Brethren, the point is this: he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must do as he has made up his mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that you may always have enough of everything and may provide in abundance for every good work. As it is written, "He scatters abroad, he gives to the poor; his righteousness endures for ever." He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your resources and increase the harvest of your righteousness. φόβος πάντας, καὶ ἐδόξαζον τὸν Θεὸν, λέγοντες ὅτι Προφήτης μέγας ἠγήγερται ἐν ἡμῖν, καὶ ὅτι ἐπεσκέψατο ὁ Θεὸς τὸν λαὸν αὐτοῦ. mother. Fear seized them all; and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet has arisen among us!" and "God has visited his people!" Venerable Pelagia the Penitent Saint Pelagia the Penitent was converted to Christianity by Saint Nonnus, Bishop of Edessa (Saturday of Cheesefare Week). Before her acceptance of Christianity through Baptism, Pelagia was head of a dance troupe in Palestinian Antioch, living a life of frivolity and prostitution. One day Pelagia, elegantly dressed, was making her way past a church where Saint Nonnus was preaching a sermon. Believers turned their faces away from the sinner, but the bishop glanced after her. Struck by the outer beauty of Pelagia and having foreseen the spiritual greatness within her, the saint prayed in his cell for a long time to the Lord for the sinner. He told his fellow bishops that the prostitute put them all to shame. He explained that she took great care to adorn her body in order to appear beautiful in the eyes of men. We... take no thought for the adornment of our wretched souls, he said. On the following day, when Saint Nonnus was teaching in the church about the dread Last 8 October Judgment and its consequences, Pelagia came. The teaching made a tremendous impression upon her.with the fear of God and weeping tears of repentance, she asked the saint for Baptism. Seeing her sincere and full repentance, Bishop Nonnus baptized her. By night the devil appeared to Pelagia, urging her to return to her former life. The saint prayed, signed herself with the Sign of the Cross, and the devil vanished. Three days after her baptism, Saint Pelagia gathered up her valuables and took them to Bishop Nonnus. The bishop ordered that they be distributed among the poor saying, Let this be wisely dispersed, so that these riches gained by sin may become a wealth of righteousness. After this Saint Pelagia journeyed to Jerusalem to the Mount of Olives. She lived there in a cell, disguised as the monk Pelagius, living in ascetic seclusion, and attaining great spiritual gifts. When she died, she was buried in her cell. He touched, it says, the bier and said, Young man, I say unto thee, arise. How was not a word enough for raising him who was lying there? What is so difficult to it or past accomplishment? What is more powerful than the Word of God? Why then did he not work the miracle by only a word but also touched the bier? It was, my beloved, that you might learn that the holy body of Christ is productive for the salvation of man. The flesh of the almighty Word is the body of life and was clothed with his might. Consider that iron when brought into contact with fire produces the effects of fire and fulfills its functions. The flesh of Christ also has the power of giving life and annihilates the influence of death and corruption because it is the flesh of the Word, who gives life to all. St. Cyril of Alexandria

Ἡ Ὁσία Πελαγία Ζοῦσε στὴν Ἀντιόχεια καὶ ἀνῆκε στὴν τάξη τῶν ἐ αφρῶν γυναικών. Ἦταν πόρνη. Ἡ ζωή της ἦταν βουτηγμένη μέσα στὸν οἶστρο τῶν ἁμαρτωλῶν ἡδονῶν. Ἡ ἀκολασία εἶχε πωρώσει τόσο τὴν συνείδησή της, ὥστε καμιὰ ἔννοια μετανοίας νὰ μὴ μπορεῖ νὰ εἰσχωρήσει στὴν ψυχή της. Ἑπομένως, θὰ μποροῦσε νὰ πεῖ κανείς, ἦταν καταδικασμένη ἀπὸ τὴν ἐπίγεια ζωή της στὸ πῦρ τῆς κολάσεως. Ὅμως ὄχι! Ὁ πολυεύσπλαχνος Κύριός μας διαβεβαίωσε ὅτι «αἱ τελώναι καὶ αἱ πόρνοι προάγουσιν ὑμᾶς εἰς τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ Θεοῦ». Δηλαδή, οἱ τελῶνες καὶ οἱ πόρνες, ποὺ στὴν ἀρχὴ ἔδειξαν ἀπείθεια στὸ Νόμο τοῦ Θεοῦ, ἀ ὰ κατόπιν εἰ ικρινὰ μετάνιωσαν, προλαμβάνουν στὴ βασιλεία τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐσᾶς, ποὺ μόνο μὲ τὰ λόγια δείξατε ὑπακοὴ στὸν Θεό, στὴν πράξη ὅμως ὑπήρξατε ἀπειθεῖς καὶ ἄπιστοι. Πράγματι ἡ Πελαγία τυχαῖα σὲ κάποια σύναξη χριστιανῶν ἄκουσε θερμὸ κήρυγμα περὶ ἁγνότητας, τοῦ ἐπισκόπου Νόννου. Τὰ λόγια του ἤ εγξαν καὶ συγκλόνισαν τὴν ψυχή της. Μὲ τὴν χάρη τοῦ Θεοῦ, ἀπαρνήθηκε τὴν ἄσωτη ζωή της, πού ησε τὰ διάφορα κοσμήματά της καὶ τὰ χρήματα τὰ διαμοίρασε στοὺς φτωχούς. 8 Οκτωβρίου Ἀφοῦ κατηχήθηκε καὶ βαπτίσθηκε, μετὰ ὀκτὼ ἡμέρες πῆγε στὴν Ἱερουσαλήμ, ὅπου μὲ σκληρὴ ἄσκηση πέρασε τὴν ὑπό οιπη ζωή της. Ἀπολυτίκιον. Ἦχος δ. Ὁ ὑψωθεῖς ἐν τῷ Σταυρῷ. Ἐξ ἀκανθῶν καθάπερ ῥόδον εὐῶδες, τῇ Ἐκκλησίᾳ Πελαγία ἐδείχθης, ταῖς ἐναρέτοις πράξεσιν εὐφραίνουσα ἡμᾶς ὅθεν καὶ προσήγαγες, ὡς ὀσμὴν εὐωδίας, τῷ σὲ θαυμαστώσαντι, τὸν σὸν βίον Ὁσία. Ὃν ἐκδυσώπει σώζεσθαι ἡμᾶς, παθῶν παντοίων, ψυχῆς τε καὶ σώματος. Κοντάκιον. Ἦχος α. Χορὸς Ἀγγελικός. Μεγαλυνάριον. Φερωνύμως πέ αγος γαληνόν, πλεύσασα Ὁσία, μετανοίας τῆς ἱερᾶς, Μῆτερ Πελαγία, τοῖς ἐν πελάγει βίου, λιμὴν σωτηριώδης, ὤφθης καὶ ἄκλυστος. Although there is grave sin that you cannot wash away yourself with the tears of your penitence, let the mother of the church weep for you. She who intercedes for all as a widowed mother for only sons is she who suffers with the spiritual grief of nature when she perceives her children urged on to death by mortal sins. We are heart of her heart, for there is also a spiritual heart. We are the heart of the church, since we are members of his Body, of his flesh and of his bones. Let the pious mother grieve, let the crowd, too, help. Let not only the crowd but also a multitude feel pity for a good parent. Already at the funeral you will arise, already will you be released from the sepulcher; the attendants at your funeral will stand still, you will begin to speak words of life, all will be afraid; for very many are corrected by the example of one.
