Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to serve, for the sake of those who are to obtain salvation? Therefore we must pay closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. For if the message declared by angels was valid and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard him. Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, "Why does this man speak thus? It is a blasphemy! Who can forgive sins but God alone?" And immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them, "Why do you question thus in your hearts? Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Rise, take up your pallet and walk? But that you may know that the Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins" he said to the paralytic "I say to you, rise, take up your pallet and go home." And he rose, and immediately took up the pallet and went out before them all; so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, "We never saw anything like this!" They persecuted Jesus not only because he broke the Sabbath but also because he said that God was his Father, making himself equal with God, which is a far more drastic declaration. He confirmed this through his own actions. The scribes themselves had devised this definition. They themselves had introduced the precept. They themselves had interpreted the law. But he proceeded to entangle them in their own words. In effect he said: It is you yourselves who have confessed that forgiveness of sins is given to God alone. The scribes asserted that only God could forgive sins, yet Jesus not only forgave sins, but showed that he had also another power that belongs to God alone: the power to disclose the secrets of the heart. Whenever there was need to punish or to honor, to forgive sins or to make laws, Christ was fully authorized to do it. Whenever Christ had to do any of these much greater things, you will not characteristically find him praying or calling on his Father for assistance. All these things, as you discover in the text, he did on his own authority. St. John Chrysostom
Β Κυριακὴ τῶν Νηστειῶν Ἁγίου Γρηγορίου Παλαμᾶ Ο θείος αυτός πατέρας, καταγόταν από την Ασία και ανετράφη από παιδί στην βασιλική αυλή της Κωνσταντινούπολης. Τελείωσε τις σπουδές του στη φιλοσοφία, ρητορική και φυσική. Στη λογική, κατά την αποφοιτήριο διά εξή του ενώπιον του αυτοκράτορα και των αξιωματούχων, ο πρύτανης του πανεπιστημίου ανεφώνησε με θαυμασμό ότι αν ήταν παρών και ο ίδιος Aριστοτέ ης θα τον επαινούσε. Μετά τις σπουδές του όμως, απέρριψε τη προσφορά υψηλών αξιωμάτων του αυτοκράτορα, εγκατέ ειψε τα βασί εια και από είκοσι χρονών ασκήτευσε στο Άγιον Όρος. Πρώτα στην Λαύρα του Βατοπεδίου κατόπιν στη Λαύρα του Αθανασίου καθώς και στην ερημική τοποθεσία Γ ωσσία, σημερινή Προβάτα. Αναχώρησε από το Όρος για τα Ιεροσό υμα, α ά στην Θεσσαλονίκη είδε σε όραμα τον Άγιο Δημήτριο που του απαίτησε να μείνει και να μονάσει εκεί κοντά. Μόνασε τότε στη Βέροια και τριάντα χρονών έγινε ιερέας. Εκεί πλήθη μοναχών και λαϊκών προσέτρεχαν να τον συμβουλευθούν. Μετά πέντε χρόνια και λόγω εισβολής των Σέρβων επέστρεψε στον Άθωνα σε κοντινό κελί της Μεγίστης Λαύρας, όπου έφθασε σε μεγά α ύψη φωτισμού και εκεί σε όραμα έ αβε εντολή να ασχοληθεί με δογματικά θέματα. Κατόπιν λόγω της φήμης του αναγκάσθηκε να γίνει ηγούμενος για ένα χρόνο στη μονή Εσφιγμένου. Αργότερα έγινε και αρχιεπίσκοπος Θεσσαλονίκης για δώδεκα χρόνια, α ά μόνο στα μισά παρέμεινε λόγω περιπετειών, από τη δράση του, μέχρι και φυλακής. Παραστάθηκε στις συγκροτηθείσες συνόδους του 1341 και 1347 και πολέμησε τις κακοδοξίες των δυτικόφρονων Βαρλαάμ και Ακινδύνου. Έγραψε πο ά θεολογικά συγγράμματα ιδιαίτερα δογματικά για να καταπολεμήσει τους αιρετικούς, όπως περί του Αγίου Πνεύματος, καθώς και επιστολές στους αντιησυχαστές, επίσης διάφορα ομολογιακά κείμενα. Είναι ο θεολόγος της χάριτος, του ακτίστου φωτός. Μετά στασιμότητα πο ών αιώνων ο Γρηγόριος πέτυχε να ανανεώσει την θεολογική ορολογία και να δώσει νέες κατευθύνσεις στη θεολογική σκέψη. Ξεκίνησε από προσωπικές εμπειρίες και απέδειξε ότι το έργο της θεολογίας είναι ασύγκριτα ανώτερο από της φιλοσοφίας και επιστήμης. Αξιολογεί την έξω σοφία ως περιορισμένη, αναφέροντας δύο γνώσεις, την θεία και την ανθρώπινη και δύο Θεϊκά δώρα, τα φυσικά για ό ους και τα υπερφυσικά ή πνευματικά που δίδονται όποτε θέ ει ο Θεός και μόνο στους καθαρούς και αγίους, στους τελείους. Η θεολογία ολοκληρώνεται δια της θεοπτίας. Οι αντίπαλοι του Παλαμά πίστευαν στο χωρίο του Ιωάννου ότι «τον Θεόν ουδείς εώρακε πώποτε» και κατηγορούσαν τους μοναχούς που είχαν θεοπτία, ως ομφαλοσκόπους. Ο Γρηγόριος αντέτεινε ότι ο Κύριος είπε: «οι καθαροί στην καρδία τον Θεόν όψονται» (Ματθ. 5,8). Θεμελιώδης προσφορά του Γρηγορίου στην θεολογία είναι η διάκριση στην ουσία και ενέργεια του Θεού. Η ύπαρξη του Θεού συνίσταται σε δύο. Στην ουσία Του, η οποία είναι άκτιστη, ακατά ηπτη και αυθύπαρκτη και ονομάζεται κυριολεκτικά θεότης (εδώ αναφέρεται το ουδείς εώρακε) και στις ενέργειές Του, οι λεγόμενες ιδιότητες ή προσόντα που είναι μεν άκτιστες, α ά καταληπτές. Ά ο λοιπόν η θεότης και ά ο η βασιλεία, η αγιότης κ.λ.π. Ο άνθρωπος είναι μίγμα δύο διαφόρων κόσμων και συγκεφαλαιώνει ό η την κτίση. Ακολουθώντας την Πατερική γραμμή σε σύγκριση με τη πλατωνική και βαρλααμική ανθρωπολογία, θεωρεί ότι το σώμα του ανθρώπου δεν είναι πονηρό, α ά αποτελεί κατοικία του νου, αφού μά ιστα καθίσταται και του Θεού κατοικία, έτσι μαζί με τη ψυχή καθιστά τον άνθρωπο ενιαίο και αδιάσπαστο σύνολο. Η αναγέννηση του ανθρώπου γίνεται με το βάπτισμα και η ανακαίνιση με την θεία Ευχαριστία. Είναι τα δύο θεμελιώδη μυστήρια, της θείας οικονομίας. Το ουσιωδέστερο στοιχείο της διδασκαλίας του αγίου Γρηγορίου Παλαμά συνίσταται στην ανύψωση του ανθρώπου υπεράνω αυτού του κόσμου. Η εμπειρία της θεώσεως είναι δυνατή από εδώ με την παράδοξο σύνδεση του ιστορικού με του υπεριστορικού. Το φως που είδαν οι μαθητές του Χριστού στο Θαβώρ, το φως που β έπουν οι καθαροί ησυχαστές σήμερα και η υπόστασις των αγαθών του μέ οντος αιώνος αποτελούν τις τρείς φάσεις ενός και του αυτού πνευματικού γεγονότος, σε μια υπερχρόνια πραγματικότητα. Προβά ει λοιπόν η Εκκλησία την μνήμη του στη δεύτερη Κυριακή, ως συνέχεια, τρόπον τινά και επέκταση της πρώτης Κυριακής, της Ορθοδοξίας. Η μνήμη του αγίου Γρηγορίου Παλαμά είναι ένα είδος δευτέρας «Κυριακής της Ορθοδοξίας». Κοιμήθηκε σε ηλικία 63 χρονών στις 14 Νοεμβρίου από ασθένεια και αγιοποιήθηκε σύντομα. Το ιερό του λείψανο σώζεται σήμερα στη μητρόπολη της Θεσσαλονίκης.

St. Gregory Palamas Saint Gregory Palamas, Archbishop of Thessalonica, was born in the year 1296 in Constantinople. Gregory, barely twenty years old, withdrew to Mount Athos in the year 1316 and became a novice in the Vatopedi monastery under the guidance of the monastic Elder St Nicodemus of Vatopedi. There he was tonsured and began on the path of asceticism. In the eleventh century St Simeon the New Theologian (March 12) provided detailed instruction in mental activity for those praying in an outward manner, and the ascetics of Athos put it into practice. The experienced use of mental prayer (or prayer of the heart), requiring solitude and quiet, is called Hesychasm (from the Greek hesychia meaning calm, silence), and those practicing it were called hesychasts. The future hierarch Gregory became fully embued with the spirit of hesychasm and adopted it as an essential part of his life. In the year 1326, because of the threat of Turkish invasions, he and the brethren retreated to Thessalonica, where he was then ordained to the holy priesthood. About the year 1330 the learned monk Barlaam had arrived in Constantinople from Calabria, in Italy. He was the author of treatises on logic and astronomy, a skilled and sharp-witted orator, and he received a university chair in the capital city and began to expound on the works of St Dionysius the Areopagite, whose apophatic theology was acclaimed in equal measure in both the Eastern and the Western Churches. Soon Barlaam journeyed to Mt. Athos, where he became acquainted with the spiritual life of the hesychasts. Saying that it was impossible to know the essence of God, he declared mental prayer a heretical error. Journeying from Mount Athos to Thessalonica, and from there to Constantinople, and later again to Thessalonica, Barlaam entered into disputes with the monks and attempted to demonstrate the created, material nature of the light of Tabor (i.e. at the Transfiguration). He ridiculed the teachings of the monks about the methods of prayer and about the uncreated light seen by the hesychasts. St Gregory, at the request of the Athonite monks, replied with verbal admonitions at first. But seeing the futility of such efforts, he put his theological arguments in writing. Thus appeared the Triads in Defense of the Holy Hesychasts (1338). 2nd Sunday of Lent Towards the year 1340 the Athonite ascetics, with the assistance of the saint, compiled a general response to the attacks of Barlaam, the so-called Hagiorite Tome. At the Constantinople Council of 1341 in the church of Hagia Sophia St Gregory Palamas debated with Barlaam, focusing upon the nature of the light of Mount Tabor. On May 27, 1341 the Council accepted the position of St Gregory Palamas, that God, unapproachable in His Essence, reveals Himself through His energies, which are directed towards the world and are able to be perceived, like the light of Tabor, but which are neither material nor created. The teachings of Barlaam were condemned as heresy, and he himself was anathemized and fled to Calabria. But the dispute between the Palamites and the Barlaamites was far from over. To these latter belonged Barlaam s disciple, the Bulgarian monk Akyndinos, and also Patriarch John XIV Kalekos (1341-1347); the emperor Andronicus III Paleologos (1328-1341) was also inclined toward their opinion. Akyndinos, whose name means one who inflicts no harm, actually caused great harm by his heretical teaching. Akyndinos wrote a series of tracts in which he declared St Gregory and the Athonite monks guilty of causing church disorders. The saint, in turn, wrote a detailed refutation of Akyndinos errors. The patriarch supported Akyndinos and called St Gregory the cause of all disorders and disturbances in the Church (1344) and had him locked up in prison for four years. In 1347, when John the XIV was replaced on the patriarchal throne by Isidore (1347-1349), St Gregory Palamas was set free and was made Archbishop of Thessalonica. In 1351 the Council of Blachernae solemnly upheld the Orthodoxy of his teachings. But the people of Thessalonica did not immediately accept St Gregory, and he was compelled to live in various places. On one of his travels to Constantinople the Byzantine ship fell into the hands of the Turks. Even in captivity, St Gregory preached to Christian prisoners and even to his Moslem captors. The Hagarenes were astonished by the wisdom of his words. Some of the Moslems were unable to endure this, so they beat him and would have killed him if they had not expected to obtain a large ransom for him. A year later, St Gregory was ransomed and returned to Thessalonica.

Announcements WELCOME TO ALL VISITORS: For those visiting an Orthodox Church for the first time, please be aware that Holy Communion is a sign of unity of faith which is only offered to Baptized or Chrismated Orthodox Christians. All present are welcome, however, to partake of the antidoro (blessed bread) which is distributed at the end of the service. Those interested in learning more about the Orthodox Christian faith, please feel free to see Fr. Demetri after the service. Please join us for fellowship immediately following the Liturgy in the Anastasia and Spiro Davis Hall. The fellowship hour will be offered by the Parish Council. ORATORICAL FESTIVAL: Today we have our annual St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival after the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy. Please support our Sunday School children as they offer a presentation on various aspects of our Orthodox Faith. PRESANCTIFIED LITURGY: The Presanctified Liturgy will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 15 at the Cathedral Chapel at 6:00 pm. Following the Liturgy we will have a Lenten Meal and a Lenten Lecture sponsored by our Ladies Philoptochos. SALUTATIONS: The Third Salutation Service will be celebrated on Friday, March 17 at 7:00 pm at the Cathedral. Join us as we celebrate the Annunciation on the first five Friday s of Lent. ANNUNCIATION CATHEDRAL AND THE BOSTON HOMELESS VETERANS: The next service day at the Homeless Veterans Shelter is on Monday, March 20 at 4:15 pm. All volunteers are welcome. FEAST OF THE ANNUNCIATION: On Friday, March 24 at 7:00 pm, our Annunciation Cathedral will celebrate our Feast Day Vespers at 7:00 pm. Our Ladies Philoptochos will sponsor a reception following the Vespers. On Saturday, March 25, Orthros will start at 8:45 am followed by the Divine Liturgy at which His Eminence Metropolitan Methodios will preside.
