circumcised, he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb. And the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him. Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the Passover. And when he was twelve years old, they went up according to custom; and when the feast was ended, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents did not know it, but supposing him to be in the company they went a day's journey, and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintances; and when they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking him. After three days, they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions; and all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. And when they saw him they were astonished; and his mother said to him, "Son, why have you treated us so? Behold, your father and I have been looking for you anxiously." And he said to them, "How is it that you sought me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?" And they did not understand the saying which he spoke to them. And he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them; and his mother kept all these things in her heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature, and in favor with God and man.
