Our Venerable Father Anthony the Great Τοῦ Ὁσίου Πατρός ἡµῶν Ἀντωνίου τοῦ Μεγάλου January 17 Anthony was born in Egypt about AD 250, in the village of Koman near Herculea. Following the death of his noble and wealthy parents, he divided the inherited estate with his sister, who was a minor, and settled her with their relatives. Anthony distributed his half of the estate to the poor and, he, in his twentieth year, dedicated himself to the ascetic life for which he yearned from his childhood. In the beginning Anthony lived a life of asceticism in the proximity of his village but, in order to flee the disturbances of people, he withdrew into the wilderness on the shore of the Red Sea. There he spent twenty years as a recluse, not associating with anyone except with God through constant prayer, reflection and contemplation, patiently enduring unspeakable temptations from the devil. His fame spread throughout the entire world and many disciples gathered around him whom he placed on the path of salvation by his example and words. During the eighty-five years of his ascetical life, only twice did he go to Alexandria. The first time to seek martyrdom during the time of the persecution of the Church and, the second time at the invitation of Saint Athanasios, in order to refute the accusation of the Arians who wrongly claimed that he, too, was an adherent of the Arian heresy. Anthony died in AD 335 at the age of 105, leaving behind an entire army of his disciples and imitators. Like Saint Athanasios the Great, a most-learned man, Anthony was sought out as a counselor and teacher of the most-learned men of his time even though he was not a scholar but a humble monatic. And, Saint Athanasios the Great sought the wise counsel of the desert ascetic. Once, when certain Greek philosophers tempted him with literary wisdom, Anthony shamed them with the question: "Which is older, the understanding or the book? Which of these two was the cause of the other?" Ashamed, the philosophers dispersed for they perceived that they only had literary knowledge without understanding and Anthony had true understanding without "book learning." Here is a man who attained perfection in as far as man, in general, can attain on earth. Here is an instructor to instructors and a teacher to teachers, who, for a full eighty five years perfected himself by asceticism in the desert, and only in that way was he able to perfect many others. 1

Having preserved intact, that which is in the image of God, by ascetic practice you set the mind as sovereign over destructive passions. And, in as much as possible, you achieved the likeness. For by bravely compelling your nature, you quickly subjected what is worse to what is better, and subjugated the flesh to the spirit. Wherefore, you proved to be the pinnacle of monastics, a citizen of the desert, teacher for those who live righteously, scrupulous exemplar of virtue. And now in heaven, O Anthony, no longer with mirrored reflections, you clearly behold the Holy Trinity, directly interceding for those who with faith and fervor honor you. Theotokion Now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen. Who will not bless you, all-holy Virgin? Who shall not praise your birth-giving free of pain? For the only-begotten Son coming timelessly from the Father has ineffably become incarnate within you, O pure one; He Who was God by nature became man by nature for our sake, not divided into two persons but known by two natures not mixed or confused. Plead with Him, O blessed one, for the salvation of our souls. Entrance O gladsome Light, and Prokeimenon of the day. Therefore they will receive a glorious crown and a beautiful diadem from the hand of the Lord, because with His right hand He will cover them, and with His arm He will shield them. The Lord will take His zeal as His whole armor, and will arm all creation to repel His enemies; He will put on righteousness as a breastplate, and wear impartial justice as a helmet; He will take holiness as an invincible shield, and sharpen stern wrath for a sword, and creation will join with Him to fight against the madmen. Shafts of lightning will fly with true aim, and will leap to the target as from a well-drawn bow of clouds, and hailstones full of wrath will be hurled as from a catapult; the water of the sea will rage against them, and rivers will relentlessly overwhelm them; a mighty wind will rise against them, and like a tempest it will winnow them away. For old age is not honored for length of time, nor measured by number of years; but understanding is gray hair for men, and a blameless life is ripe old age. There was one who pleased God and was loved by Him, and while living among sinners he was taken up. He was caught up lest evil change his understanding or guile deceive his soul. For the fascination of wickedness obscures what is good, and roving desire perverts the innocent mind. Being perfected in a short time, he fulfilled long years; for his soul was pleasing to the Lord, therefore He took him quickly from the midst of wickedness. Yet the peoples saw and did not understand, nor take such a thing to heart, that God s grace and mercy are with His holy ones, and He watches over His elect. Then, Let us say with all our soul, and with all our mind let us say, etc. Make us worthy, O Lord... Then, Let us complete our evening prayer..., and Prayer at the Bowing of Heads.
