Message from Father George WE MUST STAND STILL As our Lord Jesus approached the procession in today s Gospel lesson, He turned and touched the bier, and then those carrying it stood still because of obedience. If we do not stand still in the Christian life, our Lord will not touch us; our Lord will not change us. We must stand still and be obedient and listen to our Lord. Through the miracles performed by Jesus, we are reminded of the closeness of the kingdom of God, and through Scripture we are reminded that we are to give God the Glory for all the miracles in our lives. Today s Gospel account of the raising of the widow of Nain s son points to the Glory of God. In the glorification of the Father through this incident, the Son of God is Himself glorified. Pelagia the Righteous - October 8 Saint Pelagia was a prominent pagan actress of Antioch, who lived a life of unrestrained prodigality and led many to perdition. Instructed and baptized by a bishop named Nonnus (Saint Nonnus is commemorated November 10), she departed for the Mount of Olives near Jerusalem, where she lived as a recluse, feigning to be a eunuch called Pelagia. She lived in such holiness and repentance that in the middle of the fifth century she was deemed worthy to repose in sanctity. Her tomb on the Mount of Olives has been a place of pilgrimage ever since. STEWARDSHIP - FINAL PUSH If you have not already made your 2017 stewardship pledge, now would be an excellent time to do so. Your Church needs your support, so do not delay. Make your pledge today. Thanks for your generous support. After the young man rose from the dead and began to speak, the response of the crowd, which had come together, was that fear seized them all, and they glorified God saying, A great prophet has arisen among us! and God has visited His people. The message of today s Gospel lesson is a reminder to all of the compassion that the Lord has for us. Through this lesson we see how the Lord seeks to transform us from being dead to being alive in Him! We must stand still. Through prayer we are enjoined to seek the stillness in our lives that will be the proper time and place for our Lord to speak to us. Seek that stillness like the stillness of the dead man. In the quiet of our heart we will receive the abundant blessings of the Lord and will arise in His ways. Undeniably, God has visited His people. He visited the young dead man of Nain, and he was resurrected. Through our dedication to Him we will see that He is not far from us either! God has visited His people and enriched them with His abundant love, His allencompassing compassion. For the people of Nain so long ago, our Lord Jesus Christ was in their midst. As we gather in His name to worship and glorify Him, we also know that Christ is in our midst. He is and always shall be! He loves us as the compassionate Father, blesses us, and raises us from our spiritual death.

Resurrectional Apolytikion Tone 1 The stone had been secured with a seal by the Judeans, and a guard of soldiers was watching Your immaculate body. You rose on the third day, O Lord and Savior, granting life unto the world. For this reason were the powers of heaven crying out to You, O Life-giver: Glory to Your resurrection, O Christ; glory to Your eternal rule; glory to Your dispensation, only One who loves mankind. Apolytikion for the Devout Woman Plagal Tone 4 In you, O Mother, is preserved undistorted what was made in the image of God; for taking up the cross, you followed Christ and by example taught, that we should overlook the flesh, since it passes away, and instead look after the soul, since it is immortal. And therefore, O devout Pelagia, your spirit rejoices with the angels. Apolytikion of the Holy Trinity Plagal Tone 4 Blessed are You, O Christ our God, who made fishermen all-wise, sending upon them the Holy Spirit and, through them, netting the world. O Loving One, glory to You. Kontakion Tone 2 O Protection of Christians that cannot be put to shame, mediation unto the creator most constant: O despise not the voices of those who have sinned; but be quick, O good one, to come unto our aid, who in faith cry unto you: Hasten to intercession and speed to make supplication, O you who does ever protect, O Theotokos, them that honor you.
THE EPISTLE 2 Corinthians 9:6-11 BRETHREN, he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must do as he has made up his mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that you may always have enough of everything and may provide in abundance for every good work. As it is written, "He scatters abroad, he gives to the poor; his righteousness endures for ever." He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your resources and increase the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way for great generosity, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God. THE GOSPEL Luke 7:11-16 At that time, Jesus went to a city called Nain, and his disciples and a great crowd went with him. As he drew near to the gate of the city, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow; and a large crowd from the city was with her. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, "Do not weep." And he came and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, "Young man, I say to you, arise." And the dead man sat up, and began to speak. And he gave him to his mother. Fear seized them all; and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet has arisen among us!" and "God has visited his people!"
