There are four major periods of fasting during the year and a number of other days in which we usually abstain from meat, dairy products, eggs, fish, wine and oil. Every Wednesday and Friday (with some exceptions) is a fasting day. If a feast day falls on a Wednesday or a Friday the fasting is relaxed as indicated. The Triodion (three-week preparation for Great Lent) begins on the 21/2/16. There is no fasting on Wednesday or Friday of that week. Please consult your spiritual father or a priest to help you apply these guidelines to your own spiritual struggle and situation. Wednesday 2 Abstain from meat, eggs, dairy products, fish, wine and oil. Friday 4 Abstain from meat, eggs, dairy products, fish, wine and oil. Wednesday 9 Abstain from meat. Friday 11 Abstain from meat. Wednesday 16 Abstain from meat, eggs, dairy products, fish, wine and oil. Friday 18 Abstain from meat, eggs, dairy products, fish, wine and oil. Wednesday 23 Abstain from meat, eggs, dairy products, fish, wine and oil. Friday 25 Abstain from meat, eggs, dairy products. Wednesday 29 Abstain from meat, eggs, dairy products, fish, wine and oil. Friday 31 Abstain from meat, eggs, dairy products, fish, wine and oil.

Fasting is an integral and essential part of Orthodox Christian life. It assists us in the struggle against sin and the passions by bringing our appetites under control so as to focus our mind and heart on prayer and repentance. Through it we remember the lost Paradise of Eden and the future Kingdom of Heaven where there is no eating and drinking. The TRIODION (three-week preparation for Great Lent) begins this year on the 21/2/16. No fasting is permitted that week. Meatfare Sunday (6/3/16) is the last day we consume meat before Pascha. During GREAT LENT (14 th March. 30 th April this year) we abstain from meat, dairy products, eggs, fish, wine and oil from Mondays to Fridays. Wine and oil are permitted on weekends (with the exception of Holy Saturday) because the Resurrection of Christ is celebrated on these days. On the Feast of the Annunciation (25 th March) and on Palm Sunday (24 th April this year) fish is permitted to be eaten in celebration of these great occasions. Please consult your spiritual father or a priest to help you apply these guidelines to your own spiritual struggle and situation. VESPERS OF FORGIVENESS will be held on the evening preceding the beginning of Great Lent (Sunday 13 th March at 6pm). This is an opportunity for everyone to ask forgiveness of one another before the spiritual struggle of Lent begins. A light supper will follow. CLEAN MONDAY THE FIRST DAY OF GREAT LENT is the 14 th March this year. Make every effort to attend the Lenten Services and honour the Fast this year.
