According to Herodotus, a soldier could march 5-6 parasangs per day (V.53), and so, if we assume a march of 15-18 miles per day, a parasang is approximately 3 to 3.3 miles. A σταθµός, stage or station, (~15-17 miles) is a Persian unit of measurement and may refer (1) to the place where one sleeps after a day s march or, more often in Xenophon, (2) to the distance traveled in a day s march. Since a stage refers to a period of time rather than a fixed distance, the number of parasangs covered in each stage will vary depending on the terrain. Xenophon very frequently refers to both stages and parasangs when he describes distances. When, for example, he states in line 22 that Cyrus marched σταθµοὺς τρεῖς παρασάγγας εἴκοσι καὶ δύο, for three stages for 22 parasangs, he is indicating that Cyrus traveled in a three-day march, in which he covered 22 parasangs (~66-70 miles).
