John Romas (914) 667-3100 Ήχος Βαρύς 7th Tone Ι` Εωθινόν 10th Morning Gospel Sunday January 10th, 2016-Κυριακή 10 Ιανπυαρίου, 2016 Saint Gregory, Bishop of Nyssa, was a younger brother of St Basil the Great (January 1). His birth and upbringing came at a time when the Arian disputes were at their height. Having received an excellent education, he was at one time a teacher of rhetoric. In the year 372, he was consecrated by St Basil the Great as bishop of the city of Nyssa in Cappadocia. St Gregory was an ardent advocate for Orthodoxy, and he fought against the Arian heresy with his brother St Basil. Gregory was persecuted by the Arians, by whom he was falsely accused of improper use of church property, and thereby deprived of his See and sent to Ancyra. In the following year St Gregory was again deposed in absentia by a council of Arian bishops, but he continued to encourage his flock in Orthodoxy, wandering about from place to place. After the death of the emperor Valens (378), St Gregory was restored to his cathedra and was joyously received by his flock. His brother St Basil the Great died in 379.Only with difficulty did St Gregory survive the loss of his brother and guide. He delivered a funeral oration for him, and completed St Basil s study of the six days of Creation, the Hexaemeron. That same year St Gregory participated in the Council of Antioch against heretics who refused to recognize the perpetual virginity of the Mother of God. Others at the opposite extreme, who worshipped the Mother of God as being God Herself, were also denounced by the Council. He visited the churches of Arabia and Palestine, which were infected with the Arian heresy, to assert the Orthodox teaching about the Most Holy Theotokos. On his return journey St Gregory visited Jerusalem and the Holy Places. In the year 381 St Gregory was one of the chief figures of the Second Ecumenical Council, convened at Constantinople against the heresy of Macedonius, who incorrectly taught about the Holy Spirit. At this Council, on the initiative of St Gregory, the Nicean Symbol of Faith (the Creed) was completed. Together with the other bishops St Gregory affirmed St Gregory the Theologian as Archpastor of Constantinople. In the year 383, St Gregory of Nyssa participated in a Council at Constantinople, where he preached a sermon on the divinity of the Son and the Holy Spirit. In 386, he was again at Constantinople, and he was asked to speak the funeral oration in memory of the empress Placilla. Again in 394 St Gregory was present in Constantinople at a local Council, convened to resolve church matters in Arabia. St Gregory of Nyssa was a fiery defender of Orthodox dogmas and a zealous teacher of his flock, a kind and compassionate father to his spiritual children, and their intercessor before the courts. He was distinguished by his magnanimity, patience and love of peace.having reached old age, St Gregory of Nyssa died soon after the Council of Constantinople. Together with his great contemporaries, Sts Basil the Great and Gregory the Theologian, St Gregory of Nyssa had a significant influence on the Church life of his time. His sister, St Macrina, wrote to him: You are renowned both in the cities, and gatherings of people, and throughout entire districts. Churches ask you for help. St Gregory is known in history as one of the most profound Christian thinkers of the fourth century. Endowed with philosophical talent, he saw philosophy as a means for a deeper penetration into the authentic meaning of divine revelation. St Gregory left behind many remarkable works of dogmatic character, as well as sermons and discourses. He has been called the Father of Fathers.

St. Paul's Letter to the Ephesians 4:7-13 BRETHREN, grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ's gift. Therefore it is said, "When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men." (in saying, "He ascended," what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is he who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.) And his gifts were that some should be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ. Σύντομος βίος του Αγίου Γρηγορίου Νύσσης Ο Άγιος Γρηγόριος κατάγεται από τη Νεοκαισάρεια του Πόντου και προέρχεται από αγία πολυμελή οικογένεια. Είναι τέκνο του Βασιλείου και της Αγίας Εμμέλειας, αδελφός του Μεγάλου Βασιλείου, του Ναυκρατίου, του Πέτρου και της Οσίας Μακρίνας. Από μικρό παιδί μάθαινε τα γράμματα και του Θεού τα πράγματα. Μαζί με την μητέρα του Εμμέλεια τα αδέλφια του Βασίλειο και Μακρίνα περπατούσε εξ απαλών ονύχων τον δρόμο των αγίων αρετών του Ευαγγελίου. Τα όσα έμαθε από την οικογένειά του δεν τα λησμόνησε ποτέ. Ττον αδελφό του Βασίλειο αποκαλούσε "θεσπέσιο Πατέρα" και την αδελφή του Μακρίνα "μητέρα μετά τη μητέρα", εκφράζοντας έτσι την απέραντη ευγνωμοσύνη του προς αυτούς. Μάλιστα, το μέγεθος της αγάπης του προς τους οικείους του φάνηκε καλύτερα όταν αποδέχτηκε να γίνει κληρικός κατόπιν πολλών παροτρύνσεων από αυτούς. Έτσι, το 371, χειροτονείται από το Μέγα Βασίλειο Επίσκοπος Νύσσης, μιας μικρής πόλης μεταξύ Καισάρειας και Άγκυρας. Ο Γρηγόριος, όμως, επειδή είχε ευθύ χαρακτήρα, πολύ σύντομα ήλθε αντιμέτωπος με την πολιτεία. Ο φιλοαρειανός Έπαρχος του Πόντου Δημοσθένης τον στιγμάτισε και το 375 τον συνέλαβε με το πρόσχημα ότι (τάχα) εκλέγηκε Επίσκοπος Νύσσης αντικανονικά και είχε καταχραστεί χρήματα της Εκκλησίας! Ωστόσο, ο Γρηγόριος κατάφερε να δραπετεύσει και να κρυφτεί σε κάποιο χωριό. Ένα χρόνο αργότερα, το 376, με αφορμή τις πιο πάνω κατηγορίες, σύνοδος από αρειανούς επισκόπους τον καταδίκασε ερήμην του. Το γεγονός αυτό αποτέλεσε το εμπόδιο που τον κράτησε μακριά από την Νύσσα έως το 378, έτος κατά το οποίο απέθανε ο Ουάλεντος. Τη χαρά του γυρισμού διαδέχθηκε σύντομα η λύπη, αφού ο προστάτης του Βασίλειος και η στοργική Μακρίνα εκδήμησαν προς τον Κύριον. Βέβαια, το γεγονός αυτό δεν πτόησε τον Γρηγόριο, διότι τον έφερε ενώπιον των ευθυνών του. Γι αυτό πήρε την απόφαση να συνεχίσει τα έργα του αδελφού του Βασίλειου. Μάλιστα, διεκπεραίωσε δύσκολες εκκλησιαστικές αποστολές τόσο στην Αραβία, όσο και στον Πόντο, τις οποίες τού ανέθεσε η κατά του Απολιναρίου Σύνοδος, που έγινε στην Αντιόχεια το 379, και στην οποία έλαβε μέρος. Το έτος 380, κατόπιν πιέσεων, αποδέχθηκε την εκλογή του ως Αρχιεπισκόπου Σεβαστείας, αλλά με την πρώτη ευκαιρία επέστρεψε στην Νύσσα. Την έδρα της Σεβαστείας ανέλαβε στη συνέχεια ο αδελφός του Πέτρος. Τον επόμενο χρόνο, το 381, ο Γρηγόριος συμμετέσχε ενεργά στη Β Οικουμενική Σύνοδο. Τέλος, θα ήταν μεγάλη παράλειψη να μην αναφέρουμε ότι ο Γρηγόριος ήταν σύζυγος μίας αγίας γυναίκας, της Θεοσέβειας, η οποία κοιμήθηκε το 386, εννέα χρόνια πριν ο Γρηγόριος εκδημήσει και αυτός προς την αιώνια ζωή (395). Η μόρφωση του Αγίου Γρηγορίου Η θεολογική σκέψη του Γρηγορίου δέχθηκε επιδράσεις από την ιουδαϊκή και χριστιανική Αλεξανδρινή παράδοση. Η ασκητική ζωή, οι ατελείωτες ώρες μελέτης και η δυνατή κριτική του σκέψη τον κράτησαν στον ορθόδοξο δρόμο. Η Χάρη του Θεού τον ανέδειξε ως έναν από τους κορυφαίους θεολόγους της Εκκλησίας μας, καθώς και από τους πιο σπουδαίους φιλόσοφους όλων των εποχών. Ο Γρηγόριος κατέστη άριστος γνώστης των ιερών Γραφών, δηλαδή των Προφητών και των Αποστόλων, και ιδιαίτερα των Αποστόλων Παύλου και Ιωάννη. Επίσης, εκτός από άριστος θεολόγος ήταν και γνώστης της θύραθεν παιδείας. Αρχικά, διετέλεσε μαθητής του ρήτορα Λιβάνιου και στη συνέχεια φοίτησε σε φιλοσοφικές σχολές της περιοχής του. Μάλιστα, ο Πλάτωνας, ήταν ο αγαπημένος του φιλόσοφος, σε σημείο μάλιστα που τον θεωρούσε τον μόνο σοφό από τους έξω, γι αυτό και ασχολήθηκε ιδιαίτερα με τον Νεοπλατωνισμό. Βέβαια, ο Γρηγόριος, ήρθε σε επαφή και με την Αριστοτελική λογική, την οποία, όμως, θεωρούσε υποδεέστερη από αυτή του Πλάτωνα, όσο αφορά στο χώρο που εκτείνεται πέρα της φυσικής. Γιατί, την Αριστοτελική λογική τη χαρακτηρίζει η τάση προς το χειροπιαστό και το συγκεκριμένο, και δεν διέπεται από μυστηριακή διάθεση, όπως ο Πλατωνισμός, και επιπλέον, ο Αριστοτελισμός εχρησιμοποιείτο από τον Ευνόμιο για να στηρίξει τις κακοδοξίες του. Επίσης, ο Γρηγόριος, ήταν γνώστης της στωϊκής φιλοσοφίας, διότι πολλοί φιλόσοφοι της σχολής αυτής ήταν σημιτικής καταγωγής και ως εκ τούτου βρίσκονταν πιο κοντά στο ήθος της Παλαιάς Διαθήκης, παρά κάποιοι άλλοι.
