ANNUNCIATION GREEK ORTHODOX CATHEDRAL Norfolk, VA Rev. Presbyter George Bessinas, M.Div., Dean Rev. Protopresbyter Constantine Rogakos, Ph. D., Associate SUNDAY BULLETIN AND WEEKLY NEWS Third Sunday of Lent Sunday of the Veneration of the Holy Cross Sunday, March 15, 2015
Sunday, March 15, 2015 Orthros (Matins): Divine Liturgy (of St. Basil the Great) 8:45 AM 10:00 AM On March 15, the third Sunday of Lent, we celebrate the veneration of the precious and life-giving Cross; we commemorate the holy martyr Agapios and those with him: Plesius, Romulus, Timolaos, two named Alexander, and two named Dionysios.; the holy Apostle Aristobulos, Bishop of Britain, brother of Barnabas the Apostle; holy martyr Nicander of Egypt; the holy new martyr Manuel the Cretan, who witnessed in Chios in the year 1792, died by the sword. Resurrectional APOLYTIKION Mode 1 By means of Your Cross, O Lord, You abolished death. To the robber You opened Paradise. The lamentation of the myrrhbearing women You transformed, and You gave Your Apostles the order to proclaim to all that You had risen, O Christ our God, and granted the world Your great mercy. APOLYTIKION of the Holy Cross Save, O Lord, Your people and bless Your inheritance, granting victory to the faithful over the enemy, and by Your Cross protecting Your commonwealth. APOLYTIKION of St. Theodore the Commander When in God's army you had truly enlisted, O holy Theodore, the bearer of trophies, you were made a splendid general of the heavenly King; using as a weapon faith, you were ready for battle and utterly destroyed the ranks that were amassed by the demons, and as a victorious athlete you were seen, wherefore in true faith, we bless you and honor you. APOLYTIKION of the Annunciation Today is the beginning of our salvation, The revelation of the eternal mystery! The Son of God becomes the Son of the Virgin. As Gabriel announces the coming of Grace. Together with him let us cry to the Theotokos: Rejoice, O Full of Grace, The Lord is with You! Seasonal KONTAKION O Champion General, I your City now ascribe to you triumphant anthems as the tokens of my gratitude, being rescued from the terrors, O Theotokos. Inasmuch as you have power unassailable, from all kinds of perils free me so that unto you I may cry aloud: Rejoice, O unwedded Bride.
EPISTLE READING St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 4:14-16; 5:1-6 Prokeimenon: O Lord, save Your people, and bless Your inheritance; and shepherd them, and raise them up forever. Mode pl. 2. Psalm 27 (28) BRETHREN, since we have a high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. Because of this he is bound to offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. And one does not take the honor upon himself, but he is called by God, just as Aaron was. So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, "Thou art my Son, today I have begotten thee"; as he says also in another place, "Thou art a priest for ever, after the order of Melchizedek."
THE GOSPEL READING Gospel of Mark 8:34-38; 9:1 The Lord said: "If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For what can a man give in return for his life? For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." And he said to them, "Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power." The most extraordinary woman in the history of Greek Orthodox Liturgical music in America, without a doubt, is Presvytera Anna Gallos. Anna married Fr. George P. Gallos and in their fifty-three years together, they organized and spearheaded two choir federations, retreats, choir schools and workshops to help improve the spiritual and musical standards of church music and church choirs. They both played a very important part in the formation of the National Forum of Greek Orthodox Church Musicians, with the charter being presented by Anna to the Clergy-Laity Congress in 1976 in Philadelphia. Anna was awarded the St. Romanos the Melodist Medallion for Exemplary Archdiocesan Service, the highest national honor given to a church musician by the National Forum of Greek Orthodox Church Musicians. She also received the St. Paul Medal, the Archdiocese s highest honor for a lay person, from Archbishop Iakovos on her 50 th year of serving as a choir director. One of the most prolific composers of Greek Orthodox Church music in the United States, Anna s works include seven Divine Liturgies, numerous holy day service hymns, concert music, and special music for the organ. Anna founded the Evangeline Music Press which showcases her music and accomplishments. Today we honor the woman who enriched the music heritage in Greek Orthodox churches all over America.
